Proud buildings in disrepair and rhythmic music encountered everywhere tell a story of the changes Cuba has undergone in the last decades that have shaped this globally unique country and friendly people. Walking and exploring through old Havana will take you back decades with the richness and depth of a culture somewhat stopped in time. Immerse yourself in the Biennial activities... artists, arts exhibitions, receptions, art installations... all representing the best art from numerous countries, including exceptional local Cuban artists. You will have the opportunity to meet local people from all walks of life, discuss their lives... and share your own, as you explore this fascinating city. Your hotel is the historic Historic Nacional, the opulent home during the heyday of prohibition to movie stars, gangsters and socialites, with its casinos, night life, and intrigue. Today, it is as a gracious lady, with a colored past. It sits near the malecon (sea wall) and overlooks the ocean, with acres of lush green lawns for strolling under tropical palm trees, or perhaps a swim in the pool or a mojito on the verandah as the salsa group plays. Visit with artists and musicians, students and the elderly, local people who welcome you... and happily share their cultural gifts of creative arts, crafts, music, dance, cuisine, and a joy of life that is apparent everywhere. The human spirit to live, enjoy, create, and thrive despite hardships is ever felt as we get to know the strong people who weave it together. It wouldn’t be uncommon to meet a medical doctor who is also a master mechanic and guitar player, who drives a taxi to make ends meet financially. Cuba is an experience that is unique and you won’t forget. Experience this “off limits” island during this period when it is still conserved from excessive tourism. Travel legally to be with the people of Cuba and learn about them and their culture under a People to People educational license issued to the Cross Cultural Journeys Foundation. NOTE: Cuba is the only country in the world that a U.S. citizen is barred from visiting by the U.S. Government without a license. From 1998-2003 the Cross Cultural Journeys Foundation had a license until the U.S. government terminated such travel. Cross Cultural Journeys Foundation again has a license to legally take U.S. citizens to Cuba for educational trips and to meet with Cuban citizens, as long as we conform to U.S. Government requirements. We have spent a lot of time in Cuba; it would be our pleasure to introduce you to Cuba and the people we know there. 415.332.0682 • 1-800-353-2276 • www.CrossCulturalJourneys.com [email protected] CUBA Havana ARTS Biennial May 7-12, 2012

DAILY ITINERARY

Day 1, Monday, 7 May 2012: Havana City We arrive in Havana and check into the historic Hotel Nacional. An orientation and familiarization of the area is followed by dinner at La Barraca Restaurant, located in the garden of the Hotel Nacional under a thatched roof. This restaurant serves typical Cuban food. (D)

Day 2, Tuesday, 8 May 2012: Havana City Breakfast at the hotel, followed by a walking tour of Old Havana Four Plazas. We begin with a visit to the Marquetta of the City, a model replica of the city of Havana. This offers us an orientation to the city and overview of the restoration, both in planning and completed. Tour Old Havana on foot, walking between the four main plazas that comprise Cuba’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Start at Plaza de Armas, the site of the oldest Spanish fortress in the Americas, the 1519 locale of the first mass in Cuba, and the massive Baroque seat of government known as Palacio de los Capitanes Generales. Continue to Plaza de San Francisco de Assis and Plaza Vieja, where we visit artist galleries and historic buildings and get a sense of the structure of the colonial city. Wind through historic streets spanning five centuries of historic architecture and end at Plaza de la Catedral and see the Baroque cathedral. Along the way meet the local people and engage in friendly conversation. Visit the Ernest Hemingway Room, located on the 5th floor of Ambos Mundo Hotel, in Old Havana. View the room where Hemingway lived for seven years and wrote, "For Whom The Bells Toll.” You will be able to see many of his personal belongings, including his typewriter. We stop for lunch at the Armadores de Santander's roof top restaurant. During lunch we are joined by one of Havana’s most interesting art curators and personalities, Juanito Sachet, who will spend the afternoon and evening with us. Dinner is on your own. Your guide will give you suggestions for paladares, licensed restaurants in private homes in Havana; the food is some of the best you will find in the city. There are also many good local restaurants. You will be given a map to find your way around, and help with reservations. In the paladares and restaurants you will meet local people and have the opportunity for conversation. (B,L)

Day 3, Wednesday, 9 May 2012: Havana City After breakfast at the hotel, we will visit the Cuban collections in the Museo de Bellas Artes Cuban art collection, a striking modernist building which was completed in 1953 and exemplifies the combination of sculpture with architecture in Cuban mid-century modernism. The Palace of Fine Arts houses a collection of Cuban visual art that

spans four centuries. We stop for lunch in the roof garden of the Sevilla Hotel, formerly owned by the Biltmore Hotel chain, known as the Prohibition-era winter playground for American tourists. Enjoy 360-degree views of the entire city. After lunch, We visit Havana’s Cemetario do Colon. Laid out between 1871 and 1886, the cemetery includes more than 500 Mausoleums, chapels and family vaults, sculpted in bronze, granite, marble and limestone by leading Cuban and European artist. Learn about the relationship between the cemetery and the Catholic church in Cuba. We break for lunch at the El Aljibe restaurant, a favorite outdoor thatch-roof restaurant located in the residential area of Miramar, which features criolla cuisine -- a flavor created and maintained by the family tradition since the first restaurant was founded on the El Aljibe farm.
