Duke DeGroat “M.C. for the Day”The former host of radio show, “Into Thin Air”, on WNTI, Duke grew up listening to Johnny Cash, Merle and Hank. He is a proud member of the Willie Nelson Fan Club and a dedicated concert goer. “My passion is music; southern rock, blues, folk, R&R, anything that can be danced to or somehow related to. I believe music brings out emotions and memories that can’t otherwise be recalled. I love live music, jam bands, festivals, compilations and covers. Other interests include trail running, mountain biking, volunteering and just staying involved in my community. Work hard, play harder. I’m just a humble dude who likes to have fun.”

APPALACHIA SERVICE PROJECT (ASP) provides vital housing services to low-income families living in Central Appalachia as well as transformational life experiences to those we serve, volunteers offering their service, congregations involved with ASP and entire communities.

The communities in which ASP serves generally have poverty rates up to three times the national average. One in four (25.04%) people live in poverty in these areas. In the Central Appalachian region we serve...

• 19,000 homes lack adequate kitchens• 2,000 homes lack complete plumbing• Nearly half of the families have household incomes below $20,000• One in four lives below the poverty level--more than 105,000 children, 195,000 adults, & 35,000 elderly

The specific communities in which ASP works vary slightly from year to year based on areas of greatest need, availability of facilities to house our volunteers and many other factors. However, ASP always works in each of the communities in which our Housing Services Centers are located: Lee County, VA; Perry County, KY and Wyoming County, WV, and we typically work in an additional 24 communities each summer. ASP also works year-round in our hometown area, Johnson City, TN (Carter, Sullivan & Washington counties, TN) - through our Good Neighbors program.

OUR MISSION:Appalachia Service Project is a Christian ministry, open to all people, that fosters human development by addressing the housing needs of Central Appalachia.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES:

• We believe that each person is a child of God imbued with dignity and worth.• We accept people right where they are and just the way they are.• We believe that affordable, safe, sanitary housing is a basic human right.• We are committed to witness through the good quality of our work and careful stewardship of our resources.• We believe God calls volunteers to serve others as partners in ministry and we will encourage their growth in faith as they are involved in this service.• We believe where ASP is involved in local communities we will encourage, affirm, and support social and economic justice.

What is ASP?

4th Annual Front Porch &BANDS

Kali & KaileyKailey Rocker and Kali Wilson are two young women out of Somerset County, New Jersey. Both connected dearly to their folk and country roots, these gals write up their own tunes with an original sound, as well as put their own spin on their favorite classics. The years that they still lack are made up for in their rich and understanding passion for music and all things true to it.

Randy Lee & FriendsSprung from the rolling hills of Western New York, with a few stints of driftin’, found himself transplanted smack dab in the middle of New Jersey. Randy Lee takes cues from all the old country blues and early American folk greats. Thrown in with a style all his own. His mix of blues and roots music howls with a sense of down home passion and back porch soul.

Omar MendezOmar Mendez has been playing guitar since he was 13 years old. He played in the St. Mary’s folk mass choir in Pompton Lakes. He later organized several rock bands like Frodo and the Hobbits, and “Why” (stolen from the Who). He had a solo career doing gigs at restaurants and taverns and worked for many years as Omar and Dan doing multiple covers from the 50’s through the 70’s. He is still performing solo acts as well as with the Christian rock band, 40 Nights. His influences include; Jerry Garcia, Dave Bromberg, John Prine, Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, the Band and Hot Tuna.

Mike Esposito and the ToddsChester resident Mike Esposito has played with or opened for some of the greats of bluegrass and blues. With his Dobro and National guitars he has toured overseas, appeared on national TV, and performed at Lincoln Center in NYC. He has had 100’s of TV shows use his music from his five CD’s. He is featured on over 25 CD’s. He has appeared at local venues for over 40 years.

4th Annual Front Porch &Mike is very pleased to have Todd Collins perform with him. Todd performs mainly in the northeastern US, but has performed from Maine to New Mexico. He performs in a variety of settings, ranging from Traditional and progressive bluegrass to swing, contemporary jazz, blues, rock, and classical and has performed with some of the most gifted acoustic musicians on the planet. Todd is an associate professor of music and coordinator of The Music Technology program at Morris County College. He has published three books for the mandolin with a fourth due out this year.

Todd Lanka hails from Hunterdon County, and is both an upright and electric bassist with over 25 years experience. Todd studied both jazz and classical bass at Mason Gross School of the Arts (Rutgers University; 1991-93, and jazz upright bass at William Paterson class of 1996. While no longer as active in the jazz community, he still is very involved in the blues/classic rock, and bluegrass music fields. Todd teaches full time as well, with over 20 students a week giving lessons in classical jazz upright bass, cello, guitar, electric bass, and piano.

Honky-Tonk ScoundrelsDon’t let their usual non-bluegrass, honky-tonk gigs fool you, the Honky-Tonk Scoundrels are also bluegrass fans and put on a great show that will have the crowd going in old country, country rock, bluegrass or whatever.

Jay Johnston - guitar/vocals Vern Warta - guitar/vocals Jimmy Thompson - bass/vocals Mike Reeves - squeeze box

This Year, the schedule will allow Mike Esposito to be back with his Dobro (a.k.a. resophonic guitar).

All TrioMike Alexander, Evan Lane and Pete Lister met at the County College of Morris and have been playing together for over ten years. This group highlights original music from each member and covers music from a wide range of styles and genres.

Alexander, Lane & Lister make up the ALL Trio & they’re all you’ll ever need to make a room come alive with humor, joy, & mirth! These consummate musicians have been pressured by their friends for years to start a band - so they started one together. Hailing from Northwest New Jersey, they’re willing to travel the distance to bring their indelible ovations to your ears. Email them at [email protected] for booking requests.

The CatbirdsThe Catbirds met up in the fall of 2008, jamming around Morris County, New Jersey. We play early country and rural blues – music from the jug bands of Memphis, folk songs of Appalachia, and bluegrass of Kentucky. Home-made percussion drives the rhythm. We’ll make you clap your hands and move your feet. For bookings, contact Jerry at email: [email protected], or telephone 973-243-6760.

The group was founded by George Moran at Valley Music of Long Valley, NJ. The Valley Music Fiddlers Group meets at the Studio at Valley Music Center and focuses on bringing Fiddlers Music to the community.

Keith Wilson, Kali, Kailey, and CollinKeith Wilson is a Kentucky born and bred guitar picker, singer, and songwriter who has somehow found himself living in New Jersey but who still loves his home music. His daughter Kali and her friend Kailey and their friend Collin are backing Keith up today.

Americana Troupe“Oh, brother and sister, where art thou?” Singing with the Americana Troupe, probably! The Americana Troupe (AT) is a fun-loving ensemble that brings the sounds of bluegrass, gospel, spiritual and folk music to their own Trinity United Methodist Church congregation, senior facilities, and other community programs or events. Under the leadership of John Gray Reed, instrumentation includes: upright bass, guitars, fiddles, banjo, accordion, mandolin, juice-harp, harmonica and spoons.

Page 9: 2012 Front Porch Bluegrass Program

4th Annual Front Porch &For a decade, the group has applied the old-timey approach to the spectrum of American popular music, from Stephen Foster to Brian Wilson, and each performance includes several traditional hymns and gospel numbers. The Troupe’s members hail from Long Valley, Hackettstown and Independence, New Jersey.

The AT is thrilled to participate for the third year in the Front Porch Bluegrass Festival. The troupe will be playing in Mendham this fall for a special benefit on September 8 at Saint John the Baptist Church, as well as other programs

Heavy TrafficHeavy Traffic is a four piece traditional bluegrass band established in 2001. Based out of New Jersey, Heavy Traffic plays weddings, parties, and festivals in the tri-state area. Founding member, Earl Karlsen on mandolin and vocals hosts the Bluegrass Express radio show Saturday mornings on WFDU out of Farleigh Dickinson University. The band’s hard drive can be attributed to the savvy Scruggs style banjo pickin’ of Arnie Reisman. Heavy Traffic’s high lonesome sound comes from the unique tenor vocals of Jeff Propert, who also compliments the group with his tasteful rhythm and lead guitar. This bluegrass quartet is powered by the solid bass playing of Guy Leatherman.

Page 10: 2012 Front Porch Bluegrass Program

4th Annual Front Porch &Monday Night Pickers We are called the Monday Night Pickers because we have for the last twelve years gotten together every Monday night to have a bluegrass jam. We have performed at community events in Califon and New Vernon. Played square dances for the Masonic Lodge in Chester, Long Valley Chapel. We have played at the Warren County Fair, and at many outdoor parties and house parties in the area. We have performed a few times at the Bible Book Store in Flemington and at the coffee house in High Bridge. We play a great mix of bluegrass featuring fiddle, banjo and mandolin and backed up by excellent bass and a great rhythm guitarist.
