Tommy Pearce was chosen to start the new era of men’s lacrosse for Frostburg State University in the early summer of 2009 .

Entering his second season in 2012, Pearce guided the Bobcats to a 6-11 overall record and a 1-7 mark in the Capital Athletic Conference in 2011 . The Bobcats had two players finish in the top-10 in the league in scoring while Ryan Serio was named the CAC Rookie of the Year . Frostburg opened the season with a 10-3 win over Shenandoah and finished with wins over Neumann (20-9), St . Joseph’s (19-3), Susquehanna (10-9), Marymount (11-8) and Washington & Jefferson (12-6) .

Pearce came to Frostburg State University from Gettysburg College where he served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the men’s lacrosse team for four seasons (2006-09) .

A native of Chestertown, Md ., Pearce helped Gettysburg to an incredible run during his time with the Bullets . The team won the Centennial Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of those four seasons, including a national runner-up finish in 2009 . Gettysburg collected an overall record of 66-12 and was consistently ranked in the top-10 in the nation, including a No . 5 ranking at the conclusion of his final season .

Pearce, who earned the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association 2008 Division III Outstanding Assistant Coach award, helped recruit and coach 20 All-Americans while at Gettysburg, including six in 2009.

Success at Gettysburg came not only as a coach for Pearce, but also as a player . He was a two-time All-American, garnering First Team honors in 2001 as well as being named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year and Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region Player of the Year . He helped the Bullets to four-straight conference titles and the school’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III national championship game .

Pearce graduated from Gettysburg in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in English and received his master’s degree from McDaniel College in 2008 in physical education and athletic administration .

A year ago, the Frostburg State men’s lacrosse team began its first season as a varsity sport and had a roster of young and inexperienced players. Fast forward one year to 2012, and the Bobcats boast a roster of 25 returning players without the loss of a senior from last spring .

The list of returning players, coupled with the addition of 19 newcomers should push FSU towards its goal of reaching the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament in April .

For the Bobcats to be successful this spring, they will need increase their scoring average while limiting the goals scored by their opponents . Last season, the Bobcats averaged 8 .64 goals per game and allowed 10 .37 .

“As a team, we need to learn to respect the ball more and take better shots,’ stated head coach Tommy Pearce . “We continue to work on improving every aspect of what we do .”

AttackIf there is one area where the Bobcats have plenty of experience, it’s up front. Senior Dan Dowd and sophomore Ryan Serio form a strong one-two punch that will provide plenty of fire power on attack . Individually, they each started 17 games, scored 51 points and both sit in the top-10 in career scoring . Combined, they totaled 102 points and are just one of three tandems in the CAC to register over 100 points last spring .

Dowd, a team captain, led the team with 31 goals and found the net in all but four games . He opened and closed the season with 11 goals in the first four and final four games. He totaled a season-high eight points (two goals, six assists) in a win over St . Joseph’s Maine .

Serio garnered CAC Co-Rookie of the Year honors after totaling 51 points and leading the conference in scoring among freshman . He led the Bobcats and finished third in the CAC in assists (28) and registered a point in all but two games .

Freshman Devin Colegrove will join Dowd and Serio on the starting attack after a standout high school career at Dulaney High School in Timonium, Md .

Sophomores Ricky Kneebone and Britton Hoover and junior Zach Kowatch have the ability to contribute to the success of the front line and will see plenty of action .

Kneebone appeared in 13 games (three starts) a year ago and registered four points on two goals and two assists . Kowatch played in 13 contests (five starts) and was sixth on the roster with 13 points. He finished with 10 goals, three assists and capped the year with six goals in the final seven games in which he appeared.

Hoover joins the Bobcat lineup for his first season this spring . Two years ago, he led Christopher Newport University in scoring with 44 points behind 37 goals and seven assists .

MidfieldThe Bobcats’ starting midfield lineup consists of sophomores Phill Hess and Devon Stailey and will be rounded out by six other players competing for time . Although young, Hess and Stailey appeared in all 17 games a year ago and gained valuable playing experience as freshmen. Both players will see extensive action and could play key roles in the offense this year.

A team captain, Hess started 15 games in 2011 and finished fourth on the team in points (24), third in assists (13) and fifth in goals (11) . Stailey started eight games in his first year and finished seventh in scoring (11 pts .) behind eight goals and three assists .

Sophomore Andy Luhmann will help contribute to the midfield after seeing extensive playing time in his freshman campaign. He appeared in all 17 games with five starts . He kicked off the season in stellar fashion with three goals in the season-opening win over Shenandoah. He finished the year with six goals and two assists.

Chris Rios, Greg Bourne, and Spencer Barnett are a group of freshmen that could see extensive playing time. Rios was an All-Section Honorable Mention honoree, Bourne earned four varsity letters in lacrosse at Kent County (Md .), while Barnett was a Second Team All-Lancaster County selection as a senior at Penn Manor (Pa .) .

Freshman Kyle Temple will figure into the mix in the midfield after a standout high school career at Carthage (N.Y.). He earned New York State First Team All-North and Frontier League First Team All-Star honors as a senior .

Sophomore Marcus Kyriacou will compete for time after playing in 13 games with three starts . He scored four goals and had three assists a year ago .

Douglas and Mark Petrasek return to the lineup after appearing in a combined 24 games last spring .

Douglas enters the season as the top short-stick defensive midfielder after playing in 17 games with two goals as a freshman . A versatile and quick player, Douglas was fourth on the team in ground balls (38) and sixth in caused turnovers (9). Petrasek played in seven games and totaled four goals .

Long-Stick Midfield & FaceoffThe long-stick midfield will again be handled by committee in the spring as three returning players and one newcomer will battle for playing time .

Sophomores Jake McNew and Brendan Geldart appeared in a combined 32 games last spring . Each scooped up 32 ground balls and they combined for 20 caused turnovers .

Sophomore Hunter Marshall served as a faceoff long-stick midfielder and appeared in all 17 games . Marshall showed his versatility by scoring five points on the offensive end and leading the team in ground balls (57) . At faceoff, Marshall finished 79-of-155 for a .510 winning percentage .

Sophomore Korey Bosley joins FSU for his first season in 2012 after transferring from Messiah College. He appeared in six games for the Falcons and scored one goal .

Sophomore Billy Lark returns as the team’s best statistical faceoff specialist from last year . He won 89-of-173 attempts for a .514 winning percentage and scooped up 32 ground balls .

Freshman Ian Harding will also help out with faceoff duties . He was a two-time All-Montgomery and two-time All-Division selection in lacrosse at Quince Orchard (Md .)

DefenseIn order to improve on the team’s overall goals against average, the Frostburg defense will have to step up and limit the opponents scoring opportunities . That starts with the return of senior team captain Zach Hiller .

Hiller started 15 games last year, grabbed 24 ground balls and caused eight turnovers . He is the lone returning player to have earned a starting spot heading into the season opener .

Sophomore Jeffrey Nagle and freshman Paul Newman will compete for time on defense with sophomore returners Kevin Kinney and Brad Miller .

Nagle played for NCAA Division II Florida Southern last spring and started 10 games . He is a former Maryland State Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Star and All-Anne Arundel County selection at Broadneck (Md .) High School . Newman was team captain for Archbishop Spalding (Md .) .

Kinney and Miller return to the roster after combining to play in 29 games last year . Kinney picked up 11 ground balls and caused seven turnovers, while Miller started all 17 games and added 28 ground balls .

GoalkeeperSophomore Tyler Haines took on the tough task of starting 16 games in net as a freshman and he enters as the projected starter this season .

Haines finished second in the CAC with 198 saves and ended the season on a high note earning CAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. His in-game experience from a year ago should only help strengthen his numbers and help lower the team overall goals against average .

Freshman Alex Sharrer will push Haines for playing time as the backup.

ScheduleIt goes without saying that the FSU men’s lacrosse team will once again face one of the toughest schedules in the region . According to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), the Bobcats square off against No . 1 ranked Salisbury (Mar . 24) and No . 7 ranked Stevenson (Apr . 18) . FSU will also face Widener (Mar . 10), who sits just outside the preseason top-20 rankings .

Frostburg State kicks off the season with three-straight home games and opens with six of its first eight contests at Bobcat Stadium . Shenandoah (Feb . 18), Catholic (Feb . 25) and Washington & Jefferson (Feb . 29) highlight the home stand to open the season, while Goucher (Mar . 7) and Widener visit Frostburg in early March .

Frostburg opens CAC action on March 17 when St . Mary’s (Md .) visits Bobcat Stadium . The Bobcats round out their conference home slate with Wesley (Mar . 31), Marymount (Apr . 4) and York (Pa .) (Apr . 14) .

From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students . Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J . Ort Library, the Harold J . Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all

situated on 260 beautiful acres . Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located . Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School . The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education . The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training . Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission .
