Perhaps there is no greater time to observe the academic quality of Gardner-Webb University than right now. All of the necessary factors for academic excellence – faculty, students, resources, curriculum – are working in conjunction with one another to gain widespread acclaim from alumni, friends, trustees, the media and the community. Over 130 full-time faculty members comprise a group of educators at GWU being heralded as the "premiere class of instructors ever assembled at the University." Over 80 percent of the faculty hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, and many boast of well-documented activities in the business and professional worlds. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 15 to 1, Gardner-Webb is able to provide personal instruction to its students, who now number over 4,000, making Gardner-Webb the fifth-largest private institution in North Carolina. New technological features in our library enhance the learning experience for a higher quality student.

Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his sevenh year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006.

Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987.

A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs.

In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005.

After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualified candidate right here at the university.”

Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005.

Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission.

He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, officially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a tremendous faculty and consistently evolving curriculum.

Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and five grandchildren.

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 15th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 29th year in athletics administration.

The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008.

Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in athletics facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming, was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department.

GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last four academic years.

This past year, Gardner-Webb posted its highest finish in the annual Big South Conference Sasser Cup, taking No. 4 in the final standings of the all-sports race. The women’s basketball team captured its first Big South Tournament title, advanc-ing to the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament. Two other teams – women’s soccer and baseball – advanced to the league tournament title game in their respective seasons as well.

Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ student-athletes.

GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy.

Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of fans across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007.

Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former mem-ber of Gardner-Webb’s football and tennis teams, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984).

After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 53, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three chil-dren, Travis, a 2009 graduate of Furman University; Danielle, a senior at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy, a senior at Crest High School.

Rusty Stroupe (612-483-1, 256-250-1 at GWU) is in his 10th season with the Runnin' Bulldogs, and has made a tremendous impact on the baseball program, the overall campus and the community since joining the Gardner-Webb family prior to the 2003 season. The Cherryville, N.C., native has taken the 'Dogs new heights at the NCAA Division I level and crossed the 600-win plateau last season – as well as reaching his 250th win with the Runnin' Bulldogs. Stroupe, who has more than 20 years of college head coaching experience under his belt, has led Gardner-Webb to a pair of conference tournament cham-pionship game appearances, with the 'Dogs falling just short in the Big South title game in 2011 and in the famed 15-inning Atlantic Sun Conference title game in 2008. GWU finished with a top-100 RPI for the first time in program history. Stroupe has led GWU to at least 25 wins in eight of his nine seasons at the helm, and has posted five finishes in the top-5 in conference play. In 2011, the 'Dogs were one of the nation's most potent offensive teams, ranking 37th nationally with a .302 team average and among the Big South's best hitting squads all season long. Gardner-Webb finished the season ranked in the top-50 in scoring (26th), runs scored (29th), hits (33rd), doubles (44th) and doubles per game (49th). Defensively, Gardner-Webb ranked No. 23 nationally in double plays turned. When the dust settled at the end of the 2011 season, Gardner-Webb had posted a strong 34-23-1 record that included a weekend sweep of NCAA Tournament participant and preseason top-25 member St. John's in March. The Runnin' Bulldogs took well to their sparkling new home stadium, forging a 17-10 mark in John Henry Moss Stadium / Bill Masters Field. First baseman Dusty Quattlebaum was named Big South Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and became the first GWU baseball player to be named first-team Capital One Academic All-America. In 2010, Stroupe's very young squad was competitive throughout a tough schedule, forging 25 wins that included a win over ACC member Wake Forest on the road. His 2009 team established numerous team records offensively, breaking the school's season batting record with a .327 average - topping the .324 aver-age that had stood as the top mark since 1971. The 2009 squad also set single-season records as a team for on-base percentage (.398) and most home runs (65), while third baseman Justin Loyd became the latest member of the schools .400 club, earning first-team All-Big South honors. Gardner-Webb has shown under Stroupe that it can compete with the best, and with style. The Runnin' Bulldogs ran to a school-record 122 stolen bases in 2008, breaking the record of 119 set just one year earlier in 2007. GWU also made a late run that gave the 'Dogs the No. 5 seed at the 2007 A-Sun Tournament, and

posted a pair of non-conference wins at SEC member Georgia - marking the fourth time in six games against Georgia that GWU has prevailed under Stroupe's watchful eye. In 2006, Stroupe led a very young team to 24 wins, which included early victories over Missouri Valley Conference champ Evansville and ACC member Maryland. Stroupe also saw fifth-year senior Blake Lalli sign with the Chicago Cubs prior the June, 2006, draft as a free agent - marking the fifth Diamond 'Dog under Stroupe's watch to ink a deal with a major league organization. In 2005, Gardner-Webb finished in a tie for fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference - the third year in a row that GWU had finished at least fifth in the powerful league. GWU also picked up its first A-Sun Tournament win, upsetting No. 1 seed Troy in the opening round. Ace Zach Ward became the highest drafted player in GWU baseball history - going in the third round of June's MLB Amateur Draft, capping a record-setting career in Boiling Springs. Ward signed with the Reds, marking the fourth player to sign a contract with a Major League club since 2003 - Stroupe's first season with the program. Catcher Jay McConnell was named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America. In 2004, Stroupe's Bulldogs posted a 19-11 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference, finishing only one game out of a tie for second place in one of the country's most competitive leagues. A No. 4 seed in the A-Sun Tournament followed, capping off a 32-25 overall campaign - hich included two wins over No. 14 Florida Atlantic in mid-March. Seniors Jeff Long (Atlanta Braves, 12th Round) and Joey Siak (St. Louis Cardinals, FA) continued their careers on the professional level after the 2004 season was completed. Stroupe led his first set of Bulldogs to a 33-23 record in 2003, including an 18-15 mark in the A-Sun. In the process, the Bulldogs qualified for the A-Sun Tournament, which takes the top six of 12 total teams from the regular season standings. Ward was also named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team, becoming the first Gardner-Webb player so honored. During the Bulldogs' 33-win trek through the 2003 season, Stroupe led the squad to a pair of wins over SEC foe Georgia, as well as wins over preseason top-25 squads UCF (2), Florida Atlantic (1) and Stetson (1). GWU rose to as high as No. 53 in the Division I RPI - before finishing the season with a rating index of 79 (out of 287 Division I teams). Stroupe also has head college coaching experience at Lander (1998-2002), Brevard College (1993-1997) and North Greenville College (1991-1992). He and his wife, Karen, have three sons - Will (19), Cal (16) and J.T. (12). In addition to his coaching career, Stroupe has written a book and is a regular contributor as a non-sports columnist with the Shelby Star.

Assistant coach Kent Cox is in his sixth season with the Gardner-Webb program, and has established himself as a major part of the Bulldogs' success. Cox will continue to work with the Bulldog hitters and infielders, in addition to serving as the program's recruiting coordinator. In 2011, Gardner-Webb was one of the nation's most potent offen-sive squads, ranking in the top-50 in scoring (26th), runs per game (29th), hits (33rd), batting average (37th), doubles (44th) and doubles per game

(46th). Slugger Dusty Quattlebaum finished 13th nationally in doubles per game, nearly breaking the school's single-season record in that category en route to Academic All-America honors. Gardner-Webb batted .302 with 399 runs scored and 118 doubles in 2011, and advanced to the 2011 Big South Conference Tournament Championship Game. In 2010, GWU batted a solid .312 and averaged 7.0 runs per game with a very young group of hitters -belting 46 home runs on the year. In 2009, Gardner-Webb set new school records for season batting average (.327) and home runs (65), just one season after posting the most total bases (999) in GWU history. Three of Cox's hitters, Daniel Cooke, Justin Loyd and Brock Miller, each earned All-Big South Conference honors in 2009, with Loyd becoming the first Diamond 'Dog to bat .400 since the program's move to NCAA Division I. Prior to joining the GWU family, Cox spent the four seasons as an assis-tant coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, Campbell University, in Buies Creek, N.C. During that span, the Camels experienced a burst in their offensive output, with several players ranking among the best in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Under Cox's guidance in 2006, first baseman Mike Priest led the A-Sun in batting with a .402 average, runs scored (62), total bases (151) and slugging percentage (.674) - and was named Academic All-America for the second season in a row. Cox played for the Camels from 1993-1996, earning Academic All-America honors himself in 1995. A three-team All-Conference choice on the diamond and a three-time Academic All-District selection, Cox finished as Campbell's all-time leader in hits (269) and seventh with a .348 career bat-ting average. He ranks in the top-10 in Campbell history in runs (147), steals (32), doubles (39) and total bases (341). Cox is also the toughest player in Campbell history to strike out, fanning just once every 16.8 times at the plate. Cox is also a veteran broadcaster, having served Campbell as a television analyst for men's basketball games and as the play-by-play voice for Camels' athletics for two seasons. A native of Wilmington, N.C., Cox played prep baseball at Hoggard (N.C.) High and attended St. Andrews College before transferring and playing his four seasons on the diamond at Campbell. In addition to his most recent coaching experience at Campbell, Cox served as a volunteer coach with the Camels in 2001, after spending two years on the staff at NAIA Montreat (N.C.) College.

Assistant coach Ray Greene is in his first season with the Gardner-Webb University baseball program, and will be in charge of the Diamond Dogs' pitching staff. Greene joined the GWU program after spending five seasons as pitch-ing coach and recruiting coordina-tor at Pfeiffer (N.C.) University. The Laurinburg, N.C., native has head coaching experience in the Coastal Plains League (Thomasville Hi Toms), the SCBL (Morganton Aggies). He started his coaching career at St. Andrew's Presbyterian (N.C.)

College, serving as an assistant coach from 2002-2005. Greene also served a stint at Alfred State (N.Y.) University, before returning south to begin his work at Pfeiffer. As a player, Green pitched for three seasons at Campbell (N.C.) University, before wrapping up his career at St. Andrew's. He graduated from UNC-Pembroke in 2001.

Volunteer assistant Aaron Milleris in his first season with the Gardner-Webb program as a coach after an outstanding four-year career playing for the Runnin' Bulldogs. The Beaulaville, N.C., native graduated from Gardner-Webb in 2011 and is currently enrolled in graduate school. He will coach first base this season and will also work with the team's infielders. Miller batted .326 with six dou-bles, 30 RBI and a team-high 17 steals as a senior in 2011, helping the 'Dogs to a 34-23-1 record and a

berth in the Royal Purple Big South Conference Tournament title game. It marked the third time in his career that Miller batted over .320 for a season. The shortstop batted .339 with 48 runs and 46 RBI as a junior, stole 11 bases and belted 15 doubles. As a sophomore, Miller batted .365 with five RBI in 29 games played, and posted a .440 on base percentage. Miller posted a .295 average in 37 games played as a freshman in 2008, helping Gardner-Webb to a berth in the 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament championship game. Miller starred at East Duplin (N.C.) High in both football and baseball before enrolling at Gardner-Webb.

An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training faculty and staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 20 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and reha-bilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortu-nate to have a faculty and staff of nine certified athletic trainers and a coop-erative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The athletic training educational program recently completed its full accreditation by CAATE, marking an exciting moment in the program’s history. Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training students must complete a three-part examination conducted by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association’s Board of Certification to become Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assis-tant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The 2012 season has the potential to be an exciting one for Gardner-Webb University's baseball program. Head baseball coach Rusty Stroupe enters his 10th season at the helm of the Runnin' Bulldogs with a team many expect to make a push up the Big South standings after finishing fifth last regular season and advancing to the Royal Purple Big South Conference Championship Game. A strong core of eight position players who played in at least 40 games returns, including three of the teams' top-4 RBI men. Seven pitch-ers return who saw significant action on the mound in 2011 - including a deep collection of bullpen arms that made a combined 107 relief appear-ances. Add to that core a capable group of freshmen, both at the plate and on the mound, and hopes are high.

PITCHING STAFF

Gardner-Webb's success in 2011 was buoyed by a tremendous bullpen, which helped the Runnin' Bulldogs forge an impressive 25-2-1 record when leading after the sixth inning. In fact, Gardner-Webb lost just once when leading after the eighth - with the returning tandem of Adam Izokovic and Jeff Howell combining for 13 saves and an eye-popping 56 appearances. Howell was one of the Big South's most durable, and versatile, relievers. The Kings Mountain, N.C., junior made 30 appearances - sec-

ond-most in GWU history - and delivered a 4-1 record, 1.89 ERA, seven holds and a career-high seven saves. His team-high 52 strikeouts came in just 47.2 innings of work, and his control was evident with only 13 walks issued. Izokovic, a senior submariner, is just two saves away from Gardner-Webb's career record - currently held by Daniel Planck and Kevin Wellmon. The 6-foot-5 righty has 14 saves in his three seasons to date, along with a 9-6 record on the mound. Izokovic made 26 appearances last season, tying his career-best with six saves. Junior righty Brandon Boling made 16 appearances for the 'Dogs last season, chewing up 41.1 innings - and is expected to be a valuable bullpen piece again in 2012. Boling, who made seven starts, is another versatile arm in the Bulldogs' arsenal. Matt Liedberg, another experi-enced righty, enjoyed a solid fall season and will be heavily relied upon as well after pitching just 8.1 innings last season. The GWU pen gained substantial depth through recruiting, with freshman Jimmy Moore (Miami, Fla. / Westminster Christian) making a notable impact during the fall. Moore, a 6-foot-5 righty with a fastball that reaches well into the upper 80s, was an All-Dade County selection as a senior last season while pitching for one of the Southeast's top prep programs. Lefthanders Will Canady (Cumming, Ga. / West Forsyth HS) and Mitch Warner (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg HS) each bring solid potential as relievers, as does southpaw Stephen Gilmore (Concord, N.C. / First Assembly Christian).

Junior righthander Conner Scarborough led Gardner-Webb with a 7-2 pitching ledger in 2011, including a combined shutout of Charleston Southern in the Royal Purple Big South Conference Tournament (pictured above).

The front end of Gardner-Webb's starting rotation will be experi-enced in terms of innings pitched, with juniors Brock Wilson (Big Island, Va. / Liberty Christian Academy) and Conner Scarborough (High Point, N.C. / High Point Christian School) each working nearly 50 innings in 2011. Wilson, who has seen his velocity sit in the low 90s heading into 2012, went 4-1 in 21 appearances last season - with two starts. The talented righthander is poised for a very strong season, and is capable of a heavy workload. Scarborough established a new career-high with a 7-2 ledger in 2011, ranking third on the team with 10 starts - the most of any righthander on the staff. Scarborough ranked fourth on the team in innings pitched and worked a combined shutout to beat Charleston Southern in his final start of the season at league tournament. Perhaps the team's biggest surprise coming out of fall practice was sophomore Andrew Barnett (High Point, N.C. / High Point Christian School), a young righty who started to show signs of breaking out near the end of the 2011 season. Barnett has seen his velocity jump into the low 90s and his effectiveness on the mound has him squarely in the mix for a spot in the rotation after making 17 relief appearances last season. A pair of very talented freshmen will also make a push for rotation duty. Lefthander Beau Hilton (Jacksonville, Fla. / Bartram Trail HS) and righthander Matt Fraudin (Upper St. Clair, Pa. / Upper St. Clair HS) each entered their college careers with heavy expectations, and each responded by impressing the coaching staff during fall practice. Hilton, who tossed a pair of no-hitters as a senior in 2011, will be the team's top southpaw option as a starter. Fraudin, another hard-throwing youngster with a fastball capable of reaching into the low 90s, was rated as one of the nation's top-400 prospects in the Class of 2011.

HITTERS

Gardner-Webb's offense will once again by powered by a veteran group, with redshirt senior Dusty Quattlebaum, senior Adam McFarland, redshirt junior John Harris and redshirt senior Zeke Blanton each batting over .300 last season - and combining to drive in 153 runs and score 232. Quattlebaum (Boiling Springs, N.C. / Crest HS) earned first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors a season ago, batting .320 with a team-high 25 doubles, six home runs and 49 RBI. He was twice named Big South Conference Player of the Week and was the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week once. McFarland (Boiling Springs, N.C. / Crest HS) also had a breakout season, batting .321 with 15 doubles, five home runs and 49 RBI. His defense in right field was also valuable, with seven outfield assists and steady fielding all season. Harris (Kennesaw, Ga. / Kennesaw Mountain HS) was a mainstay behind the plate in 2011, batting a career-high .314 with 33 RBI and 13 doubles - and will man that position again this season, while also con-tinuing to see spot duty at first base and as a designated hitter. Blanton (Forest City, N.C. / East Rutherford HS) started 42 games as the team's designated hitter last season, and responded with a career-high .304 batting average, 28 runs scored and 23 RBI - and batted a robust .517 when leading off an inning. His efforts in the Big South Tournament included a 4-of-5 effort in the win over Radford and eight hits in five games played. The rest of Gardner-Webb's veteran core of hitters includes center-fielder Benji Jackson (Huntersville, N.C. / Home School), third baseman

Brad Collins (Weddington, N.C. / Weddington HS), outfielder Danny Yelverton (Weddington, N.C. / Weddington HS), infielder/outfielder Scott Coleman (Wilmington, N.C. / Hoggard HS), catcher Chris Rubessa (Cumming, Ga. / West Forsyth HS) and infielder Ryan Allen (Oxford, N.C. / Webb HS). Jackson enjoyed a strong season as a sophomore, batting .280 with 40 runs scored, eight doubles, three home runs and 21 RBI - batting mostly in the leadoff spot. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder has packed on 20 pounds of muscle since last season and has shown impressive power at times during his career to date. Collins and Coleman split time at third base last season, but both will be in the lineup full time in 2012 - with Coleman logging time in the outfield and Collins manning the hot corner. Coleman, a four-time All-State choice in high school, was one of the team's hottest hitters to start the 2011 season and is healthy heading into 2012. Yelverton is potentially the team's top defensive outfielder and brings tremendous speed to the batting order. He batted .293 in 42 games last season, and has impressed the coaching staff with his bat during early spring practice. Allen is a solid option at second base, and has likely worked himself into the starting lineup at that position to start the 2012 season. Rubessa will continue in his role as the team's top reserve behind the plate after making 14 starts there as a freshman. Redshirt freshman Adam Tiller (Virginia Beach, Va. / Greenbrier Christian School) will provide quality depth in the outfield after sitting out last season and moving from behind the plate. Tiller starred at national high school power Greenbrier Christian School before joining the Gardner-Webb program, and is a capable hitter. Speed merchant Alex Newman (Mocksville, N.C. / Davie County HS) will also push for time in the outfield after a standout career in both football and baseball on the high school level. The middle infield will be young after the graduation of two senior starters, with Allen joined by freshmen Scott Johnson (Wilmington, N.C. / Hoggard HS), Ryan Hodge (Charlotte, N.C. / Butler HS) and Henry Rundio (Dallas, N.C. / North Gaston HS). Johnson, Hodge and Rundio are each capable of playing both second base and shortstop, with Hodge the only lefthanded batter in the group. Freshman catcher/first baseman Brantley Smith (Indian Trail, N.C. / Grace Academy) has impressive power potential at the plate, having belted 33 home runs in his final two prep seasons. Smith will be one of the team's top reserves behind the plate and a viable option as a pinch hitter early in 2012.
