Letter from the President & CEO

Dear HACR Stakeholder, This past April, the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR) held its signature annual programs and events in Chicago.

In this issue of the HACR Corporate Observer newsletter, we are proud to feature highlights of HACR’s success, which would not have been possible without the continued support of our participants and sponsors.

This year, we celebrated another milestone with the 20th Annual HACR Symposium: The Power of Hispanic Inclusion™, which brought together nearly 300 executive leaders from Fortune 500 and HACR corporate member companies, as well as community leaders from our coalition members and other national organizations. As the symposium’s main highlight, the HACR CEO Roundtable featured insightful anecdotes from AARP

CEO A. Barry Rand and MillerCoors CEO Tom Long.

We also hosted the fifth annual HACR Corporate Directors Summit™, the fourth annual HACR Corporate Executives Forum™, and the second annual HACR Corporate Achievers Summit, which included dynamic keynote speakers such as Kindred Healthcare CEO Paul Diaz, AMC Entertainment CEO Gerardo “Gerry” Lopez and GameStop CEO Paul Raines. The discussions analyzed the current state of Hispanic inclusion in corporate boardrooms and C-suites in an effort to trace a roadmap for future improvement.

Now in its sixth year, the HACR Young Hispanic Corporate Achievers™ program recognized 30 young executives in Corporate America who have shown leadership qualities at their respective companies along with a proven commitment to the Hispanic community.

You will also find in this issue news and highlights from our coalition partners and corporate members as they continue to promote diversity and inclusion across all sectors of the United States and Puerto Rico.

Finally, I would like to encourage all Fortune 100 companies, including our corporate members, to participate in the 2012 HACR Corporate Inclusion Index survey. Eligible companies have until Monday, August 6 to submit their information.

Thank you for being an Advocate for Hispanic inclusion in Corporate America and for actively promoting the goals and initiatives of HACR.

Sincerely,

Carlos F. Orta President & CEO

Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) continues its mission to advance the Hispanic community

In 2012, the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI)’s mission of “Advancing the Hispanic Community’s Diversity of Thought” has supported future Hispanic global leaders through internships on Capitol Hill and in Corporate America; introduced college and high school students to Hispanic

leaders in the public and private sectors; and supported students in STEM fields with academic credit for Dartmouth’s Tuck Business Bridge Program.

The CHLI Annual Gala and Leadership Awards brought together elected and appointed officials, prominent international representatives, national Hispanic organization leaders and corporate executives for an extraordinary event and experience in Washington, D.C. that celebrated the Americas. President Porfirio Lobo Sosa of Honduras received the CHLI International Relations award; Congressman Thaddeus McCotter was awarded the CHLI Leadership in Public Service; and Ralph de la Vega, AT&T Mobility president, received the CHLI Corporate Leadership Award.

CHLI’s Trade & International Affairs Symposium will be held

in Washington, D.C. at the Newseum in October. The symposium, themed “Advancing the Americas,”

will bring together international business leaders, experts on trade, members of the diplomatic community, foreign ministers and U.S. government officials to discuss trade and business issues that affect U.S. global competiveness.

CHLI’s internship opportunities and upcoming events are available on www.chli.org.

HACU awarded GSA contract for its internship program

The Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU) has been awarded a Government Services Administration (GSA) contract for its HACU National Internship Program (HNIP). The GSA contract will allow government agencies to sole source and will accelerate the federal purchase cycle,

significantly streamlining federal participation in HNIP.

This year, HNIP, the nation’s largest Hispanic-focused internship program, is celebrating 20 years of providing interns to the federal government and corporations with total placements approaching 10,000 students many of whom have gone on to full-time government or corporate careers.

The HNIP Emerald Gala to be held on October 22, 2012, will commemorate the accomplishments of the program since its inception in 1992. The event will take place at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. For tickets or sponsorship

National Hispana Leadership Institute Celebrates 25 Years of Achievement

To address the disparity of representation of Latinas in leadership positions, the National Hispana Leadership Institute, a national 501(c)(3) organization based in Washington, D.C., was created in 1987. Since its inception, NHLI has created a unique niche in its contribution to leadership development in this country. Among its many accomplishments, its work with the Executive Leadership program (ELP), Latinas Learning to Lead (LLL) program, as well as Advancing Latinas in Non Profits (ALL IN), has catapulted the

organization to one of the nation’s premier training institutions. As it exclusively focuses on

the largest female minority group in the United States and Puerto Rico, the organization has also contributed greatly to the wider Latino community and the nation as a whole.

This year, NHLI is celebrating its 25th anniversary, where a track record of achievement and 25 years of building a Latina legacy will be commemorated and honored. The 25th Anniversary conference will be held December 10-11, 2012 at the Mayflower Hotel, in Washington, D.C. The conference will feature a series of leadership development workshops and trainings, in

addition to its renowned Mujer Awards Gala.

SER National launches SER Career Prep High School

SER National, Education To Go (ed2go) and Smart Horizons Online Education joined forces to launch SER Career Prep High School, which provides students with a convenient system that allows them to receive a high school diploma and career preparation resources.

The career online high school curriculum is standards-based and objective-driven. The curriculum complies with the State of Florida Department of Education’s Career Preparatory Diploma and meets competitive standards of other national content associations.

“Working with ed2go fits into SER’s larger strategy of providing education and employment opportunities for those who have struggled within traditional settings,” said Ignacio Salazar, president and CEO of SER National. “One of our main target populations is out-of-school youth—students who might

be 19 or 20 and who don’t want to go back into a traditional setting where they’re not going to learn well because they feel out of place. Re-engaging these individuals into the education

process is one of our main goals. SER Career Prep High School represents an important new educational opportunity that utilizes the latest technologies to help these kinds of students achieve their career goals.”

SER Career Prep High School allows students to learn in accordance with their schedule and with access to coursework at anytime.

United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) hosts 2012 Student Leadership Series

Our 2012 Student Leadership Series (SLS) has impacted 22,495 students to date in 16 states. The program is expected to reach 50,000 students from middle school to college by the end of this calendar year.

The goal of our SLS is to help every Latino family get its first high school graduate, or its first son or daughter to enroll in a post-secondary education or training program, or its first graduate from a post-secondary education or training program.

SLS programs range from Stay-in-School Rallies for middle school students, career and college recruitment fairs for junior high and high school students, leadership summits for college students, leadership training for parents, and professional development for counselors, teachers, and administrators.

Our objectives are to motivate students to improve their academic performance, reduce

the dropout rate, increase the graduation rate, increase post-secondary enrollment and completion, promote leadership

development, improve the quality of parental involvement in their children’s education, and expand the professional skill sets for educators.

In 2013 our Student Leadership Series will reach more than 100,000 students, parents, and educators in 35 states.

Top executives from Fortune 500 and HACR corporate member companies gathered on April 13-15 in Chicago for the fourth annual meeting of the HACR Corporate Executives Forum™ (CEF).

This unique event created an open forum for participants that afforded them the opportunity to discuss different challenges, share best practices and exchange business solutions, all while establishing a network of influential peers and also Fortune 500 corporate directors.

“This was my third year attending the HACR Corporate Executives Forum™, and I can honestly say that each year the program gets better and I get more out of it. This year’s event was another wonderful opportunity to network with

colleagues and board members who understand and advocate the importance of a diversified workforce at all levels. I’m honored to work for Target, a company that shares the same beliefs, and I am looking forward to our tremendous partnership,” said Juan Galarraga, Vice President Healthcare and Store Compliance at Target.

This year, 30 corporate executives participated in a three-day program that included several business sessions ranging in topics from corporate governance and executive leadership, to

the business case for Hispanic inclusion and an in-depth look at the changing landscape of the Hispanic community in the United States. The HACR CEF participants enjoyed joint sessions with the HACR CDS members that featured sessions by Dr. William Klepper’s from Columbia University who presented the BP Case Study; and a presentation by professors Richie Zweigenhaft and William “Bill” Domhoff co-authors of the New CEOs: Women, African American, Latino, and Asian American Leaders of Fortune 500 Companies.

Understanding The Affordable Care Act By Rocky Egusquiza, VP, AARP Multicultural Markets

What’s in the Affordable Care Act (ACA)? How does it affect your life and the lives of your loved ones? Helping people make sense of this complex law and understand the health care choices available to them prompted AARP to develop the AARP Health Law Guide.

This personalized online tool provides answers to questions that Americans have about their current and future benefits and protections under the law. Available in English and Spanish, this unique tool gives users real-time information specifically tailored for each reader. Answers to six simple questions allow the guide to create a personalized report that elaborates on the following:

Provides information about benefits available right now and those available in the next few years when the health care law is fully effective;

Explains benefits and protections, such as expanded coverage for preventive care and screenings, and protections against insurance cancellations and placing limits on health insurance coverage;

Describes state specific programs and resources for people who are uninsured or who are having difficulty finding coverage.

Go to www.aarp.org/healthlawguide or www.aarp.org/guiadelaleydesalud to use the guide.

CSX Hosted 2012 Inclusion Forum

Supporting the commitment to develop and sustain a workforce that reflects the diversity of its local communities and customer base, CSX hosted its 2012 Inclusion Forum in February. Hundreds of CSX colleagues gathered at the company’s headquarters in Jacksonville, Fla. for the opportunity to commend progress on inclusion.

CSX is nationally recognized by several organizations and publications for its ongoing dedication to an inclusive and diverse workforce. CSX employees participate in more than 30 Inclusion Groups and Councils throughout the company’s 23-state network. The groups are required to establish goals that align with CSX business imperatives.

Joining the effort is CSX’s Hispanic Inclusion Group (HIG), which actively promotes and supports initiatives of the Hispanic community. In addition to community service events, CSX’s Hispanic inclusion group held a “lunch-and-learn” that featured guest speaker Donna Alvarado, a CSX board member since 2006. Members also attended the “Doing Business with Puerto Rico” seminar, which was chaired by HIG member Ellia Pico as part of her role as Vice President of the nonprofit organization Sister Cities Association San Juan. “Doing Business with Puerto Rico” was designed to help identify outlets to increase trade between Jacksonville and Puerto Rico.

Ford Celebrates Five Years of Supporting Next Generation of Latino Leaders

For the fifth consecutive year, Ford Motor Company Fund is sponsoring the Smithsonian Latino Center’s Young Ambassadors Program. The program is a national, interdisciplinary leadership development program for graduating high school seniors aimed at fostering pride in Latino culture and promoting higher education while exposing students to the arts, sciences and humanities via the Smithsonian Institution and its resources.

Through Ford’s support up to 22 students are selected for a week-long seminar in Washington, D.C. followed by a summer internship in a museum or cultural institution around the country.

“The Young Ambassadors Program provides students a once-in-a-lifetime educational opportunity,” said Joedis Avila, community outreach manager, Ford Motor Company Fund. “Since its start more than 60 years ago, Ford Fund has supported innovative educational programs for the next generation.”

Students are selected based on demonstrated interest; commitment and excellence in the arts, sciences and humanities; academic record; leadership experience; and dedication to community service.

“The Young Ambassadors Program opened my eyes to a world of Latino culture, instilling pride in my Latino identity and thus impacted my life’s work to promote Latino contributions in arts and culture,” said Adrián Aldaba, Young Ambassador, 2008.
