8. a) Deduce the expression for the effort of the Porter

governor.

b) The mass of each ball in a Wilson-Hertnell type of

governor is 2·5 kg. The length of ball arm of each ball-

crank lever is 100 mm whereas the length of the sleeve

arm of bell-crank leaver is 80 mm. The min equilibrium

speed is 200 rpm, when radius of rotation is 100 mm.

When the sleeve is lifted by 8 mm, the equilibrium

speed is 212 rpm. The stiffness of each of the springs

cranks are at right angles. The whole of the rotating and

10. a) For a high speed rotating shaft carrying a number of

masses in different planes, put down the problems may

appear if the system is completely unbalanced.

b) A shaft carries four rotating masses A, B, C and D in

this order along its axis. The mass A may be assumed

140 mm and D at 180 mm. The masses of A, C and D

are 15 kg, 10 kg and 8 kg respectively. The planes of

revolution of A and B are 150 mm apart and of B and C

b) The equation of the turning moment curve of a three

the crank angle in radians. The moment of inertia of the

flywheel is 1000 kg m2 and the mean speed is

300 r.p.m. Calculate the maximum fluctuation of the

speed of the flywheel in percentage when (i) the resisting

torque is constant, (ii) the resting torque is

12. a) Find the natural frequency of the vibratory system

shown in the figure below, considering the mass

of spring per unit lengths is 1m .
