SULI Welcome 2012IntroductionsSLAC Science Education DirectorApurva MehtaSLAC Program Manager - Eric ShupertSULI Program Director - Steve RockSULI Program Manager - Maria Mastrokyriakos Resident Assistant (Dorm) - Juan Santiago-Gonzalez, Salem Cheneret Web Page -http://www2.slac.stanford.edu/suli/2012 Schedules, Computing, lists, etc.Fewer of us than you!

2SLAC OPERATIONSDOE has many Research LabsMilitary: (LLL) Livermore, Sandia, Oak Ridge, HanfordOpen (no classified research): SLAC, LBL (Berkeley), Fermilab, Jefferson LabContractors manage the Labs. Mostly Universities or consortiums of UniversitiesIncreasing number of for-profit contractorsDesigned to isolate Labs from political control of scienceMany scientific advisory panels But DOE (and Congress) control the money.Stanford Manages SLACStaff are Stanford Employees.

SLAC SPEAK DICTIONARYINTERNATIONAL SCIENCEHigh Energy Physics All results publishedMostly for richer countiesCERN: International European Lab (1954)LHC financed by CERN and many other countriesCollaboration with USSR & China during Cold WarNow, Visa Problems for entering U.S.Many Projects too expensive for 1 countryILC includes Americas, Europe, AsiaLHC

HOW (most of) YOU FIT IN Part of a larger project Learn about big picture and how you fit in.A small, but important contributionLarge projects have failed or been delayed because of small design problems on single parts (e.g. LHC) or miscalculationsReal RESEARCH ProjectResult is not known in advanceCannot check your work against Answer sheetNo Test to see if you have memorized thingsYou will make a meaningful contribution to the bigger project.

HOW YOU FIT INMistakesYou will probably make many errors, do things the wrong way, have equipment which fails, coding problems, Learn to notice when things look inconsistent or are nonsense. e.g. Is the computer output the right order of magnitude?Keep a Logbook of your work so you can remember what you did! We all forget or think we remember things that did not happenCheck with your mentor. Experienced people know about common problems and the approximate results. Logbook! If you do not understand, ASK !!!!!
