MONTEREY, Calif. While manya recent visitor to the Defense Lan-guage Institute Foreign LanguageCenter (DLIFLC) has stressed theimportance of cultural training in

conjunction with language learn-ing, DLIFLCs Persian Farsi facultyand staff used the occasion ofNowruz to share rst-hand an im-portant celebration of their culture.

Nowruz, or new day, spansacross a wide range of culturesand practices and is celebratedas far west as Albania, Turkey, andIran eastward, and through manyformer Soviet republics such asTajikistan and Kyrgyzstan in southand central Asia.

The festival is recognized as thebirth of spring and marks the of-cial New Year on the Iranian calen-dar, which takes place on the ver-nal equinox, usually around March21. Although no longer religious innature, Nowruz originated in Persiaas a Zoroastrian holy festival morethan 2,500 years ago.

    Students at DLIFLC typically

spend long hours studying theirnew language, and jump at achance to break from the normand learn through doing. Afterspending eight hours a day in the

classroom, taking a break to learnabout the culture refreshes ourlanguage learning, said Airman1st Class Abdul Madjid, a PersianFarsi student.

According to Goli, a PersianFarsi instructor, Nowruz is thebiggest national celebration ofIran. It lasts for 13 days and wecelebrate it with families, friendsand loved ones.

DLIFLCs Persian Farsi studentslearn about Nowruz right from

the beginning. The instructorsinclude understanding of religionand customs in the curriculumbecause it is always part of theirtests and this is part of theculture, said Goli.

They are very happy to learnsomething totally different. Theyknow all the names of the haftitems that we put on that table, ex-

plained Goli, referring to the Haftseen table set out as part of everyNowruz celebration. This table laysout items beginning with the letterS for seen, which symbolize ele-ments such as life, health, beauty, wealth, happiness, enlightenmentand fertility. The table also includesthe Haz, a book lled with poetryand proverbs.

The traditional celebration is fullof dancing, singing, eating, andvisiting. DLIFLC students memo-rized poems and sang in Farsi infront of their classmates as part ofthe festivities.

In a video address to thosecelebrating Nowruz around theworld, President Barack Obamaspoke of the common humanityshared between the United Statesand the people of Iran, and addedhere in the United States, Iranian-Americans prosper and contribute

greatly to our culture. The President ended his ad-dress by emphasizing in the sea-son of new beginnings, the peopleof Iran should know that the UnitedStates of America seeks a futureof deeper connections betweenour people. Luckily, a small partof that is taking place every day inthe halls of DLIFLC.
