Student Design CONTEST
Montie Design
Montie Design is hosting a stu-
dent design contest for Winter
2012. Students who participa-
te are tasked with the mission
of designing a new product for
the Montie Gear line of outdo-
or, camping, shooting, hunting,
and archery products.
Montie Gear products have the
byline of Heirloom Quality -
Tested Troublesome Gap Tou-
gh. These products share the
traits of being extremely highquality, high performance, long
life and very portable. The exi-
sting products are mostly fabri-
cated from flat aluminum shee-
ts with a water jet process and
then powder coated. Many of
the Montie Gear products are
100% American Made. We wo-
uld like to explore the use of
additional materials in this con-
test, including textiles. Especi-
ally materials that we can easi-
ly and sustainably use in the
manufacturing process at our
upcoming Spring Creek, NC
location. Successful products
can then translate into jobs for
the local population of Spring
Creek.
A limited number of students (exactnumber to be determined) will be
accepted for a summer internship in
Spring Creek, NC. During this
internship they will help move their
design to production and also train the
local workforce to manufacture their
product.
Other:
Internship gives student the opportu-
nity to help complete the product and
participate in the product release and
launch.
2 year commission on any productsthat go to market within 2 years of the
submission date (even if they are not
a First or Second Place winner).
2 year period where the designer is
featured in an About the Designer
section on the Montie Gear website in
the product information.

Portable equipment that uses the trunk of trees in your campsite as the central structural support for
kitchen, storage, or camping comfort/productivity aids.
Background: Most people enjoy being outdoors. Many people avoid camping because of the
following pain points.
1) unpredictable weather
2) difficulty getting a good nights sleep without being uncomfortable
3) how much work it is to cook and clean up
4) continual need to organize equipment and supplies at the site
5) difficulty washing hands or body and personal grooming
6) how much work it takes to clean up from and get ready to go camping
Campers (especially on the East coast of the US) often find themselves camping under a canopy of
trees. Lets put those trees to use in a way that makes camping fun and easier.
Develop next generation Montie Gear products that make cooking, washing or equipment storage /
organization easier with a suggested concentration on kitchen / cooking, food prep, storage and
eating areas. Bathing, shower and shelter products are other appropriate areas of focus.
Spring Creek currently has no manufacturing. One goal of this project is to design products that we
can transition into manufacturing jobs for the local population.
`1) Does it compliment the existing Montie Gear product line?
2) Does it use existing trees in the campsite (non-destructively) to provide the main structure
or support?
3) Does it provide work surfaces, storage, oragnization or other creative and needed fuctions
to make camping safer, easier, less work and fun?
4) Bonus points are awarded for providing functionality and ease-of-use that is appropriate for
emergency situation, emergency preparedness or disaster response.
5) Is this product easy to produce with low capital expense and high sustainability in a remote
location in Western North Carolina(Spring Creek, NC - www.visitspringcreek.com)?
