Dear School of Accountancy Alumni and Friends,

Greetings from the University of Missouri! We have had a great year here at Mizzou and I am eager to share with you our accomplishments, activities, and points of pride for the year. We have several milestones to celebrate at the conclusion of this academic year, including:

• 3 new faculty hires

• AACSB reaccreditation

• Highly notable research, teaching, and service accomplishments from our excellent faculty

• Significant expansion of our tax curriculum

• Successful launch of a new study abroad initiative in Chile (and soon, Argentina) for our Master’s students

• Numerous high-profile and meaningful professional development events for our students

• Continued great news on job placements and a tremendous variety of accomplishments from our students.

Our AACSB maintenance of accreditation project was successfully completed this year. We received sev-eral commendations and, needless to say, we will continually strive to maintain our high quality and assur-ance of learning mechanisms. Our faculty accomplishments in research, teaching, and service are detailed in

pages 4-8 – they are truly an impres-sive group and represent the back-bone of our academic prowess. Our new faculty hires are described on page 9 – we welcome them to Mizzou and are very excited by their talents and potential. In fact, with Professor Rachel Wilson’s hiring and addition to the tax faculty (complementing our existing strengths in Professors Bill Moser and Raynolde Pereira), we are planning a significant enhance-ment of our tax curriculum. Other enhancements include a newly initi-ated study abroad program that has been carefully tailored for accoun-tancy students (please see page 34).

The School’s 150-hour and grad-uate programs continue to fly high (please see page 24). These are affirmed in our national rankings and, more importantly, in content dimensions such as student creden-tials, internships/placements, faculty research productivity, and alumni support. In addition to a variety of curricular advances, collaborative learning opportunities and learning-imbued celebrations for our students, faculty, and alumni abound. Many of these are described and pictured in this newsletter:• a keynote address by Senator Chris

Dodd on the Dodd-Frank bill at the Orin Ethics Symposium (page 14)

• a talk by BKD’s former CEO Neal Spencer to our admit class on accounting careers and professional growth (page 25)

• a keynote address to our graduating class by PwC Vice Chair – Clients & Markets (and

Mizzou grad) Greg Garrison (page 26)

• a visit by KPMG Partner in Charge of Audit Quality (and Mizzou grad) Boyd Behnke with our Beta Alpha Psi students (page 20)

• a leadership forum with Grant Thornton CEO Stephen Chipman to focus on globalization and implications for the accounting profession/education (page 30)

• guest lectures by several alumni such as Andy Miller (Ernst & Young), Chris Barbee (PwC), José Gutiérrez (AT&T), and Mike Harreld (Southern Company Services – retired), among others (page 42)

• team-teaching by several alumni such as Scott Picker (Deloitte), Nikki Krawitz (UM system), Dave Myers (Whitlock), Brett Lewis (Grant Thornton), and Jeff Meyer (CBS), among others (page 43)

• a forum on opportunities in fraud examination and forensic accounting by Angela Morelock (BKD) and David Swiney (KPMG) at the Dawdy Speaker Series (page 10).

Our vibrant student organizations (pages 18-22) continue their tradition of linking to the professional com-munity as well. Our employer and donor support is also very impressive. For example, we have several named faculty positions such as those from BKD, CBIZ MHM, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Nikolai, PwC, and Williams Keepers. Combined with student scholarship support from

private donors as well as accounting firms (page 23), they reflect so well on the strong and excellent ties that we at Mizzou have with our alumni, friends, recruiters, and the practitio-ner community. They also underline the importance and enduring value of healthy and thriving public-private partnerships. Our advisory board (page 39) is our gateway to building these enduring relationships and, for that and more, we remain grateful to our Board for their highly construc-tive role in our progress.

At the end of it all, our success is magnified – if not made possible in the first place – by the success of our alumni, who come back to give so generously of their time and support to us, as exemplified by our Daven-port Society initiates and Alumni Citation of Merit recipients (page 44). A cross-section of the experiences, reflections, and motivations underly-ing this cycle of learning and giving is gloriously exemplified by several of our very successful alumni in the section titled “R-E-W-I-N-D: Reminis-cences about Mizzou” (page 46).

In this vein, I request your con-tinued support and also ask that you remain in touch with us. You can do so by filling out the Alumni Update form on page 51 of this newsletter. In addition, you can send us information by e-mail to [email protected]. You can also visit us on the web at accountancy.missouri.edu. Our Face-book page is loaded with event pic-tures, memories, and the energy of There’s only one Mizzou!

Thank you – and, on behalf of our faculty and staff in the School of Accountancy at Mizzou, I wish you all a great 2012-2013. Go Tigers!

Best Regards,

This year Jim accepted an invitation to join the White Collar Crime Research Consortium (WCCRC). The WCCRC is a division of the National White Collar Crime Center whose mission is to promote increased public aware-ness of the impact and burden of white collar crime on society through dedicated research. It is intended to align with the School of Accountancy’s courses in forensic accounting and fraud examination – and is designed to augment the classroom experience by creating an opportunity for

accountancy students and faculty members to collaborate with professionals and alumni. In conjunction with the speaker series, the School of Accountancy has also established a student chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), providing additional professional development and networking opportunities. Jay was recently honored by the ACFE (at its high profile annual conference) for his educational efforts in the area of fraud examination.

MU accountancy alumnus Richard M. Orin (BSBA ‘49), has established the Orin Ethics Sympo-sium in the Tru-

laske College of Business. Mr. Orin is an attorney and CPA in New York. He earned a BSBA in 1949 from MU and was elected into Beta Gamma Sigma business honor fraternity and Alpha Pi Zeta. While at MU, he was also a member of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. He earned two degrees from New York University: a JD in 1955 and an LLM in taxation in 1957. Mr. Orin is a founding

member and former president of the American Association of Attorney-Certified Public Accountants. He was a 1988 DR Scott Memorial Lec-turer and is the author of Professional Ethics published by the Foundation of Accounting Education. Mr. Orin served in the US Navy in World War II and in the US Army in the Korean con-flict. He is the recipient of the Meritori-ous Service Award presented by the US Selective Service System. He resides in New York and has two children and six grandchildren. He is a member of the College’s Herbert J. Davenport Society.

The Orin Ethics Symposium series is designed to increase awareness and understanding of ethics issues in

business and accountancy. Past speak-ers have included former US Sena-tor Paul Sarbanes (2009) and Madoff whistleblower Harry Markopolos (2010). For 2011, our featured speaker was former US Senator Chris Dodd, as detailed in the announcement above. The event was very well attended and Sen. Dodd provided a very informative overview of the environment, goals, and processes underlying the Dodd-Frank legislation. Several areas were examined further during the Q&A ses-sion moderated by Dean Joan Gabel and Director Vairam Arunachalam. Snapshots from the symposium, cap-turing different components of the event, follow.

Association of Accountancy Students (AAS)

The Association of Accountancy Stu-dents (AAS) is a professional organi-zation open to both current and pro-spective accounting majors of any class level. The goal of AAS is to offer innovative meetings that broaden students’ knowledge about the ben-efits of a career in accounting, pro-mote communication within the School of Accountancy, and improve understanding of business etiquette and practices. By bringing in dif-ferent companies to give presenta-tions, it provides members an excel-lent chance to begin networking with potential employers for intern-ships and full time jobs. This year we have increased our community ser-vice around the Columbia area. We cooked meals for the Ronald McDon-ald House and partnered with Beta Alpha Psi to participate in the chili cook-off for the Boys and Girls Club. Association of Accountancy Students is a great way to get involved in not only the business school but the com-munity as well. The following execu-tive board committee leads AAS for the spring semester of 2012:

During the Spring and Fall semes-ters, the Association of Accountancy Students offers an assortment of innovative and informative meetings from a range of firms. The programs consist of a wide variety of topics ranging from interview and resume help, forensic accounting to financial advisors and auditing clients. This past spring we were fortunate enough to have PwC, KPMG, Ernst & Young, Boeing, and other companies present at our meetings to share their insights regarding what to expect of the Accountancy program, internships, and the early years in the account-ing field.

Email Anna Williams at [email protected] with any questions or comments you may have. For more informa-tion, please visit the Association of Accountancy Students website at business.missouri.edu/aas/.

Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE)The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) is an international professional organization dedicated to fighting fraud and providing fraud prevention training and education. Both student and professional chap-ters exist and provide opportunities for networking amongst those inter-ested in preventing and prosecuting fraud. The ACFE focuses primarily on white collar crime, including embez-zlement and financial misstatements.

The MU ACFE student chapter has enjoyed its third full year of exis-tence at the University of Missouri. The chapter has assisted in hosting visits from David Kotz, the Inspector General of the SEC and Jeff Meyer, the Vice President of Internal Audit for CBS. Professionals devoted to fraud prevention in Big 4 accounting firms, the FBI, and specialty forensic firms spoke at monthly chapter meetings; providing opportunities for students to discover the anti-fraud field as well as network with professionals in the field. These connections have led to internships, job shadowing oppor-tunities, and scholarships. In the fall of 2011, MU ACFE finished in the Top Ten of the National AICPA Fraud and Forensic Accounting Competition. For more information, visit our Web-site at acfe.missouri.edu.

At Mizzou, member-ship to Beta Alpha Psi is an honor exclusively for GPA qualifying ac-countancy students admitted to the 150-Hour Accountancy Program. Throughout the year, Beta Alpha Psi holds meetings with accounting firms and other professional organizations. This year we held meetings with all of the Big 4 accounting firms as well as Williams-Keepers LLC, Rubin Brown, CBIZ, and Grant Thornton. Besides attending meetings with profession-als, we also participate in community service projects. Members of Beta Alpha Psi volunteer their time for the Central Missouri Food Bank, Adopt-a-Highway, Ronald McDonald House,

Grannie’s House, and Marine Parents. Members also assist the Trulaske College of Business by proctoring accounting exams and participating in Clean-up Cornell. This year the group participated in Business Week for the first time. This event includes service day, competition games, Di-versity Day, and many opportunities to raise money for the B-week benefi-ciaries. The group was very excited for the opportunity to participate and become more involved in the Tru-laske College of Business. National Association of Black Accountants (NABA)The mission of NABA is to address the professional needs of its members and to build leaders that shape the future of the accounting and finance profession with an unfaltering com-mitment to inspire the same in their successors.

The University of Missouri (MU) NABA Student Chapter sponsors several key programs and services designed to address the needs of all students majoring in the fields of accounting and finance. This past school year, MU NABA welcomed Deloitte, Ernst & Young, PwC, KPMG, McGladrey, and Edward Jones to our campus in hopes of learning and understanding more about the accounting and finance industry.

To promote and develop profes-sional skills as well as present under-classmen with several opportunities

in the accounting and finance world, MU NABA hosted its first annual “Know Your Options” series. The stu-dents benefited greatly from learning about potential interviews, intern-ships, and scholarship opportunities.

Throughout the year, MU NABA hosted Accounting 2036 & 2037 Exam Review Sessions; participated in Clubbin’ Night at TCOB and Fall Fest on the MU Campus during Septem-ber 2011; attended the annual NABA Central Region Conference in Dayton, OH during October 2011; organized community service events at the Her-itage Festival and several other events in the Columbia community; and participated in several other commu-nity service events such as Cornell Cares and Tiger Night of Fun.

As Director of the 150-Hour and Master of Accountancy Pro-grams, I am proud to be associated with such an outstanding program at the Uni-versity of Missouri.

The faculty provides our students with a top-notch education and our students are amongst the brightest at MU. Our program continues to be ranked nationally as a top program in both our undergraduate and graduate programs as well as nationally ranked in our pass rate on the CPA exam.

The number of students interested in accounting still remains strong. Students realize the value and ver-satility of an accounting degree. The number of upper level applications increased slightly this year; however, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission due to limited faculty resources. Our pro-gram has been in competitive admis-sion for approximately six years. The average GPA of our FS2012 Admit Class was above a 3.7. We admit approximately 140 students per year. To assist the students, the School of Accountancy awarded approximately 150 students with over $140,000 in scholarships this past year – many of these were GPA-based scholarships.

Our job placements continue to remain high every year. For 2011-2012, ninety-one percent of our grad-uates began work in public account-ing. Approximately seventy percent of students have an opportunity to do either a spring, summer, or fall internship for credit. These intern-ships normally result in full-time

employment. They not only do intern-ships and get permanent employment here in Missouri but also in cities outside of Missouri such as New York City, Chicago, Dallas, San Diego, Phil-adelphia, Los Angeles, Denver, Wash-ington, D.C., and Peoria. About eighty percent of our students locate in St. Louis or Kansas City.

The school is continually looking at new programs and ways to improve the education and success of our stu-dents. With the hiring of an Assistant Director of the 150-Hour Accoun-tancy Program, Lauren Milbach, the study abroad class was offered again and a group of 17 graduate students went to Santiago, Chile in December for an educational field trip. Begin-ning in the fall, we are expanding our tax curriculum for those students wishing to get a tax certificate. There will be new courses offered in part-nership, state, local and international tax.

The school has given our students amazing educational experiences outside the classroom by bringing in very high profile speakers for the Orin Ethics Symposium and the Dawdy Speaker Series. Several alumni also participate in our workshops and spe-cial events. Alumni assisted with the Career Options Workshop in Novem-ber. The panel included Christo-pher Briggs, assurance partner, PWC; Jeff Comotto, Vice-President, Taxes, for Anheuser-Busch In Bev World-wide and Anheuser-Busch Compa-nies; Kathy Graessle, Williams-Keep-ers Member Owner; Michael Powell, Audit Partner with KPMG; and Mike Weiss, Executive Director of Advi-sory Services, Ernst & Young. All

participants are alumni of our school except Michael Powell. In addition, the new admit class attends an Admit Workshop and Orientation Banquet in the fall. These events provide new admits with curriculum information and expectations of our program as well as opportunities to network with the firms. Neal Spencer, CEO of BKD, was the keynote speaker for our Ori-entation Banquet in September. Greg Garrison, an alumni and Vice-Chair of Clients and Markets with PwC in New York, gave our graduates an inspiring speech about the “recipe for success” at the May 2012 Graduation Banquet.

The school appreciates the sup-port of our alumni, the Accountancy Advisory Board, and the firms. We always welcome their participation in our workshops and assistance with internships and permanent employ-ment. The School of Accountancy now has a Facebook and LinkedIn page so everyone can stay connected to our school. Check out Facebook at facebook.com/MizzouAccountancy. The University of Missouri School of Accountancy group is an online community aimed at networking the current students & alumni of Miz-zou’s School of Accountancy with each other and with employers. To find us on LinkedIn, search for the group “University of Missouri School of Accountancy” and request to join. I am looking forward to another great year for our program and our stu-dents as well as welcoming the new FS2012 Admit Class to the School of Accountancy.

An understanding of International Accounting fundamentals and cur-rent issues is in high demand these days. Even small, local companies with no physical presence overseas can engage in international activi-ties, as products are often purchased from overseas manufacturers and/or sold to overseas customers. These companies, as well as large multina-tional organizations, are seeking out professional expertise in the areas of

accounting services, compliance, tax regulation, and International Finan-cial Reporting Standards (IFRS). In late fall 2011, we began offering a combination classroom/global expe-rience in an effort to give our students an edge in understanding the com-plexities and challenges of today’s global environment from an account-ing perspective.

The course began with six weeks of intense classroom coverage in Cornell

Hall, followed by a trip to Santiago, Chile from December 16 to Decem-ber 24. In class, we covered topics such as the reasons for accounting diversity worldwide, comparative accounting practices across cul-tures, international financial report-ing convergence, explicit coverage of IFRS, foreign currency transactions and hedging, international taxa-tion, international transfer pricing, and strategic management issues in

multinational corporations. Students were also tasked with researching and presenting on various cultural and historical facets of Chile and the various companies and organizations we would be visiting on our trip.

“Why Chile?” you ask. The econ-omy in South America happens to be growing amidst most of the world’s economic contraction. Chile plays a significant factor in that growth, as exports have increased due to Free

Trade Agreements, increases in com-modity prices have fueled economic growth (Copper mining accounts for approximately 10% of Chile’s GDP), and the 2011 country-wide adoption of IFRS has stimulated foreign direct investment in the country’s assets. The country was “ripe for the pick-ing,” in our minds.

The trip, itself, was a whirlwind of educational and cultural discov-ery. From the first day, students were

completely immersed in a new cul-ture, where it is rare to find an Eng-lish-speaking person, much less a map or menu in English. Roughly 3 hours after landing in Chile, the stu-dents were sent on a city “scavenger hunt,” where they were encouraged to use the metro system, try new foods, visit museums and monuments, and soak in as much of the city as pos-sible. The second day was Sunday,

and the students travelled to a ranch in the Andes Mountains for a day of whitewater rafting, horseback rid-ing, zip-lining, swimming, and relax-ation. The rest was much needed; over the next four business days we went on ten professional site visits!

The professional visits consisted of a variety of companies and organiza-tions, designed to give the students and in depth understanding of the

Chilean economy, the major players in, and the process of, importing and exporting, and a first-hand look at what some of the challenges can be in today’s global marketplace.

We visited the Chilean equiva-lent of the SEC and the AICPA, Banco Santander, the 8th largest bank in the world, PricewaterhouseCoopers, a university, the principal port of Chile, the outsourced U.S. back-office

operations of Experian, a non-profit organization that is aiming to stimu-late the impoverished community, and a boutique winery with global export operations.

All parts of the international busi-ness and accounting spectrum were discussed: the challenges of convert-ing to and adopting IFRS as a country, elevating the cultural status of the accounting profession and improving

educational routes for those seek-ing to be accountants, learning what it’s like to be an expatriate working for one of the Big 4 in Chile, the dan-gers of being economically depen-dent on commodities such as copper, the challenges of working for man-agement based in another country, seeing the shipping vessels actu-ally being loaded and unloaded, and understanding the unique complexi-ties of dealing with U.S. import regu-lations. The students were encour-aged to ask questions and engage in discussion with our speakers, all of which were high-level managers or executives with a wealth of knowl-edge and experience to share.

Though the focus of the trip was academic, students engaged in cul-tural activities as well. Ample free-time was provided for exploring the city of Santiago and trying new foods. The daytrip to the coastal town of Valparaiso included a free after-noon for some much-needed “sun and sand” relaxation, and the visit

to the winery was topped off with a private tour and tasting and farewell banquet.

The School of Accountancy is currently planning next year’s trip, which will include both Chile and Argentina in January 2013.

Over the past several years as direc-tor, I have had the honor and privi-lege of meeting and connecting with many Mizzou alumni. As I reflect on my meetings, I have a strong desire to share some of our alumni’s remi-niscences. To continue last year’s feature, I thought I’d share with you some “Mizzou memories” from sev-eral of our highly accomplished and dedicated alumni. The following four areas were highlighted in their reminiscences: (1) salient memories from Mizzou; (2) most valuable benefit(s) from the Mizzou experience; (3) memories of Professor Joseph A. Silvoso, a former director of the School of Accountancy; and, (4) words of wisdom/inspiration for our students.

The alumni that I interviewed for this newsletter issue were:

• Jerry Carlson (Managing Partner – St. Louis, KPMG, LLP)

• Mark Feldman (Retired Partner – BKD, LLP)

• Greg Garrison (VP-Clients & Markets, PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP)

• José Gutiérrez (President & CEO, AT&T Advertising Solutions)

• Dave Johnson (CEO, Maxus Properties)

• Nikki Krawitz (UM – VP Finance & Administration)

• Scott Picker (Tax Partner, Deloitte)

• Bob Robuck (Chairman, Central Bancompany)

• Russ Starr (Managing Member, Williams Keepers LLC)

• Marilyn Tromans (CFO, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City)

Jerry CarlsonBS BA 1980, MA 1981Managing Partner, KPMG LLP, St. Louis

I often reflect on the life guidance provided to us as students by Pro-fessor Kvam – he never missed the opportunity to share with us with a big smile “You know, accountants think alike. Therefore, accountants should marry accountants.” Obvi-ously, I followed his advice and found a beautiful young accountant who would tolerate me and has for 27 years.

The biggest benefit I had was the broad-based foundation of under-standing I developed with respect to the field of business. I think the challenges to “think outside the box” and to consider all of the alterna-tives have helped me to succeed in the business world and to know that I have to always think on my feet.

At the time I was entering the School of Accountancy, Professor Silvoso was in the late stages of his career. I had the benefit of him pro-viding guest lectures in our classes and it was evident in those lectures why the professors and TAs always treated Dr. Silvoso with such rever-ence – his knowledge and the pas-sion he had towards accounting and its place in the world of finance was clearly evident.

I have told many a student and employee that it takes all four legs of the stool to succeed: interper-sonal skills – to be able to inter-act with people, on our teams, at our clients and in the community; work ethic – you have to be willing to work hard to differentiate yourself (there is no cumulative GPA or ACT score once you leave school); intel-lectual curiosity – because you must never stop learning and must know what is going on in the world around you; and, ethics and integrity – you

must always ensure you “do the right thing”, irrespective of whether it is the popular thing to do with all or some of the people around you. If they stay focused on these four and always treat individuals with the utmost respect they will be happy with themselves and the results they achieve.

Mark FeldmanBS BA 1973Retired Managing Partner, BKD LLP, St. Louis

I have several memories from Miz-zou. Here are a select few:

I vividly remember a Profes-sor-for-a-Day who spoke to a basic accounting class I was taking. He was a CPA firm partner who was genu-inely enthusiastic about the public accounting profession as he talked about the clients he served, continual new experiences and learning oppor-tunities, and advancement based on personal performance and efforts.

The experience I got from part-time jobs I had in Columbia while working my way through school-washing dishes in Hatch Hall, Suzanne’s (women’s ready-to-wear shops), McDonalds (part of the crew that opened the then new facility on Stadium Blvd), and UPS (I still have my teamster withdrawal card, in case accounting didn’t work out).

I enjoyed the interaction and meeting people from different parts of the State of Missouri, other states and other countries.

I really enjoyed the handball courts outside the old Brewer Field House. It was a great place to get a workout and make new friends.

The Mizzou experience including course work, part-time jobs, cam-pus life and interaction with a diverse group of people at various levels helped me formulate the outline of what I wanted in a professional career

and gave me some insight into what it would take to be successful. I have also found the Mizzou “network” of professionals in the state of Missouri as well as around the country to be very beneficial.

Dr. Silvoso taught the summer audit class I took and we used the text book he had written. I remember him as a warm, caring man who had plenty of stories to make the course material interesting and very real.

My main suggestions/advice for students would be the following:• Given the electronic, technical

world we live in, remember that personal interaction with people is still vital to your future success.

• Consider industry specialization early on—it narrows the technical information you’re required to master, defines where to spend your marketing time and provides a platform for you to become a recognized expert in your field.

Greg GarrisonBS BA 1976Vice Chairman – Clients & Markets, Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLP

The Mizzou years went by too fast, but the impressions they left stay with me to this day. If I had to describe my time at Mizzou with a phrase, it would probably be “work hard, play hard,” and I did my best to do both! My business and accounting classes were certainly challenging, and so was getting up for those 7:40 am classes. There were great times with good friends at Faurot Field, Harpos, the ATO House and, believe it or not, at the MU Library! There’s no question that my time at Mizzou was a period of tremendous growth for me – at the same time, however, I’m grateful that we didn’t have camera phones back then!

Mizzou provided me a world class education and the opportunity to team with other students in vari-ous organizations. This combina-tion of academic and personal growth

prepared me well for my career with PwC. Looking back, I know full well that my Mizzou experience enabled me to compete effectively with gradu-ates from any university in the coun-try. My single biggest takeaway from the Mizzou years was that if you are willing to work hard enough you can accomplish any goal.

My advice to current Mizzou stu-dents is framed by my own expe-rience. In short: Work hard… play hard… get involved! If you follow the above program, Mizzou will provide you the same benefits and memories that I received. Go TIGERS!

José GutiérrezBS ACC 1984, M ACC 1985President & CEO, AT&T Advertising Solutions

What comes to mind most often when I think of Mizzou is the many people who showed so much care and inter-est for me: from Grace Butler, to Dr. Dockweiler and the other faculty, to the men and women at the Interna-tional Student Office, not to mention the administrative staff like Mary. Everyone, in their own way, showed patience, care, empathy and encour-agement along the way.

As a foreign student, Mizzou per-sonified America for me. As such, I learned at Mizzou that in this coun-try, there are plenty of opportunities and plenty of people willing to lend a hand, as long as one is willing to work hard and keep his/her nose clean. I am proud now to be an American citi-zen and proud to be a Mizzou Tiger.

I had many wonderful professors at MU! Dr. Silvoso was one of them. He reminded us a million times that our reputation – personal and profes-sional – was our most valuable asset and that we should never compro-mise it. He told us that a million times and his words still resonate with me.

Here are some free tips:• Stay positive. Optimism is a choice

and a powerful enabler of success.

• Your and your family’s health

matters most. Cherish it at all times.

• Your personal and professional reputation is your most valuable asset. Do not compromise it (“borrowed” from dear Dr. Silvoso).

• Keep smiling. If you have your optimism, good health, family love and sound reputation, you are in great shape and have all reasons to smile.

Dave JohnsonBS BA 1978CEO, Maxus Properties Incorporated

I have such fond memories of my four years at Mizzou that to list just one would not seem fair.

Mizzou gave me a skill set to com-pete with any other school’s gradu-ates, be they Ivy League or other local schools.

I had several advisor sessions with Dr. Silvoso. Spelling was never my strength but I do remember how disappointed Dr. Silvoso was when, on my proposed class schedule that he reviewed, I misspelled Financial Accounting as Financal. All he said was “You should know Financial has an I in it.” Pretty sure he did not want a MU graduate making this mis-take for any employer after they left Columbia!!!

Get prepared to give back to MU as soon as you leave. We must all make sure this remains a special place for all generations.

Natalie (Nikki) KrawitzMS 1982Vice President for Finance and Administration University of Missouri System

I was in the Master’s degree pro-gram for students who had no back-ground in business or accounting. All of the professors were very sup-portive of students in this program who as I remember were mostly non-traditional aged students who were looking to change careers. Dr. Zieha was the head of the program at that time and he was very welcoming and encouraging.

The biggest benefit was the wide variety of opportunities that were available to me while I was enrolled in the program and after I graduated. As a student, I worked with Dr. Parker on his tax book, and I had the oppor-tunity to teach the first two account-ing courses, 36 and 37. After I gradu-ated, I worked with Dr. Nikolai for over 20 years as one of the authors on the Intermediate Accounting work-book and for several years served as a guest lecturer on ethics in account-ing for the senior capstone class that he taught.

My interactions with Professor Sil-voso were very limited. I just remem-ber his reputation as being bigger than life!

My advice would be to take advan-tage of the many opportunities that are available to students to grow, develop and learn outside of the classroom. You never know where life will take you and experience is cumulative. Develop mentoring rela-tionships with faculty who can open doors and lead you in directions you never envisioned.

Scott PickerBS BA 1981Partner, Deloitte LLP

As far as classes and professors, I would have to say Economics 51 with Walter Johnson and Intermedi-ate Accounting with Loren Nikolai come to mind immediately as having a lasting impression on me – mainly because they were demanding and interesting in both content and pre-sentation style. My fondest memories of my college experience would have to be the lasting friendships I made at MIZZOU mainly through my social fraternity, attending football and bas-ketball games (yes, we had competi-tive teams when I was a student) and certain eating and drinking estab-lishments such as The Heidelberg, The Shack, Ernie’s and Harpos.

The biggest benefits from Miz-zou were: the quality education in a college town atmosphere and the outstanding accountancy program. Being away from home at age 18 forces young people to make deci-sions on how to prioritize their time and solve problems. Also, the oppor-tunities to become involved in cam-pus and community organizations are important to developing a net-work of connections and helping build relationships.

Unfortunately, I did not have any real interactions with Professor Sil-voso, but I was aware of his signifi-cant contributions to the accounting profession and the University of Mis-souri. Here is my advice:• Become involved in campus

organizations. I applied and was accepted into an organization called The Mizzou Student Foundation early in my college career. MSF is a charitable organization at the University and I remember helping plan a spring bike race. This experience enabled me to become involved with students and faculty and university leadership.

• Give back. Always remember the opportunities you had by attending the University of Missouri so that future students will have the same opportunities you had when attending Mizzou.

• Be prepared for what comes next. Understand what is going on in the placement office and how things work there. Before an interview, do your homework. There is a vast amount of information about prospective employers on the internet. Take advantage of it. Be prepared with deep knowledge of the prospective employer’s business and prepare 2-3 perceptive questions to ask.

Bob RobuckBS BA 1964Chairman, Central Bancompany

I had Dr. Kvam as an Advanced Accounting course instructor and for CPA Problems. Not only did he teach us about accounting and being a CPA, he also taught us about how to be a good person, to be ethical and be a caring person. I remember Dr. Kvam tried to motivate us and encourage us by talking about previous students who had taken the CPA Exam and had passed all of it in one setting. He would talk about how intelligent the person was and how good of a student they were. I remember one fellow classmate, Hank Watts, who took the CPA exam in Kansas when he was a Junior and passed all parts. Dr. Kvam spoke favorably of him on several occasions and probably continued to do so even after we had graduated.

The biggest benefit to me for attending MU was the opportunity to learn about subjects I knew very little about before I attended MU. Examples are Accounting, Corporate Finance, Economics, Auditing, Law and other disciplines like Humani-ties, English Literature and Fine Arts. Attending MU broadened my horizon

immensely and prepared me for a rewarding career in the business world.

Dr. Silvoso taught the Auditing class I attended. I remember how well versed he was in the subject and how he made it interesting with the expe-riences he had practicing as a CPA. He was very intelligent and had a real interest in seeing that his students learned all he had learned and expe-rienced as an auditor. He had a very practical approach while at the same time making sure we learned the the-ory. When I started working in pub-lic accounting, I was able to quickly apply concepts I had learned in Dr. Silvoso’s Auditing course.

I would tell students to study hard, make the most of their college years to learn about a lot of subjects that will broaden their knowledge and to learn as much as they can about a focused curriculum that will enable them to have a good and rewarding career and life. The sacrifice, hard work and commitment they make to learning while in college will pay big dividends in the future. Don’t be light hearted about it and don’t waste this opportunity to get prepared for the remainder of your life. Take time to have a little fun while in college, but use the most of those four to six years preparing for the future, a great future.

My fondest memories of Mizzou include classes in the old B&PA build-ing, basketball games in Brewer Fieldhouse, and football games at Memorial Stadium. My favorite pro-fessors, out of the many outstanding ones I had, were Joe Silvoso for audit-ing, Ray Dockweiler for Intermediate Accounting, Hank Kuelman for Econ 51, and Walter Johnson for Money and Banking. Those professors loved to teach and brought out the best in the students they interacted with.

I feel I got the best higher educa-tion possible to me by attending Miz-zou. I came away from Mizzou with the confidence that I could compete at a high level in Public Accounting, convinced that Mizzou had prepared me well for the professional chal-lenges ahead. I have very positive long lasting memories of faculty, staff and peer students at Mizzou, and particu-larly from the School of Accountancy.

I took my one and only auditing course from Joe Silvoso, and we also used his text book for the class. He was an excellent teacher, and was very interested in providing the very best education for his students. Joe was also very dedicated as a professor and had a unique sense of his place in the profession.

My advice would be to work hard on academics while at Mizzou because they provide a unique oppor-tunity to mix it up daily with some of the best faculty and students in the country – but also to take time to enjoy the total experience that Miz-zou offers. Get to know as many of the professors and staff in the SOA as possible, as well of forming life-long bonds of shared experiences with fel-low students. Take some challenges that put yourself outside your com-fort zone while at Mizzou, as the time spent at Mizzou will be unlike any other period of time in your life.

I have very fond memories of the School of Accountancy. The accoun-tancy program was not too large – and a fairly small group of students went through the junior and senior accountancy classes together (pre five-year program.) So the students and the professors came to know each other very well. I can still see Dr. Dockweiler, who taught the inter-mediate accountancy class, carry-ing his overhead projector down the hall to class (quaint now!). He was an excellent teacher and the course was a tough one that separated who was going to make it in the accountancy program from those who would not.

I grew up in a small town, and Mizzou gave me an idea of what life could be. The exposure to differ-ent ideas and people, along with an outstanding accountancy program, started me out in a career that I have enjoyed very much.

Dr. Silvoso was Director of the School of Accountancy while I was at Mizzou. He also taught the required auditing course – and wrote the text-book that was used. He was a very personable man and took an inter-est in the students. I can recall him walking around the Auditing course classroom during a quiz, looking over students’ shoulders (including mine), and giving some indication through body language or clearing of throat, whether one should reconsider the answer!

Take advantage of all that Mizzou offers you while you are there. Learn-ing does not stop when you leave Columbia. And most of all, be true to yourself.
