The town and its surrounds are home to some of Australia’s most unique landscapes. Through Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa, Indigenous communities are using innovative land management programs to care for Newman’s beautiful country.

Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa, also known as KJ, is a Martu-governed organisation established to build strong, sustainable communities in a manner that is Martu-focused and recognises and reinforces Martu values.

Established in 2009, the KJ land management programs have continued to develop and expand. The highly successful Ranger program began with an initial six Martu rangers in Jigalong and now has over 100 local people engaged on a full-time, part-time or casual basis in three communities.

The land programs provide social, cultural and economic benefits for Martu people and build capacity in both traditional cultural knowledge and Western science. The teams work on country conducting traditional mosaic burning through on-ground burns, and aerial burning from helicopters and fixed-wing planes. They also install infrastructure along the Canning Stock Route, undertake permit checking, manage visitors to the area, look after cultural sites and assist in the management of feral animals.

Two priority areas for the Jigalong ranger team are Jilakurru (Durba Hills) and Kaalpi (Calvert Range). A two-year project supported by BHP Billiton Iron Ore focuses on visitor management, establishment of a rock wallaby colony, fire and feral management as well as developing a healthy country plan for these areas.

The Caring for our Country Program has also expanded with over 125 Martu now employed on a casual basis across three communities. Teams are predominately composed of women whose work includes conducting fauna and water monitoring, burning, and recording and management of cultural sites.

For more information on KJ’s programs or to get involved call their Newman office on 9175 9700.

Martumili artist Bugai Whylouter was among those selected for the 29th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA) held in Darwin in August.

NATSIAA was established in 1984 and aims to promote appreciation and understanding of the quality and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art from regional and urban-based Indigenous artists throughout Australia. The Award is an important showcase for both established and emerging Indigenous artists from all parts of the country. This year, 63 works were selected from around 300 entries and a major prize of $40,000 awarded to the most outstanding work in the exhibition.

Martumili submitted a number of artworks to the Awards Committee for consideration, with Bugai Whylouter’s work selected to be shown amongst the fabulous pieces by top artists around the country - a fantastic achievement!

Art is very important to Martu communities as it keeps their culture strong through the telling of stories and the sharing of knowledge across generations.

Martumili provides spaces and programs for Martu art to thrive, and engages artists from communities across the deserts of the East Pilbara. The art centre in Newman is Martu-governed and is hosted by the Shire of East Pilbara, with generous support from principal sponsor BHP Billiton Iron Ore.

As part of the Festival weekend, the Newman Jet Boat Sprint Club held its annual racing event on Saturday 18 August.

Newman has its very own jet boat sprint course - one of only two operational tracks in WA. The sport is based on time trials, where the fastest boat around the course wins: drivers can feel up to a 5 G-force throughout the race and reach speeds of up to 160km/h!

Each year, the Newman Jet Boat Sprint Club holds a race day, with the high speed sport providing an exhilarating day for racers and spectators alike. This year’s event was a great success

with over 750 people coming along to watch and support top Western Australia drivers.

Sponsors of the races were treated to a celebrity ‘hot lap’ in acknowledgment of their contributions to the event.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Superintendent Community & Indigenous Affairs, Megan Alchin, was one of the lucky ones who was able to experience the thrill of high speeds first-hand.

“It was so scary, but it was amazing!” she said.

Newman Jet Boat Sprint Club always welcomes new members and supporters. To find out more, contact club President, Dwayne Ehrenreich on 0438 740 793.

Spectator’s at the Newman Jet Boat Sprint Club’s annual racing event witnessed dizzying speeds of up to 160km/hour!

The inaugural ‘hang tough, don’t puff’ Newman Skate Competition 2012 (NSC’12) to be held from 11-14 October is hoping to attract youth from the town and surrounding communities to four days of exhilarating workshops and events.

The Shire of East Pilbara Newman Youth Centre, Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS), Joblink and YMCA Mobile Youth Service are the driving forces in delivering the event for the many youth who use the town’s skate park.

With the NSC’12 being held towards the end of the October school holidays, event organisers are hoping to attract good numbers who are in town or returning from breaks and other sports camps that are run during that period.

During the four day event there will be a mechanical bull and dunk tank, skate activities and a rock-climbing wall for those who aren’t afraid of heights!

Skateboarding Australia will be involved in coaching for budding skaters; workshops with urban art and hip-hop artists will bring a creative side to the event.

With the skate park being a favourite public space by Newman’s youth, this should be an exciting event that organizers hope to grow in the coming years

For more information on the event contact Matt at the YMCA on 9175 5508.

APRIL ----2012----newviewTHE

Now in its eighth year, the much loved Bloodyslow Cup (think the Bledisloe Cup!) is a jam-packed weekend of events not to be missed.

This annual occasion commemorates the service of four police officers who tragically lost their lives in the Polair 64 air crash on Australia Day in 2001.

A Remembrance Ceremony and a range of sports and community events makes for a special weekend so make sure you mark Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October in your calendar.

The 2012 line-up includes a family concert featuring the WA Police Pipe Band, a three-day enduro motorcross race, a golf day and a ladies fashion show. There is also rugby, netball, cricket, lawn bowls and touch rugby, with a mix of mens’, womens’, juniors’, seniors’ and golden oldies’ matches.

Money raised over the weekend supports Police Legacy, the charity that assists families of deceased police officers.

The biggest highlight of the weekend is always the Australia versus New Zealand rugby match.

Emirates Western Force scrumhalf Brett Sheehan, who travelled to Newman for the match last year, gives an insight into what spectators at this year’s game should expect.

“The crowd was treated to some exciting running rugby, some brutal hits and some spectacular solo tries,” he said.

“The match capped off a sensational weekend for Police Legacy. Perhaps the most special thing is how the whole community of Newman comes together to support this wonderful event and to never forget the lost souls.”

This year the Aussies will be hoping to snatch a win from the Kiwis, who have taken out the Cup six times.

The Newman Lion’s Club Animal Park has been operating for over 30 years. With a variety of animals to meet, it’s a fantastic fun place to take the kids.

The park is a great space for children to interact with animals and for families to spend time together.

Kids can see chickens, sheep and goats, including five female kids (that is – baby goats!) that were born in August, and more kids on the way!

Visitors can also meet an emu, geese, peacocks and a few kangaroos.

“We have a playground for kids, and a lot of families use this every day of the week. People have picnics and birthday parties with their families here,” said Lion’s Club Secretary, Jessica Middleton.

A feeding roster for the animals is shared among Lions Club members, with non-members also helping out. The park is also supported by organisations that contribute food donations to fatten up the friendly animals.

On Friday 4 August, the Newman community were treated to an exciting Celebrity Vets AFL match at the Capricorn Oval.

The game involved teams with a mix of celebrities, local Newman Vets Football League players and community stakeholders, providing a throroughly entertaining footy match for spectators.

A Sportsman evening event followed, giving community members a chance to meet and mingle with the stars while raising money for the Newman Vets Football League.

Celebrities included Ernie Dingo, Chris Lewis, Wally Matera, Brad Hogg, Matthew Carr, Troy Ugle and Tom Bottrell. BHP Billiton Iron Ore staff also showed off their skills with Adrian Brahim, Superintendent Community & Indigenous Affairs, and Alex Seed,

The Celebrity Vets football game and Sportsman event were proudly supported by V Swans in partnership with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Newman Vets Football League, Newman National Football League and Swan Districts Football Club.

The Celebrity AFL match is just one of the many fantastic sporting and community events being held in Newman at the recently upgraded Capricorn Complex. Look out for future news on how BHP Billiton Iron Ore has helped light up Newman’s ovals.

Ferdo Stojic – known to many as ‘Fred’ – migrated to Australia in 1966. Three years later he saw a job advertised in the newspaper that led him to the Pilbara. By sharing his Croatian heritage through community groups, Fred became an integral member of multicultural Newman.

The job that Fred applied for was with Mount Newman Mining Company, now BHP Billiton Iron Ore. When he arrived in 1969, the town had a population of only 350 people. A lot has changed since then. “Now there are close to 10,000 people including FIFO workers, and it is constantly growing. There is new technology and bigger machinery on the mine”, said Fred.

Fred is an electric shovel operator, driving front-end loaders, and with nearly 43 years service, is the longest-standing BHP Billiton Iron Ore employee in Newman.

Fred is well-known for growing local community groups and is a life member of both the Pistol Club and the Newman Darts Association. He’s the president of the Croatian Social Association, involved in helping new starters in town, organizing meetings and corresponding with people around the world. Fred has been a key contributor to building a thriving social and cultural spirit within Newman.

On holiday in Perth in 1988, Fred met his wife-to-be, Danica and her two daughters Dragana and Antonela. The births of Fred and Danika’s daughters, Rosana and Vanesa, in Newman hospital, are cherished memories of living in the town. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren Harry, Claudia and Lily play sports on Boomerang Oval among the gum trees that he planted in the 1970’s.

Summing up about living in Newman, Fred says, “I love the climate - it’s similar to where I was born in Croatia, dry and hot. Shops and friends’ houses are within walking distance and it takes only a few minutes to drive to work. It makes life very easy.”
