ReflectionsWhen I reflect on the nine years I have been a part of the IWU community, I am once again amazed at God’s faithfulness. I see a community that has expanded its outreach in innovative ways while remaining grounded in its Christian mission. I see graduates who are committed to impacting the world for Christ, leaving their mark that brings glory to God. I see The Wesleyan Church and IWU supporters providing guidance, encouragement and opening doors to further ministry. The future is bright and I am so blessed to have had a hand in its shaping.

In October, as many of you know, I announced my decision to retire as President of Indiana Wesleyan University. After much prayer and contemplation, the Lord has granted me assurance that the time is right for my work on behalf of IWU to look different.

Following a sabbatical this spring, which was a wonderful gift afforded to me by the Board of Trustees, I will serve as chancellor until December 31, 2015. This new role will be defined during my sabbatical, but the anticipation is that it will include a significant focus on international Wesleyan higher education. I am excited about serving in the three areas this focus will encompass – international engagement, Wesleyan Church work and higher education promotion.

I encourage you as you read the information contained in the 2012 President’s Report to celebrate all that has been accomplished in God’s honor, partner with us to continue to identify students and donors who will enhance our community by their presence and partnership, and pray for the presidential transition. God is working at IWU and God is faithful.

With gratitude,

Financial and Enrollment ReportsIn the midst of ongoing economic

challenges, the IWU community

is working diligently to maximize

its financial resources and engage

prospective students.

The University has received national attention for its innovative

adult education programs, which began in 1985. Adult education

programs are offered online and at more than 200 locations –

including 17 regional education centers – in Indiana, Kentucky and

Ohio.

Undergraduate and graduate degrees for adult learners are offered

in business, nursing, education, ministry and counseling. IWU offers

doctorates in organizational leadership and nursing practice.

In 2009, Wesley Seminary at Indiana Wesleyan University opened in

Marion as the first seminary in the history of The Wesleyan Church.

In recent years, the annual survey of American colleges by U.S. News

& World Report has recognized Indiana Wesleyan for its educational

quality and affordability. IWU is now ranked as one of the top 50

Regional Universities in the Midwest.

With 1,000 employees, the University is the second-largest employer

in Grant County and has been listed by two national organizations

among “best places to work.”

Indiana Wesleyan University, an evangelical Christian

comprehensive university of The Wesleyan Church, was founded

in 1920 and is committed to liberal arts and professional education

through undergraduate and graduate programs.

Indiana Wesleyan is the largest independent university in the state

in student headcount. The University is also the largest of the nearly

180 member and affiliate institutions in the Council for Christian

Colleges and Universities.

Traditional students attend classes on Indiana Wesleyan’s 230-acre

campus in Marion, Indiana. Most buildings on the residential campus

have been built in the last 25 years, so students live and learn in

state-of-the art residence halls and academic facilities.

The most significant single building in University history, a 3,800-

seat Chapel Auditorium, was dedicated in January of 2010.

Indiana Wesleyan offers more than 94 undergraduate majors. An

increasing number of honors students has led to the creation of the

John Wesley Honors College for residential students.

BECKETT BECOMES FIRST ALUMNI WORLD CHANGER

Cheryl Beckett ‘00 became the first person chosen for the new honor of Alumni

World Changer. Beckett, 32, was killed in Afghanistan in 2010 while providing

humanitarian assistance to one of the poorest regions of the war-torn country.

IWU’s North Hall residence also honored Beckett by taking the name “Beckett

Hall” in a ceremony during Homecoming.

Noelle Hagen, a Beckett Hall resident director, championed the effort to rename

North Hall.

“The reason why I

thought it would be so

beautiful and meaningful

to have the hall named after

Cheryl is because our hall is a

mentoring hall, and we aspire

to be women who are living

out passionate lives of service in community with others and Cheryl embodied that

mission,” Hagen said to The Sojourn student newspaper. “She worked with women

in Afghanistan and taught them practical life skills and things like gardening and

skills in the home. That was her mission.”

MARION CAMPUS HOSTS HISPANIC EDUCATION

SUMMIT

The Marion residential campus proudly hosted the 2012 Hispanic Alliance Education Summit on October 17, in partnership with the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC). The annual summit highlights the academic challenges faced by Latinos and education providers. Attendees include pastors, church leaders, academic administrators and educators.

“Recent research shows that the American Latino population, with an average age of 27, makes up 16 percent of the national population and 22 percent of the K-12 population,” said President Henry Smith. “However, 19 percent of Latinos in America have earned an associate degree or higher compared to 38 percent of all adults. These statistics must change.

“Our focus is the national Hispanic dropout rate and our goal is to identify solutions to help students graduate,” Smith said, referencing the conference agenda.

Speakers included Dr. Carlos Campo, President of Regent University and Chairman of the Alliance for Hispanic Christian Education, and Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of NHCLC.

ENDOWMENT GROWTH GARNERS NATIONAL

ATTENTION

Since kicking off a donation-matching program in 2010, IWU’s endowment has grown 47% to $82,256,000--an amount well above both the Indiana and national averages.

Approximately 17% of this growth came from investment performance and 30% from fundraising. Today, about 70% of the endowment goes to scholarships and about 30% to operational support.

IWU’s prodigious endowment growth caught the attention of the national media. In an article published by the San Francisco Chronicle, Executive Vice President Dr. Keith Newman explained IWU’s emphasis on endowment, especially for scholarships:

“The cost of education has risen so dramatically we feel like the endowment is the key to our future,” he said. “I think it’s fair to say we have a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds at our school, but the heart of our school is really middle class.

“We know that parents are feeling financial pressure due to the economy while, at the same time, they want the value of a Christian higher education for their children,” Newman said. “The IWU Board of Trustees and Administration are working diligently to provide as much help as we are able through the increased financial assistance made possible by a growing endowment. It is only because of the generosity of our donors who embrace our mission that we are able to grow the IWU endowment. We thank God for their faithfulness and their trust in IWU.”

The University has added 52 new endowments for scholarships in the last three years and now has three endowed chairs.

“Building the endowment is critical to address long-term affordability for students and to provide support to academic programs,” said Dr. Duane Kilty, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

CORNERSTONES LAID FOR TWO NEW FACILITIES

Our community gathered twice this year to pray over the cornerstone of a new addition to the Marion Campus.

In April, we dedicated to God the construction of a 21,000-square-foot facility for Wesley Seminary at IWU. Construction started earlier this spring on the $7 million building, which is scheduled to be completed in time for fall 2013 classes. The building will have space for classrooms, faculty offices and a multi-purpose gathering place for students to study and fellowship.

“This building says we are something real, something tangible. You can point to this building and say ‘that’s the Seminary,’” said Dr. Ken Schenck, Dean of Wesley Seminary.

On October 5, we convened in the Chapel Auditorium to dedicate the cornerstone of the new, five-story science and nursing facility. The 110,000-square-foot building will house a suite of new research facilities for undergraduates, grad students and faculty members. The facility will enable the University to pursue a Health Sciences Initiative that aims to create several new graduate degree programs in Health Sciences fields.

“IWU has a well-established reputation for outstanding programs preparing nurses, athletic trainers and counselors,” said Dr. Dennis Brinkman, Associate Dean of the School of the Physical and Applied Sciences. “In addition, our students are sought out by schools of medicine, physical therapy and other health-care professions. Thus, we have the foundation on which a graduate-level health sciences program can be built.”

TWO NEW GRADUATE

DEGREES APPROVED AND

ACCREDITED

IWU opened the doors on a pair of new graduate-level degrees this year, the Doctor of Nursing Practice and the Master of Public Affairs. The Doctor of Nursing Practice, housed in the School of Nursing, emphasizes the development of a student’s capacity to impact the clinical setting as a leader and to use clinical research to improve and transform health care. Students will be prepared to lead healthcare delivery teams serving diverse populations, synthesize leadership principles regarding ethical and legal issues within health care systems, and develop innovative practice approaches and influence healthcare policy from an interprofessional perspective. The Higher Learning Commission approved the degree in October. 31 CreditsThree one-week classes on residential campus, remainder is online The Master of Public Affairs, housed in the School of Liberal Arts, prepares students to assume leadership and management roles in local, state and federal levels of government, and similar roles in community-based, non-profit organizations. The curriculum emphasizes skills needed for ethical and efficient public management—including planning, policy analysis and decision-making—that best represents and promotes the public interest. No other Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) school offers this degree. 36 Credits (24 common core hours plus 12 specialization hours)Specialization available in criminal justice and additional specializations pending.

For more information on both degrees, call 866-498-4968 or contact [email protected]

EVANGELIST/ACTOR NAMED 2012 WORLD

CHANGER

Evangelist and actor Kirk Cameron was chosen as the 2012 inductee into the Society of World Changers.

Cameron, a former child star best known for the hit ABC sitcom Growing Pains and the films Left Behind and Fireproof, has been an outspoken Christian since he came to Christ at age 17. Now 41, Cameron has spent much of his adult life relentlessly sharing the gospel of Christ and serving others through a variety of causes. Cameron has been involved with organizations providing rest and recreation for seriously ill children, offering advice to married couples, and raising awareness of human rights abuses in Southeast Asia.

Cameron spoke with Executive Vice President Dr. Keith Newman in front of a convocation of IWU students, faculty and staff at his induction ceremony on April 11.

“As talented and as brilliant as you may be because of the gifts God has given you, as you climb the ladder to the top, make sure your ladder is propped up against the right building,” Cameron told the students at the convocation.

IWU LEXINGTON HAS A NEW HOME

On June 1, IWU and the community of Lexington, Kentucky officially dedicated the new facility for IWU’s Lexington Education and Conference Center.

The 14,400-square-foot building has six technologically up-to-date classrooms, two of which can convert into one larger room; a chapel with a stained glass window; group study rooms; a comfortable student lounge/break area; a computer lab/library area and an executive conference room.

“We have a great affinity and a great appreciation for Kentucky,” said President Henry Smith at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We believe that this particular facility is a symbolic gesture that we are here to stay... Wherever we have a piece of Indiana Wesleyan University established, it is part of us.”

8NEW CHAPTERS IN

IWU WILDCAT HISTORY

This has been an eventful year for the IWU Wildcats, as teams from every sport entered exciting new chapters into their history. Two notable highlights:

The men’s basketball team took to the court at the historic Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana in November to play their first-ever game against the Indiana University Hoosiers in a preseason exhibition contest. The Wildcats ended the night down 86-57, but it was an exciting ride to the finish: IWU led for the first 13 minutes of the game. Money from the ticket sales will go to the Athletic Department’s 2013 mission trip to New Zealand.

IWU’s women’s golf team capped their very first year of play by earning two slots in the NCCAA National Championship. Freshmen Jessica Meloche and Brittany Brooks finished in 41st and 47th place, respectively, at The Hombre Golf Course in Panama City Beach, Florida. Meloche scored a two-round total of 179 (90-89), while Brooks turned in a card of 190 (92-98). They competed against nine full teams and six individuals.

9SCHOOL OF NURSING, SEMINARY REACH

ACROSS THE GLOBE

This year saw notable international initiatives in two major areas of the University. The School of Nursing reached out to China with two exchange trips with Nanjing Medical College and Shenyang Medical College. Members of the IWU community visited both Nanjing and Shenyang, and people from both colleges came to IWU as well.

“Because nursing treatments in the United States vary from those in China, this visit will enrich the vision of what nursing is for our guests,” Ihrke said prior to the Nanjing visit. “They will be able to observe how culture impacts health and healthcare.”

Meanwhile, Wesley Seminary broke new ground figuratively by starting classes based in Auckland, New Zealand. The Seminary’s first Pacific cohort included students from Australia, America, Fiji, New Zealand and Tonga.

“The Pacific church, particularly in New Zealand and Australia, has been wrestling with the challenges of embodying the Gospel in a Post-Christian context for centuries,” said Associate Professor of Proclamation and Christian Ministries at Wesley Seminary, Dr. Lenny Luchetti, who spoke to one of the classes in May. “As the North American church seeks to navigate the Post-Christian waves we find ourselves riding over the past few decades, the Pacific church can be an extremely helpful guide to us.”

10210FOR10: “EVERY STUDENT MATTERS”

This summer, President Smith invited IWU employees to take part in a new initiative called 210for10, in which 210 IWU employees would pray for 10 residential students once each month throughout the summer.

“I see the impact faculty have when mentoring students,” Dr. Smith wrote to employees in May. “I watch as supervisors and student employees work side-by-side caring for our community. I know that your influence on our students is life changing and that God is honored through your faithfulness.

“The spring semester ended with students praying throughout campus for us and for our community,” Smith added. “What better gift than for us to pray throughout the summer for their wellbeing and safe return this fall.”

Students this summer often reported appreciation for the prayers. “Love that I have professors from IWU calling me to pray with me,” tweeted Ashley Meldahl, adding the hashtags #blessed and #thankful.

A Retrospect ive Look at the Tenure of IWU’s Eighth President

No record of a person’s accomplishments ever stands

alone. It builds on those before it and it inspires those

who come after it.

Standing in front of the faculty and staff he has led

since his inauguration in 2006, the eighth President

of Indiana Wesleyan University, Dr. Henry Smith,

announced in October his prayerful decision to retire

as President effective June 30, 2013.

Smith’s story, with his heritage in the holiness

movement, his years of experience in Christian

higher education and his service to the students,

faculty, staff and friends of IWU, is integrally linked

with the past, present and future of IWU and The

Wesleyan Church.

The IWU of today is changed from the IWU of 2006

in many and critically important ways. Through the

development of new programs, new locations and

new initiatives, Smith steadfastly protected the charge

he inherited from his predecessors, the University’s

mission – to remain a Christ-centered academic

community committed to changing the world by

developing students in character, scholarship and

leadership.

H O L I N E S S

A S I G N I F I C A N T

M A R KSmith was born and raised an hour and a half away

from Marion. He traces his spiritual heritage back to

the Pilgrim Holiness Church, one of the antecedent

churches of The Wesleyan Church.

“My mother and father both were ordained ministers in

The Wesleyan Church,” recalled Smith, who was born

in 1950 in Frankfort, Indiana. “My father pastored a

church there in Frankfort, coming out of World War II

to our Wesleyan Bible college. For 50 years he faithfully

served the same community. My mother stood beside

him and since she was also an ordained elder in the

Wesleyan Church would occasionally preach when

he went on a revival, but mostly hers was a teaching,

Sunday school ministry.”

Growing up as a pastor’s child, Smith said that his

parents wanted him to enter some kind of ministry.

“My parents left a wonderful legacy of service to Christ

as nearly all of their eight children are in Christian

service,” Smith said.

While attending college, he felt a call to Christian

higher education. Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in

religious studies from God’s Bible School and College

in Cincinnati, and then went on to the University

of Cincinnati to get a second bachelor’s degree in

education.

Smith earned an M.A. in communication from the

University of Cincinnati and the Ph.D. in communication

from The Ohio State University. He was a graduate

teaching assistant at both universities.

The next 25 years of his career

would be spent in Christian higher

education in the Church of the

Nazarene, first at Mount Vernon

Nazarene University, where he

taught in the Communication

Department, later chairing the

department and starting the

campus radio station. He went

to Olivet Nazarene University in

1988 to direct the campus radio station and chair the

Department of Communication, ultimately becoming

Dean of the School of Graduate and Adult Studies. He

returned to Mount Vernon Nazarene University in 1997

to be Provost and Chief Academic Officer.

Smith’s service to Indiana Wesleyan University originated

with a phone call received from the University in 2004

inviting him to apply to be its first Executive Vice

President.

A long-lasting legacy can be hard to determine,

especially right at the end of a president’s term. And

perhaps no one can ever entirely grasp the impact any

individual has on his or her community.

As this chapter of IWU’s history closes, it contains

a host of concrete, measurable achievements worth

remembering.

At the time of Smith’s inauguration, IWU’s enrollment

was 14,000. The residential campus encompassed 165

acres and adult students were enrolling in 12 education

centers. During his presidency, enrollment grew to

a record 15,953 students, making IWU the largest

independent university in Indiana and in the Council

for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). The

residential campus has expanded to 231 acres outlined

with stately fences that define and add prestige to its

boundaries. Education centers throughout Indiana,

Kentucky and Ohio have increased to 17 with a new

service center opening in Illinois. Online student

enrollment continues to grow.

Under his leadership, the University was restructured

and several principal academic units were created.

Added to the College of Arts and Sciences, the College

of Adult and Professional Studies, and the Graduate

School, were the School of Nursing, Wesley Seminary

at IWU and the School of Health Sciences. IWU was

expanding its academic structure to serve students.

Several new initiatives were also launched: the Center

for Research in Adult Learning, the Life Calling Research

Institute, the President’s Author Series, the Advancing

Women’s Leadership program and the Zambia Semester

Study Abroad program.

Additionally, born from the desire to give authentic

Christian voice to and benefit the broader publics, IWU

generated the Ron Blue Institute, the Health Sciences

Initiative, the Provost Scholarship Initiative, the Center

for Public Policy Research, National Conversations and

partnerships with Joni and Friends Christian Institute

on Disability and Focus on the Family Leadership

Institute.

IWU has also made strong progress on diversity,

a top priority to Smith, through the formation of

the Multicultural Enrichment Council, and adding

diverse faculty and staff. The number of residential

undergraduate minority students increased to 8.1

percent from 4.5 percent six years prior. Diversity

throughout the student body has grown to 24 percent.

Academic inquiry is flourishing. Faculty have written

and published far more under Smith’s presidency than

they did in the University’s first 80 years. Nearly 70

percent of faculty have terminal degrees up from just

over 50 percent when Smith was inaugurated.

The residential campus in Marion has expanded to

include a new Chapel Auditorium, multiple residence

halls and townhouses, and a new classroom building

for communication, language and behavioral sciences.

Current construction provides new facilities for Wesley

Seminary and the Science and Nursing building. Each

building has been built with no debt. In addition, IWU

now has a substantial reserve fund for facilities.

“Dr. Smith has had a tremendous

impact on IWU, and when we go out

10, 15, 20 years in the future and we

write the history of this period for the

institution, I think it will prove to be

one of the most formative periods in

IWU’s history...when you look at all

of those things that got started here

during Dr. Smith’s tenure, and the

potential impact of all of them,

it’s huge.”

IWU’s endowment is the fastest growing in Indiana,

despite a rocky atmosphere for investment in recent years.

Total endowment growth has increased from $40 million

in 2006 to $88 million today, which includes funds for

student scholarships and also a new facilities reserve fund

to preserve the campus for future generations.

IWU Wildcats have prospered in athletics finishing

the last five years ranked as one of the top 25 athletic

programs in the NAIA. The athletic program has won the

Crossroads League All-Sports award for 11 consecutive

years and in 2007, the IWU women’s basketball team

won the program’s first NAIA national championship.

The 2007 team was the first NAIA women’s basketball

team to complete a season undefeated with a record of

38-0.

Students have been a regular feature in the President’s

House during the Smith years. They come over for dinner,

fellowship and sports on TV. His closest neighbors are the

students who live in the East Lodges, and the Smiths host

a Lodge Luau every year. The house has a hot tub and a

game room, and each year at Homecoming everyone is

invited to a bonfire in the front yard. “Living right here

on campus and interacting with students has been one of

our greatest joys,” Smith said.

His wife, Teresa, has also become a notable figure in

the IWU community. “She has really engaged with

students,” Smith said. “She has an office on campus so

she can interact with students easily and often. She’s been

passionate about what could be considered little things:

making sure the campus was decorated for Homecoming

and Christmas. And, for example, many students include

on their pre-graduation ‘Bucket List’ a dip in our hot tub.

Diversity is a strong component of Dr. Smith’s vision

of a Christ-centered education.

“Many universities talk about trying to become

more diverse,” Smith said. “Accreditors often

cite higher education institutions telling them to

improve their diversity. None of them ever responds

that they are not going to comply, but what often

happens is that their diversity initiative is not

prioritized. It just doesn’t happen. Someone said

to me, ‘It’ll never happen unless you really become

intentional and decide to do it for the right reasons.’

“Diversity is part of the heritage of our church. IWU

has gone for a long, long time with a tradition of

being pretty monolithic and attracting Caucasian

students – wonderful young men and women. But

our world is much more global and diverse, and it’s

time to change for all of the right reasons.

“It was during a time of prayer that I asked God,

‘What are the next things that really need to be

taken on by Indiana Wesleyan?’ ” Smith said. “And I

believe that He revealed to me that ethnic diversity

is one of the next things. The places that have

tried to too quickly without preparing the campus

culture have crashed and burned. I know places

that have recruited diverse students and they’ve left

the next year because their campus wasn’t ready. So

my prayer is that this will be a sustained initiative,

something that we’ll look back on in years to come

and say, ‘we don’t even think about it, it’s just part

of who we are.’”

“Teresa has graciously opened our home and shared

its facilities with those students,” said Smith. “She

has been a positive influence on their lives and a true

partner in my presidency.”

Smith has had the satisfaction of seeing the work IWU

is doing to receive wider recognition in the academic

community, in the Midwest and the evangelical world.

IWU has frequently been recognized for its academic

quality and affordability by U.S. News and World Report,

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance and the Chronicle of Higher

Education.

As the largest school in the Council of Christian

Colleges and Universities, IWU now has a chance to

define itself to the nation at large. Serving as a member

of the CCCU Board of Directors, Smith has been an

influencer in the future of Christian higher education.

Smith also impacted education in Indiana as Vice

Chair of the Independent Colleges of Indiana Board

of Directors.

“I know that he loves the students. That’s what he says he’ll miss the most, just being able to take time with the students and being personable, down-to-

earth, so that they feel like they know who he really is, and realizing that he doesn’t sleep in a suit.”

and that I will always serve with a sense

of humility.’ And I believe that God

answered that prayer for him.”

DR. JIM LO ‘82DEAN OF CHAPEL

Under President Smith, the University has seen

successes and challenges; but even roadblocks can be

instructive. It was an unsuccessful bid to build Indiana’s

first college of osteopathic medicine that directed the

administration’s attention to what Smith hopes will

become a premier program among Christian schools:

the Health Sciences Initiative.

“The medical school approval we had sought went to

Marian University in Indianapolis. But that caused us

to reflect and conclude that the health sciences were

very strong at IWU with much potential,” Smith recalled.

“The aggressive move of IWU to health sciences is a

natural and needed decision as we are building on our

strengths and providing a much needed service to our

world.”

With 35 years of experience in nursing education and

its track record of success for pre-medicine graduates,

and with an aging national population and a shortage

of health sciences professionals across the American

health care industry, expanding IWU’s health sciences

programs provides a unique opportunity for IWU to

fulfill the Christian mandate to serve.

“In the ‘80s, Indiana Wesleyan took a risk and got into

adult education, and look what happened,” Smith

said. The College of Adult and Professional Studies

now serves over 12,000 students in three states and

online. “Our current focus and commitment to the

health sciences is another watershed decision for IWU.

It will meet a need as did our decision to embrace adult

education in the ‘80s, and define us in distinct ways in

our future.”

“It takes a strong leader to have to face the issues he did, in the

economy that he did, and I think that history will reveal that he

made right decisions at the right time, because we still are very

strong, in spite of the economy, in spite of the forces that are

coming against higher education.”

“I think what happened is that the world started

recognizing that Indiana Wesleyan wasn’t just a place

that was growing in enrollment, wasn’t just a place that

was spending millions of dollars on buildings, but there

was something special happening here with the quality

of the education. And when people started recognizing

that, the academic reputation started going up,” he said.

Where once coming to work at IWU was a sacrifice for

talented professors who could be making a lot more

money elsewhere, today the IWU faculty openings are

competitive positions. This has been accomplished, in

part, due to the increase in faculty salaries during his first

two years as President. Faculty salaries were increased

from the 50th percentile to the 75th percentile of the

peer schools in the CCCU.

But success, Smith observed, can offer temptation,

as many Christian universities can lose sight of their

mission. “The thing I hope we’ll never do is sell our souls

for quality,” Smith said. “There are places that will do

anything to keep the rankings.”

When Smith announced his retirement, the Board of

Trustees appointed a Presidential Search Committee.

On June 30, 2013, Smith will formally step down as

President of IWU and assume the Office of Chancellor.

He’ll leave many of the specifics of his new position to

the discretion of the incoming president, but Wesleyan

Y The impact of Dr. Smith’s administration at IWU goes well

beyond the University community.

Under Smith’s administration, IWU created the first seminary

in The Wesleyan Church. Dr. Ken Schenck, now Dean of Wesley

Seminary, helped lead the task force Smith assembled as the

idea began to germinate.

“President Smith, I think, very quickly, even before he officially

became President, saw this as something that he valued,

something that he thought would be a good contribution

of Indiana Wesleyan, both to The Wesleyan Church and the

church at large,” Schenck said.

Smith committed $1.2 million of the University’s annual funds

to the project—a highly symbolic number that is equal to

The Wesleyan Church’s yearly financial contribution to the

University.

“That million dollars he gives to the Seminary every year is like

giving back to the denomination what it gives to us,” Schenck

said.

Smith saw that IWU had strengths that balanced out the

weaknesses of many traditional seminaries, Schneck said. It

was determined that IWU’s strong online program would be a

good fit for many pastors who lacked the time or the funds to

move across the country to get a ministry degree.

In addition to serving The Wesleyan Church, Dr. Smith and the

Seminary team have created an opportunity for education to a

large and diverse constituency of ministers for whom mainline

and traditional evangelical seminaries are not an ideal match.

22 I N D I A N A W E S L E YA N U N I V E R S I T Y

has asked him to engage with some denominational

initiatives involving international Wesleyan education.

Smith will remain Chancellor until December of 2015

and plans to find a meaningful focus and place of service

as he continues to serve IWU and The Wesleyan Church.

While the imprint of the Henry Smith legacy will continue

to reach throughout the years, it is already clear that

the impact he has left on Indiana Wesleyan University

is eternal. As he worked to maintain the University’s

mission of “changing the world by developing students

in character, scholarship and leadership,” Smith has

ensured this community’s ongoing ability to prepare and

graduate world changers.

“I’ve almost finished seven years as President and one

year as President-elect,” Smith said. “Even if you’re here

for 15, 20 years, it’s a short period of time in the life of an

institution. I pray that I have moved Indiana Wesleyan

University along in the right path preparing for the next

season to be successful. Maybe that’s the best thing you

can do.”“I think that he has served the student body

well. I can understand his reasoning for

wanting to retire, and while he did a great job

as IWU’s President I look forward to seeing

who takes his place and the path that the

University takes after President Smith gives

the reins to someone else.”

“He has strengthened the relationship between Indiana Wesleyan

Following the October announcement of Dr. Smith’s intent to retire as president on June 30, 2013, the Board of Trustees appointed a Presidential Search Committee chaired by Karen Hollenbeck, retired Vice President of Administration, W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The Committee plans to conclude its work by June 30, 2013 and have a President seated by July 1, 2013.

Each Search Committee member has signed a Confidentiality Agreement stating that all applicant information will be kept confidential during and after the search process. The Advisory Committee met on November 15 to discuss 10 questions provided by the Search Committee centered on the qualities and characteristics desired in IWU’s ninth president.

Believing its work will only be successful as it is bathed in prayer, Committee members have committed to fasting and praying one meal a week during the search process. All IWU community members are encouraged to join the Committee in fasting and prayer as the work to identify the next president progresses.

EFL Associates has been selected to partner with the Presidential Search Committee. EFL Associates has a 30-year history of successfully identifying and attracting high caliber professionals. They also have extensive experience working with faith-based universities and other non-profit organizations. EFL Associates has its headquarters in Leawood, Kansas, and an office in Denver, Colorado.

The lead consultant working closely with the Presidential Search Committee will be Jan Asnicar, Vice President of EFL Associates. Asnicar has personally led over 100 searches since joining EFL. Prior to joining EFL Associates, Asnicar’s career was in higher education and educational consulting. She specialized in assisting institutions with the development of programs for adult learners and, in fact, assisted in the development of IWU’s early adult, graduate and online programs.

According to Hollenbeck, “We are pleased to have her as a partner and believe we will have a highly qualified and diverse pool of candidates as a result of her work.”

An active search began in January.

The first week of April will be an especially busy one on campus.

The traveling exhibit of the Green Collection, the world’s largest

private collection of rare biblical texts and artifacts, will be on

public display. The full collection, owned by Hobby Lobby President

Steve Green, includes more than 40,000 antiquities. Exhibit dates

and location will be announced on indwes.edu.

On April 3, philanthropist and Hobby Lobby CEO David Green

will be the 2013 inductee into the Society of World Changers.

Green, 71, founded Hobby Lobby in 1970 as Greco Products, a miniature

picture frames company that he started in his garage. Today, Hobby

Lobby has 514 stores across the United States offering more than

65,000 products.

In 2010, Green signed The Giving Pledge, an agreement among many

of the world’s richest people to give away more than half of their

fortune before they die. Hobby Lobby’s website lists a number of

ministry partners, from Wycliffe Bible Translator to Harbor House,

a boarding school for troubled teens. David Green has received an

honorary doctorate from IWU.

The week, which also includes a Board of Trustees meeting, finishes

with the Fusion Youth Conference targeting high school students.

David Crowder is the headline artist for the Friday-Saturday event.

This year’s Fusion marks the 40th anniversary of youth conferences

at IWU. Registration is $50. Information is available at

Bridges to the Future…

You’ve heard of burning bridges, building bridges, crossing bridges and even

buying bridges, but have you ever climbed a bridge? I was presented with such

an opportunity recently when I climbed the largest and widest steel-arch bridge

in the world. The experience provided not only a great perspective, but taught me

something about vision and perseverance.

Completed in 1932, this bridge originally served 1100 cars per year and took eight

years to build. Fortunately the designers and engineers had a vision for the future

because 200,000 vehicles now cross the bridge daily. We can only wonder how

many people thought they were crazy for building a bridge to support that kind of

traffic.

Planning the bridge turned out to be more complicated and time consuming

than building it. The entrepreneurs had to overcome 85 objections and it took 10

years to gain the necessary approvals and permits. Today, 2.5 million people have

climbed the bridge and enjoyed the sights from 440 feet up in the air. Perseverance

paid off.

Since 1920, vision and perseverance have been hallmarks of Indiana Wesleyan

University. I can only wonder whether the founders envisioned almost 16,000

students, 17 education centers and 65,000 alumni serving around the world, but

dreams become reality when God blesses and He has certainly blessed IWU.

Thanks for believing in possibilities and investing in the future. You are helping

build bridges… bridges of faith, hope and love as our students change our world

and who knows where those bridges will lead!

Because of the impact Dr. Clarence Huffman had

on Chuck Killian ’59, Killian and his wife, Jane,

established the Clarence Huffman Memorial

Scholarship for Wesley Seminary at Indiana

Wesleyan University. Killian says that Dr. Huffman,

“had an incredible impact on my life. He was

very, very helpful with charting my agenda as

a preacher... I owe a lot to Clarence Huffman.”

Killian served as an ordained pastor in the United

Methodist Church and as a professor at Asbury

Theological Seminary.

John A. Hermann ‘72 played soccer, tennis, track

and basketball at IWU and believes it means a great

difference to young people’s futures if they engage in

sports. He and his wife Lori contributed to the men’s

basketball locker room renovation honoring former

player Caleb Dimmich because, “The school continues

to develop its athletic program and it’s important in

recruiting athletes that they have a nice facility. I’m

proud to help our current and future athletes.”

All three of Barry and Brenda Hummel’s children and

their spouses, while not music majors, were involved

in the Chorale. In appreciation for their experiences

and to generate support for future Chorale students

who chose “to expand from their major,” Barry

created two endowed music scholarships designated

for Chorale members who are not music majors.

Construction remains on schedule for the Science

and Nursing building slated to open fall of 2014.

The five-story, 111,250-square-foot facility

will house the new School of Health Sciences

and its planned degrees: a Doctor of Physical

Therapy degree (DPT), an Occupational Therapy

Doctorate (OTD) and Entry-Level Masters in

Athletic Training (MAT) and a Masters in Public

Health (MPH). The facility, which is adjoined to

Burns Hall, will allow the School of Nursing to be

consolidated, as well as the School of the Physical

and Applied Sciences.
