Rotary Tool Hints and Tips

1. Accessory Shank

The part of the Dremel accessory that is inserted into the tool. Most of the Dremel accessory shank sizes are 3.2 mm. Other sizes include 2.4 mm, 1.6 mm and 0.8 mm.

2. Collet Nut

Tightening the collet nut forces the collet’s fingers inward, securing accessories for use. Avoid excessive tightening.

3. Collet

The most precise way to hold an accessory in a high speed rotary tool. Even at high speeds and maximum pressure, collets stay tight. The collet is located underneath the collet nut inside the tool’s shaft.

4. MultiChuck

Allows users to change accessories without the use of any collet in the tool. Works with the Dremel corded and cordless high speed rotary tools, and all attachments except the router, cutting guide, grout removal, chainsaw sharpening and lawnmower sharpening attachments.

1. Your tool comes with an 3.2 mm collet and collet nut

2. Depress shaft lock button

3. Loosen and remove collet and collet nut from your tool

4. Begin to thread the MultiChuck onto the tool shaft while keeping shaft lock button depressed

5. As the jaws begin to close, insert the shank of the accessory into the chuck

1. Your tool comes with an 3.2 mm collet and collet nut

2. Now determine the accessory shank size

3. Select a collet to fit the shank diameter of the accessory

4. Depress shaft lock button

5. Loosen and remove collet nut

6. Insert properly sized collet

7. Replace but do not tighten collet nut

8. Insert shank of accessory

9. Tighten collet nut

Using Mandrel 401:Screw accessory on to the mandrel firmly.

Using MultiChuck:It accepts accessories from 0.4 mm to 3.4 mm shank. Dremel MultiChuck uses similar system as a conventional driller and dismiss the use of any collet. You can loosen and tighten it using hands.

Using Collets:Dremel accessories have different shank sizes, depending on the accessory you might need to use a different collet. Collets sizes are: 3.2 mm / 2.4 mm / 1.6 mm / 0.8 mm. Your multi-tool comes with a 3.2 mm collet.

Steps

1) Attach Grout Blade to Multi-Max or 568 Grout Removal kit to your Dremel rotary tool and set the tool to a desired speed (between 15,000 to 20,000 rpm).

2) In smooth even motions, continue to remove the grout by applying a firm, even pressure. Guide the tool at a right angle to the surface to prevent the blade from catching/cutting the edge of the tile. Depending on the hardness of the grout, a few passes may be required.

Steps

1) Measure length of flooring piece needed.

2) Mark laminate flooring to size of piece needed, using multiple marks to ensure a straight line.

3) Clamp flooring piece to workbench or other steady surface.

4) Use Saw-Max with SM500 Cutting Wheel to cut across flooring.

5) Place on floor and install on subfloor as required.

6) For neat finishing, use SM600 Carbide Flush cutting wheel to cut into skirting boards and to easily slot in laminate flooring.

Steps

1) Attach the 428 Carbon Steel Brush to Dremel rotary tool. Power the tool on and slowly increase the tool’s speed. Do not run the tool in excess of 15,000 rpm.

2) Make contact with metal, working tool in a circular motion to remove rust.

3) After removing built up rust, replace the 428 Carbon Steel Brush with the 952 Aluminum Oxide Grinding Stone to grind deep corrosion and rust down to bare metal.

4) Should there still be sharp burs present on the metal, use the 425 Emery Impregnated Polishing Wheel to remove. The object is now ready to prime and paint, if desired.

Steps

1) With a ½ inch wooden plank properly secured, use the Dremel Trio with the TR561 Multi-Purpose Cutting Bit to cut the board in the shape of the desired design.

2) After cutting, clean up any rough edges using the TR432 120 Grit Sanding Band at medium speed. Transform straight edges into decorative edges by utilizing the Trio. Tip: To cut straight lines or perfect circles use the TR800 Circle-Cutter/Straight-Edge Guide Attachment with your Trio.

3) Before staining or painting the sign, use the cordless Dremel Multi-Max, MM70W Wood Sandpaper and MM11 Hook and Loop Pad to sand your sign’s surface. For a smoother finish, start with 120 grit sanding paper and finish with 240 grit sanding paper, and always sand in the direction of the grain.

Steps

1) Test the different Dremel accessory bits and their effects on a piece of scrap glass before moving on to your work area.

2) Transferring your design to the vase: Method One. Draw your design freehand on the glass vase using a permanent marker.

3) Transferring your design to the vase: Method Two. Use a permanent marker on the outside of the vase to trace a photo or lettering that is taped to the inside of the vase.

4) Follow the pattern you drew on the glass using the Dremel Stylus and one of the accessory bits to etch your design directly onto the glass. Accessories 7103 and 7134 require the use of the 481 collet.

Steps

1) Find the wine rack pattern on the Dremel website or develop your own pattern, then mark your cut lines onto a board no thicker than ½ inch. Secure the board to make sure there’s clearance between the bottom of the working bit and the top of your workbench. With your Dremel Trio set to a high speed, begin your cut using a TR563 Hard Wood/Sheet Metal Bit and firm grip for optimal control. Set the tool’s foot depth so that ⅛ inch to ¼ inch of your cutting bit’s tip extends beyond the bottom of the work piece.

2) After cutting, unplug your tool for a quick change to the TR432 120 Grit Sanding Band. Run your tool over the less–than–perfect spots.

3) After sanding, use a TR615 Piloted Corner Rounding Bit to dress edges. Run the Trio at a high speed and push the router bit gently. Take a few passes removing only a portion of the amount of you want to remove at a time.

4) After routing, try sanding the wine rack’s surface with the cordless Dremel Multi–Max, MM70W Wood Sanding Paper and MM11 Hook & Loop Pad. Start with the 120 grit sanding paper and finish with 240 grit sanding paper for a smooth finish. Set the tool to a medium speed when sanding.
