As fall winds down, we turn our sights to the winter season.Once again, we offer a full array of opportunities thiswinter and I’m sure you will find something that you will

enjoy, be it a program or simply getting outside and visiting apark.

I’m thrilled to say that we made tremendous progress thisyear on projects in the parks. Irene’s devastation has all beenrepaired and in most cases the parks have been enhancedbeyond their original state. We will continue next year withmore repairs and improvements especially at Rotary Park.I’m proud to say that the majority of our park projects areperformed in-house with a very talented maintenance and parkstaff. With very limited resources, they have accomplishedgreat things.

All of our major facilities enjoyed strong seasons again thisyear. White’s pool had a great summer with beautiful weatherand lots of happy swimmers. The staff led by Steve Allen andKevin Stanley continue to provide a clean and professionalaquatic environment for the communities enjoyment. JayWillman and his staff were busy all summer at Giorgetti Arena

managing Flip Side Skate Park, one of the best indoor skateparks in New England. Pine Hill Park continued to attractthousands of visitors to the 16 miles of its diversified and wellmaintained trails. Thanks again to the Pine Hill Partnershipand all of the volunteers who help us take care of the trails.Doug Earle provided tremendous support to Pine Hill at thebike shop. Most visitors to the park stop by and get informationand/or purchase something from Doug and hundreds of folkshave benefited from his convenient and professional bikerepairs. Don’t forget next year if you haven’t tried mountainbiking yet we have rental bikes! The Godnick Center is busyalmost seven days a week. We provide programs from earlymorning into the evening Monday through Friday and somefolks utilize this facility even on weekends.

Mother Nature usually provides snow and cold weather thistime of year, but if you prefer to stay warm we have things foryou to do. Although we are a bit challenged to provide all of theindoor opportunities you deserve we have been able to accesssome gyms when available through the generosity of the schooldepartments and the Boys and Girls Club. We appreciate theseorganizations and their willingness to help, but this situation

has been a strain on their resources as well as ours. Hopefully, someday in the not too distant future we will be able to meetthe demand of the community’s indoor needs. If you enjoythe colder winter sports then go skating at the Giorgetti Arenawhich will be in full swing by the time you are reading thisbrochure or go hiking or snow shoeing at Pine Hill.

Thank you to the Rutland Herald and to the businessesthat choose to support our department by advertising in thispublication. Don’t forget to look for weekly updates everyWednesday in the Herald and visit our website at rutlandrec.com for news on ongoing and upcoming programs and events.

VOLUNTEER COACHESNEEDED!

Volunteer coaches are the backbone of therecreation department youth sports programs.

We appreciate the efforts of all of our volunteersover the years. Unfortunately, it has become

increasingly difficult to find an adequate numberof volunteers each season. Effective immediately,if there are an insufficient number of volunteers

at the program start date, the program may bedelayed, amended or even canceled. Please notethat participants fees for our programs are based

on adults stepping forward to volunteer; in theevent that programs have to move to paid staff, program fees will have to increase significantly. Please consider volunteering…as a coach or a

team parent..the opportunities are endless! Thereward is knowing that you made and investment

in the future of our community…our children! The recreation department can assist by offering

written materials and coaching clinics. Please contact April Cioffi 282-5750 for

additional information.
