Covering local business news is a big part of what we do. You’ll find stories about new businesses, eco-nomic trends and the area’s movers and shakers in our pages and on our websites.

Some stories are bigger in scope than others, of course, but even then, there are the little, local touches that help bring them home.

For example, when IKEA opened its doors in Centennial last summer, we were there talking to and photo-graphing folks waiting in line. Amid one of the most-anticipated business openings in years, we wanted to make sure we brought you some behind-the-scenes stories that illustrated what the new retailer means to area residents.

While the influx of new, large com-panies into our community is cer-tainly a major story, the heart of our

coverage is locally based and locally owned businesses and the people who drive them.

At the same time, we are a local business, one that has generated some news of its own as of late. In the past year, we:

☐ Unveiled new, improved web-sites.

☐ Moved into a new location in the Meridian office park in northern Douglas County.

☐ Changed our name.☐ Bolstered our web presence in

the community with specialty sites like Business Scene (www.ourcolora-donews.com/business/).

☐ Were sold by a company in Hous-ton to a local company based right here in the south metro Denver area. The Macari-Healey Publishing Co. is committed to serving our local com-munities.

☐ Bolstered our staff with several additional community reporters.

Change is the norm in the media

business these days, no question. As you may have heard, it has been a tough decade or so for newspapers. Survival mandates change. We be-lieve we have made changes for the better.

As a local business, we’re only as successful as our readers and adver-tisers allow us to be. A column writ-ten by Macari-Healey President and CEO Jerry Healey makes this point. In early February, shortly after assuming ownership of Community Media of Colorado, Healey closed out his intro-ductory column with the following:

“There is no way any of our plans can be achieved without your help, and I have a special favor to ask of our readers and the business commu-nity. Help spread the word that your hometown newspaper/website is lo-cally owned and operated again. Help us find more readers and advertisers and send us your news.

“The more you support us, the more relevant we become. And it is that rel-

evance that will make us successful, no matter the medium, and help us remain the historical record for our communities and a force for improve-ment and progress.”

While Healey was specifically talk-ing about the media company he had just assumed ownership of, much of what he wrote can be applied to any local business. We’re all dependent on each other.

To that end, Community Media of Colorado can help local businesses fulfill their goals. Our account execu-tives serve as marketing departments for smaller advertisers who cannot af-ford a large ad agency.

Members of our staff are trained to provide digital and print solutions targeted at helping small and me-dium-sized businesses (SMBs) find success.

Ultimately, the success of SMBs in our communities is critical to our success. ■Chris Rotar is the editor of Community Media of Colorado

Three Generations of Hearing Care

Twenty-five years ago, Dr.Julie Prutsman recallswatching her Uncle Bill,Aunt Alice, and motherKaren helping people withhearing loss and beinginstantly drawn to theprofession. In fact, thefamily jokes that audiologymust be “in the genes”since Dr. Julie’s grandfatherstarted his family in theprofession in 1952 whenhe opened his first Beltonepractice in Grand Rapids,Michigan.

For the past sixty years, her family’s goal has beento offer professional,trust-worthy, andcompassionate care to those

seeking better hearing andcommunication abilities. After 12 years of workingin her parents’ practice, Dr.Prutsman and her husbandPatrick started The SoundRelief Center in herhometown of HighlandsRanch.

While continuing thefamily tradition, they havebeen fortunate enoughto combine two of theirpassions: helping peopleimprove their quality of lifethrough better hearing, andserving the community.

Dr. Julie strives to achievethis goal by educatingthe community aboutthe latest advancementsin hearing technology,as well as eradicatingthe misconception thatnothing can be done tohelp people who sufferfrom tinnitus (ringingof the ears). She is anexpert in finding the righttreatment approach for

each individual patient, since no two cases ofhearing loss or tinnitus arethe same.

Patrick spends his timesearching for opportunitiesto help the community atlarge. One of his projects isworking with Assist 2 Hearand the Hearing LossAssociation of Americato promote and implementthe use of hearing loopsin the community. Withthis technology, people ofall ages who suffer fromhearing loss can enjoymuchmore fulfilling experiencesin public venues, suchas church and worshipcenters, classrooms, andfine arts facilities.

If you have any concernsabout hearing or tinnitus, you owe it to yourself tovisit The Sound ReliefCenter and give Dr. Julieand Patrick the opportunityto earn your trust andshowcase their service.

Good hearing is so important. Hearing loss canimpact relationships with loved ones, work success, safety, and the ability to stay in the game. If you arewondering about your hearing or the hearing of aloved one, ask these simple questions:• Do you have trouble understanding conversationsat parties or restaurants?• Do you turn the volume of the TV or telephone uplouder than others?

• Have friends, family, co-workers or neighborstold you that you have trouble hearing andshould have your hearing tested?

• Do you feel that people mumble?• Do you hear a ring or buzz in one or both of your ears?

“My wife Leah and I fell in love doing what welove,” said Mark Greksa, co-owner of Colorado’sRoyal Gorge Route Railroad. “We’ve been travelingtogether since we met at Fort Lewis College in the80s. It’s our passion, so it’s not surprising that wechose to make tourism our life’s work.”

They began in the travel trade as ski instructors andski guides on the Armed Forces Recreation Base inBerchtesgaden, Germany. “We learned early on,as avid travelers and front-line service providers, what creates a truly special guest experience,”said Greksa.

In 1973, Leah’s family opened the GeorgetownLoop, and the couple began their work in the trainbusiness. “We grew slowly, applied what we’dlearned in the tourism business, but more thananything, we operated from a base of really goodinstincts,” said Greksa.

In 1998, the Greksas turned their attention to thebiggest opportunity of their lives. “Fortunately,it was well known that we accomplished somegood things in Georgetown, so we were given thechance to bid on the Royal Gorge Route line,” saidGreksa.

“We pursued it because we were taken by thestunning beauty of the Royal Gorge and knewguests would love it too. But we also couldn’tresist the chance to become a part of Coloradohistory. The Royal Gorge Route is the oldest railline in Colorado. And at the time, no other trainsoffered gourmet dining in Colorado, so we turnedour attention to building a gourmet lunch anddinner experience.”

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad runs through theRoyal Gorge—one of Colorado’s most dramatic

canyons. 1,000-foot sheer granite cliffs enclosethe narrow Gorge, which leaves just enough roomfor the rough-and-tumble Arkansas River, nativevegetation and wildlife, and the Royal Gorge Routerail line. “The Royal Gorge is a natural wonder thattook three million years to create. It’s worth thetrip,” said Greksa.

Today, the train runs from March through Decemberoffering many classes of service, including vistadome, coach, bar car, first-class dining experiencesand entertainment excursions. “Spring, summerand fall are the high season for us,” said Greksa.“Our gourmet lunch and dinner trains are one ofthe best dining experiences in Colorado. But nomatter what class of service guests choose, theyhave access to our open-air cars where they viewthe Royal Gorge in a more personal way.”

The Royal Gorge Route has grown its holiday eventbusiness tremendously throughout the last severalyears. “We draw about 20,000 people to the RoyalGorge for our Santa Express Train,” said Greksa.“It runs late November through late December andit’s our biggest special event excursion of the year.We also host a number of others, including EasterBrunch, Mother’s Day Brunch, and Oktoberfest. These arewonderful excursions that families love.”

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad employs more than100 team members and draws more than 100,000people from around the world annually. It alsogenerates more overnight stays and tax dollars thanany other tourism destination in the region.

“The Royal Gorge Route Railroad is a quaint littlecity on wheels,” said Greksa. “And every one of usis passionate about fulfilling our promise to guestsfor a memorable experience through Colorado’sgrandest canyon.”

Open March 17 – December 31Trains run daily @12:30 p.m. nowthrough May 26 with vista dome,

With April 15th fastapproaching, the pressureis on to get your taxes

filed and paid on time. Plus, youstill have all your other bills due, which likely means you’re shorton cash. Why not take advantageof items that are sitting aroundyour home collecting dust? “Goldis a very valuable commodity,”says Jeanne Leo, Vice Presidentof Marketing at Golden NuggetGold Buyers. “When the economyis weak and families are strug-gling to make ends meet, gold is agreat way to generate some extraincome.”

With seven locations aroundthe Metro Denver area, a brandnew Fort Collins location andmore store openings plannedsoon, Golden Nugget Gold Buyers

purchases most precious metals aconsumer might have on hand.Whether it’s gold, silver andplatinum jewelry or silver tea sets, flatware, candlesticks, or platters, they’ll buy it. They’ll purchaseyour unwanted jewelry, even if it’s

broken. They also buy gold coins,as well as US currency – dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars –minted before 1965.

Why come to Golden NuggetGold Buyers to sell your gold andother precious metals when, asLeo puts it, “Everybody and theirbrother seem to be in the goldbuying business these days?”They’re not a phone store or apawn shop. Their stores are safe, secure and very inviting, and thisis all they do. As licensed profes-sionals in the precious metalsindustry, they are experts in thefield. They know the market pricesand the true value of your preciousmetals. Not only are you certain ofgetting a fair deal, Leo assures you,“Sellers will get the best deal inDenver from us. We pay the high-est you’ll find.”

The process is extremelysimple. Come in to one of theirmany stores with your items. Sitdown with a buyer who performs athree-step verification of the valueof your items. They weigh youritems and make you an offer. Thenit’s up to you whether you want

to walk out with a check or not.No pressure. It’s that simple, andcustomer service is the focus.

You don’t even need to comeinto a store to earn extra moneyfor your bills. They’ll help you setup a gold party in your home. “It’slike a Tupperware party,” explainsLeo. “But tell your guest to leavethe check book at home. They’lltake a check home instead.” Andthe best part is, the hostess gets acheck on the spot for ten percentof the value of the gold purchasedat the party, plus many other perksas well.

Golden Nugget Gold Buyershas seven conveniently locatedstores in the Metro area, includ-ing Arvada, Centennial, Denver,Englewood, Lakewood and twostores in Aurora, plus a brand newlocation in Fort Collins.
