Scranton SoftballHead CoachMia Collarini

Mia Collarini made quite an impression during her recently-completed four-year career as a member of The University of Scran-ton softball team.

Now she'll look to make even bigger headlines

when she takes over as head coach of the program for the upcoming 2012 season.

She replaces Colleen (Mahon) Moyer, who led the Royals to an overall record of 79-82 record (.491) over the past fi ve seasons, including three Landmark Conference tournament berths (2008, 2010, 2011).

A native of nearby Jessup, Collarini is a 2011 gradu-ate of Scranton with Bachelor of Science degrees in counseling and human services and history and is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in school counseling. She becomes the 12th head coach in the program’s 35-year history.

Collarini enjoyed a highly-successful career as a four-year member of the Royal softball program. A two-time all-Landmark Conference selection (1st team in 2008, 2nd team in 2011) and a 2008 fi rst-team South region selection in Scranton’s previous affi liation with the Eastern College Athletic Confer-ence (ECAC), she fi nished her career as the Royals’ all-time leader in walks (66), third in at-bats (405) and doubles (28), fi fth in hits (125) and triples (10), and sixth in sacrifi ces (11).

Collarini, who served as team captain her senior year, batted .309 for her career, including a .401 average in 2008 as Scranton won a school-record 27 wins and advanced to the Landmark Conference postseason tournament in the league’s inaugural season of competition.

That 2008 season is one that Collarini will likely never forget. She set Scranton season records for runs scored (46), walks (23) and at-bats (137), and her 55 hits were the third most in the program’s history. She also belted 15 doubles and fi ve triples, which is tied for second and fourth most, respectively, in Scran-ton history. Collarini was just as successful in the classroom, too, earning a spot on the Landmark Conference Aca-demic Honor Roll three times (2009, 2010, 2011) and

was named third-team District II all-Academic by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) this past spring. She also served as a mem-ber of the History Club, Colleges Against Cancer, Counseling & Human Services Association and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Jane Johnson has worn many hats during her 22-year affi liation with The University of Scranton.

This spring, she’ll rejoin the softball program to help former Scranton standout Mia Collarini transition from playing to coaching. The upcoming 2012 season will be Johnson’s third as an

assistant softball coach, having served previously under the late Jerry Alunni, a tenure that included a 17-win season in 2004, the most victories for the program since 1990.

Johnson has also been a highly-successful head coach of the university’s women’s tennis program. From 2001-2004, she led the Royals to a 29-19 record (.604) that included a tie for the Freedom Confer-ence regular-season title in 2002 and berths in the championship matches of the Middle Atlantic Conference tournament in 2003 and the fi rst-ever Freedom Conference tournament in 2004. She was twice voted the Freedom Conference Coach of the Year (2002, 2003) by her peers and developed seven all-conference players along the way.

Her career at the University began well before her appointment as head women’s tennis coach. Since August 1990, she has served as associate director of the University’s popular intramural and recreation program and continues to serve in this role.

Her extensive background in coaching includes serving as men’s tennis coach at her alma mater, Marywood University, from 1992 through 1994 and as an assistant with the women’s tennis program there from 1990-1992. She has polished her coaching skills by working as a private tennis instructor and as an instructor at numerous camps and clinics throughout the summer months. She holds a Bachelor of Sci-ence degree in health and physical education from Marywood and a master’s degree in elementary education from the University.

Jane and her husband, Rob, reside in Greenfi eld Township with their two sons: Tim and Kevin

Scranton SoftballScranton SoftballNews & Notes

The Royals will begin their 36th season of intercol-legiate competition this spring under fi rst year head coach Mia Collarini, a 2011 graduate of Scranton who was twice named all-Landmark Conference during her standout career. The program is 22 wins shy of 500.

The Royals are picked to fi nish fourth in the Land-mark Conference, according to a preseason poll of the league's coaches and sports information direc-tors. Scranton has qualifi ed for the conference's postseason tournament three times in the league's four-year history.

The Royals return 14 letter-winners, including seven starters, from last year's team that went 18-14 and 7-5 in the Landmark Conference. Among the no-table returnees are senior catcher Ashley Vosilla, a 2011 fi rst-team all-Landmark Conference performer; senior pitcher Christine Capalbo, a 2011 second-team all-conference performer; junior pitcher Samantha Boccolini, 7-7 with a 3.14 ERA last year; ju-nior Kristen Williams, who hit .282 with two home runs and 16 RBI; senior Tia Dimou, a three-year starter at fi rst base; junior Jamie Shackles, a two-year starter in the outfi eld; senior Kelly Zaccheo, a three-year starter in the infi eld and as a pitcher; and junior

outfi elder Kaitlyn Frazza, who hit .338 last season

In addition to losing Collarini from last year's start-ing lineup, the Royals also say goodbye to Annie Zeleniak, perhaps the most prolifi c hitters in the pro-gram's history. Zeleniak led the entire NCAA Division III in hitting last season with .580 batting average. She is the Royals' all-time leader in hits (186), at-bats (421), runs scored (114), RBI (149), and doubles (46).

For the second straight year, the Royals will call the Jessup Youth Softball Complex in nearby Jessup home. Scranton went 8-2 in 10 home games there last season.

The Royals hit a healthy .304 last year and out-scored their opponents, 179-100. Scranton also posted a team slugging percentage of .418 and an on-base percentage of .378

The Royal pitching staff struck out 89 batters last year while walking only 27. Capalbo led the staff in wins (11), innings pitched (95.1), strikeouts (49), earned run average (1.91), and complete games (14). Boccolini also put up some impressive num-bers; she threw 93.2 innings, struck out 36 batters, and completed 13 games.
