Buildinguponthefoundationlaidlastseason,second-yearheadcoachGenoFrugolipreaches the same mantra he has since his first dayonthejob. “Ourgoalistogetbettereveryday,”Frugolisaid.“That’sbeenthegoalsincedayoneanditdoesn’tchange.It’sgoingintothegym,learningthesystemsandbeingcomfort-ablewitheachother.Wehavesevennewgirlsinourgym,whichisalargenumber,andtheyhavetobuyinandgetonthesamepage.” FrugoliandassistantcoachPriscillaMorganhittherecruitingtrailafterthe2011seasontobeefuptheteam’sheightandphysi-calpresence,somethinghesaidwillhelptheteamimproveoverall. “Iputblockingmoreatapremiumthanalotofcoaches,”Frugolisaid.“LastyearIwasdisappointedwedidn’tgetmoreblocks.Wesawitinacoupleofmatches,butIwantedtogetbigger.That’sgoingtohelpourdefense.It’sexcitingtoseewe’regoingtobeasphysicalasotherteamsintheconferenceandthat’sgoingtohelpus.” Thecoachingstaff ’shardworkpaidoffintheadditionofthreefreshmensixfeetortallerandaformerAll-SouthlandConferencesetterinseniorBeckyBekelja.Thetalentednewcomersjoinanexperiencedgroupofre-turners.Eightofthe10returningplayershaveseen significant starting time in their careers. UpfrontSoutheasternmustreplaceits

toptwoblockersfromaseasonago,All-South-landperformerPaigeDollison(90totalblocks)andKinseyWilliams(51totalblocks).Dollisonalso finished second on the team in attack percentage(.222). CourtneyDonald,theLadyLions’leadingoffensiveplayer,returnsalongwithZoeDoug-las,TamraGrayson,StephanieMueller,ElizabethRameeandJessicaRauch.TheywillbejoinedbyfreshmenShelbyDevlinandVeronicaTurk,eachstanding6-foot-2. Most,ifnotall,canplayelsewhereonthecourt, giving Frugoli a little bit of flexibility he didn’thavelastseason. “Youalwayslookatthetalentyouhaveandsaythispersoncouldbebetterhere,solet’smovethem,”Frugolisaid.“Courtneycouldplayoutsideormiddle,thoughitlookslikeshecouldbebackinthemiddle.Someofthenewgirlsweremiddlesinhighschool,buttheycouldbemovedtotherightsideoroutside.Istilldoalotofthat.We’restillsuchayoungteamthatsayingyou’llkeepsomeonewherethey’vebeenplayingisnotwhereweareasaprogram.” Anothersix-footfreshmanissetterMikaylaShippy.ShejoinsreturningstarterLindseyYoungandMcNeeseState-transferBeckyBekela.Young,ajunior,sitsseventhonSoutheastern’scareerassistslistandBekeljaisaformerall-conferenceperformer.ThetwoveteransettersprovideFrugolithefreedomto

FacingschoolsfromasfarawayasCon-necticut,Montana,SouthDakotaandUtahinthe first two weeks of the season, the Lady Lionswillhaveachancetoseehowtheycom-paretoteamsfromacrossthecountry. Louisiana University after being namedthe school’s 15th Director of Athletics in

Novemberof2009. BeforearrivingatSoutheastern,BellairsservedinthesamecapacityatSavannahStateUniversity. AformerseniorathleticsadministratoratVirginiaMilitaryInstitute,Bellairsoversees15NCAADivisionI affiliated programs that compete in the SouthlandConference.SincejoiningtheSouthlandin1997,theLionshavecaptured23regular-seasonortournamentchampionships, includingfourregular-seasontitlesinwomen’s soccer, three in women’s tennis, three inmen’sgolfandtwoinmen’sbasketball.Southeasternalso claimed the Southland Men’sAll-SportsTrophyin2008-09, highlightedby the2009Men’sOutdoorTrackandFieldchampionshipwiththewomen’ssoc-cer team earning its first-ever berth to the NCAAChampionships. During Bellairs’ tenure at Southeastern, theUniversity’s athletic facilities have seen significantimprovements,includingrenovationstolockerroomsandcoaches’offices.TheSoutheasternbaseballteamsaw the addition of a covered hitting facility and anewbullpen areawhile theRayA.Naquin StrengthandConditioningCenter installednew flooring andworkoutequipment. The Southeastern track and field team sawimprovements with locker rooms, along with astate-of-the-art facility. In volleyball, the Lady Lions’willmove into an expanded locker roomwhile thewomen’s tennis team moved into its new lockerroomsandrefurbishedcourts. ProbablythebiggestimprovementduringBellairs’tenurehasbeenthereplacementoftheplayingsur-

faceatStrawberryStadium.Thenewsurface-whichwas installed in June 2012 - was the same surfaceused in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome during the2010season. With improvementstohelpSoutheasternonthefield,therehasalsobeensteadyimprovementintheclassroomandAPR scores. Elevenof the 15 sportsmetorexceededthestandardof925setforthbytheNCAA. Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was atSavannahState,anNCAADivisionIprogram,with15teams,sinceJuly2008.Thereheimplementedanaca-demicssuccessplanthatincludedanacademic“roadmap” for each student-athlete from registration tograduation. He developed aTitle IX/Gender Equityprogramthatinvolvedreworkingtheathleticbudgettoresolve long-timeproblemswithstaffing, facilitiesandscholarships.DuringhistenureatSavannahState,football,men’sbasketball,softballandwomen’svolley-ballteamsallsawsignificantimprovementinseasonalwins. PriortojoiningSavannahState,Bellairsservedassenior associate director of intercollegiate athleticsfrom2005to2008andheadbasketballcoach from1993to2005atVMIinLexington,Va.Responsibilitiesincludedmarketingandpromotions,ticketoperations,managementofthelicensingprogramandservingasdirectorforallkeyathleticfacilities.Therehecreatednew pricing strategies, athletic department promo-tions and new revenue streams.As head basketballcoach, he was named the Southern ConferenceCoachoftheYear,theVirginiaCoachoftheYearandthe“SportsIllustrated”UnknownCoachoftheYear. Bellairs, anativeofRichmond,Ky., also servedasassistantbasketballcoachatJamesMadisonUniversity

in Harrisonburg,Va., from 1988 to 1993, where histeams sawoneNCAA tournament appearance andfiveNITappearances;asassistantbasketballcoachatthe University of Massachusetts (1986-1988); assis-tant basketball coach at the University of Maryland(1984-1986); and head basketball coach, head crosscountrycoachandassistantbaseballcoachatWilkesCollegeinWilkesBarre,Pa.(1983-1985). Bechac, a 1990 graduate in history at LoyolaUniversity, worked for 13 years at the high schoollevelbeginningasanassistantcoachatSt.Paul’sHighSchoolinCovington.HespentoneyearatTeurlingsCatholicHighSchoolbeforeacceptingthepositionasAssistantAthleticDirectorandHeadFootballCoachatGanusHighSchool. TheMandeville,La.,nativemovedtoPopeJohnPaulIIHighSchoolinSlidellasheadfootballcoachin1996andearnedthreeCoachoftheYearawardsinhistenurewiththeJaguars.HemovedtoNorthshoreHighSchoolfortwoyearsbeforespendingtwosea-sons in theBogalusaCitySchoolSystem,servingasAthleticDirectorandHeadFootballCoachatBoga-lusaHighSchool. Bechac earned his Master’s degree in Loyolain 2003 and is currently a Doctoral student at theUnitedStatesSportsAcademy. Entering his fifth year atSoutheasternastheNCAAFac-ultyRepresentative is JosephL.Morris,Ph.D. Inhiscurrentrole,Dr.Mor-risisinvolvedintheassuranceof

theacademicintegrityoftheathleticsprogramandinthemaintenanceofthewelfareofthestudentathlete.Heistheuniversity’srepresentativeofthepresidentandfacultyonissuesregardingathletics. Dr.MorrisisanAssociateProfessorofAccount-ing and Coordinator of the Accounting InternshipProgram at Southeastern Louisiana University. Heholds B.S. and M.B.A. degrees fromArkansas StateUniversity(1973and1974),andholdsaPhDdegreefromtheUniversityofMississippi(1986).Dr.MorrisisalicensedCPAinArkansas(inactivestatus). He has been employed by Southeastern since1984, and has served in various capacities includingDepartment Head ofAccounting for 11 years. Dr.MorrisservesontheSouthlandConferenceAdvisoryCouncilaswellastheconference’sComplianceCom-mitteeandAwardsCommittee. Dr. Morris is a member of theAmericanAc-counting Association, Association of GovernmentAccountants,andtheAmericanInstituteofCertifiedPublicAccountants.

Leslie Rolling WelshDirectorofTicketOperations

BeginninghereighthyearatSoutheasternastheDirectorofTicketOperationsisLeslieRoll-ingWelsh. Inhercurrentrole,Rollingis responsible for all aspectsof

Southeastern’s ticketing program including seasonpasses,individualgamesalesandgrouppackages.ShealsoservesastheliaisontotheStudentAthleteAdvi-soryCommittee. BeforecomingtoSoutheasternin2005,RollingspentfouryearsasasalesassociatewithRed,Whiteand Brew. She gained extensive experience withpoint-of-saletransactionsystemsincludingtheareasof inventorymanagement aswell aspurchasing andreceiving. Rolling, a 2000 graduate in SportManagementatSoutheastern,earnedherMaster’sdegreeinBusi-nessAdministration at the University ofTennesseeatChattanoogain2003.WhileatUTC,shemanagedRiversideBeverageCompany. The Hammond native played one year of col-legiatevolleyballatLouisianaTechbeforetransferringtoSoutheastern. MarriedtoMauriceWelsh,thecoupleresidesinLoranger.

John LongAssistanttothePresidentforAthleticCompliance

Beginning his third year atSoutheastern as the AthleticCompliance Director is JohnLong. Inhiscurrentrole,Long is

responsibleforensuringthatSoutheastern’s15Divi-sion I sportsare incompliancewithregulationssetforthbytheNCAA, istheTitle IXcoordinatorandmanagestheNationalLetterofIntentprogram. Before coming to Southeastern in 2010, LongspentoneyearatRiceUniversityservingasaninternandAssistant to theDirectorofCompliance.WhileatRice,heresearchedNCAAlegislation,conductedNCAA rules education meetings with coaches andstudentathletes,managedtheNationalLetterofIn-tentprogramandservedasaliaisontothefinancialaiddepartmentforscholarships. Long, a2006graduate inPoliticalCommunica-tion at the University ofTexas, was the MarketingCoordinatorforMajorLeagueSoccer’sHoustonDy-namoduringthe2006season.HehandledallaspectsoftheDynamo’sadvertisingandpromotions includ-ingnegotiatingadvertisingcontracts,managingfinan-cialrecordsandcoordinatinggamedaypromotionalevents. AnativeofHouston,Texas,LongearnedtheNa-tionalSportsLawInstitute’sCertificateofSportsLawand his Juris Doctorate from Marquette UniversityLawSchool in2009.Hepassed theTexas StateBarlaterthatsameyear.

Mary Kathryn BorlandAssistantADforAcademicServices/SeniorWomanAdministrator

Mary Kathryn Borland be-ginsherfirstyearatSoutheast-ernafterspendingthepast fiveyearsatUAB. Beforeher arrival inHam-mond, Borland served as an

academic advisor in the Don M. and Marsha HokeHireStudent-AthleteAcademicCenter.Hermaindu-tiesincludeoverseeingtheacademicprogressfortheBlazers’footballandwomen’stennisteams.ShealsoassistswiththeLifeSkillsprogram.ShewasappointedastheBookCoordinatorin2010. A2004graduateofWesleyanCollegeinMacon,Ga.,Borlandobtainedherbachelor’s degree inMu-sicwithaconcentrationinvocalperformancebeforemovingtoTroyUniversity,wheresheearnedherMas-ter’sofScienceinSportsandFitnessManagementinMay2006. In 2004, Borland served as a student assistanttotheinterimathleticsdirectoratWesleyanCollege.ShefollowedthatbyholdingastaffassistantpositioninTroy’sstudent-athletesupportservicesdepartmentfrom2004-06. AnativeofDothan,Ala.,Borlandisalsoinvolvedinvariousorganizations,includingtheNationalAsso-ciationofAcademicAdvisorsforAthletics(N4A),theNationalAcademicAdvisingAssociation(NACADA),and she is the former athletics representative onUAB’sCampusAcademicAdvisoryCommittee.
