Who could be thinking about summer fun when we’re still getting bundled up to

go outside? As Vivian Wang of Fort Collins,

mother of 12-year-old and 8-year-old girls, puts it, “You have to be aware early of certain programs that you know fill up fast.”

Northern Colorado parents are looking beyond the bare trees and planning for summer. Universities, city recreation department, county programs and private organizations are launching summer camp plans right now. Browse a comprehensive list of camps in the resource guide on page 16. Parents of special needs children can search the listing of camp and activity resources on page 18 of the guide.

Jean Farley of Fort Collins has four children including a 10-year-old boy who plays hockey. “Because we have to sign up early to get in, we will give priority to scheduling the hockey ses-sions and looking for hockey camps,” she says. “We also plan our vacations

around the key activities our children love and will be doing.”

Summertime is a great time for young children to experiment with new activities or for school-aged children to try classes they can’t squeeze in during the school year. Wang says, “The girls try things they might not normally do on a day-to-day basis. For example, from last summer they have new memories of canoeing at the Girl Scout day camp, which they both enjoyed.”

Dual-choice campsIf you want your child to try out an over-night camp with a specific topic or focus, some of your favorite organizations may be following a recent trend of offering the variety of an overnight session in ad-dition to their regular commuter camps. As summer schedules roll out, parents should ask whether day camps have over-night options, and vice versa.

In 2010, the acting school la-de-da in Fort Collins added a weeklong ses-sion at Colorado State University’s (CSU’s) Pingree Park to its camp se-lections. The away session is designed

for children entering grades 7-12. “The overnight session creates a very passionate environment,” says Execu-tive Director Nick Turner. “Friend-ships are made, and the incredibly beautiful setting is hugely conducive to music and writing.” Turner also finds ways to include campfires, mov-ies, and social time. This summer the overnight session will be held June 10-14, and on the last day parents come up to see the show. La-de-da also offers four traditional in-town sessions during the summer.

STEM (Science, Technology, En-gineering, Math) Institutes, run out of Preston Middle School in Fort Collins, and offer a variety of program lengths. A host of topics delivered in three-hour-per-day sessions run for a week at a time. Institute participants might in-stead choose one of four, weeklong trips centered on STEM concepts.

If you think of Girl Scout Camps as strictly sleep away camps, think again...parents can find a Girl Scout Day Camp located between Larimer and Weld Counties at Swift Ponds. The

animal adventuresThe mild northern Colorado summer and rural setting offer a perfect back-drop for animal-related camps in the area. Organizations in Greeley (such as Plumb Farm through the Greeley Mu-seums), Fort Collins (such as The Farm at Lee Martinez) offer kids experience on actual working farms.

Horse enthusiasts have many camp choices including pony camps for younger children in Loveland (such as Sylvan Dale Ranch or Hearts and Hors-es) and Fort Collins (such as The Farm at Lee Martinez). For up-and-coming horsewomen and men, Gargot Farms is a riding academy that also offers pony camps in Berthoud. Last year, director and clinical psychologist Margot Nacey added equine-assisted psychotherapy programs for children and teens who have been through traumatic events. “Equine-assisted therapy teaches a child compassion for themselves, for animals, and for each other,” says Nacey. “It helps a child form a bond for communication with animals, enhancing the child’s feel-ing of self and understanding.”

For exposure to more domestic ani-mals and a bit of wildkind, the Larimer Humane Society offers one-week camps for children ages 8-12. Watch www. larimerhumane.org for forthcoming in-formation about the summer programs.

The CSU Summer Vet Science Program is targeted at older students in 10th through 12th grades.

The session is put on by the Edu-cation and Outreach Center of CSU’s College of Natural Sciences. “Partici-pants get a good feel for what is required to get into vet school,” says Courtney Butler, Assistant Director of the Edu-cation and Outreach Center. The class includes presentations, demonstrations, laboratories, and hands-on veterinary activities.

tech talkNot all children are wired to appreci-ate animals, sports, and the outdoors. The aforementioned STEM Institutes deliver classes covering more techni-cal topic areas including biotechnol-

ogy, robotics, video production, game programming, vehicle engineering, and clean energy technology.

“The small group setting and ex-tended time period offered in summer enrichment courses such as the STEM Institutes allow teachers to utilize technologies that are difficult to imple-ment in a traditional class of 30 stu-dents,” says Dee Dee Wright, Science and Health Curriculum Facilitator for Poudre School District. “The ‘outside the box’ experiences foster creativity as today’s students are thinking about tomorrow’s innovations.”

A national organization, iD Tech Camps, brings 2012 summer comput-er camps for kids and teens (7-17) to major university campuses including Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, and University of Den-ver. Visit www.internaldrive.com for more information.

Elaine Brush, Program Supervisor for Loveland Parks and Recreation, rec-ommends their Lego and science camps for a break from athletics. “The teachers

are always bringing in new projects, so these camps are not the same from year to year,” she says.

Linda Larson of Loveland, mom to 18-year-old and 16-year-old boys, speaks highly of the robotics programs offered through Loveland High School. “My boys used to attend the program as middle school students. Now that they are older, they work during the sessions.”

academics in actionMichelle Wetzbarger of Windsor, mom to a 10-year-old girl, requires some brain stimulation for her daughter over the summer. “I’m trying to mix education with fun,” she says. Wetzbarger says her daugh-ter has enjoyed the sessions she takes at Mathnasium, a math learning center located near the Council Tree Library on the east side of Fort Collins. “This keeps her brain going during the summer,” says Wetzbarger. “She can attend one to three sessions per week for one standard price, and we like that flexibility.”

Behavioral Sciences in Greeley offers its Summer Enrichment Program (SEP): residential and commuter camps for gifted and talented children. The SEP format for children entering grades 5-10 is two weeks in residence at UNC, with four, 75-minute weekday sessions. On Saturdays, instructors supplement the daily curriculum with trivia competitions and other engaging activities. Children ages 4 through those entering 4th grade attend the Young Child SEP Program, which runs three hours per day over a two-week session. Visit www.unco.edu/cebs/sep/ for more information.

Healthy bodiesBefore kids can think about sustain-ing performance at sports, they have to learn about nutrition. Relatively new businesses in Loveland (Simple Sup-pers-n-Sweets, www.simplesuppersn-sweets.com) and Fort Collins (Foodies Culinary Academy, www.foodiescca.com) host summer nutrition and cook-ing classes for children. The local health systems such as Banner Health and Poudre Valley Health offer healthy recipe resources and fit kid programs throughout northern Colorado. For example, Poudre Valley Health System’s “Fit Families on the Move” is a sum-mer program designed to keep families moving and active during the summer months. Registered families receive a Fit Families all-access pass for over 90 free or reduced-cost family activities in Loveland, Fort Collins, Windsor, Ber-thoud and Greeley.

Swimming is always a popular sum-

mer sport, and northern Colorado par-ents can find everything from special-ized competitive swim camps and highly competitive training at year-round USA swim clubs, to summer league or rec-reational teams, to swimming lessons. Loveland Parks and Recreation Athlet-ics Coordinator Kim Miller comments on the importance of their swimming and tennis leagues from Colorado Association of Recreational Athletes (CARA), “We want to provide that recreational, non-ranked opportunity to learn competitive skills in a relaxed envi-ronment. CARA tennis and swimming leagues run from approximately the be-ginning of June through the end of July.

Vortex Swim Club in Fort Collins is one of several year-round swim clubs that will offer summer swim camps. “Several-hour swim camps are a nice blend of time off for parents and swim-ming skill-building for their children,” says Debbie Duffy, Vice President of the Vortex Board of Directors.

If your child is in middle school or high school, it pays to ask your local high school what types of sports pro-grams they offer. Jo Campbell of Love-land puts her 12-year-old twins, one boy and one girl, in Thompson Valley High School football and basketball camps. “Middle school kids meet their future peers and to get to know a sport bet-ter through the high school,” she says. “High school athletes help coach the camps and the cost of the camps goes straight to the high school teams.”

Both UNC and CSU offer sports camps as well, in a variety of formats,

from half-day camps to day-long for-mats that better suit working parents. For UNC options, visit the website http://uncbears.com/information/camps/index, and for CSU camps, go to the link www.hes.cahs.colostate.edu/ysc.

arts abound A rich selection of fine arts and perform-ing arts opportunities exist for youth in northern Colorado. New this year is the partnership between Front Range Com-munity College (FRCC) and the Fort Collins Museum of Art (FCMOA) to offer The Community Studio. Coordina-tor Jennie Kiessling, who is also on the art faculty at FRCC, believes in the impor-tance of community-based, multi-age art programs. “It affirms the power of the arts to foster lifelong learning,” she says. Some classes are fee-based while others are free. The summer youth programs in drawing, painting, and mixed media will be posted at the FCMOA website under the educa-tion tab, at www.ftcma.org/education.php.

Many families whose children are musicians schedule their summer vaca-tions around marching band practice or summers-end summer band classes, all offered through the local school dis-tricts. CSU is giving a summer music camp for 7th-graders through recently graduated high-school seniors, running from July 8-13 with the option of a commuter or residential program. The university also offers a marching band leadership camp.

In a similar vein, CSU has posted its summer theatre program where kids ages 7-13 receive direction from CSU theatre faculty and students. The Front Range also boasts many private theatre companies with summer curriculum, including Colorado Academy of the Arts or Peanut Butter and Jam Revue in Fort Collins, and Up in Lights Productions in Loveland. Debut Theater Company has spring/fall programs.

What is the bottom line around planning for summer? Most parents hope they’ll be able to make the sum-mer fun for their children. As Falk from Greeley thinks about her daughter being off from school, she says, “Summer is about her. It’s her time, not mine.”

Worth every penny: The tutors were very focussed and professional, and I cannot get over the strides my son made. It truly has made a di erence in all our lives. I know I’m gushing, but that is HOW GREAT I think Huntington is! The sta went above and beyond to keep in contact with my son’s teachers, and really helped build his con dence. As he begins his fourth grade year, I am so thrilled with not only the real educational gains he has made, but his overall attitude toward learning and belief in himself. HIGHLY recommend! August 2010, parent of a 4th grade SVVSD student

When is the BEST time to HELP your CHILD SUCCEED THIS SCHOOL YEAR? Today! When it comes to helping kids succeed in school, no one does it better than Huntington. If your child struggles with homework, can’t keep up with classwork, or just wants to get ahead, call us. We can help. We can identify what is keeping your child from being his or her best and create a program of instruction tailored to his or her needs. Just a few hours a week can improve your child’s skills,

confi dence and motivation and the bad grades for good!

Blaise B. – Kindergarten“Huntington helps me learn how to write and read.”

Ann B. – Mom“I am so delighted with Blaise’s reading. It is so uent and he comprehends well. I know he is ready for 1st grade.”

From a CSU Student/former ACT Prep student at Huntington :Huntington Learning Center is the best thing I have ever done for my

learning. I joined the ACT program because my rst score was not high enough to get into college. After doing the program I raised my score signi cantly. Huntington not only helped with my reading, but also helped with my study skills. When it was time to apply to CSU, the

directors went with me to help me get in. Now I am at Colorado State University and if I did not go to Huntington Learning Center I would not be

at CSU. If you are thinking about Huntington I would recommend it fully.
