There are a lot ofmisconceptionsabout venousproblems, suchas varicose and
spider veins. When peoplehave large varicosities ontheir legs, often they realizethey have venous disease.Sometimes even with largevaricosities, however, there is a misconception among family doctorsand the general population that varicose veinsare just a cosmetic problem or a normal part ofaging. That is not true. Venous insufficiency istruly a disease and usually starts because of acondition that one inherits, such as weak veinvalves or walls.
Determining the extent of vein problemsrequires a Doppler duplex ultrasound scan. Inthe old days, doctors might have given peopledyes or performed difficult types of x-rays todetermine what is wrong. Now it is very easyto do this with a color flow venous Dopplerultrasound scan.
Venous reflux disease, also known as venousinsufficiency, is a condition affecting thecirculation of blood in the lower extremities. The tiny valves that normally force blood backup toward the heart no longer function, causingblood to pool in the legs, and the veins of thelegs become distended. Reflux causes medicalsymptoms like aching, cramping, restless legs, itching, ankle or leg swelling, heaviness andfatigue.
TheMorrison Vein Institute specializes inminimally invasive, in-office procedures forvaricose and spider veins. For patients withvenous reflux occurring below the knee,we often recommend ultrasound-guidedsclerotherapy injections. In this procedure theultrasonographer locates the veins underneaththe skin that aren’t visible to the naked eye. These injections are not the type used for surfacespider veins, only for the deeper tributaryveins that are diseased and refluxing. Another
procedure done at the institute is done withradiofrequency energy. A thin catheter is guidedby ultrasound into the damaged vein througha tiny opening. Endovenous Laser Ablation isanother very effective outpatient treatment forvaricose veins. Using ultrasound technology, athin laser fiber is guided into the vein through avery small opening to deliver pulsed laser heatto the diseased vein wall. Endovenous thermalor chemical ablation causes the veins to closeand eliminates venous reflux at its source. Both are successful options for treating venousdisease.
To treat bulging varicosities we typicallyrecommend ambulatory phlebectomy becauseit provides better cosmetic results than injectiontechniques. Ambulatory phlebectomy isperformed with local anesthesia by gentlyteasing the vein out of the surrounding tissuewith a small hook designed for that purpose. This method results in far less tissue damageand less postoperative discomfort than theoutdated stripping procedure.
WithMorrison Vein Institute’s education aboutgraduated compression hose wear, exercise, healthy weight maintenance, and by keeping
your annual follow-up visits, you can increasethe long-term effectiveness of all leg veintreatments and have healthy legs again.
Nick Morrison, MD, FACPh, is a world-renowned leader in the field of phlebology and has dedicated hismedical practice to veins for over 15 years. He is joined in practice by Charles Rogers, MD, and JamesMcEown, MD, and the Morrison Vein RN team. They provide a comprehensive medical treatment planwith a personal and individual approach to vein care.
