PACK HEADS NORTH For the first time since the 1997 season, NC State is playing its first two games away from home. After opening the season against Tennessee in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta, the Wolf- pack is heading to Connecticut to take on the Huskies. The meeting marks only the second between NC State and the Big East school, with the Pack winning the 2003 contest, 31-24. Tom O’Brien has faced Connecticut four times, winning all four contests, while Huskies coach Paul Pasqualoni is 0-2 against the Pack - losing in 1997 and 1998 as the head coach at Syracuse. O’Brien is also very familiar with the Big East, as he was the head coach at Boston College for 10 seasons, eight of which the Eagles spent in that league. His 2004 squad earned a share of the Big East title. O’Brien holds a 27-19 career record against Big East teams. Since coming to NC State in 2007, O’Brien is 4-4 against teams from the Big East, but has won three of the last four matchups, in- cluding back-to-back bowl wins against Big East foes West Virginia and Louisville. FREDDIE WAS READY NC State and Connecticut may have only met one time on the gridiron, but the first meeting was definitely a memorable one. In 2003, Wolfpack quarterback Philip Rivers’ senior campaign, the Huskies came to Carter-Finley Stadium on Oct. 11. It was UConn’s second season playing in Divi- sion IA and the year before they joined the Big East. Although the Pack had entered the season ranked in the top 20, the game went down to the wire. After a scoreless first quarter, the two teams went into halftime tied at 10. Chuck Amato’s Wolf- pack squad scored first in the third quarter, when linebacker Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay returned a fumble 48 yards for a score. The Pack jumped up 14 points later in the third when quarterback Philip Rivers hit the tight end for a 25-yard scoring strike. UConn came roaring back in the fourth quarter with two TD strikes to tie the game at 24-24. The Huskies got the ball back with 47 seconds left in the game and drove from their 14 to the 42, when Aughtry-Lindsay intercepted a pass and ran it back 56 yards for the winning score. Aughtry-Lindsay is now an assistant coach at Elon, under head coach Jason Swepson, who was the Pack running backs coach in O’Brien’s first four years at State. SUPER SAFETIES NC State’s pair of super safeties were the team’s leading tacklers in the season opener and are two of the most experienced players on the 2012 Wolfpack squad. Brandan Bishop has 38 career starts, the highest mark on the team, while Earl Wolff has 31, which ties as the second-highest mark. Wolff posted a career-high 18 tackles in the season opening loss to Tennessee, including a pair of stops behind the line of scrimmage. Bishop turned in 10 stops, including one for loss, and also caused a fumble on the goalline to prevent a Volunteer score at the end of the first half. Wolff has made 273 career tackles, the highest mark on the squad, while Bishop has 214 career stops to his credit. Those two totals constitute 48% of the career tackles on the 2012 Wolfpack squad.

NC State is one of just four schools whose football team won a bowl game, men’s basketball team was ranked in the final top-20 and baseball team advanced to a Super Regional in 2011-12.

PACK HEADS NORTHFor the first time since the 1997 season, NC State is playing its first two games away from home. After opening the season against Tennessee in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta, the Wolf-pack is heading to Connecticut to take on the Huskies.

SOMETHING OLD ....In 2012, Wolfpack head coach Tom O’Brien has a luxury that he hasn’t been afforded in previous cam-paigns with the Wolfpack: senior starters. In the season opener, 11 spots on offense and defense were manned by seniors who have starting experience in the past.

That number is almost double the most senior starting experience O’Brien has had during his first five years with the Wolfpack. The number is particularly high on offense, where seven of the 11 starting spots are slated to be filled by seniors with previous starting experience.

Three Pack players ranked among the most experienced returning players in the ACC in terms of career starts heading into the 2012 season: safety Brandan Bishop (5th), OG R.J. Mattes (t9th) and safety Earl Wolff (t9th).

For the 2008 season, there were only two projected starters who were seniors with starting experi-ence. In 2009, there were seven.

Here’s a look at the senior starters in the season opener:

Offense DefensePos Name, Career Starts Pos Name, Career StartsLG R.J. Mattes, 31 RE Brian Slay, 14RT Andrew Wallace, 15 MLB Sterling Lucas, 3C Camden Wentz, 27 FS Brandan Bishop, 34RG Zach Allen, 27 BS Earl Wolff, 31TE Mario Carter, 3 QB Mike Glennon, 14WR Tobais Palmer, 8

..... SOMETHING NEWTen players saw their first collegiate action for the Pack in the opener with Tennessee, including eight red-shirt freshmen and one true freshman. Redshirts Juston Burris (CB), Hakeem Flowers (WR), Carlos Gray (DT), Hakim Jones (S), Dave Mann (DT), Maurice Morgan (WR) and Mike Rose (DT) all saw action from scrimmage, with Burris getting in for a rookie-high 63 snaps. Tight end Benson Browne saw action on special teams, while walk-on Josh Stanley also played in the kicking game.

True freshman Charlie Hegedus was in for 20 snaps at wide receiver, catching one pass for seven yards. Hegedus, whose hometown of Marietta was just 30 miles from the Georgia Dome, played his first collegiate contest on the same field where he played his last prep game. His alma mater, Las-siiter High School, fell in the 5A state semifinals in the Dome in 2011.

SOMETHING BORROWEDThey’re not really borrowed, because we’re not giving them back, but Colorado transfer Forrest West (DE) and JUCO transfers Deylan Buntyn (DT) and Robert Caldwell (LB) also saw action against Ten-nessee. West, who spent the 2011 campaign sitting out but practicing with the Pack, and Buntyn, who joined the team in January, both saw action from scrimmage. Caldwell, who arrived at pre-season camp late, was in on special teams.

That brings the grand total of new players seeing action to 13.

SOMETHING BLUEThere will be a face familiar to the Wolfpack faithful standing on the side of the field with the team in blue on Saturday. Former State linebacker Clayton White is the running backs coach and special teams coordinator for the Huskies. White, who is tied for 11th in school history in career tackles for loss with 33, lettered for the Pack from 1997-2000 under coach Mike O’Cain and Chuck Amato.

A team captain as a senior, White went on to play in the NFL for two seasons for the New York Giants before embarking on a coaching career that has led him to Western Kentucky, Stanford, Western Michigan and Western Carolina.

NC State and its alumni provide $7.3 billion in economic impact annually for North Carolina.

From 2010 to 2012, State’s athletics’ program jumped 52 spots in the Director’s Cup. That two-year jump is the biggest by an ACC school in the history of the Directors’ Cup.

#PICKOFFARTISTWolfpack junior cornerback David Amerson got off to a rough start versus Tennessee, but the return-ing All-American will be looking to get back on track this week at Connecticut.

Amerson’s sophomore interception total was the second-best mark in FBS history and he was the winner of the Jack Tatum Award and and one of three finalists for the Thorpe Award in 2011. A first-team Walter Camp All-American, he tied the ACC single-season INT record with his 11th pick against Clemson on November 19.

Amerson set the school mark against North Carolina on November 5, breaking the record that had been set just a few years before he was born: Art Rooney (of the Pittsburgh Steeler Rooneys) held the record with eight in 1937 and again in 1938!

He returned two picks for scores, also a BCS best, and led the national ranks in INT return yards with 205.

Here’s a look at the all-time FBS leaders in interceptions for a season.

WE LIKE MIKEMike Glennon’s entry into the job of starting collegiate quarterback was not a quiet one. A year ago, nobody mentioned his name without also mentioning his predecessor Russell Wilson, who had moved on to Wisconsin.

Despite the controversy and talk swirling around him, Glennon was unflappable in his first year start-ing under center. Now a fifth-year senior, he silenced all critics by throwing 31 touchdown passes, gaining over 3000 passing yards and completing .625 of his throws in 2011. In fact, only three quarter-backs in ACC history have thrown for more TDs in a season. From the jump, Glennon seemed comfortable in his role as the starting quarterback. By year’s end, he was clicking on all cylinders, completing 66% of his passes for 1,043 yards, throwing 11 TDs to only three interceptions, and posting a 141.35 efficiency rating in the last four games of 2011.

Prior to the 2012 campaign, The Sporting News ranked him as one of the top quarterbacks in the country for the upcoming season and with his ability, experience and knowledge of the State play-book, he should battle for all-conference honors in 2012. His stints at the Manning Passing Academy and at the Elite 11 Camp during the summer have put him solidly in the sights of the national media and NFL scouts.

Here’s a look at where some of Glennon’s numbers rank in the Wolfpack record books:

NO BACKERS BACKWithout question, the linebacking corps took the biggest hit of any unit on the Wolfpack squad fol-lowing the 2011 campaign. Two of the starters from last season, Audie Cole and Terrell Manning, are fighting for position on NFL squads. D.J. Green, who started seven contests before being sidelined by an injury, was declared ineligible in the spring for the entire 2012 season.

The result is that there will be group of not-so-familiar faces at the linebacker spots in 2012. The grand total of snaps from scrimmage played in 2011 by the six players listed listed the opening depth chart

He was injured at the beginning of the 2011 campaign and ended up red-shirting. A veteran of 36 career contests, 459 career snaps and two starts prior to last season, Lucas played 74 snaps and tallied nine tackles in the season opener.

The other starters for the season opener were Brandon Pittman, who played just five snaps from scrimmage last season as a true freshman, and Ricky Dowdy, who had played one snap for his career prior to last Friday.

BOWLED OVERIn the history of college bowl games, no head coach has ever posted a winning percentage better than NC State head coach Tom O’Brien. During his 15 years as a head coach at Boston College and NC State, O’Brien has won .800 of his bowl games, posting an 8-2 postseason slate.

That stat from Sports-Reference.com includes coaches at major schools from 1869 - 2011. Here’s a list of the top 10 in that category:

THE SECOND NOELWolfpack sophomore linebacker Rodman Noel is a talented young player who saw action at strong side linebacker in the season opener. If pedigree is any indication, he will have a long and successful career on the gridiron.

The Pack’s Noel is the second of the three sons of Haitian immigrants Yonel and Dorcina Noel. His older brother, Jim, is a senior at Boston College this season, where he is projected to start at strong safety for the third straight season. While Jim and Rodman have earned their stripes on the gridiron, their younger brother, Nerlens, has gained stardom on the hardwood. One of the most highly-recruited prep basketball players in the country last year, he is currently a freshman for reigning national champion Kentucky.

BEYOND THEIR YEARSJust over a year ago, the Wolfpack’s starting unit at placekicker, punter and long snapper were all attending their high school proms. This season, the trio of Nik Sade, Wil Baumann and Scott Thompson all have a season of collegiate playing time under their belts.

NC State was the only school in the FBS ranks with a true freshman handling placekicking and punting duties in 2011. All three turned in solid, relatively mistake-free performances, despite their lack of experience last year. Add a spring practice to that full season and the unit should be one of the team’s strong points for the upcoming season.Sade kicked 46 extra points last season - the second-best mark in school history. He connected at a .979 clip on extra points and was 11-16 on field goals. He has made 45 consecutive PATs, the sixth-longest streak in school history.

Baumann averaged 37.5 yards on 67 punts last season, but forced 31 fair catches and placed 21 inside the opponent’s 20 yardline. He posted a 41.5 yard average in the season opener.

Thompson was a steady performer at long snapper and a top defender on the return teams.

DEVELOPING LEADERSDuring his 15 years as a head coach, Tom O’Brien has mentored 23 assistant coaches. Seven of those have gone on to become collegiate head coaches.

Three of his former protégés are now head coaches in the Atlantic Coast Conference: Al Golden at Miami, Mike London at Virginia and Frank Spaziani at Boston College. In other words, the Tom O’Brien coaching tree makes up a third of the entire league.

Here’s a look at former assistant coaches under O’Brien who have gone on to the head coaching ranks:

TOBingNobody is doing it at weddings like the Macarena or the Electric Slide and it isn’t quite the national phenomena that TEBOWing was a year ago, but the art of TOBing is something that those in Wolf-pack nation know all about.

TOB is the nickname for Wolfpack head coach Tom O’Brien. The Marine major is known as having a somewhat stoic demeanor on the Wolfpack sideline, usually standing with his arms crossed. Wolfpack fans have nicknamed that stance TOBing. Google it!

PACK IS PICK-YThe Wolfpack set a school record and led the nation with 27 interceptions last season, a tally that tied as the second best mark in ACC history. The best news for the Pack is that 23 of those 27 picks were made by players who are back for 2012. In addition to cornerback David Amerson, who led the nation with 13, safety Brandan Bishop had five, Earl Wolff had three while Darryl Cato-Bishop and C.J. Wilson each had one.

The only players with picks who will not compete this season are linebackers Terrell Manning and D.J. Green. Manning, who pulled down three INTs last year, declared early for the draft, while Green, who had one, is ineligible.

MOVING MATTESR.J. Mattes gets around. The senior offensive lineman started at left guard in the season opener with Tennessee - the fourth different OL position of his career. And his starts haven’t been in a fill-in capacity due to injury or the like, but have been for multiple games.

Mattes started 12 games last season at left tackle. In 2010, he came back from injury to start 10 games at right tackle. As a redshirt freshman in 2009, he started eight games at right guard before suffering a season-ending injury.

Research has uncovered a couple of BCS players - Alabama’s Barrett Jones (RG, LT, C) and Wake Forest’s Garrick Williams (C, LG, RG) - who will be starting at their third position on the OL in 2012,

Tradition + Transformation

Celebrate the past. Create the future.

North Carolina State University was founded in 1887 to fulfill the land-grant university mission: opening the doors of higher education to the citizens of North Carolina. Since then, NC State has grown into one of the nation’s top research institutions, becoming an engine for educational innovation and economic growth. Throughout 125 years of groundbreaking work in fields ranging from engineering to economics, soil science to social work, we’ve not only changed lives; we’ve trans-formed the world.

but none that will be starting their fourth.

RISING STOCK-ERObviously, the Wolfpack is set at the starting quarterback position. There is some concern in some quarters about what would happen if starting signal caller Mike Glennon were injured or had to miss snaps for any other reason.

Glennon’s projected backup for 2012, Tyler Brosius, left school this summer, leaving true freshman Manny Stocker as the No. 2 at quarterback. Tom O’Brien calls Stocker a ‘half-a-redshirt’ freshman, since he decided to graduate from high school early and has been at State since January.

Stocker, who just attended his senior prom in June and is still in braces, went through spring prac-tice with the team. He passed for almost 2,000 yards as a senior at Coatesville Area High School in Pennsylvania, throwing for 20 scores and running for 10 more.

SAME OLD LINEWolfpack fans might get a feeling of deja vu when they watch the 2012 version of the offensive line. All five projected starters on the OL have started games during their careers, while four plus a pro-jected backup have been season-long starters. The players returning on the line have combined to start 112 games in their careers, three are redshirt seniors and one is a true senior.

Here are some notes on the experience of the offensive line:√ The last time that any one other than senior Zach Allen started at right guard and senior Cam

Wentz started at center was November 28, 2009. That duo has started every game of the past two seasons at their respective positions.

√ Senior R.J. Mattes has started 31 contests at four different positions - 12 at right tackle, eight at left guard, 10 at left tackle and one at left guard.

√ Andrew Wallace started every game of the 2010 regular season at right guard (and two in 2009) before suffering a knee injury in practice for the Champs Sports Bowl. Last season he played in just two games for a total of eight snaps as he continued to recover. He started at right tackle in the opener.

√ Although junior Rob Crisp is the youngest member of the starting five on the offensive line, he is the only player on the line who started a game as a true freshman. Crisp got the nod in the season opener of 2010 - his first collegiate contest at left tackle, where he also started last week.

√ Backup right guard Duran Christophe also has starting experience - he’s gotten the nod in 13 career games, including 12 last season at left guard

√ The five starters on the OL have combined for 8,053 snaps from scrimmage in their careers.

FULL AT HALF(BACK)A position of depth for the ‘12 Pack is the halfback spot, with talent four and five deep. The most experienced returnee is senior James Washington, who had started 17 straight games at the position over the past two seasons prior to the season opener. Washington rushed for 897 yards last season, the highest total for a Pack player since T.A. McLendon gained 1,101 yards in 2002. He has 77 career receptions, the fourth-highest mark among returning BCS players.

NC State has boasted a higher number of ACC postgraduate scholars than any other league school.

Redshirt sophomore Tony Creecy saw increased action over the second half of 2011, tallying over 100 all-purpose yards off the bench in the last game of the regular season vs. Maryland. He has also emerged as one of the Pack’s top performers in the weight room and got the starting nod in the opener.

Mustafa Greene, now a redshirt sophomore, made a long-awaited return to the field in the opener. Greene was the team’s leading rusher in 2010, even though he came off the bench in all but one contest, rushing for 597 yards and catching 30 passes for another 272 yards. Greene suffered a foot injury in spring practice of 2011 and missed the entire 2011 campaign. He missed most of spring drills this year and part of preseason camp as he got his academics in order, but ended up leading the team in rushing in the opener, despite being the third back in the game.

AMONG THE ELITENC State head coach Tom O’Brien is in some elite company, as he enters the 2012 season ranked 19th among the winningest active coaches in the BCS ranks. In his 16th campaign as a head coach, O’Brien posts a career record of 108-75. Eleven of his 15 teams have advanced to postseason bowls.

Only 27 of the 120 coaches in the BCS have posted at least 100 career wins. Here ‘s a list of the winningest coaches in the nation heading into 2012:

NO RETURNSMuch has been said about the Pack’s lack of experience at the wide re-ceiver and linebacker positions heading into 2012, but one huge gap to be filled is at the kickoff and punt return spots.

T.J. Graham, now with the Buffalo Bills, ended his career as the ACC’s all-time leader in kick return yards with 3,153 for his career, while his 628 yards on punt returns was the fifth-highest mark in school history.

Those spots may be manned by committee in 2012, with Tobais Palmer, David Amerson, , Rashard Smith et al performing the duties. Smith re-turned two punts last season, while Palmer had three KORs. In the opener, Palmer returned three kickoffs, while Smith had two punt returns.

STATE TO INDUCT FIRST HALL OF FAME CLASSNC State has elected its inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame Class and the induction ceremonies will be held on Friday, Oct. 5 in Reynolds Coliseum. Three former football players were elected to the class of 10: QB Roman Gabriel, C Jim Ritcher and RB Ted Brown.

WOLFPACK UNLIMITEDJust days after Deborah A. Yow was introduced as NC State’s Director of Athletics in June of 2010, the annual Directors’ Cup standings were re-leased. In that metric, which recognizes all-sports success in collegiate athletics, NC State was ranked 89th - an all-time low. Nine Pack teams scored points in the competition and only one was ranked in the top 25.

When the 2012 standings were announced in June of 2012, the Wolfpack stood at 37th - it’s highest mark in six years and a jump of 52 spots in just two years. That two-year jump is the biggest by an ACC school in the his-tory of the Director’s Cup.

CHAMPIONS IN THE CLASSROOM. CHAMPIONS IN THE COMMUNITY. CHAMPIONS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD.When Tom O’Brien was named Wolfpack head coach in December of 2006, he vowed to field a program whose goal was to become champions in three areas: the classroom, the community and the football field. He and his staff use this mantra in recruiting and each member of the Wolfpack squad knows that this is what they strive for - individually and as a team.

In the Classroom: 79 players have graduated in the last nine ceremonies, including a high of nine in the spring of 2012. Three players were named to the Academic All-ACC squad last year (Mike Glennon, Mikel Overgaard, McKay Frandsen) in 2011 and there are four post-graduates on the 2012 squad. The team’s single-year APR for 2011-12 is going to be the highest in school history.

In the Community: The Wolfpack has raised over $200,000 for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program and more than $100,000 for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and scholarship endowment. O’Brien is on the Board of Directors for Toys for Tots and the team has embraced that charity, going on an an-nual shopping spree to buy toys with fan donations every December. The Pack has also worked with Habitat for Humanity, made numerous trips to visit the Wounded Warriors at Camp LeJeune, worked with tornado cleanup in downtown Raleigh and makes frequent appearances at schools and after-school programs.

On the Football Field: In 2010, the Wolfpack posted the second-highest win total in school history. Three of O’Brien’s five squads have earned post-season bowl bids and NC State is one of just 12 teams nationally that have won bowl games the past two seasons. The Pack is ranked 25th in the preseason by Sports Illustrated.

According to the Wall Street Journal, NC State ranks 19th nationally in preparing graduates for employment.
