1A 4-year-old boy was killed andtwo men were injured Sundayevening during a playgroundshootout in the Morrisania sec-tion of the Bronx.

The 4-year-old victim, LloydMorgan, was playing on theplayground next to the ForestHouses basketball court — lo-cated within a public housingcomplex near the corner of

East 165th Street and TintonAvenue — when a stray bulletstruck him in the head around9:36 p.m., according to policeand Bronx Assemblyman EricA. Stevenson.

Lloyd was pronounced deadupon his arrival at nearby Lin-coln Hospital.

A 27-year-old man was like-wise transported to LincolnHospital with a gunshotwound to the abdomen, and a21-year-old man went to St.Barnabas Hospital, where hewas treated for a gunshotwound to the arm. Both menare listed in stable condition, police say.

The incident reportedly oc-curred following the “First An-nual Ghetto Angels BasketballTournament,” which, in a cruelbit of irony, was part of a me-morial for a girl stabbed todeath in that neighborhoodlast year.

Neighbors at the apartmentbuilding where Lloyd livederected a makeshift shrine tothe murdered child, placingcandles, teddy bears and a bas-ketball out on the sidewalk yes-terday.

“When he comes outside, they have him here on his bikeor his ball,” Lloyd’s neighbor,Melody Nelson, told Metro, ofthe boy. “That’s all he did wasplay.”

She described Lloyd as wellbehaved, and said the boys par-

ents were quiet and hard-work-ing.

“They’re trying to hang inthere,” Nelson said, whenasked how the parents wereholding up. Police have not yetmade any arrests.

Candles stand in the spot where Lloyd Morgan was killed as his blood is washed off the pavement near the Forest Houses complex in the Morrisania section of the Bronx.

Murder makes somerethink stop-and-friskAssemblyman Eric A. Steven-son, who represents theBronx neighborhood whereLloyd was slain, was anotherpolitician to speak out yester-day, declaring that he wouldrethink his objections to theNYPD’s controversial stop-and-frisk program.

“If stop-and-frisk can pre-vent these types of crimes, maybe we should have it,”said Stevenson, who plannedan anti-violence rally to takeplace at 5 p.m. yesterday atthe Forest Houses basketball

court where Lloyd was shot.Nonetheless, a man who

identified himself as Lloyd’sgodfather said he didn’t thinkstop-and-frisk would have pre-vented the shootout.

“Stop-and-frisk is aimed atthe wrong people,” said thegodfather, who declined togive his name.

“It’s aimed at the regularpeople that are walking downthe block, going to the store. Ihave been stopped severaltimes, no weapons,” he said.

METRO

The slaying of Lloyd, alongwith the recent massacre in aColorado movie theater, hasprompted Mayor MichaelBloomberg and a number ofother city officials to continueto speak out on gun violence.

“Four years old, lifesnuffed out,” Bloomberg saidyesterday at a pressconference. “There’s not a lotelse to say. We all know thescourge of guns on ourstreets, and we have to getthem off.”

For at least the third time

in two days, Bloomberg alsopublicly criticized BarackObama and Mitt Romney fornot standing up more forciblyagainst illegal guns and gunloopholes.

“During the next presiden-tial term, there will be 48,000Americans killed with illegalguns,” the mayor said. “Itseems to me notunreasonable that whoeverwants to be president shouldtell us what they’re going todo about it before we go tothe ballot box.” METRO/JG

News in briefMIT study: JFK a hot spotfor spreading of diseaseJohn F. Kennedy airport is No.1 — but not in a good way. Anew study by MassachusettsInstitute of Technology listsJFK as the most likely airportin the nation when it comes tospreading extremely conta-gious diseases like SARS or theH1N1 flu virus.

The study, released yester-day by MIT’s Civil and Environ-mental Engineering Depart-ment, looked at how likely the40 largest U.S. airports are tospread a contagious disease.Surprisingly, airports that han-dled the most daily flights didnot fall highest on the list.

While Hartsfield-JacksonInternational Airport in At-lanta has the highest frequen-cy of flights, JFK still tops thelist in terms of risky disease-spreading factors. JFK is a highrisk due to its connectivity toother airports worldwide, andits location in a large metro-

politan area, the report found.Honolulu International Air-

port in Hawaii is comparative-ly tiny, handling about a thirdas much traffic as JFK, but theairport still ranked third onMIT’s list for disease-spreadingcapabilities. That’s because ofits connections to other large,well-connected cities, accord-ing to the report.

In addition to air and peo-ple traffic that flow throughflying hubs each day, re-searchers also looked at geo-graphical location and connec-tivity to determine how fast adisease originating in each air-port’s home city would spreadover a period of 15 days.

MIT energy studies profes-sor Ruben Juanes said the re-sults could have huge implica-tions for combating publichealth crises such as the 2009H1N1 flu pandemic and the2003 SARS outbreak.

As an international hub, diseases could be spread throughJFK quickly and efficiently, the report found.

Epic rebuilding liesahead for Penn State

NCAA president Mark Emmert, right, speaks as Ed Ray, chairman of the NCAA’s executive committee, looks on during a press to announce sanctions against Penn State University’s football.

The governing body of U.S.college sports fined PennState University $60 millionand voided its football victo-ries for the past 14 seasons inan unprecedented rebuke forthe school’s failure to stopcoach Jerry Sandusky’s sexualabuse of children.

NCAA President Mark Em-mert said the school had put“hero worship and winning atall costs” ahead of integrity, honesty and responsibility.

Penn State was not giventhe so-called “death penalty”that could have suspendedits football program but itspunishment was very bymany as potentially evenworse in the longterm.

The punishment, an-nounced by the National Col-lege Athletic Association at anews conference in Indi-anapolis, was unprecedented

for its swiftness and breadth. It was the latest blow to aninstitution still reeling fromSandusky’s conviction lastmonth on child molestationcharges.

The case was anotherblotch on the diminishinglegacy of Paterno, who untilyesterday’s action had heldthe record for victoriesamong big-time U.S. collegefootball coaches in a careerthat spanned more than 40seasons. Paterno lost that sta-tus since the NCAA’s punish-ment includes voiding theNittany Lions’ victories be-tween 1998 and 2011.

Emmert said the NCAAchose not to levy the so-called “death penalty” be-cause it would have harmedindividuals with no role inthe Sandusky scandal.REUTERS

News in brief Massacre suspect hasfirst court appearance

The man accused of killing adozen people in a Coloradomovie theater during a show-ing of the new Batman filmgave little away in his firstcourt appearance yesterday, sitting silently in a red jail-house jumpsuit with his hairdyed bright red.

James Eagan Holmes, 24,appeared groggy and emotion-less during the hearing, look-ing ahead and occasionallyclosing his eyes. He was shack-led at the wrists and ankles.

Members of the victim’sfamilies and others who werein the cinema looked on.McKayla Hicks was amongthem. She was seated in themovie theater next door tothe one where the killings oc-curred when a bullet hit herchin.

“Once he walked into theroom, it just made everythinga lot harder,” she told CNN.

“He just looks like a pathet-ic freak,” she said. “I just wanthim put away forever.”

Several times, when Dis-trict Judge William Sylvesterasked Holmes a question, oneof his attorneys answered.

The former neurosciencestudent also left his apartmentbooby-trapped with explosivesthat police said could have de-stroyed the apartment com-plex. Police say they are stillsearching for a motive for thecrime, which baffled fellowstudents and acquaintances. They described him as a quiethigh-achiever whose past gavelittle inkling that anythingwas amiss.

Arapahoe County DistrictAttorney Carol Chamberssaid she would consult withthe victims and families ofthe dead before making a de-cision on seeking the deathpenalty. REUTERS/METRO

A Note Regarding the Up To Priceslisted in this Ad

The condition and rarity of an item determines its price. If an item is in excellent condition and very rare it might be worth the up to price, or even more. However, if an item is in poor condition, the value will be lower. For example, a 1927 S Quarter could be worth $7,000 in new condition or less than $20 in poor condition.

The up to price reflects items of exceptional quality and

rarity. Although it is unlikely you will have these items

2Noticeably missing from Sun-day night’s Teen Choice Awardswas teen queen Miley Cyrus, who won in the “Choice Hot-tie” and “Choice Fashion Icon”categories despite being a no-show.

Cyrus spent the evening inPhiladelphia, where she’s beenhanging out as her fiance, actorLiam Hemsworth, shoots “Para-noia.” So why didn’t she make aquick trip back to L.A.? It seemsCyrus might have a little para-noia of her own: She’s report-edly not happy with theamount of time Hemsworthhas been spending with his“Empire State” co-star, EmmaRoberts.

“Not only did she tell Liam ithad to stop, she even confront-ed Emma,” a source tellsPerezhilton.com. “Miley moreor less said, ‘Hands off myman!’ Emma couldn’t care lesswhat Miley thinks. She makesfun of Miley behind her back, saying she’s just a washed-uptween star. Emma feels she hasnothing to lose, so she’s push-ing it as far as she can withLiam.”

We like your spunk, Emma. But at this point, Miley’s onepair of tattered pink sweat-pants away from being a Phillygirl — back away slowly, andkeep your eyes on those acrylicnails.

Mariah Carey joins‘American Idol’Kevin Reilly, Fox President of En-tertainment, opened his execu-tive session in front of journalistsat the Television Critics Associa-tion press tour in Beverly Hills,Calif., yesterday by confirmingMariah Carey will be a newjudge on “American Idol.” Reillyaddressed the speculation head-

on by saying, “I really can’t con-firm anything except for onething: We closed a deal very, veryrecently.” To prove just howrecently the contract had beensigned, Reilly pulled out his cellphone and began making aphone call while dropping hintsas to who they signed. After acouple technical difficulties, Reillyaddressed his caller: “Hi Mariah, how are you?” When put onspeakerphone, Carey apologizedfor not being at the press tour inperson, but assured critics she is“so excited to be on ‘Idol’” and“can’t wait to get started.”

Minka Kelly sextape being shoppedMinka Kelly is the latest actressto be plagued by a possible sextape scandal, as a 30-minutetape of Kelly getting intimatewith an ex-boyfriend is reported-ly being offered to the highestbidder, according to TMZ. Thevideo is said to be shot in a semi-professional manner, and thewebsite claims that it’s clear Kel-ly knows she’s being filmed. Some question if Kelly is actuallyof age in the video, as she is re-portedly seen singing along with

and dancing to two songs fromBrandy’s “Never Say Never”album, which was released 16days before the actress’ 18thbirthday.

Take it off, Diaz!Cameron Diaz isn’t going to let alittle rain ruin a good time. Theactress reportedly got drenchedon her way to a party at NewYork’s Chelsea Market last week, according to People magazine.Undaunted, Diaz “took her shirtoff at one point to wring out herdrenched top,” a source says.

Talking points

Kelly

Can’t fazeCharlize TheronAt this point in her career,Charlize Theron is a pro at get-

ting her hands dirty on cam-era. When asked by W Maga-zine if death scenes or sexscenes are more difficult, theactress answered casually, “Itdepends on who you’re doing

the sex scene with. I don’thave issues being naked. Thatsounds very slutty. What Imean is, I’m not hung up onmy body.”

Obviously, we’re now play-

ing the “Screw, marry, kill”game with her formeronscreen partners. Our mostdifficult lineup: Johnny Depp,Michael Fassbender, BenAffleck.

Won’tsomeonethink of thebeautifulchildren?Miranda Kerr and OrlandoBloom have been spottedwithout their weddingrings on, promptingFamous magazine toreport that their marriage“might be in trouble.”

“She’s had a lot on herplate — it could be thatsomewhere along the wayher relationship with Or-lando may have slipped be-tween the cracks,” says asource who has obviouslynever set eyes on OrlandoBloom.

A rep for the coupleclaims, naturally, that“there is absolutely notruth in the story.”

Nostalgia kicked off the secondday of the Television CriticsPress tour in Beverly Hills,Calif., on Sunday, when PBS pre-sented a panel for “DanielTiger’s Neighborhood,” the firstTV series from The Fred RogersCompany since the beloved “Mr.Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

Daniel Tiger is the sweater-wearing 4-year-old son of DanielStripe Tiger, Fred Rogers’ firstpuppet from the original series. In the new animated series, theresidents of the Neighborhoodof Make-Believe are all grownup with kids of their own, wholearn lessons on developmentalissues (think: separation anxi-ety, disappointment and bed-time routines).

“This is designed to be yourfirst television experience as avery young child. It carries thelegacy of Fred Rogers in somany ways, but it’s not neces-sary to enjoy this to know any-thing about Fred and hisNeighborhood of Make-Be-lieve,” said executive producer

Kevin Morrison. At the same time, parents

who grew up calling Mr. Rogerstheir neighbor will be happy toknow “there’s little nods oflove throughout the episodes,”explains executive producerAngela Santomero. “If you area big fan of Fred like I was, you’ll see his little redsweaters.”

Inspiring tales of humanresolution set the stage for“Half the Sky,” the documen-tary based on the best-sellingbook by Nicholas Kristof andSheryl WuDunn about oppres-sion of women and girls. Also

on the panel were actressesMeg Ryan, Diane Lane andAmerica Ferrera, who traveledwith the journalists to help tellthe stories of those around theworld fighting for women’srights.

Maro Chermayeff, execu-tive producer and director of“Half the Sky,” said celebritieswere brought into the projectto “help the audience find away in” to the upsetting sto-ries of trafficking and mutila-tion. “If you give people achance and you find some newways for them to come tosome of the subject matter, they will come and they’ll re-spond,” she said.

Ryan said while the spot-light is shining on a celebrity,“you can just saddle up next tosomething smart and impor-tant and that will get some at-tention.”

Speaking of celebrity: Star-making legend David Geffensat on a panel for the “Ameri-can Experience” film docu-

menting his career in musicand film, “Inventing David Gef-fen.” He’d been flown in fromSardinia for the event, andseemed in a hurry to get back— his answers to critics’ ques-tions were short and not veryquotable. Not until he wasasked about the Carly Simon

song “You’re So Vain,” that is,and how he had been fingeredas the subject of the tune.

“No, no. That’s simply nottrue,” he said. “Not to say I’mnot vain, but I’m not her vain.”

When it is OK to keep a secretfrom the people closest to you?In her latest novel, “Where WeBelong,” Emily Giffin exploreswhat happens when deep se-crets are ultimately revealed.

Just as in her previous nov-els “Something Borrowed” and“Baby Proof,” Giffin’s latest fo-cuses on a relationships in atrying time. In this case, it’s the

story of Marian Caldwell, a suc-cessful television producer liv-ing in New York who is forcedto face her past when 18-year-old Kirby Rose shows up at herdoorstep. We spoke to Giffinabout her strong female charac-ters and her feelings aboutchick lit.

This is your only novel that istold from the perspective of ateenager. Did this present achallenge for you while writing? It was difficult at first to findKirby’s voice, but once I did, itwas really quite easy for me totell her story. In some ways, Icould relate to her more thanthe adults in the book. She wasmy favorite character. I recently read an interview inwhich you said you’ve neverliked being classified under theterm “chick lit.” How would youdescribe your work instead? It’s not that I don’t like themoniker — and I’m in favor ofany label that encourages peo-ple to read or helps them findthe kind of books they will en-

joy. It’s just that I don’t thinkit’s entirely accurate, especiallyfor my last few novels. There isnothing about “Heart of theMatter” or “Where We Belong”that conjures chick lit. They aremore straight women’s fiction— books about exploring rela-tionships and complicatedemotional terrain — andfrankly I think men would real-ly enjoy them if they can get be-yond the pretty covers. I amvery fair to my male charactersand try to make them as realis-tic as my female characters. And there is no man-bashing inmy books. What’s next for you?I’m gearing up for my book

launch and tour that begins onJuly 24. It’s one of the things Ilove about my career. There arewhole months and zones of al-most solitary confinementwhen I’m writing. Then I get toemerge and work with my pub-licity team, interact with themedia and, most important, meet my readers. When thedust settles in early September,I will begin my next novel. I’malso in talks to turn “Where WeBelong” into a television show.I just hope they find someonereally hot to play Conrad. I’msort of obsessed with him!

Your children’s home-work and tests help pre-pare them for the worldoutside of school. For

now, though, good grades arethe goal. Boston-based pediatri-cian Dr. Claudia Gold, author of“Keeping Your Child in Mind:Overcoming Defiance,Tantrums, and Other EverydayBehavior Problems by Seeingthe World through Your Child’sEyes,” provides tips to help you

guide the students in your lifethrough their academic pur-suits.

HomeworkCreate a schedule conducive

to success. “For some, it worksbest if they do [homework] rightaway. Others need a break forphysical activity or relaxation. Ingeneral, children should havecontrol over when they do theirhomework in a way that is devel-opmentally appropriate.”

Don’t take over your child’sassignments. “Most of the prob-lems that occur involve conflictbetween the parent and thechild.”

Refuel right before tacklingassignments. “Fruit, cereal or asandwich are good choices.”

Time managementAllow for breaks. “Some kids,

particularly those with problems

of self-regulation, may need totake regular breaks from home-work and studying to engage incalming self-regulating activitiessuch as walking, running, art ormusic.”

Be reasonable. Keep in mind

that all students learn at differ-ent rates so some may needmore time than others. “Timemanagement has to be tailoredto the characteristics of thechild. It has to be individualizedto the child’s particular needs.”

StudyingLimit Internet capabilities if

needed. “At some schools, theyturn off access to Facebook dur-ing study hall hours. Somethinglike that is useful around study-ing.”

Let failures be a learningexperience. “In terms of lettingkids take charge, middle schoolis a really good place to followthat rule. Then you can see whatthe problems are and you can fixthem before they get to highschool.”

A+ studying and test-taking tips

Test-taking

Have them prepare to adapt.“In general, kids do not havecontrol over the environmentand the way tests are given, and they need to learn how toaccommodate. If the kid doeshave attention problems ordoes have particular issues, there need to be accommoda-tions in place for that child.”Prep their bodies. “Gettingsufficient sleep and having nu-tritious food are good prepa-rations for a test.”

NEW TREATMENT AVAILABLE! Aerolase Laser

Nail Fungus Treatment

We checked in with Dr. AndrewAdesman, who heads the De-velopmental and Behavioral Pe-diatrics department of Chil-dren’s Medical Center in NewHyde Park, N.Y., to give us thelowdown on attention disor-ders and those oft-usedacronyms, ADD and ADHD.

What’s the difference betweenADD and ADHD? There’s a confusing tendency torefer to non-hyperactive atten-tion deficit disorder as ADD todifferentiate it from the typethat also includes hyperactivity. But really ADHD is the umbrel-la term for the entire disorder. What are treatment options? Treatment is mostly about in-tervention and management:intervention in the classroomand home settings, and alsomedical intervention and man-agement of behavior and ac-tions. At home, the parent anda psychologist work together to

educate the parent on how toform effective positive conse-quences for good behavior andnegative ones for bad. The childhas to be motivated to adapt[his or her] behavior. Medica-tion is tricky. Some see it as alast resort and others see it aspart of an initial treatmentplan. Are there any new treatments

people are talking about? The essential fatty acids andfish oils seem to be somewhateffective. But it might not besufficient. Neurofeedback orEEG biofeedback is a controver-sial treatment because it’s ex-pensive and the research ismixed. But it does seem towork and there are those whoadvocate it as effective.

Distraction — or something more? All about ADHD

Q&A

How can you tell if a child isjust a normal, bouncy kid or ifhe or she has ADHD?

Diagnosis is a challenge. Chil-dren with ADHD don’t differ

that much from children whodon’t have it, [except in] theseverity and frequency ofbeing distracted. If it’s signifi-cant and ... interfering with achild’s function, then it’s likelyADHD. If a child is strugglingin school it can be ADD, but itisn’t always. There are no

blood tests, no neurologicaltests. We’re relying on clinicalhistory from families andteachers. Diagnosis needs tobe a careful study of the childand the overall situation.

LINDA [email protected]

Boys are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls, the CDC says.

Is fallen statue theend of the story? While I agree with thedecision not to leave the JoePaterno sculpture as it was, they could do something morecreative to remember thevictims of his negligence. Ipropose keeping the sculpturebut commissioning anaddition: the figure of anabused child lying at his feet. That way, he’d now beportrayed leading his teamforward while looking straightahead — and ignoring what’sright under his nose.ERIC HAMELL, VIA E-MAIL

The outrage about the PennState scandal is well deserved. Those who applaud thepenalties placed on theuniversity are correct indoing so. Those who stillpraise Paterno are theproblem in our world,

putting sports above humandignity and putting obsceneprofits above the suffering ofchildren. But this scandalpales in comparison to theabuse hidden by the Catholicchurch. “Dealing” with itinternally? Disgraceful! Toomany people pay moreattention to the Super Bowl,World Series, etc. than towhat really matters: humansuffering. ROBERT LA ROSA, WHITESTONE, N.Y.

You mean to tell me that in25 years, nobody in the NCAAever heard anything aboutJerry Sandusky being apedophile — that he wasusing his foundation to getclose to young boys? As far asI’m concerned, they’re allpart of the same protectivenetwork; and yet the NCAAgets to act like one of the

victims here — the innocentbearers of justice andpunishment. Don’t be fooled— they all knew. This show isthe PR of damage control. This is what happens whenyou let a stupid institutionlike football become all-powerful.MICHAEL CHIMENTI, OAKLAND GARDENS, N.Y.

Hindsight aids newoutlook on old act Mr. Gottlieb, in a nutshell therepeal of the Glass-SteagallAct allowed major banks touse huge funds, previouslyforced to be kept in safe low-risk, low-return investments, for investing in far riskiersecurities. In the late ’90s,such liberation was hailed asa positive move, though inthe hindsight it proved to be

reckless. If that was notderegulation, I don’t knowwhat is. I’m also questioningMetro’s publishing Mr.Gottlieb’s letter of more than200 words, more than doublethe limit. Is there a “slight”chance of a bias here? Wouldyou publish a pro-Bush letterof a comparable length?GAROLD MINKIN, NEW YORK

Disarming guncontrol argument is short-sightedFollowing the senselessAurora massacre, I heardsomeone dismiss therenewed demands for moregun control by positing thathad the madman not beenable to access the weapons heused, he would have foundsome other method ofcommitting his crimes. Wherever you go onvacation this sum-mer, there will bestreet food. In many

countries, that doesn’t mean ahot dog on a bun, but a deli-cious celebration of culinaryheritage. In honor of thosemouth-watering meals abroad, the members and editors ofVirtualtourist.com have com-piled a list of the “Top Ten BestStreet Food Cities.”

SingaporeThe undisputed up-and-comingspot for street food in South-east Asia is Singapore, thoughstreet food already has a longhistory in the city. In the 1950sand ’60s, “street hawking” wasan incredibly popular trade;however, the abundance ofstreet hawkers eventually cre-ated sanitation issues. In 1968and 1969, all street hawkerswere forced to register, and forthe next 15 years the govern-ment relocated hawkers to“hawker centers.” These cen-ters can be described as a hy-brid of a food court and an or-ganized market. Singapore’scuisine is reflective of its inter-esting position in SoutheastAsia. The city’s specialties in-

clude Hainanese Chicken Rice, comprised of steamed chickenwith a jelly-like layer with rice, cucumbers, chilies and pound-ed ginger; chili crabs, whichcome slathered in a garlickyand fiery paste; laksa, a spicyPeranakan (Chinese and Malay-sian) noodle soup; and satay, skewers of marinated meatsserved with a peanut sauce.

Penang, MalaysiaOne of the surprising aspects inresearching this article wasmembers’ overwhelming en-thusiasm for Penang, a smallstate and island on the north-west coast of PeninsularMalaysia. Members credited thethree large ethnic groups inPenang (Malay, Chinese and In-dian) as creating both a greatvariety in the street food, butalso a multicultural influenceon the cuisine as a whole. Onemember even stated he hadbetter Indian food in Malaysiathan he had in India! Char koayteow (stir-fried rice noodles),Assam laksa (a tart, hot andsour fish soup), roti (Indian-in-fluenced flatbread) and sataysof beef, chicken or even porkare all suggested. REUTERS

Meet theelite streetmeat cities

Bangkok,ThailandFew places in the world, if any,are as synonymous with streetfood as Thailand. For the vari-ety of locations and abundanceof options, we selected Bang-kok as our No. 1 spot for streetfood. Bangkok is notable forboth its variety of offerings andthe city’s abundance of streethawkers. VirtualTourist mem-bers recommended Soi

Rambuttri, a U-shaped lane offof Khao San Road and near WatChana Songkhram, as a greatspot in the old district. GreenPapaya salad bruised on a stonepestle, mango sticky rice, padThai (stir-fried noodles withegg, fish sauce, tamarind juice, red chili pepper and a combina-tion of meat, garnished withcrushed peanuts and lime), andchicken with green curry are allsome of the Thai specialties ourmembers mentioned finding inBangkok.

The saga is over. Rick Nash is aRanger.

General manager GlenSather acquired Nash, a third-round pick and minor leaguedefenseman Steven Delislefrom Columbus for BrandonDubinsky, Artem Anisimov,Tim Erixon and a 2013 first-round pick yesterday.

“He’ll help us immensely,”Sather said in a late afternoonconference call. “This qualityhockey player doesn’t comealong very often. [It was a] dealwe couldn’t turn down.”

The left wing has scored289 goals in 674 NHL games, including a high of 41 in 2003-04. He adds elite-level goalscoring to a team that strug-gled to score in the playoffs. The lack of offense was ex-posed in the six-game seriesloss to the Devils in the East-ern Conference final.

“Sometimes when youthink it’s a really good piece, but he doesn’t exactly fit in allthe little things you do, you canteach him those things if he re-ally brings you somethingelse,” head coach John Tortorel-la said on breakup day whenasked about the Rangers’ needto add skill. “We [had] to workextremely hard to score goals.”

Sather believes Nash will fit

in seamlessly.“[Nash] has a track record of

being an excellent hockey play-er. Everyone in our organiza-tion was after this guy,” Sathersaid, adding: “Nash doesn’tbreak up the core of the hock-ey club.”

The 28-year-old Nash issigned through the 2017-18 sea-

son with a $7.8 million cap hit.His contract includes a no-movement clause that expiresfollowing the 2014-15 season, and a no-trade clause that con-cludes at the end of the 2017-18season.

The Yankees may not have got-ten much better, but they cer-tainly got a huge jolt of starpower yesterday afternoon.

YES Network’s Jack Currybroke the news that the Yan-kees acquired Japanese andMLB legend Ichiro Suzuki ofthe Mariners just a few hoursbefore the two teams werescheduled to face off in Seattle. The team confirmed the dealsoon after.

The Yankees will send pitch-ers D.J. Mitchell and Danny Far-quhar in return for the outfield-er. New York will also receivecash considerations as Ichiro ismaking $17 million this season.Curry reports the Yankees willpay about $2.2 million of the re-maining money. He'll be a freeagent after this season.

“I am overcome with feel-ings when I think of the times Ispent with the fans here,” Suzu-ki told Mariners reporters

through a translator. Ichiro is a 10-time All-Star —

he made the team every year inthe majors except for the lasttwo — but he is struggling thisyear. He is batting just .261

with a .288 on-base percentageand 49 runs scored. He finishedlast year batting .272, far andaway the lowest of his MLB ca-reer and the only time he’s bat-ted under .300. METRO
