SHARK The American International School of Rotterdam From the Director “Lots of other great things going on here at AISR and you can peer into school life on a daily basis. If you havenʼt already done so, please like us on Facebook.” Happy Friday everyone! It’s been busy at AISR - our one-to-one laptop program is officially underway and students are all making use of their new machines. Our network is feeling the strain of the added traffic, but our ICT department is working hard to tweak our current structures to ensure we are getting the most out of our bandwidth. And speaking of technology, work on our new website is almost complete. The developers have told us that work will be completed and we can expect to launch before the end of the month. We are very excited about this - the website will have a much better flow and a newsfeed that works in a similar way to Facebook with information on what’s happening at school on the main page. We hope that you will like the new look and feel of the website. Please stay tuned. Tomorrow the Sharks are on their way to Antwerp to test the water in the first games of the season. Thanks to Mr. Zeilstra and all the coaches for getting our athletes prepared for the season. We wish all our athletes the best of luck - have a great time. Go Sharks! Secondary Principal’s Message

“Communication to parents should be as consistent, concise and as easy to find as possible.”

We live in an age of explosive information growth, which can be a blessing and a curse. Too little communication creates anxiety, while too much communication results in overload, distraction, and overlooked data. Shared community understandings about communication are vital to building positive relationships and reducing misunderstanding and misconceptions. Communication to parents should be as consistent, concise and as easy to find as possible.

The way of basic communication used at Middle and High School is PowerSchool (PS), for which you have received the login information, and Google Calendar (GC), which the students can log into. All homework assignments are posted on GC and grades are recorded in PS. Teachers will ensure there is an overall, general comment for each student mid-way through each quarter (like progress reports).

Traditionally, the 3rd week in September, AISR’s middle and high school are learning outside the classrooms. For a week the students and some of their teachers will be traveling to various destinations. The programs are all aimed at bonding and tie in to several topics from their curriculum.

6th graders are traveling to Terschelling, an island north of Friesland. This trip will offer bike riding, marine biology, Dutch culture and a lot of beach time fun.

7 and 8 grade will have a Flanders Tour. This trip starts in the delta of Zeeland and will stop at the historic town of Bruges. Dutch water works, Flemish history, The Great War and culture are the main topics.

9 and 10 grade make a trip to Normandy where the history of World War II and the French culture are the main topics.

11 graders will visit London. A workshop at the Globe Theater is the main topic, but also the main attractions of this great city will be explored.

The senior class has chosen Portugal as destination for their trip. They will learn about Portuguese culture, its natural beauty and how it is to organize your own trip.

I wish all Middle and High School Students and their chaperones an interesting trip.
