shopping

Shopping in Wanganui is full of surprises. Within the commercial centre, boutique shops as well as major retail chains are to be found in the numerous buildings of historic interest. Victoria Avenue reflects the city’s heritage with gaslights, trees, wide paving and hanging baskets all year round.

Add to this some of the best antique and op-shops in the North Island, affordable and original art, great cafes and restaurants and plenty of green spaces to enjoy a different pace of life.

Every Saturday, the River Traders Whanganui market display their wares on the banks of the Whanganui – recorded in history as an early trading site for Maori. Original works of local artists and craftspeople are intertwined with a diverse range of delicious local produce.

As one of New Zealand’s best-kept secrets, Wanganui will surprise and delight your delegates.

At the heart of our region rising from the sacred peaks - Te Kahui Tupua - the Whanganui River flows relentlessly from the mountains to the sea and nestled on its banks, the city of Wanganui presents the perfect opportunity to create an unforgettable event.

Imagine pre-conference dinner drinks at the magnificent neo-classical Sarjeant Gallery, followed by dinner in the War Memorial Centre – an icon of post-modern architecture, or a ‘Night at the Museum’ experience – all within a five-minute walk.

For a small business meeting, enjoy the high tech, modern facilities of an inner city function room, or opt for the charm of yesteryear in a 100 year old Homestead. You could even charter a 100 year-old (restored) paddle steamer for something different.

time out, training and team building opportunities

welcome to whanganui

Page 23: 2012/13 Wanganui Conference Guide

whanganui conference guide 2012

If team building and training is your focus, try a guided canoe trip to the middle reaches of New Zealand’s longest navigable river - the majestic and spiritual Whanganui. Jet boat through rapids; camp by the river and observe wildlife in their natural habitat; visit the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’; or canoe at your leisure.

If you’re a bit of a landlubber, cycle in the Whanganui National Park section of the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail; or drive the 79km Whanganui River Road, rich in cultural and natural heritage. Visit the many beautifully preserved marae and historic settlements along the way including Hiruharama (Jerusalem), once home to Mother Mary Aubert whose Catholic missions remains today, and the highly recognized poet James K Baxter.

And when business is over and it’s time to relax … enjoy a spot of fishing; a brisk walk along one of our West Coast beaches; a leisurely stroll in one of numerous beautiful parks or reserves; indulge in a pamper session; some retail therapy; or simply ponder the Universe at the Ward Observatory.
