“Tin Shedders News”
Commencing from October the Tin Shedders will profile one of its group in your monthly newsletters. There are many “older” clubbies who have had both interesting and varied lives, either within the surf movement and /or outside of it. We will feature old members who are still active in assisting your club, together with some who have passed on to patrol that big surf beach in the sky. We would like to bring to you the stories of some of these members to provide you with an insight into the activities and achievements of these old members who proudly wore and supported the double blue colours. Most of them still do. Watch this space in October for the first of “Tin Shed Profiles”. Regards Neil Hodges Tin Shedder and Life Member of West Beach SLSC

Only 5 Sleeps to go and the big race is on!
All the Zuill’s are all running the City Bay this year (some of us have been training lots and others are just in it for fun). We have decided to raise funds for fantastic cause, one that
we have been involved with for over 30 years, Surf Life
Saving SA. SLSSA needs your help to raise much needed funds to ensure the helicopter is in the air, the jet boat is in the water and the rescue equipment is safe at each club this
summer.
Be a hero, support our surf lifesavers by clicking on the link below, hit the DONATE button – you can donate as little as $5
or as much as you want.

Get in the spirit of the City-Bay whilst supporting a charity that gives back to the public!
Did you know that in South Australia alone, we have 19 clubs who between them accumulate thousands of voluntary hours throughout summer; amazing hey! If you want to see all the services we provide and what we do please go on our website
www.surfrescue.com.au and like us on facebook!
Thanks for your support.

Boating News
The women’s section of the boat area is buzzing with activity There are some crews training for worlds, as well as new recruits aiming to compete in both open and masters events later in the season. All rowers are improving their fitness and their rowing technique, whilst enjoying the social and camaraderie aspects of participating in a team sport. A huge thank you goes to boaties Dave Gava and Woudy for undertaking extensive repairs to the “Bill Harvey-Crowson” to again make it a seaworthy training craft. Also thanks for their time and expertise to upgrade and repair the third surfboat trailer.

A note from our Officials Co-Coordinator, Heinrich Hofer
Hello All Parents and Carers of Junior Members of West Beach SLSC, The Surf Sports Standing Committee (formerly Board of Surf Sports) has mandated that each club must supply sufficient water cover and officials based on the number of competitors on the beach. The below excerpt has been taken from a bulletin delivered by the SSSC.
Clubs are required to provide officials at all carnivals whether they have competitors competing or not. Club obligations are to be met for the duration of the carnival (Start to Finish). Referees will close down areas or remove a club from the competition arena should a club fail to meet their obligation. The Board of Surf Sports (now Surf Sports Standing Committee), at its October 2009 meeting, also resolved the following: “That all clubs have an obligation to fill their quota in both junior and senior carnivals” It was agreed that penalties need to be put in place and enforced. For the first breach the Club will be offered a choice of withdrawing from the carnival or accept a penalty of $500 which will be suspended if the Club meets its commitments for the remainder of the season. For a second breach the Club will be liable for the original fine of $500 and either withdraw from the carnival or accept a further penalty of $500.
West Beach is required to supply a minimum of 6 officials per carnival. Therefore, this year it will be mandatory that each age group not only has an age group manager but also representation for water cover and official. In the past it has always been the same group of people who have undertaken these activities. If we were to have one representative from each age group then this burden could be shared and a roster will be completed for the season ahead. As an area referee, I have on multiple occasions found it difficult to secure enough officials to run an event. To ensure competition can continue, we have one official completing multiple roles. This season, we are aiming to fill each official position required in each area. To ensure we have enough officials I would encourage all those parents and carers of junior competitors to enrol in the upcoming official’s course. A course is being run on the 23rd of September. Please see link below http://surfrescue.com.au/docs/sport/C12042%20EOI%20level%201%20officials%20course%20UPDATED.pdf As an official, you are not only representing the club but are also able to gain access to your child and get to see them compete at a much closer vantage point than the spectators! Generally you will be able to choose the area in which you wish to official, thereby having the ability to be with your child on most occasions. Please support your child and the club by registering for the course and becoming an active participant in your child’s sport and a supporter of the club. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone (0488 547 099), email, or in person at the club. Cheers, Heinrich Hofer
