When you think about the month of income tax forms come
to mind? In the month of April, we experience mixed
emotions and thoughts such as stress, relaxation, starting
fresh, warm days, cleaning, etc. Our hearts are full of
renewal and fresh starts.
It may rain on or off again, but we really begin to notice it, when the sun is shining, and you
want to be out there enjoying it, not inside cleaning. These are the true signs of the month
of April.
April comes from the Latin word aperire which means “to open”. The name is appropriate
because in many places trees and flowers begin to bloom and open during the month of
April.
In ancient Rome, April was the second month of the year. When the Gregorian calendar
was adopted, it became the fourth month of the year. It is one of the four months with
thirty days.
The birthstone for April is the diamond. Usually diamonds
bring thoughts of engagement rings and colorless, sparkling
stones, but diamonds come in several colors too. Yellow,
red, pink, blue and green diamonds are rare and usually
more expensive than colorless diamonds. The Diamond is
associated with enhancing relationships and increasing inner
strength. The Traditional Metaphysical Properties for the
April Birthstone Diamond are balance, clarity and
abundance. The healing properties of the April birthstone
are reputed to be effective for health problems relating to brain diseases, pituitary
glands. The Diamond is also used to draw out toxins and therefore was used as a remedy
for poison.
April's birth flower is the daisy
which conveys innocence, loyal love,
and purity. It is also a flower given
between friends to keep a secret;
the daisy means "I'll never tell."
The other April flower is the sweet
pea. Sweet peas signify blissful
pleasure, but are also used to say
good-bye.

April Holidays and Observances
April Fool’s Day, the first day in April. On this day practical jokes are practiced on the
unwary (and often the wary as well). This tradition seems to have originated in France
where New Years Day was celebrated during medieval times on the 1st of April. Gregory
XIII changed it back to the 1st of January in 1582. Many people in rural areas did not
make the change for several years. The cosmopolitan city dwellers thought them fools for
this reason and it became the fashion to take advantage of the naiveté of the provincials
on this date. The practice spread to England and other English speaking countries.
When "The Masters" was created, the other golf tournaments that
existed:
(1) The U.S. Open (2) The PGA (Professional Golfer's Association) had
never played in the southern United States or what is termed "the deep
South." So, in 1934, Bobby Jones, a famous golfer who had come from the
South and who had also designed the golf course for the prominent and
exclusive Augusta National Golf Club, decided to start a golf tournament in
Georgia. This is why The Masters is held the first week of
April every year in Augusta, Georgia.
Don't forget that Income Tax Day is April 15th. Be sure to
have your tax return postmarked by midnight!
The oldest footrace in America! The Boston Marathon takes place
the third Monday in April each year since 1969. This is also "Patriot's
Day" in Massachusetts (and Maine) named for the anniversary of the
battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. Therefore, as its
name implies, the Boston Marathon is always held in the city of
Boston, Massachusetts on "Patriot's Day,"
Ironically, the Boston Athletic Association first organized the race to be run on St.
Patrick's Day in 1897, with only 15 runners. Today it records as many as 9,000 runners
each year. The course is 26.2 miles long. Its basis is the original Olympic footraces held in
1896 which is from the legend that a Greek runner ran 25 miles to bring the news of the
marathon to Athens that they WON over the Persians in 490 BC.
Earth Day/Arbor Day is observed on April 22nd. Many communities plan programs and
events geared toward protecting and cleaning up the environment. Only two countries
celebrate Arbor Day: The United States and Puerto Rico.
5
Historic Events in March
President Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865.
The first Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. They began on April 6, 1896.
The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912 after hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean.
The United States Air Force Academy was established on April 1, 1954.
April cold with dropping rain
Willows and lilacs brings again,
The whistle of returning birds
And trumpet-lowing of the herds.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

April President’s Article
April is now upon us and we must share our gratitude to all the residents who helped
with the March activities. I will not attempt to name individuals as that would be sheer
folly. Your collective contributions to Lake Hammock Village make it a great place to
live.
Our five and a half months have sped by too quickly. Where did the time go? We still
have things we want to do. However, shortly after you read this article, we will be on our
way to our summer home in Ontario. But we are not going yet as I understand they are
getting another blast of winter snow! Hopefully by the end of the second week of April all
the winter experience will be done.
As occurred last year, the Board will be cancelling its meetings in the summer.
Therefore, ideas for summer activities should be presented by the May Board meeting.
The Board can hold an emergency meeting, but planning several months ahead is really
helpful.
This year, during my absence, I have asked Vice President Brian Lund to write these
articles and to chair the Board and General Meetings. I am sure he will receive great
support from all of you.
To each of our snowbirds, I extend our thanks for their participation in all of our activities
and a safe journey home. To all the year-round residents we thank you for your support
and wish for you a safe and healthy summer. And we look forward to coming together
once again next fall and winter at our Lake Hammock Village community.
The following quote best describes for us going home to spring:
“In our part of the country, spring passes by quickly. If you haven’t
been out for five days, you find the trees in bud. If you don’t see the
trees for another five days, you discover that they’ve put out leaves.
In another five days, they’re so green you wouldn’t recognize them.
It makes you wonder; that’s how fast spring goes by. You can almost
see it. From far away it comes racing towards you. And when it reaches
you, it whispers in your ear, “I’m here.” And then runs swiftly on.
Xiao Hong
Regards,
Dave

Something on April 15 is more important than submitting your tax payment to the
IRS. It is also the day that Lake Hammock Villagers are going to the Columbia
Restaurant in Celebration to share good food and fellowship. Have you heard
about the original Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City near Tampa? If you have you
know it opened in 1905 and has shared Spanish and Cuban culinary treasures ever
since. The Columbia now has eight locations in Florida and the Celebration
location is in our backyard. A sample menu is posted in the clubhouse near the
sign-up sheets. If there are too many choices, go safe and order one of their
tapas (appetizer) and a smaller version of their famous 1905 salad. Save room
for dessert...the Columbia bread pudding is a memory maker. It's large enough to
share. Sign-up before April 13. Meet at the clubhouse at 11:00 am to car pool to
Celebration. Lori Johnsen (863)588.1599 is your hostess.
_____________________________________________________________ An elderly couple had dinner at another couple’s house, and after eating, the wives left the table
and went into the kitchen.
The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, “Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it
was really great. I would recommend it very highly.”
The other man said, “What is the name of the restaurant?”
The first man thought and thought and finally said, “What is the name of that flower you give to
someone you love? You know…the one that is red and has thorns.”
“Do you mean a rose?”
“Yes,” the man said, He turned toward the kitchen and yelled, “Rose, what’s the name of that
restaurant we went to last night?”
I hate paying my income tax.
You should be a good citizen – why
don’t you pay with a smile?
I’d like to but they insist on
money.

I became confused when I heard the word "Service" used with these agencies:
Internal Revenue 'Service'
U.S. Postal 'Service'
Telephone 'Service'
Cable TV 'Service'
Civil 'Service'
State, City, County & Public 'Service'
Customer 'Service'
This is not what I thought 'Service' meant.
But today, I overheard two farmers talking, and one of them said he had
hired a bull to 'Service' a few cows.
BAM!!! It all came into focus. Now I understand what all those agencies
are doing to us.
