Dear Readers,
The past couple of months have been charged with lots of eques-trian events. The showjumping finals for the Juniors and Seniors inAlexandria, The polo team competing in Spain, The inauguration ofthe Presidential Guard Equestrian Club, The Eleventh annual Egyp-tian Arabian Horse event in Sakkara and further more, a wholeyear has passed since Horse Times started.
During that year, we have tried to cover most of the various eventsif not all, we have created listings for most of the available servicesand we haven’t forgotten about those who have been stars in thepast carrying the sport on until today.
Apparently, there is a lot going on and there is still a lot to come.What is significant here, is that every one who loves the horseshould be involved one way or another. We should share and helpin making things happen.Although it is quite nice to hear and read about things, yet, being apart of them is by far better.

ctober 1997 was when theidea of creating a Presidential
Guard Equestrian Club emerged. Thisplan soon became a reality and theclub was publicized on December 141998. However, it was not before March17th 1999 that the Presidential GuardEquestrian Club was officiallyinaugurated and became a fullmember of the Egyptian EquestrianFederation.
The inauguration ceremony took placein the presence of Gamal Mubarak, whoas a Board member of the PresidentialGuard Equestrian Club, gave his fullsupport to help create this clubaccording to the latest technology andhighest standards.
Among the list of attendees were Chief ofPresidential Guards forces Gen. Dr.Mahmoud Khallaf, who is also Chairman ofthe Boardof the Equestrian Club; GeneralMohamed Sabry Salah, Director of Aramourdep.; General Saad Khalifa, President of theEgyptian Equestrian Federation, as well asother federation board members and the
Olympic
veteran rider Gamal Hares.
The ceremony, supervised by LieutenantColonel Mohamed Moselhi, SecretaryGeneral of the Presidential GuardEquestrian Club, included a show-jumping demonstration to reveal thecapabilities of the Presidential Guardriders, followed by a complete tour of thepremises, stables and veterinaryequipment available, and ending with acocktail reception.
The Presidential GuardEquestrian Club is fullyequipped to meet thedemands of its 85 riders,25 of whom ride ponies.There are three ridingarenas; one grass(95x45m), and two sand(75x45m) & (40x45). Allshowjumping anddressage equipment isshipped from abroad.The fences and courseequipment is made of aspecial combination ofplastic and aluminum, which is extremelydurable (so as not to be affected byweather conditions) and comes in avariety of colors. The newly built brickstables house 24 horses, where eachhorse has a spacious box with rubberfloors, to protect their hooves and
ensure easier sanitation, aswell as automatic drinkingbowls. An effectiveventilation systemguarantees that the air iscontinuously being
renewed and odorsdiffused inside thestables. There are alsorandomly placedinsect andf l y c a t c h e r s . T h ePresidential Guard
transportation lorry is in aleague of its own,
regardless of its eye-catching blue color, this Mercedes lorry
the driver to constantly ensure the horsessafety during transportation . Acomplete neatly arranged tack room isbuilt where each horse’s equipmentand grooming tools are separatelyplaced. Also available is a walker, witha capacity of placing 6 horsessimultaneously to excercise & warm uphorses. Continuous veterinary consultation
is offered at all times, as there is a constantrotation between the 8 veterinarians at theclub to guarantee both horse and ridersafety.
Since the inauguration, the PresidentialGuard Equestrian Club has lived up toits standards and proudly hosted its firstcompetition on May 20 1999. 106 ridersfrom 10 different clubs participated inthe competition, which turned out tobe a complete success, both from themanagerial and technical aspects.
The competition was under the auspicesof Gamal Mubarak, and was attendedby Chief of Presidential Guards ForcesGen.Mahmoud Khallaf, General SabrySalah, Federation President GeneralSaad Khalifa as well as Olympic ridersGamal Hares, Selim Zaki, Elwi Ghazi &Omar El Haddary.

her horse and broke her hips!She was rushed to the
hospital in His Majesty’spersonal ambulanceand there the Royalfamily stayed with herand made sure shegot immediate andadequate medicalattention. He evensent her cigarettes;back then Lubna’sparents did not know
their daughter was asmoker!
Lubna recalls the eventwith great melancholy, to her andmany other Jordanians His Majestywas not only a man who gave theequestrian world a different taste, hewas the most approachable man tothose who needed him. Our discussionseized and cherished that thought for Isaw in Lubna’s eyes what I saw in othersonce the announcement of the passingaway of our beloved King Hussein wasmade.
AS WE CONTINUE TO FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS,THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES PRINCESSES ALYAAND HAYA CARRY HIS BLOOD, COURAGE,AND THE SAME TRUE APPRECIATION OFHORSES. OUR JORDANIAN EQUESTRIANWORLD HAS LOST A REAL HORSEMAN. BUTTHE LEGACY HE LEFT BEHIND SHALL OUTLIVETHE SANDS OF JORDAN’S DESERTS. MAYGOD BLESS HIS SOUL.
Everything is triggered by something.This literature was triggered by theappearance of Amr. Amr, an Arabianstallion that belongs to His RoyalMajesty the late King Hussein bin Talalof Jordan. Amr walked along in hisrider’s funeral, and a stallion’s normalbehavior in a crowd is one of feistinessand hyperness - Amr that day was not.
I sat with Hani Bisharat (Captain of theJordanian National Show jumpingTeam) and he shared his reminiscingmoments of His Majesty with me. I feltit my duty as a rider, writer, and a truefan of His Majesty to pay tribute thebest way I know how.
His Majesty never attended anequestrian school, for that he needednot to, for he inherited the natural seatof a rider from his grandfathers. Hewas known for his intense love toanimals, and therefore, he knew atrue appreciation of horses. An assethe was for he sparkled the reservationof the Arabian horse.
The first International Show Jumpingevent that took place in Jordan in1986 was under the patronage of theirRoyal Majesties King Hussein andQueen Noor. His Majesty dropped insuddenly, literally, with his helicopterin the center of the arena. He chosenot to sit in the VIP stand, instead, hestood in the arena and helped withputting up and setting fences. Thatdid not satisfy his senseof involvement, heb e g a ncheering ther i d e rcompeting!He cheeredwith suchenthusiasmthat wasn a t u r a l l ydisseminatedto the riders.The sensationw a sremembered tobe one that words could not describe.
Her Royal Highness Princess Haya BintEl-Hussein, now competing andplaying the major role in the team,came for a while to do training at theArabian Horse Club. Their RoyalMajesties King Hussein and QueenNoor were there too! Hani remembersHis Majesty sitting back, relaxing, anddrinking his coffee for hours. It was asthough His Majesty was releasing theimmense load off his chest. Next thingyou know he would jump up, walk intothe arena, and help out with thetraining. His Majesty’s presence wasnot only a boost of morale - it wasirreplaceable. His Majesty gave manyriders an incentive to excel. For LubnaEzz El-Din that incentive was translatedinto a direct challenge between herand His Majesty in one of the ShowJumping events.

RACINGRACING
It has been a very successful racing season at the Gezira Sporting Club(G.S.C). Thanks to all racing fans and supporters.
Gezira Sporting Club had the honor of hosting many National andInternational races this season as The Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al NahianCup in December 1998 and March 1999, as well as The Egyptian ArabianBreeders Association Cup in October 1998.
Since summer has settled in Cairo, once again horse racing will run inAlexandria from June till the end of September.
The G.S.C racing committee has done a lot of improvements on itsgrounds, so the racing audience will be sitting on a better terrace, enjoyingthe full view on the track, the new developments : flowers, gardens, greenfences ...The fences all around the track have been improved for the security ofthe horses, jockeys and joggers.
The Gezira Racing Committee has won its challenge, the season hasbeen a great success !
Looking forward to seeing you in October.

Since horses have been ridden, much has been tempted to enhance their performances. Doping is aburning topic, so it became a necessity to eradicate a practice which denatures the animal health andsports ethics.If the use of amphetamine, corticoid, anabolic steroids and other doping substances doesn’t leave anydoubt about the fraudulent intentions, in equestrian matter it is largely dominated by non intentional cases.

The equation “care + competition” is very seldom possible, at the end it is your choice, butknowing that all positive controls are strictly sanctioned, the try indicates for sure a certain irresponsibility.

The Egyptian Arabian Horse Breeders Association (EAHBA) was founded by a group of zealousbreeders in 1986. Since that date to the present time, EAHBA is wasting no effort in promotingand preserving the exquisite Egyptian Arabian Horse in Egypt.
This was the basic purpose of its initiation as stated in its constitution,and remains so at present. The registered members in the Associationare 75 breeding farms, and growing by the year.
EAHBA founded races exclusively for the pure-bred Egyptian Arabianhorses in Cairo and Alexandria. Racetracks, which previously hostedonly races for non-pure lines. The number of races held by theAssociation are 50 races per year, with an annual purse of 600 000Egyptian pounds, presented by His Majesty Sheikh Zayid Bin SultanAl-Nahiyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates. The challengehas motivated the breeders to improve their breeding programs andattaining more competitive performing horses.

It is a two-day event that gathers hundreds of horse lovers from Egypt,the U.S.A., Europe and the Arab countries. Internationaljudges are invited to judge the horses according to asophisticated scoring system.
Again His Majesty Sheikh Zayid Bin Sultan Al-Nahiyan, issponsoring the show by donating 200 000 Egyptian poundsas prize money. The purse money and the honor of winningon that show draws about 120 participants in every show.
The breeders have benefited from these shows significantly.They recognize their strong and weak points in their horses,thus modifying their breeding programs in order to achieve better confirmation and performance. It is a gatheringwhere all breeders, local and international, meet to discuss and evaluate their horses.
The Egyptian Arabian is a rare breed. It constitutes only 3% of the total Arabians horse population in the world. Effortsof the EAHBA and similar sincere organizations around the world are undertaking a major responsibility in promotingand preserving this valuable heritage.

This disease is generally accepted as being an aseptic inflamation of thesensetive laminae. The Laminae are dilecated tissues, loaded with small bloodvessels, that attach the hard shell of the hoof to the bone underneath.The inflamation of this sensitivelaminae is accompanied bymarked exudation. The pressureof this exudation coupled withhorse’s weight and the pull ofthe deep digital flexor tendon isaccompanied by a rotation ofthe third phalonx.In consequence its antero-inferior border presses on thesole which becomes flat or evenconvex due to the pressure fromthis rotation.
Causes:1-Grain Founder :
This is caused by the horse eating larger quantities of grains.(Barley - corn and wheat steam.)
2-Grass Founder :This type is common in horses grazing on green pasture.Grass founder can be seen in fat horses during winter.3-Water Founder :The overheated horse drinking cold water.4-Road Founder :Due to concusions to the feet from hard work. Alsoseen in horses given a long ride in horse trailer overrough roads or in trailers having no adequate springs.
5- Postportium founder :Due to retention of some foetal membrane or due to infection of the uterus. This type is veryserious.6- Viral Founder :Some viral respiratorydis7-Miscallaneous Founders :a) Hormonal. b) Administration of drugs as high amount Laxtine or corticosteroid.c) Insufficient exercises predisposing factor to founder.d) A Horse that has severely injured limb may place enough weighs on another limb ormore of the remaining limbs laminitis occur.

** In the interests of the horse, the fitness andcompetence of the rider shall be regarded as
essential.**All riding and training methods
must take account of the horse asa living entity and must exclude
any technique considered byFEI to be abusive.**National federationsshould establish adequatecontrols in order that allpersons and bodies undertheir jurisdiction respectthe welfare of the horse.
**The national andinternational rules and
regulations in equestriansports regarding the health and
welfare of the horse must beadhered to not only during national

“Only after I got ‘Troy’ that I actuallystarted competing” declared Zeina.I never had my own horse before, Iused to jump with ‘Rabha’ and wentinto different levels together, thatwas it. But only after forming thisspecial bond between me and Troythat I thought we could worktogether as a team.
He was really my first horse, myresponsibility. It took me two wholemonths to get close to him anddevelop the body languagerequired between rider and horse.
First day, I stayed with him in thestable, walking him, petting him,talking to him and him sniffing backat me. He knows my touch andvoice. “It’s not only work, it is aprocess of friendship”, she admits.You have to be nice to the horse,some riders just don’t have thesense, when they don’t connectwith the horse, they simply don’t getthe right response from them.“They owe the his hors, a thank youto give them a pleasant ride”. If youtreat it nicely, he’ll always do well foryou.
You can have different riders withdifferent techniques. I saw anAustrian rider and a French rideronce riding the same horse.
Zeina, 13 years old, daughter of a veteranrider and ardent horse lover Nagwa El Dali,describes to us in zeal and compassion howshe developed her passion for horses into thenatural progress of showjumping.
The latter lookedbetter with the horse, better on thefence, seemed to understand himbetter, they seemed like theyclicked, yet with the Austrian riderthe horse didn’t seem to yield withhim.
“To me” Zeina affirms, “the bodylanguage between rider and horse
is very important to makethem work as a team, theyhave to think alike andconnect to do well.”“My mother is my trainer”Zeina replies. “AndIbrahim Sami, owner ofSakkara Country Club....
He’s an nice coach”, sheadds.
When I asked Zeina’s mother‘Bupsy’ if she had any influenceon her daughter’s equestrianinclinations, she answered; “Ididn’t push her to this hobby.When she was younger, Iintroduced her to all differentkinds of sports; squash, tennis,swimming, ballet and rollerblades.I didn’t do anything to affect herdecision, this is why I didn’t buy hera horse till she was old enough totake the responsibility.”Zeina promptly replied “I love it, Ienjoy it so much ... having horsesaround me, is part of me.”
Zeina added; when I was younger, Iused to like swimming, squash andtennis. I try to keep up with some ofmy hobbies when time is availableespecially ‘photography’. I really liketaking pictures and developingthem.”
My daily schedule is as follows, afterschool, I go home, get dressed, goto Sakkara Country Club, where Troyresides. I first check on the horse, sayhello, he calls back to me. When Iride, Istart
walking him, gradually trotting,trotting around in circles. I do somelateral work, transitions then canter.If I jump; I do single fences,gymnastics and combination ofgymnastics. Or I work with him onthe flat for an hour or a little more.After I’m done, I take him back andgive him a treat.“When you have a good day, theylisten to you and understand you.When you have a bad day, you’restiff, they’ll know you’re nervous andthey’ll get back to you.”

The reigning World Champion, Rodrigo Pessoa defended his title in Goteborg, Sweden atthe 21st World Cup Final in unbelievable style. Second runner up Trevor Coyle later reportedthat, “Pessoa is so good for the sport. He believes strongly in all of the members who make
the sport work together.” His current standing as World Champion and World Cup Champion,his lifetime knowledge of the sport and his youthful passion provide him with both the spotlight
and the strength.
Pessoa’s win in Goteborg was based on points gained throughout the World Cup season,which starts in October and ends in April. German Olaf Petersen designed all the courses
in the finals and all rounds were said to be very difficult technically.
The Scandinavian crowd tensed up tremendously before the finals. Trevor Coyleand Cruising were clear with half a time fault but when Rodrigo entered the arenathe crowd roared with excitement and the atmosphere was very tense. The oneapparent thing was that Pessoa is comfortable with the stress; he acted as if it were
any other day. He was focused and fierce. Succeding to add a fault free round to hisrapidly growing list of victories, Pessoa gallopped around the ring, helmet in hand, knowinghe had merited another title.
When asked about how he felt about finishing second, Trevor said, “First I would like tocongratulate Rodrigo on a wonderful performance - again! It’s getting a little boring forthe rest of us. He’s such a cool guy, we are hoping that with his win last year in the World
Championships, all this pressure would build and build and build. We all keep waiting for himto crack, and he still hasn’t cracked. At the moment we are all struggling in his wake. We are just waiting to see if hecracks later on this year. Until then we will just be sitting there waiting!”

EVENT. ince the 17th of June, 1999,the Arab Horse Society of
Egypt is the officially recognizedorganizing body for Endurance inEgypt by the FEE & FEI. As Egypt isone of the prime countries ofEndurance in the Middle East, theAHSE will organize qualifying ridesunder the Federation EquestreInternational rules for World Cupand possible future Olympicrecognition.

In order to take part in theseevents, it is necessary to registerboth horse and rider with theAHSE.In November 1999 there will bethe first Endurance Ride run underFEI rules.
The riders will have to attend aseminar on Endurance riding andtraining. These rides are open toall horses 7 years and older andriders 12 years and older. 1)Entries must be made on theofficial entry form by theregistered owner and rider of thehorse who must sign it and agreeto be bound by the rules of theevent.2) In making an entry, theconnections of the horse, i.e. theowner, trainer, and rider and allpersons connected with the horseagree to be subject to theNational Rules and Regulations forendurance events in Egypt as laiddown by the Arab Horse Societyof Egypt which is affiliated to theEgyptian Equestrian Federation.

n our delicatly competitive sport ofshow jumping, one could adoptvarious techniques to achieve success, inother words to win. As there always hasbeen a contravorsery between winning witha very stylish technique Vs. winning with avery poor one. We created this page in orderto help the riders achieve success moreefficiently and elegantly at the same time.
According to Winston Churchill, “Hopingand praying for victory is fine, butdeserving victory is what really matters.”
For those experienced riders with us today,we thank them for using their pictures andwe will be seeing more of them in thefuture.
Mohamed Boraie :The Take off is correct and so consequently thehorse looks quite round on top of the fence. Yet,the rider has to lower his hands so that hiselbows, wrist and hands and reins form astraight line.
Gamal Amer :Although the horse is still in the take offposition and hasn’t begun landing yet, he needsto be more round. The rider’s elbows should beplaced more closely to his body in order toallow the horse to extend his head and neckthrough the bit more downwards.
Hadi Gabr :The horse is round, yet the rider’s hips are alittle bit too high in the saddle. The rider shouldplace his hands more forward to allow a betterextension of the horse’s neck instead of thegoose neck position.
Sameh Hattab :The hands of the rider are a little high as theydo not form the striaght imaginary line betweenthe horse’s mouth, reins and hands. Yet this isindirectly due to the fact that the upper body ofthe rider should have been a little less inclined assuch.

InInInInIn our first article dedicated to the nutrition of horses we discussed the biological origin of the horse and
the feed ration that should be related to that origin. Subsequently we have tried to explain the build andthe digestive system of the horse.In this second article on the nutrition of horses we will treat the last remaindersof the feed the droppings. As soon as the horse has swallowed the pulpymass, the feed follows a one-way road. After it has been swallowed, itgets to the stomach in a few seconds via the gullet (oesophagus). Thenthere is no way back. It is not possible for a horse to throw up. The contentof the stomach amounts to 10 to 15 litres. This is minimal in comparisonto the size of the horse.As we stated earlier digestion takes place in the small and the largeintestine. Since the small content of his stomach it is obvious that a horsefeels best when it is supplied with smaller quantities of feed several timesduring the day. Large intakes at the same time are disastrous for the horse.Inside the stomach the feed is mixed with gastric juice which earlier has been mixed with saliva, thus turningit into a wet feed ball. In the stomach starch is transformed into sugars. The activity of the stomach mainlydepends on the quality and type of feed, its being clean and free from noxious elements.So be well aware that contaminated feed, too large quantities of feed or feed the horse is not used to eatmay cause gastric complaints like fermentation, rotting gases, colic or a torn stomach wall.EQUI SANUM HORSE FEEDS are always composed of pure, mould free ingredients.
The digestive processAfter leaving the stomach the feed mixture gets to the small intestine with a length of abt. 20 metres. Herethe amino acids and proteins in the feed are taken from the digestible proteins. These are the building
materials of the proteins. Mostly in feed analyses, onlyraw protein is mentioned. However, it is very importantthat the level of digestible raw protein is also reported.The smaller the difference between raw protein anddigestible protein, the better the quality of the proteinand thus also of the feed.The degraded starch (carbohydrates) to sugars is madeabsorbable by the intestinal juices and absorbed intothe blood stream by way of the intestinal wall. To acertain extent hardly digestible elements like celluloseare necessary to benefit a proper grinding. However,they don’t contain nutrients. After passing the smallintestine, the feed mixture passes by the caecum witha content of abt. 30 litres, a content not to be comparedwith the human caecum. Bacteria and micro organisms- the so-called intestinal flora - act from the caecumand the large intestine, to make the nutrients availableto the horse.The large intestine is the last of the digestive organs.Here the remaining liquid is taken from the feed mixture.Therefore it is important that the soaked feed massdoesn’t pass too quickly through the large intestine. Inthat case too much liquid will be taken from the feedresulting into diarrhoea. Naturally the pancreas andthe liver also play an important role in the digestiveprocess. Both organs produce many digestive juices.However, we do not wish our article to become tootechnical. We may revert to this matter some othertime. Well formed droppings with a moisture contentlevel between75 and 80% are a sign of a regulardigestion and good health. “One of the most common raised debates occurs after eliminating a rider from competition for committing one of the most silly mistakessuch as starting to jump without saluting the Judges, and having their permission to start.The rider, who cared enough to participate, and paid registration fees, transportation expenses and may be more like accomodationexpenses, suddenly finds himself being eliminated from competition for a very basic mistake he did, such as starting to jump withoutwaiting for the Judge’s signal (the bell), and subsequently all the mentioned above efforts are wasted for nothing .Of course if you put yourself in his shoe; you can’t help feeling angry, frustrated and even disagreeing with the Judges decisions.But on the other hand, you should also try the other shoe of the Judge, who (out of being equally fair to every body) is totally responsibleof implementing the FEI rules which dominate the conduct of competition and competitors, those rules enforce the elimination decisionin such a case.The optimum solution in my opinion is that our clubs (out of being responsible of educating their riders) should start to organize, with thehelp of the Federation some sessions, to explain to the riders how to avoid putting themseleves and accordingly their clubs in such badsituations.At the same time Riders in the process of increasing their general knowledge of the rules which organize the sport they love the most,should try to acquire more infromation, by reading more, or even by asking their Judges, about what ever might be confusing to them.”

Q.About the summer camp what was the criteria for selectionand why some winners were not chosen to travel?Eng. Abdel Fatah Ragab: “The FEE always has to be fair toeverybody so we decided to choose the winners of the seasonaccording to the overall results. So we selected all winnersfrom the Juniors to give them good exposure abroad and weselected the winners of the A class together with our two verygood riders that live in Europe Andre Sakakini & Karim Zoghbito prepare them for the Arab games in Amman.About the riders who didn’t travel with the federation.Unfortunately two of the selected ones could not join inbecause they had other personal engagements. The otherswere not actually selected although they were from thewinners of the season. But a decision was taken unanimouslyin the board meeting before the finals that all the riders whorefused to participate in the preliminary camp held in Cairowill lose their right in joining the summer camp in Europe.”
The season is now over, some people are satisfied , others are not !!The season has witnessed a lot of conflicts, yet this is not necessarily bad, if things go alwaysmonotonously it means that there is no action and no change.. and that is the key word“CHANGE”. calculated change leads to progress and this is what we all wish for.Q. Can you say that the FEE has done calculated changesduring this season ?Gen. Saad Khalifa :”There has been a lot of changes thisseason as a matter of fact I am satisfied with these changesalthough some of them were a bit confusing like Doping& Dressage. But you all should know that we will never bereally “International” without considering these two impor-tant subjects. The dressage that the FEE is implementing isuntill now nothing but proper flat work and that is essencialfor riders and horses and is actually a defect in most of ourriders.About doping I agree that we should educate the ridersfirst so they know what to use and when to treat their horses,knowing that someone who paid a considerable amountto buy a horse would want that horse to have a longhealthy career and would refrain from abusing that horseand causing him a problem in the long term.”
A natural born storyteller, Omar El Haddary joyfully reminisces thegood old times, as Sima Fares discovers the inside story.
Omar El Haddary graduated from the Military Academy in 1944 to jointhe Horse Regiment in the Royal Egyptian Cavalry. The prominent ridersat that time were Ahmed Mazhar and Taha El Zenini who taught him theprinciples of riding and introduced him to show jumping. El Haddarywas already a well-trained rider, following his father’s footsteps, whowas an artillery officer and a keen polo rider.Because of the restrictions after World War II, imports of foreign horses
into Egypt were prohibited; the last shipment before the war being horsesfrom Argentina. So El Haddary and the other riders had to break and train mixed breed
or Arabian horses to ride.
Dakota was the name of the mixed breed gelding, which El Haddary took upon himself totrain and school. His hard work and dedication certainly paid off, because he rode Dakota all
the way to his national & international fame and fortune. During the “High Jump Championship for Arab & Other Horses,” heldat the Mena House in 1948, (then) Lieutenant El Haddary, set a new worldwide record winning the championship with Dakota.The record fence was put up at a height of 160cm and by the time the fence reached 180cm, there was only one rider left - ElHaddary, the winner.As of 1948, shipment of horses from UK and France resumedonce again, and the Frenchman, Colonel Pierre La Farg, wasbrought to train the national team. La Farg’s training methodsand techniques improved the Egyptian riders’ overallperformance, which allowed them to travel to France in 1949for international exposure. The competitions in Franceunfolded fruitful results and revealed the Egyptians capacitiesworldwide.The city of Nimes, was on the French-Spanish border, so thecompetition was held in a bull fighting arena making it quitehard for the big horses to canter, turn and jump. But thencame El Haddary riding the slender Arabian horse, Sayed ElWadi, winning “La Grand Prix de la ville de Nimes” with fencesput up as high as 140-150 cm.The Grand Prix in Vichy was Concours HippiqueInternationale, a one round course with fences at 140-150cm. El Haddary had secured first place with his Arabian horse,until the last rider chevalier D’Orjex beat him by 1/5 of asecond on a foreign horse.The arrival of a new German trainer and former gold medal winner in the 1936 Olympics, Hans Brinkemann, was the gateway tointroduce the German horse to the Egyptian riders. He trained for two years, and coached the team during the StockholmOlympics in 1956.El Haddary personally benefited most from the Italian trainer, General Gerardo Conforti, who was an Olympic veteran and Ex-president of the Tour di Quinto school, the biggest Equestrian school worldwide. Using Brinkemann’s German horses, Confortibegan planning for participating in the Rome Olympics in 1960 a year earlier and devised an intense training schedule solely forthat purpose. El Haddary was made Chef D’Equipe and the Egyptians victoriously finished 4th in the 1964 Olympics.Of his most precious memories, El Haddary recalls his triumph with the 8 year old Irish gelding Sea Ferrer. It was in 1954, in Niceby the seaside. The competition was called “Puissance Progressive” and started off with 55 riders jumping 6 alike fences. After
every round 2 fences are removed, and the remaining number of fences areput up even higher. 33 riders made clear rounds to jump the 4 fences, and aremaining 5 were to jump the last 2 fences put up at 180cm and 205cm. ElHaddary, being one of those unique 5 riders, considered it sufficient enoughto finish at 5th place and not enter the final round, however LieutenantColonel Ahmed Mazhar encouraged him to participate with a winningattitude. Surely enough, El Haddary finished 2nd place dropping a rail of the180cm fence and faultlessly flying over the 205cm fence, being the highestfence he ever jumped in his life.
After participating in 9 Nations Cup worldwide, El Haddary left the Armyin 1967, when all equestrian activities came to a halt because of thewar. When it resumed once more in the 70’s, El Haddary became thetrainer for Sporting Club from 1976 to 1978, and then the Army from 1978- 1985. Still a dedicated horse lover, El Haddary trains the riders in theGezira Club regularly.
