Declawing is really a nicer way of saying amputating. When a cat is declawed, a surgery that removes the ends of its toes is performed. This practice is discouraged by the ASPCA. Rather than surgically removing cat claws, simply pamper the pet a little and trim the nails every few weeks. Let the cat adjust to the sound of the clipper by clipping pieces of spaghetti. Get him or her used to having his or her paws manipulated by gently massaging the feet every day, and offer treats as a reward. Most importantly, it’s better to trim a tiny bit off the end than to cut to the quick. No cat lover would doubt that cats -whose senses are much keener than ours - suffer pain. They may, however, hide it better. This is not a surgery to be taken lightly. We recommend that you get your pet checked regularly by an animal expert.
