Change is coming to the Community Foundation! It may go

undetected by many, but will be quite noticeable to those

closest to the organization. After three years, Bob Jensen is

retiring from the top seat of the board of directors. We are for-

tunate that Bob served as a three-term president. Not only

has the Community Foundation benefitted through his leader-

ship, but so has the community. He brought what’s known lov-

ingly as the nonprofit trifecta - giving the gifts of time, talent

and treasurer. These also are the hallmarks of his presidency.

Bob is known for starting and ending meetings promptly.

He made himself available to staff even though he leads

his own company, Temp Associates.

Using his expertise in human resources, he built a board of

stature and vision with diverse expertise.

He is always the first to contribute to the board’s giving

campaign and encourages others to donate, too.

His was the first donation to the Cares & Shares Endow-

ment making it a permanent fund with local leadership.

His philosophy of giving back permeates the organization. He

distributed 150 grant checks to nonprofit groups, personally

funded the first year of a new program to bring dental services

to the underserved and signed 40 new fund agreements es-

tablishing many charitable and endowed funds.

Bob, thank you for your commitment of time, talent and treas-

ure! Your terms as president helped the Community Founda-

tion grow and prosper leading it to greater self-sustainability

and broader service. Although Bob won’t be leading as the

board chair anymore, he will continue on the Board of Direc-

tors, and he has assured us he won’t be leaving either.

Each year, the Community Foun-dation creates a new, fun theme for the annual friend- and fundraiser. Whether it’s wine tasting, chili cook-off, or pie eating; there’s al-ways good food and great people.

annual fundraiser - a delicious success!

More than 125 friends of the Community Foundation of Greater Muscat-ine turned out for the annual fundraiser held on October 6, 2013 in Pearl Plaza. The theme, “Get Your PIEce of the PIE,” tempted guests to sam-ple some of the 50 homemade pies that were graciously donated by our pie event volunteers. Pies included traditional favorites like apple and cherry, but unique flavors such as chocolate chip cookie dough, gooseberry and “fruits of the forest” pies that were also available.

Guests enjoyed live music provided by the Fry Daddy’s, a decedent cheese tasting selection, an ice cream sundae bar and a live and silent auction.

Money raised supports the programs, services and operations of the Com-munity Foundation and all those it serves.

Great Initiatives Award The 2013 recipient of the Great Initiatives Award is Mr. Santos Saucedo, founder of the Muscatine County Boxing Club. Mr. Saucedo was nominated for his excellent work in creating a youth boxing club that not only teaches the skill of boxing, but al-so teaches youth important skills of perseverance, hard work and overcoming adversity.

Youth Initiatives Award Two outstanding students from Muscatine High School, Katie Friederichs & Erin Lagone, were the 2013 winners of the Youth Initiatives Award. To-gether they developed an after-school program for elementary students teaching them about agricul-ture and food sources while being mentored by high school students at the Ag Learning Center.

Jumpstart for Charities

Muscatine County has a wealth

of good organizations provid-

ing important services. To en-

sure that these worthwhile

charitable groups remain a vi-

tal part of our community for

generations, the Community

Foundation launched the

Jumpstart Program. Matching

grants were awarded to three

local groups to jumpstart en-

dowments for their benefit.

An endowment is everlasting

and generates an annual

stream of revenue upon which

these organizations, and those

they serve, can depend. Con-

gratulations to the Diversity

Service Center of Iowa,

Flickinger Learning Center and

Muscatine Band Booster.

Donate to any of these organi-

zations’ endowments and you

can earn a 25% state tax credit

as well as the federal charita-

ble tax deduction.

Youth Engaged in Service Grants

Sponsored by Monsanto & Business Circle Members

Let’s say, “YES” to young people who want to make their communities bet-

ter places to work, play and live through community service projects. A

new grants program, Youth Engaged in Service (YES), was created just for

youth.

In the first round of granting, two projects were funded that would encour-

age five young ladies to focus their efforts in helping those less fortunate.

They made life better for 384 people and brought new energy and meaning

to the term, “philanthropists”.

Coins for Christmas - Fourth grade sisters collect coins and cans to pur-

chase items for homeless families while engaging most of their Grant Ele-

mentary peers to pitch in and help, too.

PROM - Princesses Reaching Out in Muscatine, or PROM, knew that some

teens wouldn’t be able to attend prom because of hardships their families

were experiencing. So they came to the Community Foundation and to-

gether with the school, made ten high school seniors’ dreams come true.

Free Supplies for Nonprofits

Sponsored by Central State Bank

$64,509 in supplies benefitted over 30

nonprofit groups serving youth and

those in need. As a member of a nation-

al resource exchange program, we dis-

tribute truckloads of supplies each year

free of charge. This helps nonprofits

lower their cost of operations while

serving clients.

Dental Services for Underserved

First yr sponsor Bob & JoAnn Jensen

Nearly 1,661 area residents received

dental care through a continuing part-

nership with Dr. Nathan Olson, Delta

Dental of Iowa and the Community

Foundation. The FIND project recruits

dentists to rural communities bringing

dental services to the elderly, at-risk and

underserved.

Great Initiative Award Sponsored by SSAB

Youth Initiative Award sponsored by Business Circle

We love shining a light on the great ini-

tiatives in our communities. These

awards were inspired by Shirley Drake

who was the spark in many lasting initia-

tives. They encourage volunteerism and

recognize those who have taken the ini-

tiative to enhance quality of life with

charitable projects and programs.

People Who Care

Matching people who care to causes

that matter is at the heart of donor ad-

vised funds. It’s easier than you think to

create an endowment with as little as

$10,000. You get the joy of granting,

the services we provide and reap the tax

advantages that can only come from an

Iowa community foundation.

County Endowment Re-granting

$99,245 was awarded to 48 worthy caus-

es. These state funds are only available

to qualified accredited community foun-

dations like ours without gaming facili-

ties in the county they serve.

Serving as a Charitable Partner

An intelligent, cost-effective way to un-

dertake charitable projects, a partnership

with us lets you focus on your mission

while we offer you an array of valuable

services from investments to planned

giving and donor tax breaks.

Building Sustainable Resources

Endowments for area organizations and

important causes provide annual reve-

nue streams - now and forever - while

donors enjoy 25% state tax credits plus

federal charitable deductions.

Cares & Shares

Endowment

The Cares & Shares Endow-

ment within the Community

Foundation was created for

those who care deeply

about their community and are willing to share their

good fortune to ensure its bright future.

This endowment fund serves as a permanent resource

to address critical needs and enhance the quality of

life - now and for generations. It is directed by the local

Board of Directors of the Community Foundation ensur-

ing that your gift stays here to assist Muscatine County

residents.

Since its inception in 2008, grants from annual earnings

on investment have made it possible to aid flood vic-

tims, help those suffering from abuse and provide

meals to the hungry. It’s provided needed financial

support to offer opportunities in the arts and heritage,

provide training for nonprofit groups, distribute free

supplies to the disadvantaged and made an impact

on every program and service the Community Founda-

tion offers.

A gift to the Cares & Shares Endowment is a gift that

keeps on giving year in and year out. Gifts are eligible

for a 25%

State of Iowa

tax credit in

addition to

any federal

charitable tax

deduction for

which you

may qualify.

When you donate to an endowment at the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine, you’re not only building a stronger community, you’re reducing your taxes. Earn 25% state tax credit for each dona-tion, plus the federal tax deduction for charitable giving. Others have found the joy and value in contributing to an endowment at the Community Foundation. In 2013, donors made 120 contribu-tions to 13 endowments totaling $188,103 in gifts. They received a total of $47,026 in state tax credits plus federal charita-ble tax deductions. Here’s an example if you’d like to

take advantage of this tax credit:

At its heart, the Community Foundation of

Greater Muscatine does two things: First, it helps

philanthropists of all sizes make an impact, and

second, it helps nonprofit organizations focus

more on their mission and less on finance, invest-

ments, and fundraising.

This service to nonprofits is what drives my pas-

sion for the organization. Time and again I have

seen nonprofits in Muscatine use the Community

Foundation as a way to unlock their potential

and free themselves of specific burdens. Wheth-

er it is for a one-time project like the Civil War

Memorial or an ongoing institution like the Mus-

catine Center for Social Action, the Community

Foundation provides an array of easy-to-use ser-

vices created with the unique needs of volun-

teers and nonprofit staff in mind.

I am so pleased with how the Community Foun-

dation of Greater Muscatine has evolved over

the last 15 years, and I am honored to serve as

the new board president.
