2013-14 S EASON PREV I EWBehind the direction of head coach Brian Etkzin, the Cleveland State

women’s tennis team is poised to have a standout season during 2013-14, as the Vikings have a well-rounded group of veterans and newcomers.

“This season we have a great mix of youth and experience on the team and if the two generations can come together we could have an excellent year,” Etzkin said. “I am really excited for the season, and as of right now this team has the potential to be the best team in the history of the program.”

The 2013-14 Vikings can be most easily described in two parts - Vet-erans and Youth Movement - giving CSU a good balance of experience and rookies, which will hopefully prove to be a winning combination.

the veterans Kara Sherwood, who is closing in on the all-time wins list at CSU,

enters her senior season with 58 singles wins and is one of three seniors who will be trying to lead the Vikings to their first-ever Horizon League championship.

“After a great junior season, Kara will move up in the singles lineup this year and I know she is ready for that challenge,” Etzkin said. “It has been great to see her leadership skills and her tennis game develop throughout her first three years, and we will definitely count on her in the singles lineup and to anchor a doubles team.”

Alex Bush returns for her final campaign as a Viking, looking to im-prove on her all-time wins position. Over her first three seasons Bush has amassed 45 singles victories and has been a crucial part of the CSU lineup.

“Coming into her senior year, Alex is really hitting a good ball, and we will look for her leadership and experience to pay off during her final season,” Etzkin said. “She has experience playing at every position in the lineup, and will start the season off in the bottom half, but certainly has the ability to move up before the season is over.”

Alex Power had offseason shoulder surgery and will spend the fall season doing rehab and will be ready to play when the spring season comes around. Power enters her final season with 52 career singles wins, ranking 10th on the all-time wins list at CSU.

“Alex has developed over her first three seasons and she will defi-nitely be fighting for a spot in the singles and doubles lineups this year,” Etzkin said. “There are a lot of uncertainties after having shoulder surgery, but hopefully she will be able to make a mark in the lineup this year and help lead the team to a championship. She is a hard worker and fighter, so I would expect to see her give it her all throughout the season.”

Mathilde Orange returns for her second season with the Vikings, after earning All-League honors as a freshman. Orange was CSU’s top singles player last year and will look to continue that strong play this season.

“Mathilde is another player who has experience playing at the top of the singles lineup, and also has experience with closing out matches, which will certainly help us throughout the year,” Etzkin said. “This year she will start lower in the lineup but will pick up as the season goes on, and will certainly be a force wherever she lands.”

After missing the majority of the spring schedule last season due to an injury, Ellen Folkers returns for her sophomore season hoping to play at 100% throughout the year.

“Despite coming off a season in which she played through a painful injury, Ellen is playing some of her best tennis right now,” Etzkin said. “She is a fierce competitor and wants to be in the singles lineup for us, and will certainly get opportunities to secure a spot throughout the sea-son.”

the youth movement Lauren Golick is the first of the three members of the ‘Youth Move-

ment’, and joins the Vikings after an excellent high school career which was capped by winning the state singles title as a senior. With the ad-dition of Golick, CSU now has two Ohio state champions on the roster, joining Kara Sherwood.

“Lauren has the ability to be a big time player for us and to start the season she will play at the top of the singles lineup,” Etzkin said. “Lauren has the ability to control points off the ground and has a very good serve that she can get some free points with.”

Princess Gbadamosi is the second newcomer for the 2013-14 season, and continues a strong line of Viking players from the state of Texas. She joins the Vikings as an excellent doubles player - having won the Texas state championship as a senior.

“I am really excited about Princess’ game, she is a good all-around player and can win in different ways and will play near the top of the lineup in both singles and doubles,” Etzkin said. “She has natural leader-ship skills and will hopefully continue to develop these and her tennis game throughout her career.”

Victoria Bensimon rounds out the ‘Youth Movement’, joining the Vi-kings after leading her high school team to back-to-back top-five finishes in the Florida State Tournament.

“Victoria is an aggressive all-court player who has a big upside, and could end up playing at the top of the singles lineup by the time the sea-son is over,” Etzkin said. “She has a well-rounded game and is develop-ing a weapon or two and will contribute in both singles and doubles for us.”

heaD coach // 12th season

Over the past 11 seasons Brian Etzkin has turned the Cleveland State women’s tennis program into one of the top teams in the Horizon League – with the Vikings competing for a league title two out of the last three seasons. Etzkin has guided the Vikings to nine straight winning seasons, and will be striving for the same level of excellence during his 12th year at the helm of the Vikings.

Etzkin became the head coach at CSU prior the 2002-03 season, taking over a women’s program that was in dire need of rebuilding. And the change came quickly, as the Vikings won 10 matches during Etzkin’s second year and have finished .500 or better in nine of his 11 seasons.

The winningest coach in school history, Etzkin reached an impressive milestone last season, recording his 150th career victory with the women’s program. Entering the 2013-14 season, Etzkin has an overall record of 151-140 at the helm of the Vikings.

Etzkin’s accolades have earned him a pair of Horizon League Coach of the Year awards, as he earned the honor following the 2011 and 2004 seasons. He has also mentored two women’s players to the all-league first team, as Sarah Galon (2004, `05, `06, `07) and Catrine Bjerrehus (2009, ‘10, ‘11, ‘12) earned a spot on the team during all four years of their Viking careers.

The Vikings are just as impressive off the court, as Alex Power, Ellen Folkers and Nicole Janek were named ITA Scholar-Athletes last year. The honor is the third straight for Power, who is looking to become the fifth Viking under Etzkin to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete honors during all four years of their CSU career. The women’s team has also received ITA All-Academic Team honors seven times under Etzkin, most recently following the 2010-11 season.

Three Vikings have also been awarded the Horizon League Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award, including Sarah Galon who was a two-time recipient (2006, 2007). Charlotte Gibbons (2010) and Morgan Ungerott (2008) also earned the accolade during their time at CSU.

Etzkin has also encouraged his players to become community leaders. Over the past 11 years three members of the women’s ten-nis team have been officers in the Cleveland State Student-Athlete Advisory Council – Nicole Janek, Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott.

In addition, the Vikings have gotten involved in many community service projects over the years, including working at the Cleve-land Food Bank, adopting a second grade class at Marion-Sterling Elementary school in downtown Cleveland and spending time at the Devon Oaks Assisted Living facility.

Etzkin was born in Cleveland and raised in Wooster, but returned to Northeast Ohio after working as an assistant men’s tennis coach at Michigan State. While with the Spartans, he assisted in every aspect of the program, including serving as recruit-ing coordinator.

He also worked as the assistant tennis pro-fessional at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facil-ity in addition to being the Tennis Direc-tor and Head Pro at Walnut Hills Country Club. Prior to working with Michigan State, Etzkin spent two years as an as-sistant coach for the men’s and women’s teams at Western Illinois University from 1998-2000.

Frank Polito returns for his second season as an assistant coach with the Cleveland State women’s tennis team during 2013-14, looking to build on last year’s success with CSU’s top-four players re-turning and a strong incoming class.

Polito joined the Cleveland State coaching staff during the 2012-13 season after a six-year stint as an assistant coach with the women’s tennis team at Georgia. During his tenure, the Bulldogs posted an overall record of 139-29, won two regular season SEC championships, claimed three SEC tourna-

ment titles and advanced past the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament three times. Georgia also finished the year ranked in the ITA top-10 five out of his six years. For his efforts with the Bulldogs, Polito was named the 2008 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis As-sociation South Region Assistant Coach of the Year, and promoted to associate head coach in September of 2010.

Prior to his time in Athens, Polito spent two years as an assistant coach at Kansas (2004-06) and two years in the same position at Ohio State (2001-03). With the Jayhawks, Polito’s coaching and recruiting efforts helped make dramatic improvements on and off the court, culminating with ITA All-Academic Team honors and an ITA No. 59 ranking following the 2006 season. At Ohio State, Polito led the Buckeyes to a combined record of 31-19 and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2002, he was honored as the ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

Polito also served as the head coach at Louisiana-Monroe (1999-2001), head coach at Akron (1997-99), assistant coach and interim head coach at Kansas (1996-97), head coach at Sienna Heights (1995) and head coach at Eastern Michigan (1990-95).

Polito is a 1990 graduate of Eastern Michigan, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Eagles, and team captain during his senior year. The Lorain, Ohio native earned a bachelor’s degree in telecommunica-tions and film from EMU.

Nicole Janek will begin her first year as a student assistant coach with the Cleveland State tennis teams during 2013-14, after spending four years as a Viking student-athlete. Throughout her career, Janek posted 70 singles victories, ranking her fifth all-time at CSU. She also led the Vikings to back-to-back Horizon League championship match appearances during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.

“I am really pleased to have Nicole working with the teams this season. As a student-athlete she was a vocal leader on the court for us and hopefully that will continue now that she is helping from the sidelines,” head coach Brian Etzkin said.

Janek is currently finishing her degree in middle childhood education.

For the ninth straight season, head coach Brian Etzkin led the Vikings to a win-ning record during 2012-13, as Cleveland State finished the year with a 13-11 mark and a third place finish at the Horizon League Tournament.

CSU started 2012-13 with a strong fall season, as the Vikings had solid show-ings at all four of their fall invitationals. The highlight of the fall season came at the Bowling Green Invitational, with Kara Sherwood and Ellen Folkers both claiming singles titles.

After posting a 1-5 record during the first four weeks of the spring season, Cleveland State rebounded over the next three weeks, winning five straight to stand at 6-5 midway through the spring season. During this span, the Vikings earned victories over Ball State, Oakland, IPFW, Duquesne and Florida Atlan-tic.

Despite this success, the Vikings weren’t able to continue the momentum through the final three matches of non-league play, as they entered Horizon League action with a 6-8 mark.

CSU opened its league schedule with a victory against Detroit, before falling to Youngstown State to even their league record. The Vikings then posted back-to-back victories against Milwaukee and Green Bay, improving their record to 3-1 against league opponents.

After falling to UIC, the Vikings closed out the regular season with three straight victories, including a pair of league wins against Valparaiso and Wright State.

The Vikings entered the 2013 Horizon League Championship as the No. 3 seed and posted a win over Wright State in the first round before falling to second-seeded Youngstown State in the semifinals.

CSU had three players earn all-league honors for their work throughout the season - Mathilde Orange, Alex Bush & Alex Power - marking just the second time in program history that the Vikings had three honorees in the same year.
