Issue Six February 2013-14 Dear L.A. Community, Since coming back from the Chinese New Year holiday, we have been busily preparing for the end of semester assessments and Global Class- room (learning tours). For many of our Year 10 students, this would have been the first taste of what public exam will be like. I hope the assessments can help our students identify their strengths and weaknesses, and therefore be able to focus their efforts accordingly. True to our “Glocalised Curriculum”, the Global Classroom tours this year have included destinations in different parts of the world for field learning, and they are sure to be the eye-openers for our students. For the younger ones, this may also be significant in the sense that it is the first time they travel without their parents. Inline with our IB DP com- mitments, the Cambodia service learning tour is also a groundbreaking initiative, which prepares students for their CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) in the Diploma Programme. I am very much looking forward to hearing about and sharing with the LA community what they have learned out there. Yours Sincerely, Andy, FUNG Wa-chau Principal ELCHK Lutheran Academy

Issue Six February2013-14

Dear L.A. Community,

Since coming back from the Chinese New Year holiday, we have been busily preparing for the end of semester assessments and Global Class-room (learning tours).

Inline with our IB DP com-mitments, the Cambodia service learning tour is also a groundbreaking initiative, which prepares students for their CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) in the Diploma Programme.

I am very much looking forward to hearing about and sharing with the LA community what they have learned out there.

Yours Sincerely,Andy, FUNG Wa-chauPrincipalELCHK Lutheran Academy

School News17 to 27 February 2014Inter-house football Competition

After a glorious display of valour between houses, the winner of inter-house football, the first of many competitions, is settled.

The house teams are very much on a par with each other this year, so much so that most teams held each other to draws in normal time, and victories had to be decided by penalty shootouts. Here is a summary of the results so far:

Y7 & 8:1. Merlot2. Riesling3. Chardonnay4. Shiraz

Y9 & 10: 1. Merlot2. Shiraz3. Riesling4. Chardonnay

Staff Races:1. Riesling2. Shiraz3. Chardonnay 4. Shiraz

Manga Competition:1. Riesling2. Merlot3. Shiraz4. Chardonnay

For the first time in the school’s history, winners of inter-house competitions got to battle the staff team to earn extra points for the house.

Merlot, who beat Shiraz in the final, faced up fair and square against the staff team, which consisted of teachers, ICT, office staff and the Pastoral Care team. The match was fairly even up to the last 5 minutes, that was when the Merlot boys scored 2 quick goals from set pieces and took the victory by storm.

Congratulations to Merlot and watch this space for more “Students Vs Staff” events!

Global Classroom Cambodia Service Learning - Silver Coin & Stationery Donations

24 to 27 February 2014

The PATHS project is now underway!Spearheaded by our social workers, students can look forward to lots of meaningful activities such as leadership camps and service learning in the community.

The Global Classroom to Cambodia is the first service learning tour from our school. As part of the pre-trip learning, the students showed great initiation in col-lecting donations as gifts for the orphanage, high school and local families that we will be visiting.

Responding to the pleads, the whole school happily donated over $1500 worth of spare coins and 12 A4 boxes of stationery. We hope this will be a good reflection upon how fortunate we are and that we learn to count our blessings.

In the unit of “Where we are in Place and Time”, the Year 4 students took on an issue that they were passionate about and attempted to develop resolutions. This has been a rewarding experience for the students as they overcome multiple obstacles and came to under-stand that everyone has the power and responsibility to make a difference in their surrounding community.

Global Classroom Pre-departure Seminars 18 February 2014

With the itineraries of learning toursconfirmed and merely days away from depar-ture, it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty details. Students have conducted pre-trip learning already, so we invited parents to come along and listen to what they need to prepare.

The secondary students are all excited about the learning ahead, whichever part of the world they might be going to. They will have many wonderful things to share with the LA community in the next issue!

Staff Professional Development Day 28 February 2014

The staff professional development was a tale of 2 halves - teachers first learned from Mr. Jonathan, our Head of ICT about how to use Googlesites for effective teaching and collaboration. The other half involved a workshop on equipping teachers with online resources such as QR codes, interactive mindmapping and story-telling sites to engage students in inquiry-based learning.
