From the President

Beth BidlackATLA Board President

Dear ATLA Colleagues and Friends,

During the past year, the work of the ATLA Board of Directors has centered on the theme of “envisioning our future together.” Throughout the year, the Board listened to our membership as we considered our future as an association. To facilitate this work, we have engaged the services of consultant Paul Meyer, President and Co-CEO of Tecker International. In October 2013, Paul talked with the Board, some of the ATLA staff, and the leaders of ATLA’s committees and interest groups about healthy association practices and the strategic alignment of committee and interest group work with ATLA’s Organizational Ends. During the week prior to the Board’s February 2014 meeting, Brenda Bailey-Hainer, ATLA Executive Director, and I attended the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Symposium for Chief Executive and Chief Elected Officers. The event included opportunities to network with other association leaders, to learn strategies for engaging members, and to imagine new models for leadership. The following week, Paul joined the Board meeting again to facilitate a conversation that included the following topics: the lifespan of associations, board members’ duties and responsibilities, core values of associations, four-part board agendas, the importance of environmental scans, and how to create goals for the future. In June 2014, the Board continued our work with Paul in strategic planning and direction setting for the association, work which culminated in this statement: “In keeping with the Association’s mission and its express commitment to diversity, the Board moves to explore ways the association can be more responsive to and inclusive of libraries and librarians representative of a broad spectrum of religious traditions and perspectives.” We look forward to continuing our conversations with Paul Meyer and the ATLA membership during the coming year.

Part of strategic thinking is securing funding for that future. This year, Brenda has once again set aside funds for research and development. The Endowment Committee has renewed its efforts to raise money for our association. After much careful discussion, the Board proposed an increase to individual and student membership dues, which have not been increased in nearly twenty years. The Board’s proposal will appear on the January 2015 ballot.

While much of the year was focused on the future, the Board continued to revise policies and procedures that will assist our current work. For example, we have outlined the responsibilities of Board members and have compiled documentation so that future board candidates will have a clearer understanding of what it means to be an active board member. In addition, the Board continues to refine its procedures for monitoring the performance of our executive director via regular monitoring reports and an annual review. Finally, the Board continued to hone portions of our Board Policy Manual.

On behalf of the Board, thank you to our members, to leaders of our committees and interest groups, and to the ATLA staff for your ongoing support and engagement in the work of our Association. I look forward to another year of thoughtful and rewarding collaboration!

Sincerely,

Beth BidlackATLA Board President

Brenda Bailey-HainerATLA Executive Director

From the Executive Director

Dear ATLA Colleagues and Friends,

ATLA ended fiscal year 2014 on sound financial ground. Actual revenue met budget expectations and expenses came in 15 percent under budget. The majority of ATLA’s revenue continues to originate in its online information products, with additional income from annual membership dues, annual conference registrations and sponsorships, and interest on investments. A year ago ATLA contracted with a development partner to help design and implement a new internal production system that will be used to create our products. Work on that new system continued throughout fiscal year 2014. This new system, which is scheduled to be completed during the first half of next year, will allow ATLA more flexibility in designing and delivering future products. Excess revenue from 2014 will be carried over into fiscal year 2015 to cover the remaining cost of implementing the new system and to continue investment in research and development for new products and services.

In addition to safeguarding revenue from products, efforts are being made to assure supplemental revenue for future use. The Endowment Committee continued its efforts to reach a short term goal of an Endowment Fund valued at $1 million (turn to page 6 for more information.) Throughout the year other association money was re-invested in the association in various ways — by matching gifts to the Endowment Fund, through Member Product Loyalty Program support for annual conference attendance and donations to the Scholarships and Grants Annual Fund, and with grants for regional continuing education programs and Theological Libraries Month, diversity scholarships, and support for Theological Librarianship.

While product revenue underwrites achievement of the mission, the future of ATLA really lies in its membership. Enhancing the development of theological and religious studies libraries and librarianship continues to be a funding priority. New Orleans was the festive location for the truly extraordinary annual conference, with many learning opportunities for all. New faces from around the world graced the conference, bringing a more diverse set of attendees representing different religious traditions and perspectives.

Diversity was also a theme within ATLA’s current products. A particular emphasis has been placed on adding full text published in languages other than English and which covers a variety of religious traditions and faiths. In particular, full text titles in ATLASerials® grew by 16 percent with the addition of thirty-six new titles from around the world.

This year was marked by some significant staff leadership changes. Long-time Director of Production Cameron Campbell retired in December, and Maria Stanton took over leadership of that department in late January. Director of Member Programs Miguel Figueroa left in May and I am serving as Interim while seeking a replacement for him. While we are sad to say farewell to colleagues, departures always open up the possibility for new ideas and perspectives.

The 2014 ATLA Annual Conference opened with inspiring words from Joseph P. Lucia, Dean at Temple University Libraries, who shared the story of creating a vision for a new library building on their campus. The phrase that planners used to describe that vision still resonates with me, “Calling its diverse communities together for inquiry and exploration, interaction and study.” These same words aptly describe the aspirations of ATLA. This year was a year well spent in preparation for just such an envisioned future.

Sincerely,

Brenda Bailey-HainerATLA Executive Director

Scholarship to Promote Diversity in Theological Librarianship

The ATLA Diversity Committee awarded $2,400 in scholarships to two individuals working toward their MLIS degrees. Drew Baker is the Acquisitions Librarian at Claremont School of Theology working toward a Master of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University. Drew has a passion for diversity. Growing up as a lower class Buddhist in a predominantly Christian city, he unfortunately learned to be quiet and to not express his

religious views. As he grew older he began to study religion, diversity, and oppression in an academic environment culminating with his dissertation on Buddhists in the United States. Kindra Morelock is working toward a Master of Library and Information Science degree at University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. Growing up as a Korean adoptee with Caucasian parents, her perspective is middle-class Caucasian-American; however, “I have had the race-based experiences that my fellow Asian-Americans have experienced based solely on the way that I look.” She stated that living and raising her children in the mostly African-American, underprivileged East Garfield Park neighborhood in Chicago, immediately increases diversity in whatever situation she is in.

Endowment CommitteeThe Endowment Committee informs the membership of the purpose of the Endowment Fund, the cultivation of donor relationships, and the solicitation of major gifts through planned (estate) gifts and other funding sources.

At the end of the fiscal year, the Fund had a balance of $416,032, an increase of $85,800 over the previous year as the result of increased contributions in conjunction with accumulated interest.

On October 17, 2013, the ATLA Board, all ATLA committee members, and chairs of interest groups participated in a one-day training session facilitated by Paul Meyer of Tecker International.

ATLA Board, Committee members, and Interest Group chairs met in the fall of 2013.

The mission of the American Theological Library Association is to foster the study of theology and religion by enhancing the development of theological and religious studies libraries and librarianship.

Established in 1946, the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) is a professional association of nearly 1,000 individual, institutional, and affiliate members providing programs, products, and services for theological and religious studies libraries and librarians. As part of fulfilling its mission, ATLA creates electronic resources to support the scholarly study of religion and theology.

ATLA exists so that:

Libraries and librarians are increasingly effective and valued partners in the academic study of religion, theology, and ministry.

Subsidiary Ends 1 and 2 are in ranked order. Below that level, the ends are increasingly specific elaborations, numbered to indicate their relationship to 1 and 2. The ranking of the Ends does not dictate the proportion of resources allocated.

1. Libraries are served by a continuing, prepared, and diverse complement of librarians.

1.1 A sufficient number of qualified librarians serves libraries. 1.2 Librarians at all career stages and specializations have increasing knowledge, abilities and skills.

1.2.1 Librarians are effective advocates for their libraries and the profession. 1.2.2 Collaborative relationships locally, regionally, and throughout the world enhance the preparedness of librarians.

1.3 ATLA reflects the diversity of our communities and institutions, including but not limited to religious, racial, ethnic, and gender divisions.

2. Institutions and individuals have access to primary source material and scholarly resources that are organized, preserved, and made accessible at a reasonable expenditure of funds, time, and resources.

2.1 Libraries, librarians, scholars, students, and religious leaders have access to tools and services that meet current and emerging research needs.

2.1.1 Research and development initiatives successfully address needs for improved and new products and services.

2.1.2 Collaborative initiatives involving members successfully address information-related opportunities and problems.
