The feed stacks are going down, this year has been a bumper crop for the second time in a row. There has been a couple of storms that affected all three provinces but even so , this year is not out of the ordinary as far as weather goes, we have seen worse. Cattle are still moving through the system at a reason- able price, for any of us with culls or commercial cat- tle. The Blonde breed is ahead of so many with the meat to bone ratio. Once this fact is well known, the meat packing industry would be well advised to look for the Blondes or cross breeds that come thru the auction barns. For now, keep warm and dry and have an excellent calving season. Pat Filz 2013 Alberta blonde field day The date and location of our 2013 Field Day has yet to be determined. 2012-2013 Alberta Blonde d’Aquitaine Bull Test 112 day Report - March 23, 2013 Cattleland Feedyards - Strathmore, Alberta

Pen Number: D45 Number of Bulls: 16 Test Start: December 1, 2012

Alberta Blonde Bulls on Test at Strathmore The Alberta Blonde Association bull test is now complete at Cattleland Feedyards near Strathmore, Alberta. Five Blonde breeders contributed 16 bulls for the test. There are Fullblood and Purebred bulls in the test, with a majority being polled. They were delivered in late October for a warm-up period to let them adjust to new surroundings, new feed and to help even out some of the environmental weight differences of the bulls before the test started. The official test started December 1, 2012 and will conclude March 23, 2013. The bulls are weighed every 28 days during the test. If you would like to have the results sent directly to you, please contact The Alberta Blonde Associa-tion. The bulls are available for purchase by private treaty, so if you are interested in any of the bulls on test, contact the contributor.

The Manitoba Bull Test Station at Douglas, Manitoba is owned and operated by the Manitoba Beef Cattle Performance Association Inc. The test station is a non-profit organization that has been in operation for over 40 years. The goal is to develop bulls and heifers to meet the needs of the ever changing cattle industry for both the purebred and commercial cattlemen. Visitors are welcome all year round to view the facilities and talk to the staff about programs available. During the test season visitors can get statistics on the bulls and heifers on site and look at quality livestock. This year there are 200 bulls on test from nine different breeds (Angus -Black & Red, Blonde, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Limousin, Maine Anjou, Saler, Simmental and Shorthorn).

Alberta on Top at the 2012 National The 2012 National was held in Victoriaville, Quebec during the Expo Agricole de Victoriaville (October 6-12). Cattle were exhibited by breeders from Alberta, Ontario and of course Quebec. WSS Xtravagant 66X with her heifer calf at side sired by WSS Xplosive 31X was named the 2012 National Champion Female. She was exhibited by her Quebec owner Ryland Cleary who had pur-chased her from Willow Springs Stock Farm as one of the high selling females in the 2011 National Sale. Xtravagant has had a very successful show career the last two years, winning numerous awards in Eastern Canada.

WSS Yttrium 3Y was named the 2012 Reserve Na-tional Champion Female. She was exhibited by Wil-low Springs Stock Farm. Yttrium began the long trip east in early September, was shown in Ontario & Quebec and culminated it as the high selling animal at the 2012 Cream of the Crop Sale in Ontario. Paul Ferguson of Crystal Farms was the high bidder in a hotly contested battle for ownership of this out-standing heifer. Several other animals from Forty Acre Blondes, Lit-tle Creek Farms (the Kamelchuks) and Willow Springs Stock Farm were also well received at the Cream of the Crop Sale, including Little Creek Yochanen the high selling bull to James Graham of New Brunswick.

Alberta to Host the 2013 National Plans are underway for the Alberta Blonde d’Aquitaine Association to host the 2013 National Blonde Show, Sale and AGM. The Show will be held in conjunction with the Olds Fall Classic October 4-6, 2013. The show entry deadline is Sept 15, 2013 and all entries are made on-line at the Olds Ag. Society website (http://www.oldsagsociety.com/fallclas.html). A few things I wanted to touch on are the fact that the Alberta Association will be covering entry fees and providing a prize money payout (exact payout still to be determined). Although the Olds prize list does not separate calves/yearlings into Senior (Jan-March born) and Junior (after April 1st) we have received permission to run additional classes to accommodate more age ranges; so don’t worry about your April calf having to show in a class against January borns. There are also plans for a private treaty/silent auction sale facilitated by the Association. Sale animals would be charged a flat fee to be entered into a pri-vate treaty catalogue that would be mailed out to Blonde enthusiasts across the country. Again the ex-act details are still to be worked out.

The official host hotel is the Ramada Inn Olds - Di-rect (403) 556-5900 or for Booking 1-800-854-9517. There are rooms blocked under Canadian Blonde Association until Sept 1st Website: http://www.ramada.com/hotels/alberta/olds/ramada-olds/hotel-overview As always we rely on sponsorships to make the event run. If you are interested in sponsoring the event, know of someone who might be, have more questions about the event or would like to become more involved in planning/participation, please con-tact the Alberta Blonde Association.

Tentative schedule: Thurs Oct 3 Cattle arrive 9 am - 9 pm Friday Oct 4 National Blonde Show 2 pm Hospitality in the barns after the show Saturday Oct 5 National Meeting 1-4 pm @ Ramada Inn Banquet 6 pm Sunday Oct 6 All-Breed Jackpot Calf Classes All-Breed Champions Parade Release 5 pm
