Many people believe that the moon and the signs of the zodiac influence plant growth and
other farm activities; writings attesting to this date to the Roman Empire, ancient Egypt and
even earlier. In general, crops which produce their harvest above ground should be planted
during the Waxing Moon, or when the moon is between new and full. Crops which produce
their harvest underground should be planted during the Waning Moon, or when the moon is
between full and new. But it is also important to note which sign of the zodiac the moon
occupies, certain signs are much better suited for different activities than others. Below is an
explanation of the moon’s phases, the 12 signs of the zodiac, and their effects. Regardless of
the moon, consider your local climate & weather conditions before engaging in garden work.

January Weather & Farming Lore
d A summerish January, a winterish spring.
d St. Hilary’s Day is the coldest day of winter.
d If the Sun shines brightly on St. Vincent’s Day, we shall have more wine than water this year.
d If St. Paul’s Day be fine and clear, it doth
betide a happy year; But if by chance it then should rain, it will make dear all kinds of grain. Copyright © 2012 by Elliott Publishing, LLC

Most pitiless and stark the winter grew
Meanwhile, beneath a sky of cloudless blue,
And sun that warm’d not; till they nigh forgot
The green lush spring, the summer rich and hot,
The autumn fragrant with slow ripening fruit.

February Weather & Farming Lore d If February gives much snow, a fine summer it
doth foreshow.
d On the eve of Candlemas Day, winter gets stronger or passes away.
d If Candlemas Day be fine and clear, corn and
fruit will then be dear.
d If in February there be no rain, ‘tis neither good
for hay nor grain.
d If it freezes on St. Matthias, it will freeze for a month.
d When the cat in February lies in the sun, she
will creep behind the stove in March. d February rain is as good as manure.
Thus Nature of the Spring will dream
While south winds thaw; but soon again
Frost breathes upon the stiff’ning stream,
And numbs it into ice: the plain
Soon wears its mourning garb of white;
And icicles, that fret at noon,
Will eke their icy tails at night,
Beneath the chilly stars and moon.
John Clare

Slayer of Winter, art thou here again?
O welcome, thou that bringest summer nigh!
The bitter wind makes not thy victory vain.
Welcome, O March! Whose kindly days & dry
Make April ready for the throstle’s song!
Thou first redresser of the winter’s wrong!

O June, O June, that we desired so,
Across the river thy soft breezes blow,
Sweet with the scent of beanfields far
away
Above our heads rustle the aspens gray,
Calm is the sky with harmless clouds
beset,
No thought of storm the morning vexes
yet.

The Moon in July
July, the month of Summer’s prime,
Again resumes his busy time;
Scythes tinkle in each grassy dell,
Where solitude was wont to dwell;
And meadows, they are mad with noise,
Of laughing maids and shouting boys,
Making up the withering hay
With merry hearts as light as play.
John Clare

The Moon in August
Now came fulfillment of the year’s desire,
The tall wheat colour’d by the August fire,
Grew heavy-headed, dreading its decay,
And blacker grew the elm-trees day by day.
With peach and apricots the garden wall
Was odorous and the pears began to fall.

November Weather & Farming Lore
d If All Saints’ Day brings out winter, St. Martin’s Day bring out Indian Summer.
d Ice in November brings mud in December.
d November thunder, a fertile year to come. d At St. Martin’s Day, winter is on his way.
d Winds north-west at Martinmas, severe
winter to come.
d As November 21st, so the whole winter.
d As St. Catherine, so will be next February.
November’s sky is chill and drear,
November’s leaf is red and sere.
The sheep beneath the lowering heaven,
To shelter’d dale and down are driven,
Where yet some faded herbage pines,
And yet a watery sunbeam shines:
In meek despondency they eye
They wither’d sward and wintry sky.
Sir Walter Scott

Heap on more wood! — the wind is chill;
But let it whistle as it will,
We’ll keep our Christmas merry still.
Each age has deem’d the new-born year
The fittest time for festal cheer.
