Centennial Family AwardsOn Sunday, May 5, we honored two longtime Lake Forest

families with the Centennial Family Awards: the Cascarano fam-ily, nominated by Carrie Spezzano, and the Lanners-Rose family, nominated by Madeline G. Mobile.

e awards were given at the 2013 Annual Meeting which washeld at Everett School. Jan MacDougal, chair of Everett School’sCentenary Committee, presented a lively review of the schoolwhich will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2014. e Cen-tennial Family Awards have honored twenty-six families sincethey began in 2006.

2013 Centennial Family honoree, the Rose-Lanners Family. When Joseph Lanners marriedIrene Rose in Lake Forest in 1931,both their families had been liv-ing in town since before the turnof the century. And both familiesmade extra efforts to give back tothe community where they wereborn: Joseph Lanners and his sis-ter-in-law Madeline Rose organ-ized and directed the Lake ForestDay children’s parade from 1931until 1983 – over fifty years.Joseph also founded the first BoyScout Troop at the School of St.Mary, in 1930.

2013 Centennial Family honoree, the Cascarano Family. The Cascarano family immigrated to the United States from Italy in the1890s. Antonio and Celeste Cascarano and their nine children arrivedin Lake Forest in 1910. Antonio worked as a gardener on the J. OgdenArmour estate. His family quickly became a fixture in Lake Forest, withhis children and grandchildren making their marks in the communitythrough crafts and professions of all kinds: landscape design, upholstery, produce delivery, the railroad, and Christmas trees, to name just a few.

Board member Robert Banks presides over the Trial of the Century.

Mystery of the Gardener’sDaughterOur program Mystery of the Gardener’s Daughter shared the details surrounding the 1916 “Trial of the Century” about thedeath of the young teen from Lake Forest, Marion Lambert.

Judge Robert Banks presided over the program and the audience cast their votes at the end—was William Orpet guilty or innocent? The modern-day jurors agreed with the original verdict of “not guilty”.

To advertise the program, the Historical Society produced a mock newspaper for the year 1916. The newspaper carried all the news of the day, much of it researched using one-of-a kinditems in the museum collection. The newspaper was distributedto every household and business in Lake Bluff and Lake Forest.

Businesses that had been in the community since 1916 were kind enough to sponsor the newspaper and they are listed later in this annual report.

CollectionsWe began a full scale inventory of the museum collection to

enhance the catalog records and to identify conservation needs.Juliet Stein-Davies joined the staff as Collections Inventory Coor-dinator to assist with the major undertaking. Historical Societymembers Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Koss made a gi for the purchase ofa transcription machine that will allow us to transcribe oral his-tory cassette tapes for permanent placement in the archives.

Mystery Photo MondayIn connection with the inventory, we began “Mystery Photo

Monday” on our Facebook page to ask for assistance in identifyingcertain photos in the collection. Here’s one of our success stories. Our Facebook helpers identified the baseball team shown abovein an unlabeled, undated photo. ey were mostly members of the LFHS class of 1974, and the photo was taken c. 1970.

Pictured are: Back row: Coach Bob Zaugg, Joe Kopsick, JohnBurns, Greg Andrew, Pat Gallagher, unknown, Matt Duguid,Kurt Bokowitz, Steve Fennel, unknown. Front Row: unknown,Dave Swarthout, unknown, Ed Burns. If you have more informa-tion, let us know on Facebook!

ProgramsTo celebrate our own 40th anniversary, we offered three free

walking tours of Lake Forest High School, Lake Forest Academyand Lake Forest College.

In connection with the publication of the new book West LakeForest, authors Susan Kelsey, Arthur Miller and Shirley Paddockshared their research and stories at a program at Elawa Farm attended by close to 100 people. e theme of West Lake Foresthas inspired a number of programs to continue through 2014.

A very special tour of Crab Tree Farm was offered in May witha unique twist. To complement the tour, Chef John des Rosiers ofInovasi restaurant created a luncheon menu inspired by Crab TreeFarm’s own period cookbooks. Members received first notice ofthe tour and it quickly sold out.

Our lectures spanned a variety of topics from Barat College toWorld War I soldier George Alexander McKinlock. In January, wecommemorated the 50th anniversary of the closing of the NorthShore Interurban electric railway. Several attendees made donationsto fund the conservation of an important collection of glass negative slides in the collection of the Historical Society. Theslides depict the moving of McKinley Road away from the NorthShore to eliminate the need to run the tracks on the street.

Smaller exhibits were hosted in the museum lobby while themain exhibit space is being used for the collections inventory. e exhibit “Herbarium Abstractions” was put together by LakeForest College student Victoria Jones from the Elizabeth TeterLunn herbarium collection of the college. e Historical Societyopened an exhibit of paintings of Crab Tree Farm by three localartists: Bart Woloson, Katie Hale and Jill Pilarski.
