The Gift of a Garden—Marie’s Story

Seniors’ Resource Center (SRC) is focused on giving back to the community and at 102 years old, Marie Smith, shares these same values.

Marie has received services from our In-Home Care staff twice every week since 2002. A few years ago, Marie fell and became unable to go downstairs where her laundry machine is located. Also, as she ages, lifting things has bebecome very difficult.

With ve generations of family and SRC beside her, Marie gets a lot of help to keep her living independently in her home. Her granddaughter is a full-time care partner and her son visits her daily. With SRC’s assistance, Marie can spend more quality time with her family care partners doing what she loves most; gardening.

Before moving to Colorado in 1986, Marie spent her life on a farm in Nebraska with her husband and three children. They owned three greenhouses and Marie made ower arrangements for weddings, funerals and just about anything else.

“My plants were so good; we did something special,” said Marie. “People would come to us from all over the state. I was always working in the greenhouses. I love to work and it’s frustrating not being able to anymore.”

Each summer Marie plants an abundant garden lled with a variety of vegetables. Throughout the summer, she donates her garden’s produce to a local food bank a few miles from her house.

“I h“I have 21 rows of vegetables in my garden,” said Marie. “I have peppers, carrots, cabbage, beans, tomatoes, kale, broccoli and radishes… and I give it all away. I just like to help people and that’s how I help my community.”

As Marie turns 103 next year, she is still able to live independently in her home and spend time tending to her garden with the help of her family and friends. Just as Marie likes to help others and give back to the communitythrough her gifted green thumb, SRC does the same by helping seniors maihelping seniors maintain their dignity and quality of lifethrough all of our services.

The Gift of Choice – Ann’s Story From Evergreen to Wheat Ridge, Ann Piro has been a dedicated participant in our Adult Day Program, and her daughter Donna, doesn’t ever want to lose the outstanding service SRC provides for her mom.

Ann grew up in New York City and raised her family on Long Island. The family took ski trips to Colorado and it was during those trips Ann and her husband decided they wanted to live in the mountains. They moved to Evergreen in 1996. As Ann aged, she suffered from health problems and the loss of her husband, being independent became more difficult each day.

Ann started going to the Evergreen Adult Day and Respite program twice each week but both Ann and Donna desired to move closer to the Denver Metro area, without losing their services from SRC.

““We wanted to stay with SRC and that was the primary reason we moved to the location we did,” said Donna. “I wanted everything to be done through Seniors’ Resource Center because the agency is so great to deal with and my mom is denitely happy here.”

Not only has Ann been a part of our Adult Day program in Evergreen and Wheat Ridge over the past 4 years, she also uses our transportation.

“The bus drivers are so helpful and friendly,” Ann said. “I feel safe on the bus and they come right up to my door.”

SinSince 2012, Ann has been using SRC transportation to and from Adult Day in Wheat Ridge, three times every week.

“I look forward to going to Adult Day. They have activities, entertainment and games,” said Ann. “The rst thing we do of course, thank God, is they give us coffee and breakfast, and that wakes us all up. Then we exercise and then I go to my favorite activity, art.”

Ann is an exceptional artist and has received 4 awards from the Alzheimer’s’ Association for her watercolor artwork in the Memories in the Making® class, offered every Monday morning.

Donna has also beneted from Ann’s attendance at SRC. She has been Ann’s caregiver for the last 20 years and the services SRC provides have improved her quality of life dramatically.

“I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have Seniors Resource Center,” Ann said. “It’s very difficult when you are by yourself, and when mom is at program, I feel comfortable, relaxed and thrilled for her.”

The Gift of Volunteerism— Esther’s Story

Esther Weiner, a volunteer receptionist at SRC Southwest, cannot drive and has been using SRC’s transportation services for over eight years. If she couldn't volunteer or receive rides from our transportation department, she would be stuck at her son’s house while he is at work. Both rides and the opport-unity to volunteer have greatly improved her life—and help SRC as well.

“In the time between when my husband died and the time I started volunteering at Seniors’ Resource Center (SRC) I was the saddest lady on Earth,” said Esther. “SRC has changed my quality of life and it means the world to me.”

Shirley Sadowski, Manager of SRC Southwest, greatly appreciates everything Esther does. She gave Esther the responsibility of contacting 129 SRC senior volunteers once a month. The seniors she contacts knit clothing for the homeless, help out within their churches, assist their next-door neighbors and provide support for many other vital seservices for seniors.

All of these volunteers love Esther and look forward to her call. And in turn, Esther lets them know how much they are valued by SRC.

“She works at SRC from 10:00am until 2:30pm and would stay until we closed if she could,” Shirley said. “She truly is a wonderful woman.”

Esther immensely enjoys her job at SRC Southwest.

“I would be lost without SRC,” Esther said. “The drivers are fantastic and there are just no no words to describe Shirley. She is out of this world; she has the patience of a saint, an open mind and loves what she does. She denitely has changed my outlook on life.”

35 years in Review

2010s SRC opens a Southwest Satellite location, offering an abundance of services. SRC is chosen as the recipient of the national Advocacy Award by Leading Age at their annual conference in Washington, D.C. Through a successful Capital Campaign, the new 17,000 square foot Adult Day & Respite Services Center opens at the Wheat Ridge headquarters. Gov. John Hickenlooper chooses SRC as the location to showcase and sign the SB-111, the Elder Abuse Bill and SB-127, funding for Older Americans. The Agency celebrates 35th years of serving seniors. SRC implements the CHORES program, which provides a deep cleaning service to seniors.

2000-2010 SRC launches our official website at www.SRCaging.org.

Mark T. Starr Center in Lakewood and an extension services site in Evergreen are founded to offer services for adults with developmental disabilities, ages 18-40.

SRC Co-sponsors Senior Reach, a program intended to identify and treat depression and other mental health challenges faced by the isolated elderly.

SRC embarks upon a Capital Campaign to build a new Center and expand our capacity to serve the community.

SRC is selected to participate in CATCH Healthy Habits, an inter- generational, evidence- based program designed to promote activity and healthy food choices in after school settings throughout the metro area.

SRC is selected as the Non-Prot of the Year by the West Chamber.
