Dear Friends,

Every spring, The Arc of Monmouth produces an annual report, summarizing the achievements of the previous fi s-cal year. In Fiscal Year 2013 (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013) over 1,300 individuals were served at 20 locations in Monmouth County.

Fiscal year 2013 presented challenges both fi scal (funding cutbacks) and physical (fl ood damage from Superstorm Sandy). This report dwells not on the obstacles, but on the achievements of each department that makes up The Arc of Monmouth’s network of resources.

This report also provides a clear picture of the wide breadth of services offered by The Arc of Monmouth. Whether you are a supporter, family member, volunteer or an individual served by The Arc, please take pride in the part you have played in helping us all to achieve.

Sincerely,

Mary Scott Roger TrendowskiExecutive Director Board President

The Mission of The Arc of Monmouth

To improve the lives of persons with intel-lectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families. This is accomplished through advocacy, services and supports, cooperation with community partners and community education. The Arc of Monmouth also works to prevent the causes and effects of I/DD.

Our Vision

The activities of The Arc will lead to persons with I/DD resid-ing, learning, working, worship-ing, recreating and socializing in quality inclusive settings of their own choosing. Families of persons with I/DD will be well informed and confi dent of community sup-port.

EMPLOYMENT SERVICESSnapshot: Job placement in the community, with continued support to ensure job satisfaction and retention. Employment also runs the Red Horse Art Gallery at the Freehold Raceway Mall, which showcases the work of artists with I/DD.

Number of persons served: 185

Achievement Highlights:

Kach (Keep Achieving at Brookdale) May 2013 saw the fi rst graduating class of this three-year college experience at Brookdale Community College. Many graduates have now found employment in the community, while others are continuing their education at Brookdale.

Zachary Stroik, a student currently in his fi nal year of this program, has applied and been accepted to The College of New Jersey’s Career and Community Studies program. This is a highly competitive, liberal studies program designed to prepare students for adult life through academic rigor, career discovery and preparation, and peer socialization.

Independent Living Program (ILP)With the assistance of ILP, Susan Haddow took a bold step by moving from her family home to her own residence. Susan, who is visually impaired, learned to navigate her apartment, access the community services that are so important to her, and use public transporta-tion to travel to her job at A & P. Susan thoroughly enjoys her independence, including her daily fi tness program and her weekly visits to the nail salon.

The Achievement ZoneIn 2013, following the closure of the Dorothy Hersh High School, IFS founded this new transition program for students 18-25 who have completed their high school requirements. Based at The Arc Center, the Achievement Zone picks up where a high school program leaves off, with practical lessons in Career Discovery, Consumer Economics, Fitness, Cooking and life skills such as communication, respect and confl ict resolution.

The Achievement Zone is quickly becoming an important transition program at The Arc of Monmouth, giving students the tools they need to succeed in adult life.

Achievement Highlight: A third year grant from the United Way of Monmouth County (UWMC) has continued a program that assists individuals as they overcome signifi cant barriers to employment, prepare for jobs in the community and pursue the required eligibility of existing funding sources.

Melinie Brown, a participant of this program, began a paid internship at the Windn’Sea restaurant in Highlands which lasted throughout the summer. After graduating from the UWMC program, she qualifi ed for Pre Place-ment Services from the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS). She is now working 5 days a week at the Long Branch School district as a member of the cafeteria staff.

With the support of The Arc staff, Melinie found a job she enjoys and at which she excels.

INDIVIDUAL & FAMILY SUPPORTS (IFS)Snapshot: Guides individuals and their families to the supports and services that best serve their needs, and helps them work toward achieving their personal goals. This department runs an independent living program and several self-directed services including continuing education.

Number of persons served: 342

Page 4: 2013 Annual Report - The Arc of Monmouth

ADULT SERVICESSnapshot: Through fi ve “Achievement Centers”, individuals are offered a variety of activities tailored to their specifi c needs (social skills, vocational and more).

Number of persons served: 135

Achievement Highlight:The old days of the “training center” model are yesterday’s news. The Arc’s Achievement Cen-ters are truly about staff working WITH program participants to help their abilities and talents fl ourish.

Adult Service’s new Achievement Boutique brings the painstaking work of our talented served individuals to fruition, showcasing their painted glassware, woodwork, silk fl oral arrangements and ceramics. Also featured at the Boutique are professionally framed prints from the Pho-tography Group, comprised of served individuals who are becoming skilled with camera work.

Artists in the program have had opportunities to learn from some very talented staff members, in addition to workshops held by guest artists and tours to various galleries in the county. Par-ticipants have been exposed to a number of mediums, forms of expression and approaches to art…and this is now refl ected in the work of these gifted individuals.

“Proceeds from the sale of these wonderful arts and crafts go directly to the participants who created them and to the centers. The program is self-sustaining – a vital asset for the modern nonprofi t agency” – Magdalena Aders

HEALTH SERVICESSnapshot: Comprehensive healthcare (physical, dental and behavioral) in one convenient location.

Number of persons served: 237 Medical, 284 Psychiatric, 127 Counseling

Achievement Highlight: During the spring of 2013, The Arc of Monmouth was invited to be a part of the HealthMeet project. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HealthMeet established a collaboration between chapters of The Arc and health professionals to help people with I/DD live healthier and longer lives.

The program included free health assessments for people with I/DD, including screening for blood pressure, vision, hearing, bal-ance and weight management. Nurses from our own Ambulatory Care Center traveled to various locations throughout the agency to perform these health assessments. Beyond the obvious health benefi ts, the program served as a means of collaboration between the various programs at The Arc of Monmouth.

One of the goals of HealthMeet was to involve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their own healthcare. This was done by asking questions and using assessment techniques that involved the person receiving the assessment. The results of each HealthMeet screening were placed into a database for analysis. The goal of the analysis will be to increase the longevity and improved quality of life for persons with I/DD, and to raise the public, health professional and community consciousness of this great need.

RESIDENTIAL SERVICESSnapshot: 13 residential options, including group homes, supervised apartments and supportive living.

Number of persons served: 96

Achievement Highlight: After several years of plan-ning, 2013 saw the con-struction of Wayside Oaks, The Arc of Monmouth’s fi rst new residential pro-gram in many years. Con-structed through an excit-ing partnership with the township of Tinton Falls and the Richman Group Development Corp, the structure provides affordable senior housing with 16 units reserved for individuals with I/DD. Several residents will be coming to The Arc from the Woodbine Developmental Center in Cape May County.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this innovative housing ven-ture. It is wonderful to see 16 people in their lovely new apartments.” - Mary Scott

Page 5: 2013 Annual Report - The Arc of Monmouth

“I am so happy to be back with all of my friends after being separated in differ-ent places. Being back at WOC means more room to do different jobs and make more money!”

- Dani Zalepka, seated above, demonstrating her job to Senator Jennifer Beck and Executive Director Mary Scott.

Achievement Highlight: WOC was The Arc site hit hardest during Superstorm Sandy. Much of the 30,000 square foot building suffered severe fl ood damage, and while the building was partially reopened after 10 months of construc-tion, fi nal repairs continue into 2014.

The outstanding achievement of WOC was not the rehabilitation of the structure, but rather the perseverance and commitment of every participant, family member, employee, donor and volunteer who stepped in to rebuild WOC.

All were quick to adapt to a constantly changing situation. WOC trainees and their families contended with make-shift worksites that were not always ideal. Staff and volunteers worked double duty, maintaining their normal workload in addition to documenting, cataloguing and recovering the fl ood damaged contents of the building (a herculean task, as this included the merchandise from many of WOC’s business customers). Corporate volunteer teams, including AIG, Georgian Court University, Jersey Cares, Sathya Sai, BNP Paribas and Our Lady of Consolation “Teens on a Mission” were instrumental in tackling a wide variety of repair work.

Very special thanks to the donors who supported the recovery efforts. Board member Hank Hilton called upon friends throughout the U.S. for support. Winter Glow Ball attendees established a special rebuilding fund. Grants from the Robin Hood Foundation, United Way, and Merck, Allstate and Gannett Foundations provided major support. In total, nearly $200,000 was raised to offset the large uninsured portion of necessary repair work. In 2014, a wall commemorating these generous donors will be erected.

“We forget that it’s exercise because we are having so much fun. I look forward to learning something new about nutrition each week, the challenge of a new exer-cise or just the assurance that what I am doing is the right thing.

Everything I learn I know I will use my whole life,

- Colleen Ciecura, Program Participant

and will have a better life because of it!”

RECREATIONSnapshot: Social, athletic and cultural activities including day excursions and extended trips. These events are open to all, and marketed through a quarterly publication, The Recreation Banner.

Number of persons served: 519

Achievement Highlight: The debut of the Slim & Trim Club, a new healthy living initiative that puts an emphasis on the fun side of weight loss and healthy eating. Led by longtime friend of The Arc and 2013 Volunteer of the Year Randi Rae, the program was designed to advance participants’ level of exercise and commitment through various challenges and rewards.

Each week, one or more participants are chosen to receive an award, recognizing an achievement in weight loss, omission of an unhealthy habit, or the addition of a healthy new habit. Due to the phenom-enal response to the class, rewarding just one person each week proved to be very diffi cult. For example, one week, three people had each lost 5 lbs. Another week, 13 out of the 14 people had either lost weight or stayed the same weight.

Randi uses the Wii fi tness system to track this remarkable progress. On their summer trip to Vermont, the recreation staff was amazed by the commitment demonstrated by the members of the class, through their healthier food choices and initiative for exercise.

VOCATIONAL SERVICESSnapshot: The Work Opportunity Center (WOC) is a community vocational program, where individuals build and strengthen work skills by completing contract labor for local and regional businesses.

Number of persons served: 150

The Accounting Department continued to provide high quality fi nancial data, and has been working to prepare for upcoming changes in DDD’s funding structure.

This change in funding will have a tremendous impact on families and service providers, and The Arc is work-ing to make this transition as easy as possible for the individuals we serve and their families.

OTHER DEPARTMENTS

In addition to their usual invaluable technical and clerical support, the Administrative staff adopt-ed the role as managers of the new, agency-wide database. The new, secure, cloud-based system aims to increase effi ciency and data accuracy by increasing communication between departments and reducing redundant, paper-heavy proce-dures.

Human Resources provided support to the agency’s 240 full time employees, 9 part time employees and 120 on-call substitutes. Lead Agency Training offered 245 pre-service training sessions to em-ployees of 44 provider agencies in Mon-mouth and Ocean County, training 2,241 persons.

The Development Department oversees all fundraising and marketing activities at The Arc of Monmouth, and has been working hard to expand media relations and communication with persons served and their families.

This department also researched and oversaw the implementation of NewOrg, the new agency-wide database. This sys-tem not only provides more accurate program data, but also manages all fundraising campaigns with increased effi ciency and accuracy.
