MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Bedford College exists to make our localcommunity stronger and richer, botheconomically and socially, through its expertisein education and training. And 2013 was a verysuccessful year for the College in that regard –success that was all the more pleasing againsta backdrop of cuts in public spending.

The College showed record levels of recruitment of young people, record numbers of apprentices, record pass rates, record levels of income and afantastic number of employers choosing theCollege to deliver their training.

We were also responsible for the introduction of two major new educational initiatives inBedford – project managing the Bedford FreeSchool to a successful start, and opening The Bedford Sixth Form in the former privateBedford High School buildings.

Successes like these can only come aboutthrough a strong commitment to partnershipworking, and by maintaining the highestquality standards in all we do.

It is therefore also pleasing to gainconfirmation of our quality from externalorganisations, with reaccreditation for thequality and impartiality of our advice andguidance services, a number of marketingawards, and Ofsted judging us as‘Outstanding’ for student outcomes andsafeguarding of residential students.

I hope you find our Annual Reviewinteresting and helpful.

MESSAGE FROM THESTUDENT GOVERNORThis year the Board of Governors oversaw majorchanges in how the College improved the quality of teaching and learning and the establishment ofThe Bedford Sixth Form, and as a student governorI played a full role in taking decisions at boardmeetings – few people have led a majorcommunity asset before they leave College. The role was challenging and involved a lot of extra reading and meetings but I was pleased to have played a part and have made a differenceto the College and the local community.
