CALL FOR ARTIST THE CHRISTMAS ATTIC ANNUAL HOLIDAY ADVENT CALENDAR ART CELEBRATION 2013 Old Town Alexandria landmark, The Christmas Attic is announces its annual Call for Artists in seeking qualified artists to help produce a temporary holiday art exhibit to be revealed on the store’s exterior for the 3 rd Annual The Christmas Attic’s Holiday Advent Calendar Art Celebration. From December 1 through December 25, 2013, each day at sundown, the store will reveal “advent art” featuring a variety of holiday creations by local organizations and artists. All art will be placed on the exterior of the building facing Union Street. There will be a VIP/media kickoff event on December 1 st . During the month of December, the canvases of advent art will be available for auction in which interested parties can place bids at the store. Proceeds from the auction will go to local non-profit The Reading Connection. The Reading Connection is dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children and families by helping them create and sustain literacy-rich environments and motivation for reading. Store Background: The Christmas Attic was opened by a local family who loves the spirit and joy of the holidays. Since 1971, the charming store has long been considered a “must see” by locals and tourists alike. Specializing in hard-to-find, unique items, offerings include European hand-blown glass, locally-designed souvenirs, Italian nativity scenes, snow-covered village houses, German collectibles as well as angels, Santas and snowmen galore. The store is located in an 18th century tobacco warehouse situated one block from the Potomac River in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia.

Project Scope: The Christmas Attic is looking for 25 artist and/or community organizations (churches, schools, charities, businesses, individuals) who are interested in participating in this project. Selected organizations will need to purchase the canvas ($20) from The Christmas Attic on which to create their actual design. The canvas dimensions are 36”x30” and paintings must be vertical not horizontal. Each day at sundown, one advent art piece will be revealed and illuminated. The store will select the order in which the canvases will be displayed over the 25 days. The final advent day, Christmas Day, must be an image of a nativity scene. The entire canvas must be covered with paint or other art material (no white space). All art designs will be hung vertically, must be seen from a distance, and must be weather proofed. Design Guidelines • Designs may not be political or derogatory. • Design submissions should be true to color. • Designs must have a vertical orientation. • Designs must be seen from a distance and weather proofed. • Designs must be vertical scale not horizontal. • The Christmas Attic reserves the right to use the designs or derivations of the designs on

marketing materials and promotional materials, as it deems necessary. • All designs must be approved by The Christmas Attic staff.
