8:30 am – 12:00 pm 4 CEHsAre You Ready for Telelhealth? The basics and then some

This course on telehealth will take you through the basics, demonstrate advances and opportunities, and discuss regula-tory and payment issues related to clinical practice of the physical therapist. Telehealth can be used in physical therapist practice across multiple settings and geographic locations. The primary goal of this session is to demystify the use of telehealth and offer practical ideas for how it can be integrated into the clinical setting. This will include identifying bar-riers and develop strategies for practical application of telehealth services that are consumer directed in physical therapy. We aim to make this information both exciting and obviously applicable along the continuum of care with ethical views of how technology may enhance physical therapy care for future generations.

Presenters: Sandy Davis, PT; Matt Elrod, PT, DPT, MED, NCS and Keith Myers, PT, MBA

8:30 am – 12:00 pm 4 CEHsMedical Exercise Therapy: An Evidence Based Approach to Success

This course will demonstrate and describe an evidenced based approach for the dosage of therapeutic exercise for spinal and extremity pathologies. Specific treatment progressions will be presented for various pathologies based on Medical Exercise Therapy (MET) exercise concepts techniques for the spine and the extremities. Further, specific patient presenta-tions will be discussed.

Presenter: Thomas Eberle PT, KTCC, FAAOMPT

8:30 – 10:30 am 2 CEHsExercise Prescription for the Prenatal and Postpartum Population

It will include a brief overview of the musculoskeletal changes associated with pregnancy and childbirth, followed by a discussion of how exercise can be used to counteract those common changes. The course will outline the general guidelines for prenatal and postpartum exercise prescription and the contraindications to exercise during the prenatal and postpartum periods. Safe practices for exercise during pregnancy and modifications for the various prenatal and postpartum stages will be emphasized in the discussion of specific exercises to target the musculoskeletal structures most affected during pregnancy and childbirth.

    SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2013

8:30 am – 5:30 pm 8.5 CEHsGait and Balance Standardized Assessment in Geriatric Fallers

With a multitude of standardized tests available, it is often challenging to choose the best test battery given the pa-tient’s functional level. Clinicians are challenged to provide sufficient objective measures within the time constraints of the outpatient setting. This one day course, lecture and lab, will assist intermediate level clinicians to learn to gather meaningful objective measurements that provide an understanding of the balance disorders commonly seen in the elderly. With the use of case studies, we will demonstrate how using well rounded assessment tools can provide a multitude of effective treatment options to reduce fall risk.

Presenters: Norma Prieto-Lewis, MSPT, Dianne Saunders, MS, PT and Lenni Jo Yarchin, PT

1:30 – 3:30 pm 2 CEHsIf you think HOME HEALTH isn’t for you, you could be wrong

With the profession of physical therapy expanding and home healthcare changing quickly, PTs and PTAs are taking a second look at home care. Whether to seek more autonomy as a clinician or to practice in a more functional and com-fortable environment for our patients, we are turning to home care to meet our professional goals. Physical therapists are obtaining leadership roles as case managers, directors, and even owners of home health care companies in this typically nursing-directed field. This course will provide the participant with information and direction concerning our evolving role in home care and the opportunities to expand our personal and professional goals in this unique setting.

Presenter: Scott S. Harp, DPT, PT, PhD

1:30 – 5:30 pm 4.5 CEHsFunctioning, Functional Limitation and Medicare Requirement: Translating Concepts into Action

This course will include presentation and discussion of timely topics in relation to the recent requirement of Medicare for the reporting of functional limitation. Topics will include the definition and operationalization of functioning in the clinical setting, and assessment and evaluation of functional limitation using different measures or instruments in physical therapy. Case studies will be presented using a variety of context and health conditions. A “lab demonstra-tion” will also be facilitated for a hands-on familiarity with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and how to make sense and practical use of the ICF in the clinics. An electronic assessment tool will also be presented as a model that could satisfy Medicare functional limitation reporting requirement. The last part of the course will be devoted to question-and-answer and discussion of prevailing issues related to functioning and its relevance to Medicare and patient care.

Presenters: Reuben Escorpizo PT, Assistant Professor, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans LA and Tad Fisher, CEO, Florida Physical Therapy Association

3:45- 5:45 pm 2 CEHsUpper Extremity Integration Utilizing Manual Therapy Approaches

This two hour session will cover the biomechanical movement of the shoulder, and wrist. An integration of movement and function of the upper extremity will be presented. Manual therapy techniques will be identified for examination and intervention in order to facilitate the integration.

Presenters: Catherine Patla, PT, DHSC, OCS, FAAOMPT and Eric Shamus, PT, DPT, PhD

    SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2013

    9:00 – 11:00 am 2 CEHsMedical Errors

This course is designed to meet the requirements for licensure renewal for Florida PT’s and PTA’s. We will address root-cause analysis, error reduction and prevention and patient safety. Subtopics will include: medical documenta-tion and communication, contraindications and indications for physical therapy management; and pharmacological components of physical therapy and patient management. This course will not be a traditional lecture format, but interactive. At the completion of this presentation, participants will be able to: integrate root-cause analysis, error reduction and prevention, and patient safety; understand the purpose and requirements for medical documentation & communication; be able to apply the principles of indications and contraindications for physical therapy management; understand the integration of pharmacological components of physical therapy and patient management; be able to integrate general principles of risk management to the practice environment in patient/client safety.

Speaker: Debra Stern, PT, MSM, DBA

9:00 – 12:00 pm 3 CEHsExercise Progression Strategies for the Knee & Shoulder: An Evidence-Based Approach

Exercise interventions are a critical component of the rehabilitation process. Substantial evidence exists to guide cli-nicians in achieving the most effective patient specific outcomes. This presentation will provide attendees with the scientific and practical basis for exercise selection, dosing and progression. An emphasis will be placed on the shoulder and knee with sample exercise progressions for the most common diagnoses seen by physical therapists. Video dem-onstration will be used to illustrate exercises that the clinician can immediately integrate into clinical practice.

Presenters: Eric J. Chaconas, PT, DPT, MTC, CSCS, FAAOMPT and Morey J. Kolber, PT, PhD, OCS, CSCS, Cert MDT

    10:00 – 12:00 pm 2 CEHsResearch Platform Presentations
