interests:• ‘The Plants That Built Florida:’ The

story of Wild Florida being told at Bre-vard Zoo this spring has taken on newdimensions since Professor Worm-wood’s Pioneer Garden opened March1, featuring “The Plants That BuiltFlorida.”

This exhibit is being featured as partof the “Art of Sand, Wild Florida: Past,Present and Future” exhibit and willshowcase that even plants were part ofthe unprecedented intermingling ofold world and new. The exhibit ismade possible thanks to the supportof Rockledge Gardens.

Five hundred years ago, when thefirst Spanish ships reached the shoresof Florida, one of the great exchangesof human history began. Not only didEuropeans and Native Americansmeet for the first time, but plantspecies mixed and mingled, as well.

Some of the plants in the exhibitinclude:

• Bald cyprus: Its use, as dugoutcanoes, made this one of the mostimportant plants. Early Indian groupsfrom Timucua, Seminole and Mikosu-kee used cypress wood for fibers, houses, cooking tools, toys, drums, oxbows and coffins.

• Spanish moss: One legend tells ofthe Spanish explorer, Gorez Goz, abearded ruffian, who traded goods fora beautiful Indian maiden. The sight ofthe Spaniard frightened the girl andshe ran away. Gorez chased her, climb-ing after her to the top of a tree. Themaiden escaped, but Gorez’s beardbecame entangled in the tree branch-es. There he died, but we can still seehis “gray beard” hanging on the tree.

• Muscadine grape: One of the firstnative plants to be successfully culti-vated by the Europeans, these grapes

were being made into wine by theFrench settlers at Fort Caroline as earlyas 1594.

SPRING CLEANINGWhen the air is cool and the birds

are singing, it means it’s time to clean. Before pulling on the yellow rubber

gloves and breaking out the soap, hereare some helpful tips to make springcleaning successful.

Kelly Barber is the director of MyHome in Order and has seen her shareof messy houses.

When it comes to cleaning, she sug-gests starting small.

“You don’t want to get burned outsuper fast because you want to seeaccomplishment,” Mrs. Barber said.“It gives you that momentum to con-tinue.”

If the cleaning focus is the closets, she says to start with one rack of cloth-ing. If the kitchen is in mayhem, startwith a drawer.

“If you haven’t used it in the last six

months or a year, you’re not going touse it,” Mrs. Barber said. “You need toask yourself, ‘is this an item I love? Isthis something I’m going to use?’ Ifnot, it needs to get removed.”

During the cooler days, the bestplace to start can be the garage.

Looking at the big picture can bedaunting and overwhelm before thegarage door is fully open.

“Focus on one corner at a time andwork around the room,” Mrs. Barbersaid.

“Life can and will interrupt you,” sheadded. “If you don’t think you havetime, set a timer for 15 minutes andgrab a black bag for trash and fill itwith trash for the those 15 minutes. The next day do the same thing and

And with the spring seasonapproaching, Mrs. Perez is busier (andhappier) than ever.

“I’m a creative type, and I alwaysknew I would do something thatwould offer new opportunities andchallenges every day that would keepme excited about what I do,” she said.“Photography has never felt like a job.I wake up each day excited about thepeople I’m going to meet, the newways I can push myself and makebeautiful images that make peoplehappy.”

Through her business, Simply InLove Photography, Mrs. Perez does itall – she captures fine art, boudoir andeditorial photographs of families, indi-

grab a white trash bag and fill it withdonations.”

Once the clutter is gone and the

essentials are left, it is important to takeadvantage of the space in the home orapartment. Vertical space is often mis-used or not used at all. Mrs. Barber usesclear containers with lids because theycan be stacked and the contents can beseen easily.

“You really don’t want large contain-ers, though,” she said. “You want 15quarts or a shoe box size. They’re bigenough for certain things but not so bigyou can fill them with clutter. Forexample, for shoes, if you don’t wearthem on a regular basis, you can putthem in the clear container.”

The containers also give a limit tohow much you may need.

Me In Order has helped families de-clutter and organize their homes fromMiami to Melbourne.

On the cleaning end, Tom Heveron, owner of Beachland Cleaning Service,is an expert when it comes to cleaning.

When cleaning your own home, thefamiliarity of the home can lead tomissing very important areas.

“Most people forget about the insideof china cabinets, underneath andbehind furniture and base boards,” Mr.Heveron said. “The big one is usuallythe refrigerator. People rarely pull it outand see what is behind there.”

Once the house is cleaned and every-thing is in order, maintenance is key.

“Once you go through and clean, make sure you have systems thatwork,” said Sarah Inman, owner ofFunctional and Fabulous ProfessionalOrganizational Services.

HOME IMPROVEMENTSelling a home in today’s aggres-

sive marketplace can be challeng-ing. The good news is there are afew tweaks that can give homeown-ers a serious leg up on the competi-tion.

With the warmer months beingthe most active time of year to buyand sell real estate, it’s importantto ensure your home is seen in thebest light possible.

“Despite the influx of homes forsale this season, the process ofbuying and selling a home can besimple, efficient and enjoyable,”said Wendy Froehlich ofHomes.com, one of the nation’s toponline real estate listing andlifestyle resources.

According to Homes.com, the topfour projects that improve homeequity are:

• Bathrooms:If adding an additional bathroom

isn’t an option, upgrade existingones.

Adding a dual vanity to a masteror secondary bath improves func-tionality, allowing multiple peopleto use the space. Change out fix-tures like faucets and shower doorsto increase aesthetic appeal. Ifyou’re on a budget, replace lightfixtures or switch plates to helprefresh the space.

When working with a smallspace, highlight storage optionswith shelving and update orremove wall decor, paint or wallpa-per.

• Kitchen:Kitchen renovations can cost

anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000and more. If that’s not in your

budget, upgrading cabinetry andpaint does wonders to liven upeven the most outdated spaces.

Add crown or decorative moldingto “shape out” the kitchen cabinetsand modernize the space. Repaintcabinets, or add new hardware to

add visual interest and brightendark spaces.

• Outdoor Spaces:Curb appeal adds immediate

interest to any home’s exterior.

According to “Remodeling Maga-zine,” improving outdoor spacescan increase a home’s resalevalue dollar-for-dollar.

Frame the front walkway withitems that add visual interest, like flowers, potted plants, largerocks of various sizes and solar-powered lights. If yard space isscarce, hanging plants are anoth-

er great, low-cost option.Extend outdoor projects to the

backyard – power-wash decks orpatios and clean screened-inareas.

• Basement:Basement improvements can

optimize livable space and pro-tect the home from extremeweather, mold, moisture damageand mites. Whether transitioningthe basement to a home gym, office or family room, the basicsremain the same: insulate welland waterproof.

lege to be a part of the most impor-tant events in the lives of my couples,”she said. “I meet new people, see newplaces and constantly meet chal-lenges that feed my creativity andkeep me just as passionate today as Iwas when I started.”

She said she approaches weddingphotography knowing that the pic-tures will preserve memories for yearsto come.

“With weddings, it’s an amazingfeeling to know I’m creating imagerythat will be viewed for generations,”Mrs. Perez said. “I always shoot wed-dings keeping in mind that one daythe grandchildren and beyond will belooking at them and hearing the sto-ries of this special day.”

Mrs. Perez offered a few tips tothose looking for the perfect photog-rapher to capture the memories of awedding:

• Q: When hiring a photographerfor a wedding, what factors should betaken into consideration?

A: These days, almost anyone couldafford a semi-pro camera and a web-site. And unfortunately, overnightsomeone could become a “profes-sional” photographer. So it’s impor-tant to do your homework. Your pho-tos are all you’re going to end up with,so it should be top priority. It’s soimportant to meet the photographerin person, if you can, and chat a bit

about your wedding plans and get anidea of the personality of your pho-tographer. The way you feel is animportant element of why you hire awedding photographer, as you’ll bespending a lot of time with this per-son on your wedding day and more.

Also, prepare and ask some impor-tant questions that would help youwith your decision to choose the rightperson to document the most impor-tant day of your life. Ask questionslike: What kind of training and experi-ence do you have? What kind ofequipment do you use, and do youhave a backup camera? Do you havereferences of past brides and grooms?

Also, ask to see the contract to besure of the timeline that you’ll be get-ting your photos, how many you’ll begetting, and whether or not they willhave a release. These details shouldbe outlined in your service agree-ment.

• Q: Why should people invest in askilled photographer on their wed-ding day?

A: Well, that is easy. Other than yourmemory, your photos are all you haveleft of your wedding day. I can’t seeany more important reason than thatto choose the right person to tell yourwedding story.

Spring is here, which means it’s timeto slip those green thumbs into somegardening gloves.

And if you want to feel truly goodabout what you grow, consider upgrad-ing your garden to be more planet-friendly. Here are some ideas to consid-er:

• Grow Your Own Dinner:Grow the vegetables, herbs and flow-

ers that you would normally purchasefor your dinner and floral arrange-ments. Local is more sustainablebecause it reduces the carbon footprintassociated with transport. And youcan’t get more local than your ownbackyard!

• Encourage Pollination:Pollination is crucial for agricultural

production and the health of the

ecosystem. Unfortunately, many polli-nating insects are highly susceptible toenvironmental changes and have inrecent years, suffered major populationdecline.

You can help local pollinators thriveby planting a variety of native species ofvarying colors and shapes and reducingyour use of pesticides.

• Be Bird-Friendly:No garden is truly complete without

regular visits from birds. Encourage fly-ing visitors by installing a feeder andbird bath.

According to a study published inthe “Wilson Journal of Ornithology,” bil-lions of birds die annually worldwidefrom collisions with windows. So ifyou’re going to send out the mass inviteto these beautiful creatures, don’t forget

to make it hazard-free for their arrival.Without affecting the appearance of

your home, you can make your win-dows safer for birds by applying static-cling decals. For example, WindowAlertcreates decals that look like frostedglass to people, but brilliantly reflect UVlight for birds. To create a completevisual barrier, consider filling in thegaps between decals with UV Liquiddots, which are invisible to humans, butvisible to birds.

• Compost:By composting, you will not only

reduce your home’s overall waste, you’llalso create a rich soil that can be used inyour garden to cultivate plants natural-ly. Be careful what you compost, how-ever. Sawdust from chemically treatedwood, diseased plants, and even wal-

nuts, when composted, can create soilthat’s hazardous to both plants andpeople.
