My Brothers I hope this finds you all happy and well. We have been saddened by many lossesthis past year and they will be remembered at the closing of the Lodge of Sorrow. I want to wish youall a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year in 2014! May the Great Architect Bless you andyour families and loved ones and may he guide you in the coming year to be a good Mason all year

long. May his blessings be on all our men and women of the Armed Forces both here and abroad and I hopethat he will watch over and protect them in their duties to our beloved country. Bless this Lodge and this greatcountry we live in and protect it from all enemies, both foreign and domestic. To all the Brothers of thisLodge and all the Lodges of the state of Florida I wish you Joy and Peace. I will be looking for you in Lodgethis coming year.

Brothers here it is December already and my "Swan Song" is about to begin.First things first. I want to express my undying thanks to you Brothers for electing me as your Master of Lees-

burg Lodge No. 58. It has been a busy and sometimes trying year. A phrase that your Senior Warden and I ex-change frequently is "Don't break anything".This past Saturday the Lodge was honored to be asked to participate at the "Rededication ceremony"

for our first Master of Leesburg, W:. Melton Haynes. With permission from the Grand Lodge of Florida, theofficers wore their aprons and jewels at the ceremony. The ceremony was very impressive, and the weather outdid itself. It was a beautiful day with a beautiful and moving ceremony. I would like to thank the Sarah Isa-bella Chapter OCR for inviting the Lodge to participate.

Monday the 25th was "Step Up Night". The Grand Lodge decreed that step up night will be held on a"Called Communication" and on a "Scheduled Communication". Thank you brothers who took the time from;Bingo, Monday night football, and other events that are held on Monday nights. The Brothers who were set-ting in the Chairs of Office that they would like to be elected to on Tuesday 3 December at 7:00P.M. This wasthe time to see the work that practice does. These Brothers are worthy to be elected to the "Chairs" that theywere in. As you all know "Politicking" is forbidden in the Lodge or any where else. This would have beenyour only opportunity to see them work and have you make a educated vote. Rather than ask some one next toyou "Who do I put down"? for the vote. As you all know Tuesday 17 December will be my last full openingand closing of the Lodge. This I approach with mixed emotions as you past Masters have. I take this opportu-nity to thank all who have come to meetings and supported my efforts to "Lead" the Lodge. Again THANKYOU!! WM J MES NGELOS

    From the Secretarys Desk

Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas Brothers! Here is hoping you will have a wonder-ful, safe holiday with family and friends.

The elections are soon to be over and we will usherin a new corp of officers for 2014. It is my hope thatyou will support them throughout the year and allow

them to make Leesburg Lodge No. 58 the best in thedistrict. Dont forget to be at the Lodge for the elec-

tions and cast your vote for the good of the Lodgebecause if you dont vote you dont have the right tocomplain about how things are being run. Too manytimes in past years, that very thing has happened.

We have Brother James Michael Thomas, who will be going through the Outdoor Degree inUmatilla on the 7th of December and joining ourranks. Please come out and support him in his de-gree. It would be so wonderful to have a huge

crowd for this degree.Brothers, I still have approximately 18 names

on the naughty list for their past dues. I sincerely

hope to hear from them before the 27th of thismonth. If I have not heard a response from them, Iwill be forced by Regulation in the Masonic Digestof Florida to suspend them from the Craft. Theirnames will be read at the first Stated Communica-tion of December.

Brothers, this may be the last Trestle Boardyou will see mailed in this format. The cost of print-

ing and mailing this document is becoming very pro-hibitive. The Budget Committee has met and deter-mined that even though we are only mailing bi-monthly, it is still too high an expense. They haveproposed that we cut it down to two pages, printedone side, stapled and folded. I have checked withthe printing company and it will cost more than ifwe reduce the size to four pages in the current for-mat. This will reduce the cost to approx. $128.00plus postage (which will remain the same, $109.00).I believe that if we get more sponsors this year, we

can keep the format and size the same as we havehad. I am still checking on the cost associated withthis. The current sponsor cost is $20.00 for an indi-vidual or a couple and I am looking in to gettingother commercial sponsors also. They would becharged a one time yearly fee of $100.00 to runevery month in the e-mail version and bi monthly in

the printed form. Please let me know whatyour thoughts are on this Brothers. See youat the election. W Hank DeBerry

    From the West

    W John HaasDid You Know?

Brethren, the other day members of Leesburg Lodge at-tended a memorial dedication in Yalaha Cemetery for Civil

War Captain Melton Haynes, founder of Leesburg Lodge. As aCivil War re-enactor for twenty years, I found the ceremonyquite interesting. It also got me thinking about Masonry duringthe Civil War and the brotherhood that existed between the

North and South during that time.

Did you Knowthat the day after Vicksburg fell, Masons on both sidesgot together and held a meeting? And during this sametime a Confederate lodge assisted in the burial of theCaptain of a Union regiment.

    Did you Know

that when Sherman marched through the South andwas burning everything in sight, wives of ConfederateMasons would put a Masonic symbol on the front oftheir house to prevent it from being burned to theground?

Did you Knowthe day after the Battle of Antietam, Union soldierswere searching the battlefield looking for injured com-rades when they came upon a badly wounded Confed-erate soldier who handed them a note containing amystic symbol that was scribed in his own blood? Theofficer of the Union company recognized it to be asymbol of Masonry and immediately had the woundedsoldier taken to the field hospital and treated for hiswounds.

Did you Knowthat during the Civil War some 94 Union and 150 Con-federate military lodges existed?

    Did you Know

When Richmond, Virginia fell to Union soldiers inApril 1865, mobs burned warehouses, blew up ships, and generally set fire to property along the James

River? But the building known as Masons Hall wasprotected by a Federal provost marshal who was amember of Putnam Lodge in Massachusetts. He

placed guarded around the building plus the homes ofseveral members of the Lodge. Shortly thereafter Fed-erals and Confederate members of the Craft met inharmony in the same building.

Brethren, this is just a few of many stories about Masonicfriendship during the Civil War. If you are interested, there is alot more available on the Internet. W John Haas

On October 18 - 20, 2013 Troop 1 went to Camp Challenge, in the town of Sorrento, that is operated bythe Easter Seals. The boys had a great time and a lot of fun. There were various activities where Troop 1 par-ticipated. They were able to receive their Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge. They competed in about 6 -10activities that helped in understanding Disabilities. We received fourribbons. The first one was for Combus-tibility in which they had to start a fire using one free hand and the others with a pickup devise in which

they won 1st place! The second one they did was Orienteering using a compass where they won 2rdplace. The third ribbon they received was for participation in the activities and the camp out. The final ribbonwas the most important, where they received 3rd place in the overall competition. There were about 12 - 13Troops that attended the Camporee so they did real good to receive 3nd place in the overall competition. Theweather was great. We are very proud of Troop 1, from Scoutmaster Jaime Velez, Assistant Scoutmaster Nel-son Nunez and Assistant Scoutmaster Lamar Eury who will be retiring as the Scoutmaster on November 18,

2013. (Editors note: Article was too late to get into October Trestle Board)

    THE HOLY SAINTS JOHN

I was recently informed by a

fifty year + Mason that he did-

    nt realize there were two

    Saints John. Hopefully this

will clear some things up for

him and others who may be confused.

    -Editor-

Masonic lodges are dedicated to St. John the Baptist andSt. John the Evangelist.

St. John the Baptist, whose day is June 14th, has been thepatron of Freemasonry since the earliest writings of thecraft. He was also the patron of many other organizationsthat had early effects on the formation of Masonic thought.

St. John the Evangelist, whose day is Dec 27th, was se-lected as a patron saint of the craft at a later period, notearlier than the 16thcentury; slightly before the organiza-tion of modern Masonry, as we know it.

In the medieval period of operative masonry, St. Thomaswas the patron saint of architects and builders, and therebyof operative masons. He was available to our modern fra-ternity, but the Saints John was selected.

The personal attributes and teachings of the St.s John ex-

emplify Masonic teaching and practice. St. John the Baptistis well known for his personal integrity which inducedhim, under the most adverse circumstances, to adhere tothe obligations he felt he owed to God and to his fellow-man. While continually reproving vice, even to the king, healso preached of repentance and the need for a virtuouslife. (Read - Luke 3:2-14) His adherence to his convictionscost him his life.

St. John the Evangelist continually admonished his follow-ers and readers to the cultivation of brotherly love. Theentire thread of his Gospel and Epistles is that of the needfor brotherly love. He over all other Saints and Discipleswas allowed to witness many mystical visions. Possibly hewas permitted this additional light because his spirit was ina condition to understand and utilize the light for the bet-terment of his fellow men. This he endeavored to do. TheFirst Epistle of John is Masonic teaching in its purest form.

While the need for brotherly love has existed since beforethe time of Cain and Abel, nowhere in the Bible is the for-mula given so clearly for this requirement than in theteachings of Jesus as detailed by St. John the Evangelist.

With the foregoing in mind, it is very easy to understandwhy those two Saints were chosen to exemplify Masonicteaching and practice. It is also interesting to consider thatno two individuals were more dissimilar in their personal

characteristics and appearance, which in itself can conveya valuable lesson.
