THE EASTERN NEBRASKA/WESTERN IOWA CAR COUNCIL
In 1971 Mel Alexander and the Centennial Model T Club of Omaha invited tworepresentatives of each Omaha-area car club to a meeting to discuss issues of mutualinterest. In 1972 the meetings expanded to include car clubs from Lincoln and Fremont. From that beginning, the Eastern Nebraska/Western Iowa Car Council (ENWICC) wasformed. It now includes over 60 clubs from as far away as Kearney and West Point,Nebraska, Des Moines, Iowa, and Rock Port, Missouri. Club affiliations range from carsand trucks of the early 1900’s to the newest vehicles on the market including stock, modified, customs, street rods, trucks, classics and lead sleds.
Over the years the Council has addressed legislative matters such as year-of-manufacture license plates, antique auto taxation issues, laws concerning abandonedcars, and historic vehicle license plates. It actively networks with other councilsthroughout the country to keep up-to-date with hobby issues and concerns.
The Council sponsors two activities each year. The first is the ROCKY MANGINELLIMEMORIAL SWAP MEET held the first Sunday of March at the Lancaster Event Centerin Lincoln. 2013 marks the 40th Anniversary of the swap meet. At this swap meet, vendors from across the country sell auto-related parts and memorabilia. Admission tothe swap meet is food or a monetary donation to the Lincoln Area Food Bank. This isone of the largest one-day food drives in Lincoln.
Each year the Omaha World Herald Group prints about 9,000 “Area Auto Calendar ofEvents and Resource Directories,” which the Council distributes free at the spring swapmeet. The Directory includes the area clubs, local and national events, and localadvertisers that members of the automobile community are interested in. The Counciland the area automobile enthusiasts appreciate the "book".
Each spring the Council awards five scholarships in the amount of $300.00 each tostudents studying in automotive-related fields. This amount is doubled to $600.00 if thestudent attends the McPherson College Automotive Automobile Restoration program.
Each year at Christmas-time, the Council gives deserving charities $250.00 each. In2012 the recipients were the Tangier Shrine Transportation Fund in Omaha, CampQuality of North West Missouri, Matt Talbot Kitchen in Lincoln, Lincoln City Mission, andthe Siena/Francis House in Omaha.
The rest of the profits are distributed to the car clubs that worked supporting the SwapMeet. Many of these Clubs give to charities of their choosing.
The second event that the Car Council sponsors is the ANNUAL BILL YATESMEMORIAL FALL FOLIAGE TOUR. This is held on October 6, 2013. This year groupsfrom Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri met at Waubonsie State Park in Iowa for a picniclunch and fellowship.
With this story of the Eastern Nebraska/Western Iowa Car Council it is easy to see thatENWICC truly is “By Hobbyists, For Hobbyists.”
