IntroductionExperiencing difficulties in life? Feng Shui 風 水 may be able to provide some answers. The Chinese often say 一命 二運 三風水 四積陰得 五讀書, which means there are five levels of fortune that can be used to benefit human beings. The best type of fortune is received through good karma bestowed at birth. The second type is from luck generated during one’s life. The third type is manifested through the proper application of Feng Shui. The fourth type is developed by being of good morals, character, and virtue. The fifth type is achieved through a proper education. Combining these levels together can bring about good fortune almost each and every year, but only if applied correctly. Since good karma and luck cannot be controlled by humans alone, Feng Shui becomes an important component – but only if one takes the time to learn exactly what it is and how it works.

What is Feng Shui and How Can it Help Me?

The movement of the planets and other heavenly bodies in the solar system has a profound impact on the earth and its inhabitants: they affect the changing of the tides, growth seasons for plants, mating periods for animals, atmospheric pressure changes which result in varying weather patterns, and the like. The effect on human beings, while subtle in nature, is no different.

Feng Shui is the ancient art of Chinese geomancy that utilizes symbols, astrological signs, ancient mathematics, and directional analysis to uncover prosperity and minimize problems affecting human beings each year, month, day, and even hour based on the flow of energy through the universe. Properly aligning one’s living space and office with the cycles of nature can bring about good

5

Page 6: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

fortune and benefit individuals, families, organizations, teams, countries, and businesses alike.

6

Page 7: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

In the Chinese almanac, there are a number of cycles used to track the movement of time and space. Astrologically, there are twelve animal signs, each with five different character types, based on the elemental qualities of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. This sixty year cycle repeats in sets of three Yuan 元 to complete 180-year cycles. From a Feng Shui perspective,

each Yuan is divided into nine cycles of 20 years each, called Yun 運, which set into motion the directional fortunes for any given year, based on a complex combination of two other ancient Chinese mathematical formulas, the Ho Tu 河 圖 (illustrated above, left), which is based on the Eight Trigrams of the Yi Jing 易 經 , and the Lo Shu 洛 書 Nine Palaces (illustrated on the right) which is often referred to in the West as the Magic Square. These two maps, when properly utilized in conjunction with the movement of the zodiac, can be used to predict events, design homes, manage floor plans, influence important decisions, and help with anything else that requires some foresight and direction.

Feng Shui can take into account the position of your home and office related to beneficial and problematic compass directions and the birth dates and times of those dwelling within it. Each component is analyzed to determine the fate and energy flow within the home or office over the course of any given period. While private consultations can be arranged to ensure maximum effect and understanding, the purpose of this document is to provide some basic guidance that can be useful in planning for the New Year and beyond. Good luck!

How to Use this BookDetermine your Zodiac Sign

Select your animal from the Astrology Tables on p. 67, based on your year of birth, noting that the Chinese solar calendar extends from February 4 – February 3 each year. From a solar perspective, this means that a baby born between January 1 and February 3, 2013 is still considered to belong to the sign of the Dragon. Advanced practitioners, however, will often use the lunar year as the basis for one’s sign selection, particularly during the 2013 Year of the Snake; as compared to the static solar year noted above, the start of the lunar year changes annually and is generally calculated as the second new moon following the Winter Solstice. This year, a baby born between February 10, 2013 and January 30, 2014 falls under the sign of the Snake. This type of anomaly has important meanings to the year and the intensity of the energy present. Feng Shui is a precise art with many levels and dimensions – one must practice diligently to understand more of the advanced terminology embedded herein.

In the ancient times, before language was invented, people had difficulty keeping track of time. Since the lives of man and animals was so close at the time, the Chinese decided to name each year with an animal. The Chinese zodiac divides every birth year into twelve (12) animal signs, of which there are five types each, resulting in a total of sixty (60) astrological cycles. Each animal has general characteristics as described in the pages to follow; remember that although different years and months have various attributes, the sign can (and will) embody the entire spectrum of positive and negative traits. When reviewing a sign, be sure to understand all aspects so as to grasp the breadth of possibilities that represents each section of the zodiac.

MOUSE (SHU 鼠): this sign the first sign of the zodiac dwells in the North and is said to have bit the net between Heaven and Earth, opening the communication floodgates for Yin 陰 and Yang 陽. As such, they are smart people and fast talkers; they possess the ability to develop large business networks and generally have good dealings with people. Unfortunately, they may tend towards nervous behavior and can take on too many responsibilities, burdening their existence and creating unnecessary stress.

OX (NIU 牛 ): this sign unknowingly carried the Mouse across the Yellow River who then ran to reach Buddha first, leaving the Ox as the second sign of the Chinese zodiac. Living in the North-Northeast, the Ox is a strong, physical being who carries heavy loads for others, never tiring

or losing stamina unless he or she becomes bored or lazy. Oxen can become very stubborn at times and often have difficulty expressing themselves, especially in matters of love, relationships, and marriage, but they are good friends to have indeed.

TIGER (HU 虎): the third sign of the zodiac resides in the East-Northeast and is both a powerful nurturer and natural leader, being so quick and agile in movement. Sometimes they cannot see the difference between right and wrong, due to their one-sided pursuits. The Tiger must work hard to remain faithful in relationships and has to learn to control his or her feelings so as to avoid hurting others. The ancient Chinese believed that Tigers were so adept at teaching life skills to others that they take care of all children – not just their own.

RABBIT (TU 兔): the fourth animal sign resides in the East and represents youthful exuberance, as these people always seem to be hopping around from one place to the next, developing extended social networks of friends that sometimes rival those of their own families. Underneath this

external appearance, however, is a complicated, nervous, and secretive creature that can get into trouble spreading gossip or rumors. These individuals have natural talent – they just need to develop a strong mind to harness their full potential.

DRAGON (LONG 龍): according to the Tian Shi, the fifth sign of the zodiac, and only of mythological origin, possesses four key attributes: power, luck, beauty, and health. Because of this, Dragons, which live in the East-Southeast, must be careful not to let this all go to their heads or have it lead to unrealistic expectations of the world or those around them. Thinking long-term is best for the Dragon – and do not be afraid to utilize your many talents in life!

SNAKE (SHE 蛇 ): the sixth sign, residing in the South-Southeast, is often called the Baby Dragon and possesses a “sixth sense” when dealing with people, money, fortune, and wealth. These individuals are very attractive, which often poses problems when trying to manage matters of love

and romance. They have the tendency to make others do their dirty work for them, and only associate with intelligent or high ranking individuals.

HORSE (MA 馬): the seventh sign, which leads the second half of the Chinese zodiac, lies in the South and always looks good in life, prancing around the world to show others just how relaxed and successful they appear to be – and they usually are. But sometimes they can get overly emotional and controlling – because of this, every Horse needs a rider, someone who can help direct their talents so that goals and objectives can be reached. Without a team approach, the Horse can become impatient, repeating mistakes over and over again.

RAM/SHEEP (YANG 羊): the eighth sign is symbolic of the mountaineer, a solitary creature that is not afraid to butt horns with others to advance in life. Rams dwell in the South-Southwest and possess incredible artistic talent, good looks, and an innate sense of charm. They can sometimes overly

blame others for their problems, and seem to have a love-hate relationship as it concerns affairs of the heart. Be careful of those horns, Ram, and stop worrying about how green the grass on the other side may look from your vantage point.

MONKEY (HOU 猴): the ninth sign of the zodiac is a playful, mischievous creature that loves to laugh and have a good time in life. They have sharp minds, strong support systems, excel in school, and love to run around outside. Being such a social creature and the smartest of the signs, they can often develop superiority complexes and large egos. This sign, which resides in the West-Southwest, must learn to control their temper, watch their health, and avoid exploding at others.

ROOSTER/PHOENIX (JI 雞 ): the tenth sign of the zodiac resides in the West and is a natural performer always outspoken in life, begging others to give them the attention they feel is so deserved – and rightly so. Roosters were born up for the task and always finish the job at hand, even if they have

to fight their way through it. At the same time, they are sincere, compassionate, and generous creatures. Because they are often unable to keep their mouths shut, the Rooster creates many obstacles for themselves, particularly with others as it relates to business, love, and family squabbles.

DOG (GOU 狗 ): the eleventh sign resides in the West-Northwest and is dedicated to fighting for what is right and correct in life. These people make for good, reliable, hard-working, and loyal friends or community leaders; they also possess special senses that allow them to sniff out potential

problems or threats to the natural laws of nature. This sign often has a difficult childhood, as their skills develop later in life, and can be challenged in relationships. They have a strong spiritual side that ultimately directs them towards their true path.

BOAR (ZHU 豬): the twelfth and last sign resides in the North-Northwest and represents the ‘baby’ of the Chinese zodiac who inherits the good and bad fortune of all the signs before him or her. As such, these people live a long, enjoyable, even-keeled life, oftentimes supported by others. They always enjoy poking fun at those who do not have it so easy. The Boar is a good friend to have, even though you will argue with them from time to time. This sign must watch its health, however, and avoid living life to excess.

Determine Your Nine Palace StarSelect your Nine Palace Star from the Astrology Tables on p. 67, based on your gender and year of birth, noting that the Chinese solar calendar extends from February 4 – February 3 each year. As described in step one, you may also use the lunar year as the basis for your star selection - this is the preferred method during the Year of the Snake 2013, which begins after the start of the solar year on February 10, 2013.

The Nine Star system divides every birth year into different palaces, resulting in mixed possibilities each year in sets of nine that are governed by a greater cycle of twenty years (Yun 運), and an even-larger 180-year cycle (Yuan 元). A number from one (1) to nine (9) is assigned to each birth year, and varies according to gender. Each Nine Palace Star has a primary position and corresponding direction, as illustrated in the following chart:

General characteristics of the Nine Palace stars are as follows:

One (1) White: this palace corresponds to the Northern direction and the element of Water. These people have a particular combination of

prenatal and postnatal intelligence that lends well to career success and advancement, particularly since these individuals are also very ambitious. This position corresponds to the entirety of Winter and culminates with the sunlight that breaks out at the start of each Spring. As such, these individuals have difficulty early in life, but from middle age forward, they become very lucky and successful and it is easy for them to reach their goals and desires. However, because this sign easily encounters difficulty and danger, such people must develop a strong conscious to overcome life’s obstacles.

Two (2) Black: this palace corresponds to the Southwest direction and the element of Earth. These people often become kings or high-ranking

officials; however, this does not mean the alignment is all good. Instead, one should think of this palace as representing premium soil: if you plant good seeds in it, great results will occur, while if you plant bad ones, it will result in the worst of the worst. These individuals are thus very powerful (physically speaking) but must be careful of what they foster in life for they can bring about growth or destruction in equal measures.

Three (3) Jade: this palace corresponds to the East direction and the element of Wood. Individuals born under this palace possess high

levels of integrity and kindness; as such, others often trust them. This position can be likened to the sun rising in the East, which means that their Yang energy is very strong; thus, be careful that one’s rising energy does not lead to gossiping, which will cause relationship problems and difficulties at school or in the workplace. For men, be especially careful of explosive outbursts. If these

二黑土

三碧木

Page 35: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

people work on developing their kindness as much as possible, they can minimize such issues.

Four (4) Green: this palace corresponds to the Southeast direction and to the element of Wood. These individuals are kind, internally strong, and

possess a good combination of practicality and intelligence. Because the Eastern Wood star comes to life in this palace, these individuals correspond to the springtime and are good communicators. They have societal reputations because the Yang energy gradually progresses as the sun rises higher into the sky. Due to their kindness, loyalty, and faithfulness, such people will unavoidably be taken advantage of and lose fortune through such means. They are hard working when young and reap their best luck only after middle age.

Five (5) Yellow: being in the center and corresponding to the element of Earth, this sign corresponds to the land as opposed to individuals.

As such, men (who are Yang) are assigned the Two (2) Black star, which corresponds to Yin Earth, while women (who are Yin) are assigned the Eight (8) White star, which corresponds to Yang Earth. One can consider these Two (2) and Eight (8) star individuals to be even more physically rooted than traditional Two (2) and Eight (8) star alignments, having originally come from the center position.

Six (6) White: this palace corresponds to the Northeast direction and the element of Metal. Because this star sits in the position of the trigram

that corresponds to Heaven, these individuals are so peaceful and safe that even animals would come to their door looking for friendship. They have a smooth life and are looked up to by others with reverence and respect. These individuals have lots of luck, but can often lose face when their patience with others dissipates. They can also become lazy and sometimes lack endurance.

四綠木

六白金

五黃土

Page 36: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

Therefore, this palace will experience failures unless they stay aggressive and active in trying to harness their seemingly limitless potential.

Seven (7) Red: this palace corresponds to the Western direction and the element of Metal. These individuals are skilled in communications

and are liked by everyone. They know how to dress well and often have a noble appearance. This alignment has a lot of youthful exuberance connected to it, which can bring about joy and happiness. However, they must be careful of talking too much and gossiping, because they will surely make mistakes along the way and thus can easily attract disputes, fueling arguments with others.

Eight (8) White: this palace corresponds to the Northeastern direction and the element of Earth. These people are symbolized by the slow rising of

the sun in that one must wait out the darkness of night to see the dawn. In the same way, these individuals should start out small and slowly grow in potential, keeping fast to one’s beliefs. Like putting coins into a bank account, or watching a small hill become a mountain, these people must slowly cultivate their fortune, which blossoms nicely at the end. Otherwise, there will be problems, especially with others, so be sure to set expectations for the future and work towards achieving them in a diligent manner.

Nine (9) Purple: this palace corresponds to the Southern direction and the element of Fire. The Nine Purple is considered the most Yang palace;

thus, it not only goes straight up, but also makes and generates Yin energy as it turns to its opposite. From a social perspective, this means these people can be hot or cold; in fact, their actions are not always very practical and they often say things that have unintended consequences. These fiery people can get angry often and easily go to extremes when they are pulled back and forth from one ideal to another. If individuals born under this palace are not

九紫火

careful, they will fall into other’s traps, particularly in their early years, when they are young, weak, and impractical. Those born in this palace must change and become more humble, with mutual respect for others, in order to gather their good fortune, for which an unlimited supply exists.

Determine Your Home TrigramOnce you have determined your Nine Palace Star, you will need to determine the direction the front door of your primary home faces so as to identify your Yi Jing 易經 trigram, which sits in one of the eight main compass directions. Each trigram has a symbol associated with it; such an image is called a Gua 卦 in Chinese. It is said that all things in

the universe are derived from various combinations of the eight Gua, illustrating the idea that positive energy can be gathered by looking deep within each of the eight main compass directions. Every building has a direct correspondence to one of the eight trigrams, and it can tell you a lot about what is ‘inside’ yourself and how you are perceived by others. Use a compass to precisely determine the direction your front door or main door of your home faces. General characteristics of the Eight Trigrams are as follows:

A front door facing Northwest embodies the vital spirit of the trigram Qian 乾, which represents Heaven and is symbolic of the pure Yang energy that is as clear as the sky above and breath within, correlating to strength and power. Qian is a location where one can benefit from spiritual endeavors and doing good deeds for others, as

it contains the essential truth of our existence. It is said to represent friends and the community, and corresponds to the head and lungs, the element of metal, and the father of the family.

Page 38: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

A front door facing Southwest embodies the substance of the trigram Kun 坤 , which represents Earth and corresponds to pure Yin; it is thus obedient in its actions of following, providing a natural response to heavenly energy that comes from above. This is a direction, like the center, where one can accomplish

physical tasks. Kun is like the great force that exists within the shadows; it is the hidden and dark quality of life that opposes the bright light of Yang energy. This direction, being extensive and powerful, can sometimes lead to injury and disease. It represents marriage and relationships, corresponding to the abdomen and womb, the element of earth, and the mother of the family.

A front door facing West embodies the power of the trigram Dui 兌 , which represents the Lake and is a direct passageway to joy, happiness, and delight via the process of change and transformation. Dui is a gate into the deeper sections of the body, corresponding to change and renewal, which leads to

gratification. One can use this direction to lift up, raise, and lighten the soul, reaching high and lofty places. Representing children and one’s descendents, this trigram corresponds to the mouth and chest, the element of metal, and the youngest daughter of the family.

A front door facing Northeast embodies the power of the trigram Gen 艮, which represents the Mountain and is symbolic of a person turning inward, such as when one meditates to quiet the mind. This area is like a set gathering time, where one has the ability to carry inner peace and quietude in the hand; storing energy to the

pace of a drum, one can present something auspicious, like birds flying in a flock. This direction therefore represents knowledge and intellect, corresponding to the hands and arms, the element of earth, and the youngest son in the family.

Page 39: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

A front door facing South embodies the power of the trigram Li 離, which represents Fire and is symbolic of the defining character of all living things - their perception and ability to understand nature. Li is like the extreme blossoming of life that began as a tiny seed first sprouting in the depths of winter; now is when

the most glorious of essences spring forth. This direction is where you can accomplish things in life, representing fame and rank; it corresponds to the eyes and heart, the element of fire, and the middle daughter of the family.

A front door facing North embodies the power of the trigram Kan 坎 , which represents Water and is symbolic of darkness as in a crisis or danger, such as a traveler attempting to cross an abyss. This direction represents the birth of energy, like a fresh life at its

early beginnings. Kan is like a seed spouting up from the earth, fostering life by its nature of containing Heavenly energy. This is a place to foster creativity and ideas, and thus represents career endeavors; it corresponds to the ears and Kidneys, the element of water, and middle son of the family.

A front door facing East is considered great good fortune in Feng Shui as it embodies the power of the trigram Zhen 震 , which represents Thunder and is symbolic of a decisive moment in nature that can be observed and noted as the start of a cycle. Zhen is like

a pool of energy, completely whole in its ability to quickly influence rule and principle in a responsive manner. This is a place where one can build something from nothing, a location where seeds are nourished and sprouted; it therefore represents the family and one’s ancestors, corresponding to the legs and feet, the element of wood, and the oldest son in the family.

Page 40: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

A front door facing Southeast embodies the power of the trigram Xun 巽 , which represents Wind and is symbolic of a peaceful nation, carried out through the gentle, penetrating nature of persuasion. Xun embodies the power of the cyan Dragon, reflecting clearly as it soars through the clouds in meditative

fashion, influencing life from afar. This is a location where one can accumulate things; it therefore represents money and wealth and corresponds to the hips, thighs, and buttocks, the element of wood, and the oldest daughter of the family.

Compare SignsOnce you know your individual zodiac sign, star palace, and home trigram, you can begin to learn how your alignment integrates with the current year. Read the 2013 Annual Forecast starting on p. 31, which explains how the year affects all individuals, and learn how your astrological sign compares to the current year’s alignment using the Compatibility Charts on p. 69.

If the current year is an animal whom you have a favorable partnership with, good fortune will be available during the year for you to reap. For example, the Rooster, Ox, and Monkey have good luck in 2013, due to the fact that they pair harmoniously with the Snake. However, if the animal of the year opposes you, or opposes one of your animal’s good friends, difficulties and obstacles will appear during the year that you will have to navigate through. By knowing this beforehand, you can plan for misfortune and hopefully avoid it entirely. For example, those born under the sign of the Pig/Boar will have difficulty in 2013 because it sits in opposition to the Snake. If you do not have a direct relationship with the year’s sign, your fortune will usually be derived in one of two ways – either how your sign’s “friends” relate to the year’s animal or the direction in which your own animal resides. There is also the presence of stars in the sky that influence each of these two main positions through the twelve months of the year; for this,

Page 41: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

you will need to contact the author for a personal Feng Shui consultation, as it falls beyond the scope of this text.

From a Feng Shui perspective, you can use symbols and the directional correspondences of the animals to assist you during the year. For example, it is essential that Snakes and Oxen carry a Rooster or Phoenix charm/amulet with them in 2013 for both protection and good fortune. Oxen, Roosters, and Monkeys can also take advantage of the Southeast direction in 2013, particularly to assist with educational or romantic endeavors. Conversely, the Pig/Boar must particularly avoid facing the South-Southeast direction in 2013, which is the Snake’s exact location, or s/he will experience legal troubles and other obstacles.

When choosing how to utilize symbols and directions, always remember to use personal creativity and insight in a logical and thoughtful manner. While there are really no right or wrong ways to apply Feng Shui, you can learn over time how to maximize good fortune and minimize challenges each year.

Review Your Nine Star PalaceHaving first compared your individual zodiac sign to the annual sign, one must now do the same with your Nine Star Palace alignment. Read the current year’s Feng Shui Forecast starting on p. 51 and determine what is happening in two places: the original direction of your Nine Star Palace and the location of your Nine Star Palace in the current year. Although your Palace never changes (as it is set at birth), your fortune changes as our planet moves through phases of good, bad, and magical positions each year, and through the greater cycles of twenty (20) and 180 years. This results in new stars traveling into the native direction of your palace and home, bringing about a mix of positive and negative results as well. The amount of fortune gathered each year depends on how you travel through these oceans of changes by

Page 42: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

integrating two key concepts in Feng Shui: where you are coming from and where you are going. First, find out what is happening in your home’s native Trigram direction (e.g., the position your front door faces); second, discover what is happening in the direction your Nine Palace star occupies for the year (see p. 51). In 2013, this is simplified because all the palaces reside in their original locations. In other years, these directions will vary and must be taken into consideration.

Overall, in any given year, four directions are good and four directions are problematic, influencing each palace in one way or another. This relates to the Nine Palace compatibilities illustrated on pp. 70-71, along with the numerical partnerships of the particular 20-year Yun, which for the period 2004-2024 is the Eight (8) White star alignment. From a Feng Shui perspective, it is important to try to channel the energy of one’s good directions to achieve success and mitigate damages from the challenging directions to avoid misfortune.

Taking this concept a step further, a male Rooster born in 1981 would want to place a fish tank in the Northern direction of his house or office in 2013 to assist with gathering the good fortune that is present in the direction. On the other hand, a Dog born in 1970 (male or female, both assigned to the Three (3) Jade Palace) must avoid traveling to Eastern locations in 2013 as there is trouble here with respect to lawsuits, accidents, and the like.

Review Your Home’s DirectionHaving compared your zodiac sign and nine star palace to the current year’s alignment, the last individual component to review is the direction of your home’s Trigram. Read the current year’s Feng Shui Forecast on p. 51 and see what is forecasted for the direction of your home’s Trigram.

Page 43: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

As with your Nine Star Palace, there are four good and four problematic directions each year influencing each of the Trigrams in one way or another. Since you cannot physically move your front door each year, you must maximize the use of your front door in good years, and consider using alternate ways to get into and out of your home in problematic years.

For example, while it is generally considered good fortune to have your front door facing East, this is a problem in 2013, as the Eastern direction contains energies that can seriously disrupt the harmony of those living in the home. One can mitigate this in 2013 by hanging a Ba Gua mirror over the front door, or using other types of protection charms on or around the front door. Another option would be to use an alternate entrance, such as the back door or garage, to avoid the flow of negative energy in and out of the house from the East.

Integrate AspectsTo complete your understanding of how each year will truly affect you, it is essential to combine the fortune of your astrological sign of birth (e.g. Mouse, Ox, Tiger, etc.) with the location of your Nine Palace star and the direction of the front door of your home. This tedious task, which serves as the year’s plan and is often left to Feng Shui experts, should result in an overall assignment of living space to individuals within the home or office, the positioning of furniture, and the arrangement of household items for the year. It can also set into motion all plans, whether familial, personal, or professional in nature.

To combine harmonious palaces with good animal sign pairings creates multiple good fortunes for all involved, such as in a family or business. Understanding how these cycles all fit together, including their relationship with the Chinese zodiac and their positioning in time and space, is the basis for most of the readings in this text. The arrangement of this information can be extremely

Page 44: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

complicated: sometimes, multiple pockets of good fortune are created; other times, conflicting fortunes or extremely dangerous situations will appear.

When combining information to devise an annual plan, remember that learning Feng Shui takes time; it is a classical art that, when used correctly, can help you navigate through the trials and tribulations of life. At a minimum, it’s a lot of fun, so be sure to have some when considering what to do this year!

2013 Annual ForecastYear of the Snake

Gong Yi Fa Cai 恭喜發財! In 2013, the Chinese New Year falls on February 10th in China, which occurs after the official solar start of the year on February 4th, known as Li Chun 立春 or Spring Begins. It is a year of renewal and new beginnings – be sure to leave the front door of your home open this evening, especially if it is facing in a beneficial direction, so that you can gather good fortune throughout the night into your dwelling. It is an important year to use Feng Shui, because many new ideas and things will happen, some very quickly, and one must stay on top of their game in a dedicated fashion to take advantage of all this opportunity.

The Chinese call the year Gui Si 癸巳 , which is the 30th cycle in the sixty year calendar and the 4,711th year in Chinese history. Gui Si 癸巳 means celestial Yin Water hovering over the terrestrial Yin Fire of the Snake, an aspect called the Snake of the Green Grass. This

alignment illustrates Hexagram 63 of the Yi Jing 易經 , or Book of Changes, called Ji Ji 旣 濟 , which loosely translates as “After the End.” In this hexagram, the trigram of Water resides above the trigram for Fire, symbolizing fulfillment and the image of ‘crossing the great river.’ The story revolves around General Zhen, who was hired by the state of Shang from its westerly neighbor state Zhou. The Shang Emperor, Wu Ding, needed to control an uprising of local barbarian states. This hexagram illustrates the completion of General Zhen’s tedious journey, much like having completed the Year of the Dragon 2012, where the highest levels of skill were required to survive and thrive. However, with the completion of one cycle comes the beginning of another (hence the title – After the

Page 46: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

End), which symbolizes the Year of the Snake 2013: one must be prepared for the adversity that will no doubt return again as a new world culture is created with changes to one’s allies and enemies. Isn’t it interesting how this aligns with the Mayan long calendar prediction of an ‘end’ to the world?

In Taoist alchemy, the interplay of Water (Kan 坎) and Fire (Li 離) is essential to internal spiritual development – a key goal for individuals in the Year of the Snake 2013. One should note that the special Na Yin 納 音 element of the year is Water that is Running, which travels sonically through the cosmos. This water can be a powerful elixir that can be used for spiritual development in 2013. At the same time, it can bring disaster through the swift introduction of flooding, rains, tsunamis, hurricanes, typhoons, and more.

According to the Tian Fu 天 符 or Heavenly Register, the Snake itself is symbolized in the calendar by Si 辰, a character which represents the image of a fetus in the womb. This concept clearly depicts the new beginnings that will define the Year of the Snake 2013; it is also a time for ripening, as if the womb was heavenly soil expressing itself through its ability to endure the major changes taking place on earth. Since the Snake corresponds to the South-Southeastern direction and the 9-11am time period, be sure to keep your front door and windows open during this time (particularly those that face the Southeast) to gather good fortune on the Chinese New Year.

Tai Sui Xu Dan

Each year, a Tai Sui 太歲, acting like a policeman in the heavens, governs the annual cycle, ruling the year and influencing the whole

Page 47: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

of the zodiac, the eight cardinal directions, and their 24 directional subdivisions of 15° each on the compass. These sixty generals are said to represent the earliest ancestor of those born during the year and are symbolized by stars surrounding the planet Jupiter.

In 2013, the ruler is Tai Sui Xu Dan 太歲徐單 (pictured on p. 4), who is positioned in the South Southeast, which sits between the 142.6 to 157.5° range of the compass. The main energy of the year is coming into the world from this direction, and it is pointed at the North Northwest. There is indirect exposure to the Tai Sui in the West-Southwest and East as well.

Xu Dan was born during the Han Dynasty and practiced martial arts from early childhood. Over the course of his life, he became a majestic figure with generous tolerance who received many military medals. He was summoned by the great General Ban Chao 班超 for assistance due to his youth, strength, supreme martial arts skills, trusting nature, and brave, courageous spirit.

Ban Chao was a general and cavalry commander in charge of the administration of the Western Regions in Central Asia during the Eastern Han dynasty. Xu Dan helped him bring the people of the Western Regions under Chinese rule during the second half of the 1st century CE, which opened trade routes to the West. Together, Ban Chao and Xu Dan created an army of inmates and volunteer soldiers and trained them so well that they captured more than 1,000 people and secured Chinese control over the Tarim Basin region after fighting for 31 years. While generally outnumbered, Xu Dan skillfully played on the divisions among his opponents.

A famous quote of Ban Chao is as follows: "If you don't enter the Tiger's den, how can you catch the Tiger’s cub?" (不入虎穴,不得虎子) This is interesting from an astrological standpoint, as Snakes and Tigers do not get along.

Page 48: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

General CharacteristicsThe Snake is a natural born leader of other animals, often referred to as the beautiful “baby dragon.” Whereas the Dragon exhibits external power, the Snake is a symbol of internal power. Dragons fly above ground, in the clouds, while snakes burrow below – as a result, Dragons are considered Yang, while Snakes are considered Yin. The Snake is a very spiritual sign – this animal hibernates each winter like a human being would meditate and fast. What a unique creature the Snake is, being cold blooded with no legs. The Tian Shi would say: “the centipede has one hundred legs, but it can’t move as fast as the Snake.” The Snake’s cold blood keeps its head cool, which allows for it to maintain a flexible and adaptable mentality. Morale of the story: Snakes are fast, can keep their heads cool, and always use mental strength over force. JFK, Ghandi, and even Jesus Christ was said to be born in this year. As a result, the Year of the Snake 2013 is a serious year for the roots of new leadership to be born – it symbolizes the start of a new beginning.

Snakes and RelationshipsThe Snake is often associated with beauty – they are so attractive, everyone falls in love at first sight. Individuals born under this sign constantly accentuate this strength by dressing up and looking good at all times; this also occurs because they are always in competition with the Dragon, like the younger of two brothers or sisters. Snakes are never without a potential suitor; however, this can come back to haunt them, because when the Snake is in a relationship, there is always a third person, lurking in the distance. If you are interested in a Snake, beware – they are not for the faint of heart. Do not take Snakes lightly; they are powerful creatures. If you are mentally weak, they will take advantage of you. On the other hand, if you are mentally tough and adaptable, they will love you!

Page 49: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

As all things in life represent a balance of Yin and Yang, Snakes must be careful to avoid lonesome periods in their lives, which occur when they unknowingly turn friends into enemies, oftentimes unbeknownst to them. Maybe they act too smart, or drive others crazy because of their beauty, or perhaps people get a glimpse of their sneaky nature and run the other way. When this happens to the Snake, being such internal creatures, it drastically affects their health. As a way to balance this from happening, the Snake uses its cunning nature to cover their tracks (and faults) at all times. To the Snake, revenge is a dish best served cold, and as a result they can wait for it, just when the time is right. Once again – do not take the Snake, or 2013 for that matter, lightly.

Snakes and CareersSnakes can innately get others to work for them, especially when the product or result is in their own image; this makes them very effective managers of people – if they are working towards their goals and objectives. If the Snake is not working towards his or her own goals, they can become unfaithful to supervisors and go off on tangents. In this situation, they become very difficult to manage, and their direct reports oftentimes end up confused. It is very important that when Snakes choose a career path, it is something that they believe in. Otherwise, trouble will result.

There are three careers especially worthwhile for Snakes: business administration, entertainment, and politics. They are also excellent in academia, due to their brilliant minds, which is an industry that will reinvent itself in 2013. Snakes are very competitive in both school and the workplace; they also know how to market themselves very well, being very persuasive creatures. Since the Snake is mentally strong, it is capable of great achievement - especially as part of a team. Singing can be a big career for Snakes as well – Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel (both Snakes) are a good example of many of the traits discussed herein.

Page 50: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

Snakes and WealthBecause the Snake is enamored by all, mentally tough, and cold blooded, they are capable of making lots of money. This is countered, naturally, by the fact that this sign wastefully spends – the more they make, the more they lose. Therefore, a key part of a Snake’s success is to learn to prevent and minimize loss. That being said, they will probably make it all back again anyway, given that they are so persistent. Snakes do not give up easily; they are powerful, capable creatures that can achieve things on their own.

General GuidanceThe Year of the Snake 2013 begins where the Dragon left off in 2012 – what happens after a year when fundamental changes take place to the core of things in life. In 2013, it will feel as if someone pushed the ‘reset’ button on your life, putting old things behind you and new things in front of you. Led by Tai Sui Xu Dan 太歲徐單, a symbol of powerful, strategic conquests to align people under a collective vision. The 2013 Snake is symbolized by Yin Water over Yin Fire, which creates the Na Yin Element of Water That is Running. That means there will be a continuation of flooding and weather changes from 2012, so be sure to plan accordingly, especially water coming in from the South-Southeast, where the Snake resides.

For those who have been following our annual Taoist Forecast, we predicted that the world began a major shift in energy beginning in the Year of the Dragon 2000, which clearly changed relationships between the East and the West, cumulating in the attacks of 9/11 in the Year of the Snake 2001. This illustrates how different things can become after Dragon years. The Year of the War Horse 2002 brought multiple wars on multiple fronts, some of which are still going on to this day. In the Year of the Monkey 2004, life on earth entered the 8th Yun, which extends through 2024 and defines much of what is to take place both now and into the near future. Energetic change built up from 2004 through 2011, cumulating in major climactic change in the Year of the Dragon 2012. This helps explain the Long Count Calendar of the Ancient Mayan civilization, which ended on December 21, 2012.

The Year of the Dragon 2012 was filled with extreme weather events – particularly flooding, which occurred all over the world, including devastating Superstorm Sandy in the New York metropolitan area. There were typhoons in the Philippines, flooding in China and Australia, and solar storms evidenced throughout the year. There were also major signals that governments were

Page 52: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

beginning to understand the importance of weather control, as evidenced by the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), which is an ionospheric research program located in Alaska, and other similar facilities located in China. It is important to remember that the 2013 Snake also corresponds to water, and flooding will continue to occur throughout the year. However, there are other key elements involved this year, most notably internal fighting and dissent from within. This year will contain many struggles as new ideas emerge while old ideas go by the wayside.

While the interplay of the current year is Water over Fire, the Snake’s main correspondence is Fire; as a result, 2013 will result in a peak of the sun’s solar activity, causing geomagnetic storms, and space storms that will short out computer systems, power grids, mobile phones, satellites, GPS, banking, etc. It is important to plan for this in advance so that you will not be too impacted. Unfortunately, this fiery energy could also result in some form of nuclear explosion(s) – either planned or unplanned, so be very careful.

Because General Xu Dan sits in the South-Southeast position, the opposite direction, North-Northwest, lies in the region called the “Broken Year” or Sui Po 嵗破 , which brings misfortune, authority-related problems, ill health, and a loss of wealth for those born in the year of the Pig/Boar. As in every year, be sure to always sit with the Tai Sui behind you – and never directly facing him – or misfortune will inevitably result. It would be like speeding in your car on a highway knowing that a policeman was going to be giving tickets up ahead – a sure recipe for disaster. Good fortune will come in 2013 most specifically to the Rooster/Phoenix; this sign has the best luck in 2013 over any other in the zodiac. As a result, their image should be used as a Feng Shui charm wherever possible. Average fortunes exist for the Ox, Rat, Horse, and Dog. As mentioned above, Boars need protection throughout the year as they are the sign being attacked in 2013 – be careful, particularly

Page 53: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

as it relates to your health. It is a good year for Pigs to adopt a simple diet and standard exercise regimen.

A number of additional directions are problematic in 2013 – the sickness star is residing in the Southwest, the Three Killings in the East, and the (5) Yellow in the center. The East should be avoided as much as possible, even though it is the good luck direction for the period 2004-2024 (8th Yun); if your front door faces this direction, be sure to use protective Feng Shui here, or perhaps use a side or back entrance as the main pathway in and out of your home. Because of these issues, North-South alignments are best in 2013 – be sure to face your bed and/or desk in these directions, depending on whether you want to enhance Water (face North) or Fire (face South).

Individual Forecasts by SignSnake

Snakes – the spotlight is on you in 2013, so you will either 'make it' or 'break it.' Be careful of the Tai Sui which governs over your sign this year; stay optimistic and continue to put plans into place that will set the next twelve years of your life in motion! You must protect your fortune this year, Snake – you know you have a habit of losing all the money you accumulate, and this is definitely one of those years when it could happen (again). Work hard to safeguard your investments – in fact, you are better off storing your money away in retirement funds or long term investments for use in later years.

As always, the Snake must be careful in relationships. If you are in a relationship, be careful and try to be faithful. Do not engage in extramarital relationships or you will get caught and possibly divorced. Heed this advice wisely, Snake. If you are looking for love, try not to get too emotional and do not let your feelings guide your actions. This is a year for being logical – not instinctual. Work

Page 54: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

to develop a deeper understanding of love, particularly from the perspective of how your partner views your commitment to the relationship.

Be careful with travel this year, Snake, as the Tai Sui will be watching every move you make. From a health perspective, pay close attention to your body and protect your stomach, bladder, eyes, blood and heart from disease – it is easier to practice prevention than to be reactive in nature. If you are a Snake born in 1953, pay special attention to your health; you should immediately implement a wellness regimen to improve your outlook.

Feng Shui Tips: Place a Tai Sui charm in the East Southeast; carry a Rooster or Phoenix charm for good luck; friendly relationships with Roosters, Oxen, and Monkeys will help you during the year; avoid placing your bed in the North Northwest, facing the East Southeast.

Horse

The Horse has the potential for unexpected wealth this year, so be determined and find it! In addition, once you find wealth, make sure you hold onto it – Snakes years are notorious for bringing about financial windfalls and subsequent losses. Try not to be too stubborn and aloof this year – it will help you avoid trouble. Plan for ups and downs and stay flexible as you will be very busy this year. The idea of starting over in 2013 is especially relevant for the Horse; this is a good year for you to try and experience new things, especially if you have a partner to share these experiences with. There is good fortune in relationships for you in 2013 – perhaps you can combine all of your luck together and find a partner that actually will pick up the check for once! Feng Shui Tips: Position your bed and desk in a North-South alignment to maximize your fortune in 2013; carry a Feng Shui knot to help you navigate the ups and downs this year (image below).

Ram/Sheep

As with most signs in 2013, this will be a year of ups and downs for you, Ram. Be very careful with your financial and professional endeavors and expect a lot of instability. Keep your emotions in check this year or you will cause problems in your relationship as well. If you with someone, this is the year where you will discover whether your partner is willing to help you through difficulty. Those who have paired with a helpful partner should lean on them in 2013; those who have chosen otherwise may be best off cutting ties now. If you are single, it may be best to wait this year out before entering into a relationship. The Year of the Snake 2013 is just too chaotic for you, Sheep, to bring someone else into the fold at this time.

The Ram/Sheep must be prepared for major changes in his or her career this year. The workplace is unstable for you in 2013, but this does not mean there are no opportunities. Perhaps you may get a new supervisor, lose one client for another, or lose one job only to get another. Because of this, it’s best to put as much money away as possible so you can save it for when you need it most. Do not waste your money going out to dinner – there are real costs coming down the pike and you will unfortunately be

Page 56: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

unable to conjure money out of thin air this year, Ram. If you have not planned for financial stability in the past, this may be a very difficult year for you. Snake years are notorious for large gains followed by large losses. Start saving now before it is too late. The best way to solve this dilemma is to change your lifestyle and make sacrifices. Protect your health and dedicate yourself to a low-cost exercise regimen and diet. Be careful signing contracts and be sure to read all the fine print so you do not agree to something you later regret. If you do all of this, unexpected wealth may find its way into your hands, saving the day.

Remember – difficult times will pass, and with it will bring good fortune. Evaluate your friends in 2013 and find out who is really on your side; get rid of the others as they will only drag you down this year. Learn as many lessons as possible and know that good times are on the horizon. Use your emotional intelligence to get through and you will persevere.

Feng Shui Tips: Place a fountain near your door to foster the flow of money into your home; turn on the fountain for a few hours a day and add coins when needed to enhance its effects. Avoid positioning your bed in the Southwest direction – instead, place it in the North, facing South, or vice-versa.

Monkey

Monkeys must be very careful about their health this year as they are indirectly affected by the Tai Sui and the 2/Sickness Star, which returns to its native position in the Southwest where the Monkey dwells. Work to respect authority figures this year; it is better to remain silent and avoid engaging in gossiping. It will only come back to hurt you. Monkeys must also protect their main source of income or wealth in 2013; remember, Snake years are notorious for financial gain and loss. If the entrepreneurial Monkey times everything right and waits until the second half of the year to start a

Page 57: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

business, chances are it will lead to good profits. Just be sure to check the fine print before signing any legal documents.

Monkeys can experience some good fortune in 2013 thanks to their Liu He 六 合 relationship with the Snake; remember that Six Harmony relationships provide left-right balance between two signs, like opposites attracting one another. In this pairing, the resourcefulness of the Monkey offsets the mental acumen of the Snake and vice versa. The Monkey is therefore a sign that can cut through the difficulties of this Snake year. There will be a lot of competition this year for the Monkey, both in school and the workplace, so stay focused and try to take things more seriously than you usually do. It should be noted that female Monkeys will have a better fortune than males in 2013.

Feng Shui Tips: Position two Pi Yao 貔貅, a Chinese mythological creature which resembles a flying lion-dragon (image below), on your desk for protection; fill a jar with soil and two quartz crystals and place in the Southwest to avoid illness; hang a Tai Sui charm in the South-Southeast direction, facing North-Northwest.

Rooster/Phoenix

The Rooster (male) and Phoenix (female) have the best fortune of all the signs this year – congratulations and be sure to maximize your potential. This is not the type of year where you should sit around waiting for things to happen. Go out there and get what is

Page 58: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

yours, Rooster; wake up early and sing to the world! Things will go smoothly all year, so if you have dreams or plans, this is the time to make them happen - career, education, investments, wealth, etc. There is money out there for the taking, Rooster – I hope you find it. Perhaps you can share some of your wealth, Rooster? If you do, more will come your way.

Feng Shui Tips: Carry a Rooster or Phoenix keychain for good luck; hang a Fu 福 Charm in the West, facing East; place four bamboo plants in the Southeast to enhance relationships.

Dog

The Dog emerges from a very difficult year in 2012, given the presence of the Broken Year Star (Sui Po 嵗破) in the Year of the Dragon. The Year of the Snake 2013 will bring you better times, but still average in nature when compared to the other signs. There is the potential for unexpected wealth this year, so be sure to work hard and, in time, your efforts will be rewarded. There is also good fortune for you in career endeavors; this energy can be enhanced through the use of crystals, such as quartz or jade.

You must position your bed correctly this year if you are to smooth out your relationships. Avoid East and West at all costs. Try to keep things calm between you and your significant other or problems will result. This recommendation applies to your health

Boar

The Boar is the last sign of the zodiac, and always has a balance of good and bad each year, being the 'baby' of the signs. In 2013, this is complicated because the Boar has the Broken Year Star (Sui Po 嵗破), which signifies major declines in one's health and good fortune. The Tai Sui is watching you, Pig, so be sure to obey the law at all times and do not try to accomplish too much. This is a good year to lay low and plan for the future. When danger is present, it is important to be extra careful at all times.

Because the Pig is in direct conflict with the Snake, 2013 will be a very rocky year, especially as it pertains to relationships. Do not engage in extramarital affairs, and do not lie, cheat or steal or it will come back to hurt you ten times over. Its best to focus on your education this year – there will be competition present in the workplace that may be too much for you to handle. It’s better to spend this year getting smarter than waging an uphill battle.

Be sure to avoid facing South-Southeast; you would rather have your back towards this direction at all times, Pig. The North Northwest corner of your home, bedroom, or office should be kept

Page 60: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

quiet – do not slam doors here, and do not sleep in this direction. Avoid doing any kinds of renovations in central areas, and avoid the Southwest to protect your health. Arguments will come from the West and the East will be

Feng Shui Tips: Tai Sui charm in the South Southeast; crystal jewelry for protection; protective charms in the Northwest, Center, West, and East; place a fish tank, aquarium, or fountain in the Northern area of your office to help with work-related problems; lock all doors and windows in the Northwest and avoid placing your bed or desk in this direction.

Mouse

The Mouse has an average fortune in 2013 that can be improved significantly through the use of Feng Shui water elements. Friends are available this year to help you, Mouse, so be sure to maximize the use of your communication skills to network throughout the year. Remember, there is a lot of wealth to be gained and lost this year, Mouse – you have to maximize the gains and minimize the losses. Once you gather money, store it away in a safe or another secure place – if you flaunt your wealth this year, it will be taken from you. Cut back on large purchases and expenses – simplifying your financial situation would greatly assist you in reaching your goals. Only enter into investments if you have researched them appropriately. Be careful signing contracts – make sure to read all the fine print.

Your health can be greatly affected this year because of all the changes and stress that comes with it. You need to sleep well, eat well, and rest enough – no burning the candle at both ends, Mouse – even though we know you love to do it. Regular meditation and exercise (like recreational sports or exercise classes) would help you through the year. Relationships will be difficult this year too, so try to avoid arguments and keep things slow and steady. Your career will bring you so much stress this year, Mouse, that it’s

Page 61: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

better to unwind with close family at home than to go out all the time.

Feng Shui Tips: An Ox ally charm will help make things smoother in 2013; place your bed in the North, facing South to maximize the good fortune of the year; place an aquarium in the North section of your home or office for good fortune in your career; place four bamboo plants in water in the Southeast to assist with relationships.

This is also a good year for you to nourish your close relationships; work with your loved ones using symbols of protection and strength. Stay calm and avoid conflict; otherwise you will lose all your good fortune. Be sure to watch your health this year, Ox – do not overexert yourself or you will experience significant ups and downs. Page 62: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

Tiger

The Tiger is in for a very difficult year in 2013 – remember, Snakes and Tigers do not get along. There are big money problems ahead for you, Tiger – protect yourself as much as possible and avoid bankruptcy at all costs. If you are going to attract money this year, Tiger, you are going to have to work very hard to earn it. No matter what you decide to do this year, be sure to use your intelligence – do not wing it this year or make gut decisions. Be very careful of authority figures that may stand in your way – it’s better to turn around and find another way than to confront them in the Snake year.

Think of 2013 as a transition year for you, Tiger – as it pertains to your life, you are stepping out of one boat and placing your feet into another that will not be ready for sail until 2014. Avoid feeling jealous of others this year – you must understand that things will eventually turn around for you, Tiger. Be careful of your enemies this year; it is best to let things go than to continue to harbor ill will towards others. You will tend to blame others instead of developing a heightened sense of awareness. If you just lay low and watch your health this year, Tiger, you will get through things just fine. If you try to start arguments or new relationships, things will quickly get complicated for you.

Feng Shui Tips: Avoid using a front door that faces East in 2013 – use a side or back entrance if necessary; avoid placing your bed or desk in the East; maximize use of the Southern direction, including

Page 63: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

placing your bed or desk there; use protection charms in the East and West.

Rabbit

The Rabbit will have an average year in 2013; watch your emotions this year or your relationships will suffer considerably. Freaking out on your spouse or significant other will only lead him or her astray. Instead, be careful and nurture those who are most important to you. Rabbit, you must develop emotional intelligence this year if you are to survive the wrath of the serpent. The Snake is too cunning for you to outsmart it with your playful energy; do not make gut decisions this year, take your time to think through all of your decisions, especially as they pertain to your close family and friends. Feng Shui Tips: plan travel to the North; avoid the Southwest direction to protect your health; place four bamboo plants in the Southeast to assist with your relationships; do not position your bed or desk in the Eastern or Western directions.

Dragon

After kicking off the next twelve years of fortune for this sign in 2012, the Dragon will experience average fortune this year – similar

Page 64: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

to the Rabbit, be sure to keep your emotions in check. Authority figures will prevent you from accomplishing your goals if you try to take them head on. Instead, develop emotional intelligence and use your extensive network of friends to get by. There are so many people waiting to help you this year, Dragon: put your ego away and let them. Oftentimes, the Dragon feels as if they have to do everything themselves, primarily so that they get “credit” for doing it. In 2013, this is not going to happen – instead, work with others to gain those “medals” collectively. This is how you can accomplish the many projects that are currently on your task list – it is also the secret for generating the necessary funds to carry things through to completion. If you try to go at it alone, you will fail – it’s as plain and simple as that.

Dragon, you have achieved for so long – 2013 is a great year to give back as a mentor, coach, or adviser. Your ego has been bruised and beaten now for many years, why not take on an understudy to help you realize that you can really reach your achievements through others? It will be hard for you, as the lessons run deep, but it is key to your spiritual development. Otherwise you may end up alone, without others supporting you. Don’t be so attached to accolades from others – instead, watch those you train receive those accolades, and know in your heart it was because of you that such achievement resulted. This is a major shift in thought for you, Dragon, but remember that Snake years are a time for new beginnings. Out with the old, in with the new – and this is never truer than in 2013. Change results in difficult times – make sure that your underlings help you navigate out of crisis this year, and you will make it unscathed. Just to be sure – take care of your Lungs and Stomach, and use the Northern direction to your advantage.

Feng Shui Tips: Place your bed and desk in the Northern direction for good fortune; place an aquarium or waterfall in the North for good career fortune; avoid the Eastern and Western directions.

2013 Feng Shui ForecastOverview

Each year, the numbers of the Lo Shu 洛 書 Magic Square fly through the nine palaces (the eight cardinal directions plus the center) to establish four lucky and four misfortunate directions, each corresponding to a trigram. As mentioned earlier, this ancient mathematical system is one of the basic methods for calculating Feng Shui fortunes in any given year, month, day, or even hour. Based on the alignment of the numbers in the Magic Square, as compared to positioning of the Eight Trigrams and the Nine Palaces of the 8th Yun, fortunes are assigned to the eight main directions of 45° around the 360° of a compass during each particular year, with each section further divided into 24 subdivisions of 15° each. One can use this information to align your home or office to maximize the energetic potential of the year.

The 2013 Magic Square alignment represents the original positioning of the stars as follows:

SE S SW4 green四綠巽

9 purple九紫離

2 black二黑坤

E3 jade三碧震

5 yellow五黃中

7 red七赤兌 W

8 white八白艮

1 white一白坎

6 white六白乾

Years in which the stars “fly” back into their native positions “double” the potential amount of luck or misfortune in a given direction. The aspects and characteristics of each star are also accentuated in each native direction. When analyzing the eight main directions, there are a few basic guidelines to consider.

Annual GuidanceEvery year, all people can work to maximize their usage of good directions while at the same time avoiding or mitigating issues in the problematic directions. In 2013, there are a number of things that require management with Feng Shui:

Beneficial Energy in the Northern Directions Romance, Education and Gui Ren Mentor Stars #2 Black Sickness Star in the Southwest #7 Red Argument Star in the West #5 Yellow Star in the Center Sui Po Broken Year Star in the North-Northwest Tai Sui Protector God in the South-Southeast San Sha Three Killings in the East region

Home Direction GuidanceThe direction you face when walking out the front door of your primary residence represents the overall fortune of the home and its inhabitants in any given year.

If your home ‘faces’ North in 2013, all dwellers will have the opportunity to reap the good fortune and benefits it contains. A home with a front door facing North should place an aquarium or waterfall in this direction to bring positive energy into the home or office – especially as it relates to one’s career.

If your home ‘faces’ East in 2013, those living there will be afflicted by misfortune unless protective Feng Shui is applied. Perhaps

Page 68: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

consider using an alternative door or your garage as the “main” entryway of the year. At the very minimum, homes with front doors facing East should hang a protective Ba Gua mirror over their door to deflect problematic energy.

Individual GuidanceYour individual’s birth star is located in its native direction for the year – this means each person could potentially experience double the good fortune or misfortune present in his or her palace’s direction. It also singifies that the direction will strongly illustrate the charateristics of its native sign.

If your star is located in a direction that brings good fortune, be sure in 2013 to maximize your use of it; if your direction brings challenges, you must either divert energy with Feng Shui or avoid it entirely – it simply depends on how flexible you and your family members can be with your living space. Whether an amateur or expert Feng Shui practitioner, work with what you can and build on your experience each year. In no time, you will be reaping the useful benefits of Feng Shui!

Directional AnalysisOne (1) White - North

The One White star flies into its home position in the North in 2013, representing the luckiest direction of the year. Congratulations One White star people! This also greatly assists homes and offices with front doors facing the North – there is great fortune in one’s career in 2013. There will be many opportunities for promotions at work – be smart and stay on top things throughout the year, as the greatest benefits will result next winter. Be sure to take full advantage of your luck this year because the Snake enhances your prospects of wealth – just be careful to safeguard your assets and

Page 69: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

hold onto you profits. This is also a good year to develop your emotional self, especially as it pertains to your relationship – it would be great to plan some travel with your significant other. There is great success in education this year as well, particularly for children, who can become leaders in their classrooms. Be sure to expend energy improving your real estate position this year – it would be a good time to make home improvements in this direction to increase the overall value of your property. Be sure to place a fish tank here to enhance your career endeavors.

Feng Shui Tips: use grey, blue and black colors in your home and with clothing; place a fish tank in the North for career success; place your bed in this direction to improve your relationships; accentuate your front door if it faces North to bring positive energy into your home throughout the year.

Six (6) White – Northwest

The Northwest represents the second of three lucky positions in 2013 as the Six (6) White star carries heavenly strength and power into this direction. The Six White corresponds to the trigram Qian 乾, which represents Heaven and is symbolic of pure Yang energy, strength and power. Homes with a front door that face this direction will have good fortune as well. This star brings the possibility for promotions at work; it is a good year to gain assistance from your boss, Shi Fu, or Elder, thanks to the presence of Tian Yi Gui Ren 天 乙 贵 人 , commonly known as Heavenly Mentors who come down from the celestial realm to assist you in your endeavors. Like having a guardian angel on your shoulder, listening to the wisdom of your advisors and trusted supervisors will greatly help you achieve in 2013. This is a good direction for travel, relocation, immigration, or a career change as well - the Northwest can help assist you reach your most lofty aspirations. There is good luck here for investment gains, especially in companies that transport money.

Page 70: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

Because General Tai Sui Xu Dan 太 歲 徐 單 sits in the South Southeast, the opposite direction, North Northwest, lies in the region called the “Broken Year” or Sui Po 嵗破 star, which brings even more misfortune and authority-related problems to those who dwell here. Be particularly careful in this specific section of the Northwest and avoid traveling to these areas of the world.

Feng Shui Tips: place metallic items in this direction to enhance your financial situation, wear or display jewelry in this direction to increase wealth – especially gold; hang six coins here to generate wealth; place a Ru Yi 如 意 scepter here to enhance your connection to the celestial realm (pictured below).

Eight (8) White – Northeast

The Eight White flies back to its home direction in 2013, bringing with it prosperity, wealth, and luck. The Northeast is the third of the three lucky positions this year – there is good fortune here for building wealth, purchasing a home, undertaking entrepreneurial endeavors, and having a wedding. A house with its front door facing this direction will be very prosperous for everyone in the home – in fact, individuals who purchase a home with a front door facing this direction in 2013 will have great good fortune for many years to come. If you already own a home that faces this direction, be sure to accentuate this lucky entrance with positive Feng Shui items. Remember this one time, Eight (8) White individuals: you can get rich through real estate transactions in 2013. The Northeast is also very beneficial for children, marriages, and relationships; this would be a good year for Eight (8) White individuals to commit to a long term relationship, conceive a child, or get married.

Page 71: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

Feng Shui Tips: place a jar of soil in this direction for good luck; display ceramics, jade, and crystals in this direction to enhance your fortune; place your bed or desk in this direction to assist you in building wealth; ensure this direction is well lighted in your home; having a family room in this direction would be beneficial; store financial papers in this direction to enhance wealth.

Three (3) Jade – East

The Three (3) Jade star flies into the East in 2013; although this is its native position, misfortune is prevalent here as Wood energy is very problematic this year because it stirs up the fiery energy of the Snake. On top of that, the San Sha 三煞 or Three Killings reside here. The San Sha represents three fundamental types of misfortune:

Jie Sha 劫煞 – loss of material items, including wealth Zai Sha 灾煞 – brings illness, calamities, and disasters Sui Sha 歲煞 – annual/yearly losses

While the San Sha sits in the East, it affects homes with a front door facing West; the opposite direction of a home’s front entrance is referred to as its sitting position. What this means is that you always want the San Sha out in front of you, where you can see the misfortune developing. If, on the other hand, your back is facing the San Sha, misfortune can develop and affect you before you can defend yourself properly. As a result, do not sit with your back facing East in this direction and do not routinely use doors here or you face the possibility of disturbing the San Sha.

The East will be a big problem in 2013. Keep things quiet here. This is not the place to hang a wind chime. It should be left undisturbed as best as possible. Be sure to travel carefully so as to avoid accidents; in addition, watch the health of your Liver and Gall Bladder. Watch the health of your extremities as well. Thoroughly

Page 72: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

review all contractual agreements and avoid lawsuits at all costs. If a door is facing this direction, it should never be slammed, or it will lead to hostility in the family, with tempers flaring, riots, and lots of noise. It is advised to apply defensive Feng Shui in this direction or you will be constantly fighting all the time – which could provoke lawsuits that land you in jail. Three (3) Jade star individuals should contemplate relocating this year to avoid these problems.

Feng Shui Tips: Hang protective charms in the West, facing East, to ward off the San Sha; avoid using the image or properties of wood in this direction; keep this direction well lit, but undisturbed, throughout the year; do not undertake renovations in this direction in 2013; do not position your bed or desk facing this direction; use images of the Fire element to ‘burn’ up the Wood element present in the East, such as candles or fireplaces, or create a display of nine red objects.

Five (5) Yellow – Center

The Five Yellow flies back to the center in 2013, keeping it somewhat contained as compared to the past two years, but still bringing bad luck to the grounds in this area. Be sure to avoid construction here or disturbing the energy of the land. Do not slam doors in this area or create too much noise or commotion, otherwise tragedy and accidents will occur.

Avoid breaking ground, digging, or performing household renovations in this direction in 2013; instead, it is best to leave the entire area undisturbed. Sleeping or working in this area will result in diseases of the Liver and Spleen. Be mindful and consider practicing more meditation; otherwise, your mind will race and your emotions will get the best of you.

Feng Shui Tips: Do not play loud music in this direction; do not slam doors and keep windows and doors closed at all times; do not begin construction in this area; place a round table or white rug in

Page 73: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

the center of a family or dining room to harmonize energies; place a metal wind chime here to diffuse energy; avoid placing your bed or desk in this direction.

Two ( 2 ) Black – Southwest

The Two Black flies to its native position in the Southwest for 2013, bringing with it illness, disease, sickness, and relationship problems. Be sure to leave this direction alone - movement here is highly discouraged, as it can ‘stir’ up health concerns. Children and the elderly are especially prone to disease here, as are those who are already sickly or battling an illness. If you are working through any medical issues, you must be sure to avoid either placing your bed in this direction in 2013 or sleeping in a bedroom located in the Southwest.

This direction will bring sickness, pain, skin disorders, stomach diseases, and the death of many in these regions of the world. If a door is facing this direction, the inhabitants will be susceptible to illness or unexpected health changes, from skin or digestive diseases to conditions requiring surgery, such as cancer. Once again – do not activate this area or you will provoke disease.

Feng Shui Tips: use metal items here, such as six coins, to vent the consumption of the Two (2) Black star; avoid using fiery colors in this direction (red, purple, pink, orange, etc.); avoid placing candles in this direction; place healing charms in this direction to ward off illness; do not place your bed or desk in this direction; do not actively use doors in this direction.

Four (4) Green – Southeast

The Southeast is a place to achieve academically, gain popularity, and attract ‘significant others’ in 2013 – it is also where the Snake and the annual Tai Sui resides. From an educational perspective, placing your desk in this direction will considerably accelerate your

Page 74: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

academic progress this year. This is a year where Four (4) Green star individuals can take leaps forward in many aspects of their lives, including long-term romantic endeavors. In addition, there are solid opportunities to display skills and knowledge in the workplace; it is optimal to perform outstanding work at all times in 2013. If you do this, you will be rewarded for your efforts.

Unfortunately, Tai Sui Xu Dan 太 歲 徐 單 resides in the South Southeast direction (142.6-157.5°), acting as the protector god for the year, so be sure to follow the rules and work to avoid any bad luck from surfacing. It is best to avoid facing the Tai Sui during the year – instead, use the energy of the Tai Sui behind you to maximize your efforts during the year.

Feng Shui Tips: hang a Tai Sui charm in the South Southeast; place four plants of your liking in this direction to foster energy here; place pictures of your relationship in this direction to enhance romance.

Seven (7) Red – West

The Seven Red flies into its native position in the West for 2013, carrying with it violence, bloodshed, death, loss, robbery, and theft. This is a dangerous direction in 2013 because this star represents the military and, as mentioned earlier, this direction opposes the San Sha 三煞 or Three Killings in the East. Avoid this area as best as possible and be sure to use Feng Shui to offset problems in this direction. Protect yourself from injury, particularly accidents involving metal. Lock your belongings away and close all doors and windows; otherwise, you may lose material wealth or valuable goods. There is a high risk of bankruptcy in this direction, so be sure to invest conservatively and be careful when traveling West.

There is some good fortune in this direction for endeavors in the arts and entertainment industry, but be careful to guard your wealth and possessions. While it is possible for Seven (7) red individuals

to generate wealth in this direction, the overall layout is generally adverse and, as such, it is recommended you lay low. Be careful of scandals and affairs, and avoid gossiping about your friends and coworkers. Six coins or a copper gourd would assist here.

Feng Shui Tips: Place six coins or a copper gourd in this direction to ward off evil influences; avoid placing your bed or desk in this direction; avoid sitting in this direction with your back facing East to avoid the perils of the San Sha; display a water fountain in this direction to harmonize; use black, blue and grey colors here to minimize disturbances.

Nine ( 9 ) Purple – South

The Nine Purple star flies into the South in 2013, bringing with it a festive energy that can create benefit for these individuals and homes with front doors facing in this direction. This is a position for ensuring that auspicious times are celebrated – whether it is a wedding, childbirth, promotion at work, or a new business venture. If you are able to harness the positive energy of this direction in 2013, it will bring good luck to one’s writing and generate years of wealth. On the other hand, if the blossoming energy of this direction is left to its own devices, it will result in debauchery and problems within the home. The South is the location where Fire is present, so be sure to engage in joyful acts here. Do not fall prey to the Snake and let your fire burn unnecessarily here – instead, use this energy to fuel your spiritual development. The Fire of the South must be harnessed through the heart or you will get burned.

Feng Shui Tips: use fiery images here, such as burning candles, fireplaces, or color schemes with red, orange, pink, or purple; hang a picture of a Horse in this direction for good luck; place fresh bouquets of flowers here to assist with the blossoming of new energy; display nine crystals or coins in this direction to enhance your fortune.

New Year’s Day TraditionsRemember to consider the following age-old advice when welcoming in any Chinese New Year:

The Chinese believe that all household clutter should be removed and the home thoroughly cleaned before the start of the New Year. By ‘sweeping away’ any remaining bad luck from the preceding year, it opens up space to bring in good luck for the New Year. However, do not clean on the New Year, or you will risk sweeping away your good fortune!

It is good luck to have a lion dance performed on the premises during New Year’s festivities to help ward off evil spirits and welcome the good fortune of the New Year.

Noodles are traditionally served on New Year’s Day, but be sure to keep their length intact, or else it is said you will ‘cut’ your fortune for the year.

When traditionally giving money to friends and relatives for the Chinese New Year, be sure to enclose it in a red envelope for protection and give in even numbers of tens or hundreds – odd numbers should only be used for funerals. The number four (4) should be avoided, as it is associated with death, while the number eight (8) is considered lucky.

A number of plants are often used to gather good fortune on the New Year, such as Bamboo, Kumquat, and Narcissus, whose presence is said to generate wealth and prosperity.

Many Chinese will keep their lights on the night before New Years and even prop doors and windows open so as to allow the good luck of the year to enter into their homes and offices.

Most Chinese people will not cut or wash their hair around the New Year to avoid ‘cutting’ or ‘washing’ their fortune away.

Gong Yi Fa Cai 恭喜發財 does not mean “Happy New Year” – instead, it translates as “Congratulations and Be Prosperous!”

Compatibility ChartsEach animal sign has a relationship with the other eleven signs as depicted below:

San He 三合 or Three Harmonies

ELEMENT ZODIAC PARTNERSWATER Mouse Dragon MonkeyWOOD Rabbit Ram BoarFIRE Horse Dog Tiger

METAL Rooster Ox Snake

These alignments are extremely favorable and lead to harmonious relationships and partnerships. Each trinity is comprised of three signs, four apart, with the zodiac located in the cardinal direction corresponding to the associated element. One can say these signs, when together, are like ‘two or three peas in a pod.’

Liu He 六合 or Six Harmonies

WEST/NORTH SIGNS EAST/SOUTH SIGNSMouse OxBoar TigerDog Rabbit

Rooster DragonMonkey Snake

Ram Horse

These alignments balance each other out and provide for a complementary partnership that maximizes strengths and minimizes weaknesses of the paired zodiac signs. One can say that for these relationships, ‘opposites attract.’

These adversarial alignments should be avoided as they represent signs that fall in opposition (e.g., six apart) from each other around the Chinese zodiac wheel, oftentimes resulting in conflict and arguments.

Nine Palace Compatibilities

Each of the Palaces described above belongs to one of two districts, as illustrated below, which sets compatibilities in motion:

Eastern District Palaces Western District PalacesShao Yang 小陽 Tai Yang 太陽Shao Yin 少陰 Tai Yin 太陰1 White 一白 2 Black 二黑3 Jade 三碧 6 White 六白

4 Green 四綠 7 Red 七赤9 Purple 九紫 8 White 八白

The Eastern District consists of all the Water, Wood, and Fire palaces, while the Western District consists of the Earth and Metal palaces. It is more compatible to be associated with individuals who or directions that reside in your own district, as there is more

Page 88: 2013 Eco-Med Astrology & Feng Shui Forecast

harmony, happiness, and contentment. On the other hand, being around those from the opposing district can be harmful and hurtful, often bringing about trouble and arguments.

The best palace pairings (**** in the table below) bring about fresh energy or prolong the longevity of each person. These are the best relationships because they perfectly balance out within the Western and Eastern Districts. The next best pairings (***) bring about heavenly healing or hidden rewards as they also represent relationships within the Western and Eastern Districts. As one would expect, the other pairings are not as fortunate, as they match palaces from the Eastern District with those from the Western District. For example, the next pairing (**) can bring about sickness, arguments, and misfortune, while the least fortunate pairing (*) should be avoided at all costs.
