Monday July 22

Welcome to the first day of camp! Today, you will be introduced to the week’s activities.

There will be six teams. Each team will be a planet . Each planet wants to join the United Federation of

Planets, but only one will be allowed to. Throughout the camp, you will do activities to help your planet

 join the UFP.

Your teams are going to make a poster for your planet. Each poster will have a logo for your planet and a

chant for your species.

Your team’s logo should be connected to the name of your team’s planet. So think of an interesting

design for your team, and then draw it on the poster

paper.

Your chant should be a short song (one or two lines). It

should be about your species. You can write your chant

at the bottom of the poster.

When everyone is finished, you are going to stand up as

a team, and present the poster and chant.

Throughout the camp, you will be given stickers. If you

win an event, your team will get a sticker. If you are

quiet and acting well, you will get a sticker. If you help

other people use English, you will get a sticker. The

team with the most stickers will be the team that gets to

join the UFP. The winning team members get a special

prize.

 _____________________________________________________________________________________

After a short break, we will start the next group of exercises. You will be given some riddles in an alien

language. First, you must translate the language into English. Then, you must solve the riddles with your

team.

When you have finished that, you will be tested on your species’ brain capacity. You’ll be given a series

of brain teasers, and you must think of the correct answer! The faster you can solve them, the more

stickers you will get.

 _____________________________________________________________________________________

Finally, before you go home, you will write in your daily log. A log is like a journal. Write what happened

to you and your team on the paper.

Translation Challenge

Look at the following letters. Use them to translate the following sentences into English. Once you have

finished with the translation, solve the riddles with your team.

Tuesday July 23

Welcome to the second day of camp! Today we are going to cook, so I hope you’re hungry.

The meal’s ingredients might be a little strange, so first you must try and decipher the recipe.

Once you know which ingredient is which, you can start following the recipe and create the

meal.

Once everyone has finished making the meal, you can eat it! Enjoy your alien lunch.

After eating, you must write a food review. Tell us how you made the meal, and what you

thought of the taste.

 __________________________________________

In the third period, you will be introduced to the

council presentations. Your team must make a

presentation for your planet. Because you want

your planet to join the UFP, you must make a

presentation that will impress the judges.

The presentation will use large poster board. When

the introduction is finished, you will work together

in your teams to start researching for your planet.

You should research the culture on your planet.

What do your people like to do? What is their

history? What are some interesting facts about

their society? You may also want to include some pictures.

You can use the computers in the classroom to research your planet. If there are any pictures

you’d like to use, you can use the printer to print them out.

 ______________________________________________________________________________

Finally, you will write in your daily log and explain what happened today.

Wednesday July 24

Today, we are going to test your leadership skills, and judge how quickly you can solve tasks working

together. There will be different tasks to perform in different rooms. You need to work together in your

teams and accomplish the tasks as quickly as possible. A teacher will be there to judge your progress.

You can win stickers depending on your performance.

After the tasks have been completed, there will be a series of games. The games will rotate quickly so

everyone has an opportunity to win. This is a good chance to win many stickers for your team.

Because we will do a lot of exercising, it would

be a good idea to wear comfortable clothes.

Make sure they are cool, so you don’t get too

hot. It would also be a good idea to bring a waterbottle.

 ________________________________________

To cool down, you will work on your council

presentations. Your poster display should be

nearly finished by the time you are finished. Add as much information as you can today. If you need help

in getting information for your planet, ask a teacher for assistance.

 _____________________________________________________________________________________

At the end of the day, we will listen to some music. You can use the worksheet to listen to the song and

fill in the blanks. If you have the correct word, you can win some points for your team.

 _____________________________________________________________________________________

Before you go home, don’t forget to write an entry in your journal!

Tasks Description

Puzzle Task

In one room, each member of your team will be given a small piece of paper with a picture on

it, and a big piece of paper with nothing on it.

Each member of the team must draw the same picture that is on the little paper, onto the big

paper. When you are finished drawing, one team member will go across the room and look at

the real picture. That team member must tell the others how to put the puzzle together (in

English). That team member cannot touch any of the puzzle pieces.

The team that finishes their puzzle the quickest gets the most points.

Tongue Twister

In the other room, your team will be given a tongue twister. Form your team into a line. Every student in

your team must be able to perform the tongue twister without making a mistake. If someone makes a

mistake, then the entire line must say it again starting with the first person.

Each team will start with 15 points. Every time they make a single mistake, and start over, that team

loses one point.

Space Oddity Lyrics

Based on David Bowie’s song, and covered by Chris Hadfield

Ground Control to Major Tom.

Ground Control to Major Tom.

Lock your Soyuz hatch, and put your helmet on.

Ground Control to Major Tom.

Commencing countdown; engines on.

Detach from station, and may God’s love be with you.

This is Ground Control to Major Tom.

You’ve really made the grade.

And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear,

But it’s time to guide the capsule if you dare.

This is Major Tom to Ground Control,

I’ve left forevermore.

And I’m floating in a most peculiar way.

And the stars look very different today.

For here am I sitting in a tin can,

Far above the world..

Planet Earth is blue, and there’s nothing left to do.

Though I’ve flown one hundred thousand miles,

I’m feeling very still.

And before too long I know it’s time to go.

Our commander comes back down back to Earth and knows.

Ground Control to Major Tom,

The time is near near; there’s not too long.

Can you hear me, Major Tom?

Can you hear me, Major Tom?

Can you hear---

Here am I floating in my tin can.

Last glimpse of the world.

Planet Earth is blue, and there’s nothing left to do.

Thursday July 25

Today we are going to start the day with some short films. We will watch a few of them, and

then when we’re finished, you will choose one film to write a review about.

When writing the review, please write a summary of the film’s story. Then, explain what you

liked about it. Try to write in complete sentences.

Once everyone is finished writing, you will present your reviews by reading what you have

written. If your review is really well done, you will win sticker points for your team.

 ______________________________________________________________________________

Today, you won’t be working on your display. Instead you will plan and shoot a video. The video

will be a petition to join the UFP. You need to explain your case, and why you want to join the

UFP. Explain your planet’s culture and society. Explain how you would benefit if your planet was

accepted into the UFP.

You can write your script on a paper. You can have one student speak in the petition video, or

you can have everybody speak in turn. You will be given a camera to shoot the video. Zackary

will take everyone’s finished video files and make a video.

We will watch the finished videos on Friday morning.

 ______________________________________________________________________________

This will be the last day you write a journal entry! Tell us what you think of the entire camp, so

far! Which activities did you like the most? What should be improved? Let us know!

Remember, tomorrow will be the day you have your presentation. If you need to prepare

anything at your home, you should do it this afternoon or evening. If you are going to have a

presentation in costume, you should make the costume this evening. Don’t forget anything

when you come to school tomorrow!

Friday July 26

Welcome to the final day of camp! It may be the last day, but it’s also the most important day.

To start things off, we will watch the videos you shot yesterday. The best video will win sticker

points for its team.

Next, you will finish your preparations for the presentations. Add the finishing touches to your

poster, and do your best to memorize your speeches. Each student in the team must speak at

least once, and for at least one minute. If you need any last minute help, ask a teacher.

When everything is completed, the presentations will begin. When the other students are

speaking, please be quiet and listen carefully. Once a presentation is finished, the other teams

can ask questions to gain points. The teams with the best presentations will win the final points.

The team with the most points will be the winner of the camp. That team’s planet will join the

United Federation of Planets. The students in the winning team will get some special prizes.

Finally, before you go home, you can enjoy the wrap party! Have a great vacation!
