Applications received after the early deadline may be considered on a space-available basis.

SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS/COMMENTS (IF ANY) Some Teachers College degree programs require that applicants submit additional materials apart from the general Teachers College application components. For more information, please refer to the “Components of the Complete Application” section.

ABOUT THE GUIDE TO ADMISSION

HOW TO USE THE GUIDE

The Guide to Admission is published annually by the Office of Admission at Teachers College, Columbia University. The purpose of the guide is to introduce prospective students to the graduate degree programs available and assist with the admission process at Teachers College. Specific degree requirements and prerequisite requirements are listed in the Teachers College catalog (www.tc.columbia.edu/catalog). HOW TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION 1. CREATE AN APPLICATION ACCOUNT.

The Teachers College Application for Admission is available online at www.tc.columbia.edu/apply. When you first create your application account, you will create a username and password for future access to your application account. Please remember your username and password, as you will need them to retrieve your application decision. Teachers College does not have access to this information once it is created.

2. FILL OUT THE APPLICATION FORM FOR ADMISSION.

Indicate your degree program of interest and other required personal information. You may only have one active application to Teachers College at a time. Applicants applying to a certification program or cohort must indicate so on the application form.

We strongly encourage you to use a single e-mail address that will not expire before your desired term of entry for both the Application Form for Admission and the application account, as it will be used for all correspondence from the Office of Admission, including notification of your application decision.

3. UPLOAD YOUR STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND RÉSUMÉ.

The Application Form for Admission can only be submitted after uploading your Statement of Purpose and Résumé. If your program of interest requires one, your Writing Sample may also be uploaded online.

For more information on these requirements, please refer to the “Components of the Complete Application” section.

4. SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS

Transcripts from academic institution(s) in the United States or Canada can be uploaded to the online application. This includes any study-abroad programs or transfer credit not reflected on your transcript. For more information regarding transcript submission, please refer to the “Components of the Complete Application” section.

5. SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION FORM FOR ADMISSION.

The submission process requires three separate steps: 1) Confirming your application information 2) Paying the application fee 3) Submitting your electronic signature

Only after all three steps are completed will your application be marked as submitted and available for the Office of Admission to process. Please note only completed applications will be eligible for review.

6. RECEIVE YOUR TEACHERS COLLEGE IDENTIFICATION (TC ID) NUMBER.

You will receive your TC ID Assignment e-mail within two to five business days after the submission of your Application Form for Admission. The TC ID is a randomly generated eight-digit number preceded by the letter “T”. The TC ID is not your application account username. The TC ID is used to identify the applicant throughout the application and enrollment process.

7. SUBMIT YOUR REMAINING APPLICATION MATERIALS.

If your program of interest requires standardized test scores, request that your official score reports be sent directly to the Office of Admission from the Testing Center. For more information on standardized tests,

please refer to the “Components of the Complete Application” section.

You are responsible for collecting and submitting all remaining application requirements to the Office of Admission.

Application items not submitted online should bemailed in one package to:

Teachers College Office of Admission, Box 302525 West 120th Street New York, NY 10027-6696

Applicants using DHL, FedEx, or UPS can have their materials delivered to:

Teachers College Office of Admission Thorndike Hall, 3rd floor 525 West 120th Street New York, NY 10027-6696 Phone: (212) 678-3710

Applicants are encouraged to mail application materials while they continue to work on the online Application Form for Admission. To expedite the processing of your application, please include the Document Cover Sheet. The Document Cover Sheet may be downloaded from the online Application Form for Admission.

Under no circumstances can any application materials submitted to the Office of Admission be returned to the applicant or forwarded to another college, university, or third party. All records submitted in support of an Application for Admission become property of Teachers College. Please note only complete applications will be eligible for review.

8. RECEIVE APPLICATION STATUS UPDATES FROM THE OFFICE OF ADMISSION.

Once you have submitted your Application Form for Admission, you will receive e-mails updating you on the status of your application. Please note it is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure all application materials have been received.

If you are applying to a certification program or cohort, you must indicate so on your application form.

APPLICATION FEE $65 for first-time applicants, $35 for re-applicants The application fee is non-refundable.

The application fee must be submitted electronically through the online application (credit card or checking or savings account routing number). Application fees made by checking or savings account routing number must be drawn on a U.S. bank.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSEYou should present a carefully planned and written statement of two to three pages in length, double-spaced, describing your background, past work in the intended field of study, plans for graduate study and a professional career, or any other information you feel is relevant. TRANSCRIPTS Transcripts from academic institution(s) in the United States or Canada can be uploaded to the online application. Applicants are strongly encouraged to upload a copy of their transcript(s) to the online application. This is required from each college or university attended for academic credit for any period of time, showing all courses, grades and degrees received (if any). This includes any study-abroad programs or transfer credit not reflected on your undergraduate transcripts with full course titles and final grades. A transcript can be in the form of a scanned copy of an official transcript or an academic record from your institution’s Student Information System

COMPONENTS OF THE COMPLETE APPLICATION Below is a list of items that must be included to ensure a complete Application for Admission. Please note only complete applications will be eligible for review.

(SIS) portal. If uploading an academic record from your institution’s SIS portal please be certain that it contains the institution name, course titles and grade information and any academic comments. If not, then please upload a copy of your official transcript.

This feature is offered in order to save you time and ensure that a record of your academic progress is included with your submitted application. It eliminates the need to have transcripts mailed to us during the initial processing and review of your application and precludes any delays resulting from the non-receipt of a transcript.

Only if you are recommended for admission will you be required to submit official transcripts from all academic institutions listed on your application. Your offer of admission will be contingent upon the receipt and verification of your official transcripts. Teachers College reserves the right to rescind an offer of admission, if there is a discrepancy between the uploaded version/evaluation and the official original transcript(s).

Alumni from Teachers College prior to the year 2011 must resubmit transcripts other than a TC transcript. Alumni and current students do not need to submit a Teachers College transcript.

A course-by-course evaluation is required for all post-secondary credentials (undergraduate and graduate, if applicable) for academic coursework completed outside of the United States and Canada. Note, this does not pertain to students from the United States and Canada who spend a semester or year abroad, often referred to as “study abroad.” For more information, please refer to the “International Students” section

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Teachers College requires two letters of recommendation, with a maximum of three. Letters of recommendation should be written by individuals who can comment from personal knowledge on your academic or professional qualifications for graduate study.

Wherever possible, letters of recommendation should be submitted from academic sources. However, if you have been out of school for a number of years, professional recommendations may be used in most cases. Recommendations written by family members or friends are not appropriate for the purposes of this application. A credentials file at a previous college or university may be submitted to fulfill the letters of recommendation requirement. However, if you have been out of school for five or more years, one additional current letter of recommendation should be submitted.

We strongly encourage you to submit letters of recommendation electronically through the Application Form for Admission. Only electronic letters of recommendation can be tracked by logging into your application account. If necessary, letters of recommendation

Page 7: 2013 Guide to Admission

will also be accepted in paper form. You must provide the name, title, address, and telephone number of each recommender in the space provided on the Application Form for Admission, as well as their method of submission (electronic or paper).

If a paper letter of recommendation is submitted, it must be accompanied by a Teachers College Recommendation Form (available for download through the Application Form for Admission). You should request that each letter of recommendation be returned to you in a sealed envelope with the signature of the recommender across the sealed flap. The recommender’s signature must appear on both the letter of recommendation and across the sealed flap. Open or unsigned letters of recommendation will not be accepted. If your recommender prefers, the letter may be mailed directly to the Office of Admission.

Some degree programs have special recommendation requirements, such as a third letter of recommendation or that at least one of your letters of recommendation is academic in nature. Please refer to the Guide to Admission Program Chart for any special Application Requirements pertaining to your program of interest.

STANDARDIZED TESTSStandardized tests are required by some, but not all, Teachers College degree programs. All submitted test scores received by the Office of Admission will be available for review by the Admission Committee. Please refer to the Guide to Admission Program Chart for any standardized test requirements pertaining to your program of interest.

Official scores of any required standardized test, such as the TOEFL, GRE, or MAT must be reported directly to Teachers College Office of Admission by the Testing Centers. Official scores must be received by the stated deadline in order for an application to be eligible to be reviewed for admission. For the TOEFL, GRE, or other tests administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the assigned institution code for Teachers College is 2905. No department code should be indicated. Expired or unofficial scores will not be accepted.

If you received your baccalaureate (undergraduate) degree from an institution where English is not the sole official language of instruction you must submit official scores from an accepted English proficiency exam. The English proficiency exam is required regardless of where you received a graduate degree (if any).

Please note: • TheminimumTOEFLexamscorerequiredbyTeachersCollegeis100onthe

In addition, these programs have exam restrictions and minimum score requirements that differ from all other Teachers College programs. Please refer to the Guide to Admission Program Chart for more information.

SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Some degree programs require additional application materials including, but not limited to, standardized test scores, third letters of recommenda tion, or writing samples (separate from the Statement of Purpose). Please refer to the Guide to Admission Program Chart for the supplemental Application Requirements (if any) for your program of interest. Additional letters of recommendation and writing samples may be uploaded online as part of the Application Form for Admission. All other remaining application materials should be mailed with a document cover sheet to the Office of Admission.

NOTIFICATION OF DECISION

The length of the application review process varies from program to program. The Office of Admission will notify you via e-mail once a decision has been published. This notification will include instructions on how to retrieve your application decision through your application account. The official notification of the decision is the letter bearing the signature of the Director of Admission. Official decisions will not be mailed to applicants or given over the telephone.

For Summer/Fall applicants who submit a complete application by the published early application deadlines, it is our goal to publish decisions around mid-March. Spring term applicants and applicants applying after the early deadline will be notified on a rolling basis.

If you are admitted to Teachers College, your decision letter will contain a hyperlink to your customized Admitted Student Website and Admission Response Form.

In order to ensure your place in a program, you must submit a $300 U.S. nonrefundable tuition deposit to Teachers College by the deposit deadline indicated in your admission letter. The tuition deposit must be submitted electronically and through the Admission Response Form (credit card or checking or savings account routing number). Deposits made by checking or savings account routing number must be drawn on a U.S. bank. Upon enrollment, the tuition deposit will be credited to your student account.

International students must hold, or be in the process of obtaining, the equivalent of a U.S. baccalaureate degree in order to be eligible for admission to Teachers College. Applicants who do not meet this requirement will not have their application reviewed for admission.

You are expected to collect and prepare international educational credentials well in advance of the application deadline. Incomplete records will not be reviewed for admission. You should not submit bank statements, proof of funds, or photocopies of passports with application materials. Be certain that any documentation not issued in English is accompanied by a notarized English translation.

A course-by-course evaluation is required for all post-secondary credentials (undergraduate and graduate, if applicable) for academic coursework completed outside of the United States and Canada. Note, this does not pertain to students from the United States and Canada who spend a semester or year abroad, often referred to as “study abroad.”

Teachers College will accept evaluations from World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) and American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO). Note that WES, ECE and AACRAO provide several types of evaluations. Select the course-by-course evaluation option to ensure your evaluation meets our requirements for admission review. If you already completed an evaluation from a different agency please contact the Office of Admission to confirm whether or not we can accept the evaluation. For admission purposes evaluations must include degree(s) equivalency to a U.S. degree (if any), all coursework, grades and credits for each course and periods of enrollment.

Applications are not considered complete without a course-by-course evaluation. Teachers College administrators will review the evaluations. The determination of degree equivalency to U.S. degrees is at the discretion of the College. The evaluation provided to Teachers College becomes an official academic record and the sole property of Teachers College upon its receipt.

If you received your baccalaureate (undergraduate) degree from an institution where English is not the sole official language of instruction you must submit official scores from an accepted English proficiency exam. We accept the TOEFL and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The English proficiency exam is required regardless of where you received a graduate degree (if any). For more information on standardized tests, please refer to the “Components of the Complete Application” section.

RESIDENTIAL SERVICES

HOUSING OPTIONSTeachers College offers a variety of housing options for single and married students, students with domestic partners, and single parents. There are approximately 650 spaces available for single students and 150 apartments for students with families. Our five residence halls are located within a two-block radius of the Teachers College campus.

We strongly encourage you to apply for financial aid and scholarship consideration. To be considered for any scholarship aid offered by Teachers College, applicants must complete the Scholarship Application located on the Application for Admission. This is the only opportunity you will have to indicate your interest in scholarships for the entire duration of your academic program. We encourage all applicants to complete the Scholarship Application, if they wish to be considered for scholarships during their course of study at TC.

FINANCIAL AID SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FORMThe Financial Aid Scholarship Application is part of your degree Application for Admission through your online application account (www.tc.edu/apply). All students must complete the Scholarship Application to be considered for Teachers College scholarship. You will not be able to complete a Scholarship Application after you submit the degree Application for Admission. The Scholarship Application can only be submitted once during your course of study at TC. Scholarships are awarded on a funds-available basis, so it is in your best interest to meet your degree program’s early application deadline.

FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AIDIf you are eligible for federal financial aid, you must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for any scholarships requiring demonstrated financial need. Students applying for Spring or Summer 2014 entry must use the 2013-2014 FAFSA, while Fall 2014 applicants must use the 2014-2015 FAFSA, available in January 2014. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The institutional code for Teachers College is G03979.

FINANCIAL AIDAPPLYING FOR HOUSINGWe strongly encourage you to apply for housing as early as possible, as spaces are limited. You do not need to wait until your application for admission is complete in order to apply for housing.

The Application for Housing is available online through your application account (www.tc.columbia. edu/apply). There is a $30 non-refundable housing application fee.

Housing offers are based on the availability of units, receipt date of your housing application, and geographic priority. Applicants outside of a 30-mile radius of the greater New York City area have the highest priority for housing. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate all requests for housing.

Applicants to programs which meet exclusively during the summer (e.g. InStep, Summer Principals Academy) should apply for Summer Conference Housing directly through the Office of Residential services.
