There are so many reasons to love living here . When my big city friends ask me why we moved here 12 years ago and never looked back, I can wax for hours on the never-ending benefits of life in Happy Valley . Many are obvious—the beauty, the small town environment, the opportunities afforded by Penn State . The biggest surprise is usually the food . Living in the heart of thriving agricultural area like Centre County and surrounding regions like Big Valley is a dream come true if you value freshness and seasonality, and appreciate knowing where your food comes from . In addition to farmers markets, CSAs and local retail markets, a large number of locally-owned restaurants source their food from surrounding farms . How amazing is it that if you don’t feel like cooking, you can choose from a list of restaurants who serve local meats and cheese, produce, baked goods, and even beer and wine? Another element of our local food scene that’s often underestimated is the variety . As Penn State attracts more international students and families, our food landscape continues to evolve with authentic ethnic restaurants and markets . We’re also fortunate that local restaurants owners and chefs love to innovate and offer new options created from traditional, seasonal staples . Browse the listings in this guide and go on your own food adventure . One thing I can assure you after completing the Second Annual issue of the Happy Valley Food Guide—the local food scene isn’t only getting bigger, it’s getting better . Get out and enjoy it .

Members come to the farm to collect their share of the week’s bounty . There is a weekly farm note that keeps folks informed about the happenings in fields, as well as provides delicious seasonal recipes . Once at the farm, members also have an opportunity to stock up on other locally produced foods, including dairy products, fresh bread and more that are available at The Harvest Shop . Over the Moon Farm is also at the farm at least two times a month to sell their organic beef, pork and chicken . Tait Farm’s Community Harvest offers individual and family shares . The individual share is designed to feed feed one person (or two light vegetable eaters), and the family share will feed feed two to four people each week . Tait Farm also offers a Workshare Program, which goes through the growing season and is a trade of labor for produce . You should be willing to commit four hours a week, on a consistent day . Workers can expect to do any number of tasks, ranging from planting and weeding to harvesting . SS

Last summer, a farmers’ market started . Here in central Pennsylvania where warm weather months are charted by the foods that grow in them – from the just-started-sum-mer-vacation strawberries, to the hottest-part-of-summer peaches, to the almost-autumn sweet corn—this seems like nothing special . But the Rec Park Farmers’ Market, launched in the “food desert” of downtown Lewistown, begs to differ . Patty Neiner from Women’s Agricultural Network at Penn State tells us why . When Patty joined the Pennsylvania Women’s Agri-cultural Network (PA-WAgN), she found that a farmer’s market promotion program grant had been written by her predecessor who was now on medical leave and unable to continue with the grant . Patty started to explore the idea herself – the grant, part of the 2007 Farm Bill, aimed to start a market in a ‘food desert’, a place defined as ‘an area where mainstream grocery stores are scarce or missing, many times in low-income areas (although not everyone living in a food desert is poor) .’ The new market would accept SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Acceptance Program) and FMNP (Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program) benefits, and would educate the com-munity through cooking classes and nutrition classes .

Patty started to talk to members in the community and found that access to farmers’ markets was limited both to consumers and local farmer vendors . Many of the people she talked to were also interested in learn-ing how to cook with food they could get at a market – they wanted to make nutritional food for their family, but their knowledge of preparing meals with seasonal foods was limited . With this research in hand, the team at PA-WAgN started meeting with Community Partnerships RC&D; Downtown Lewistown, Inc .; Department of Human Services; and the Tri-Valley Farmers’ Market officers to discuss ways to promote their market as well as set-up a satellite market . Tri-Valley Farmers’ Market was well established but needed signage to better promote their market, so after providing marketing materials, PA-WAgN turned their focus to creating a satellite mar-ket . Through focus groups, they learned that consum-ers were looking for a greater variety of vendors at the new market so the group decided to launch Rec Park Farmers’ Market during hours that wouldn’t compete with existing markets and that would target the working class with evening availability . Word of the new market spread and new vendors quickly signed on . Mostly all of the Tri-Valley vendors agreed to participate . All of the partners in this process worked at contacting other local agencies, advertisers, etc . to help promote the market . When Rec Park Farmers’ Market opened for the first time on June 5, 2012, 200 people came . “That’s the day I said to myself, this works,” Patty says . “It was great to see the level of cooperation between the com-munity groups and the farmers who wanted to see the market grow .” The market featured herbs and fresh flowers, free-range meats, milk and homemade cheese and ice cream alongside the seasonal fruits and vegetables . This was unique in Lewistown because of the larger shopping choice with a larger number of vendors . Instead of just shopping, it became an event – a place

where local farms and local shoppers connected . Funded by the grant, they were also able to offer a 10-week-long free CookShop which was taught by members of the community . The CookShop taught on topics like Perfect Market meats (with the free-range meats available at the market), 7 Ways to Eat Zucchini, Veggie Cookout, Fresh Salsa and Pesto and Soup from Scratch . Held in the fully-equipped kitchen of the community center that was adjacent to the market, the CookShop had more than 25 attendees each week who listened, learned, rolled up their sleeves and learned how to make salsas, baby food, black bean veggie burgers, tortillas, and more . Plans for the Summer 2013 market are already underway . It opens May 28, 2013 (hopefully with just-picked local strawberries), and the free CookShop classes start in July . This summer there will be live music as well, thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts . The Rec Park Farmers Market is held Tuesdays from 3 p .m .-7 p .m . Within the Happy Valley area are several that operate throughout the winter . The Downtown Farmers’ Market meets in the State College Municipal Building lobby Fridays 11:30 a .m .-5:00 p .m . The Bellefonte Farmers’ Market meets in the United Methodist Church on Spring Street Saturdays from 8 a .m -12 p .m . An indoor farmers’

market at the Old Gregg School in Spring Mills (106 School Street, Spring Mills, PA ) is held Saturdays from 10:00 a .m-1:00 p .m . The Boalsburg Farmers’ Market is held indoors during winter months at the Boalsburg Fire Hall on Tuesdays from 2-6 p .m . Way Fruit Farm at 2355 Halfmoon Valley Rd . Port Matilda, PA 16870 is open year-round, as is Tait Farm located seven miles east of State College along 322 . There is not as large a selection of produce in the winter, but some of the finds you can bag include red cabbage, green cabbage, carrots, celeriac, garlic, red onions, yellow onions, parsnips, red potatoes, yel-low potatoes, watermelon radishes, daikon radishes, red beets, shallots, sweet potatoes and turnips . If you are buying from vendors with a greenhouse, you may find winter greens, spinach, mizuna, vitamin green, yukina savoy, kale and bok choy . Also, according to Patty Neiner, winter is a great time for meats . “Local grass-fed meats taste so much better than [meat from] mass-produced animals who do not have access to fresh grass, fresh air and room for exercise .” As for veggies, “root crops are in abundance over the winter, and soups and crock pot meals are an easy way to keep fresh, local vegetables on the table this winter .”

I have always been a little too cynical to be a rav-ing fan . I am sorry if I smirked at you while you were camped out on the sidewalk waiting for the premiere of Twilight, rolled my eyes at your “If God wasn’t a Penn State fan, why is the sky blue and white” bumper stick-er, or snorted a little at your facebook play-by-play of the many merits of your new iPhone . I am sorry . I’ve changed . Now I’m one of you . I wish I could say that it took a long time to change me, but it didn’t . It only took one walk through the door—the exotic flowers and glossy vegetables on one side and the wall of trail mixes, dark chocolate goodies and “This Strawberry Walks into A Bar” cereal bars on the other—and I was hooked . It was Whole Foods without the pretense, Aldi without the sticky floors: a healthy, hipster low price haven of amazing food . That’s right, I am talking about Trader Joe’s . The bad thing was that the Trader Joe’s I discovered was in Columbus, Ohio . I packed a styrofoam cooler with Thai Vegetable Gyoza, garlic naan, dark chocolate roasted pistachio toffee and seaweed snacks and came back home . Before long, of course, the food ran out, but there was no Trader Joe’s to buy more . I am not proud to tell you that I drove a friend to the airport in Philadelphia so I could shop at the Trader Joe’s there .

When I found out that Trader Joe’s was coming to Happy Valley I was glad . And that may be an under-statement . So what’s to love? Let me tell you: Location. The new Trader Joe’s Plaza is just off North Atherton Street, a stone’s throw from Chick-Fil-A, Wegman’s and Target, so checking it out is easy . Even inside the store, location and placement is convenient . One of the shoppers I interviewed said her favorite part was that she could reach every-thing easily – the shelves are low enough and freezer section displays everything at eye level . As with all Trader Joe’s, the store takes on the flavor of its town: the checkout lanes are labeled with street names like “Beaver” and “Atherton” rather than numbers, and a mural features familiar sights like the Lion Shrine . Price. Across-the-board low prices are great news for all shoppers from the college student to the coupon-averse . In some cases, their organic produce is lower in price than non-organic produce in other supermarkets . Ashley Henderson, from Reedsville, visited the store for the first time in January . She says, “The amount of fair trade, natural and organic products at reasonable prices was exciting .” Chelsea Donaldson, another first-time shopper, was happy with the selec-tion of hard-to-find items like vegan and vegetarian foods . Food. From plain, good food like their “Joe’s O’s” answer to Cheerios, sensibly-priced organic offerings, to their gourmet treats like aged Havarti cheese and the crowd-favorite Crunchy Speculoos Cookie Butter, Trader Joe’s smallish store has something for everyone from the picky preschool crowd to serious foodies . Their website has a section dedicated to recipes using only their ingredients . While this isn’t a particularly new idea, the gourmand nature of the ingredients and end results set them in a niche all their own . Samples. The sample stand at the back of the store always offers a hot drink like coffee or cider, and a sample of the day like mac and cheese, pumpkin ravi-oli (I taste it in my dreams), or chicken tortilla soup . This is a great place to taste something and then be brave enough to make it yourself .

In this world there are people whose idea of “adventur-ous eating” is trying a new topping to their pizza, and there are people whose idea of “adventurous eating” is trying a thousand year egg and chicken foot soup . So what happens if those two disparate souls should meet, fall in love, and get married? To change the old proverb, a fish and a bird may fall in love, but what will they eat? Well, I will tell you, because I know . First of all, not all ethnic food (read: something your mama didn’t make) is going to be outside your comfort zone . Here are some tips to get the most out of your experience:

» Find an ingredient you already like and try it in a new dish . I think you might like it .

» If it is your first time trying a new ethnic restaurant, look for menu items with terms like “most popular”

or “recommended,” like Pad Thai at Cozy Thai Bistro . It is upscale comfort food and it is almost impossible not to like .

» If something says ‘spicy’ or ‘hot’, steer clear your first time unless you are feeling particularly bold! Every culture has its own spices as well as its own meter of hotness . Just because you like hot wings, you may not dig sriracha sauce . Once you know the dishes you like, you can spice it up . The same goes for raw fish, or thousand year eggs for that matter . Try it the second time you go . Find something you are pretty sure you are going to enjoy, and try it!

One of my favorite “just try this” restaurants is Cozy Thai Bistro at 232 S . Allen Street . A sampler platter and a steaming bowl of their almost impossible-to-dis-like Pad Thai has won over several friends . Herwig’s Austrian Bistro at 132 W . College Ave . is another—authentic food, great atmosphere, and family-owned . Other great area choices include Rey Azteca on 485 Benner Pike, Ni Hao Asian Fusion Restaurant at 255 Northland Ctr ., Kimchi Korean Restaurant at 1100 N . Atherton St ., Olde New York Restaurant (featuring old world cuisine) at 2298 E . College Ave ., and India Pavilion at 222 E . Calder Way . So whatever happened to the fish and bird who fell in love? The volcano sushi roll at Sakura is a current date-night favorite, if that’s any indication .

Even more good news is coming out of Bellefonte’s The Gamble Mill Restaurant and Microbrewery . Once known for upscale dining, “the Mill” started a steady transformation under the ownership of Dave Fonash and Paul Kendeffy who purchased the historic location in 2008 . The pair, who also own State College’s Zola New World Bistro, brought just the right of innova-tion to the restaurant while maintaining the history and tradition that have made the Gamble Mill a local landmark . With the addition of a Microbrewery in 2010—

led by Head Brewer and State College native Mike Smith—the restaurant gained popularity as an ‘any night’ dining option . Lured by exceptional craft brewed beer and, in part, a more casual menu offered in the restaurant’s Tavern area, customers no longer need a special occasion to enjoy the Mill’s locally-sourced, chef-prepared menu and one-of-a-kind atmosphere . To accommodate its growing customer base and dedicate more space to feature its beer, the Gamble Mill recently com-pleted a renovation to a large portion of its second-floor din-ing room . The space now includes a large bar, a seating area, and space for live music—a unique ad-dition to Bellefonte . Like the Tavern, the upstairs bar will offer both the Tavern menu and the dining room menu . The Inn At Mount Nittany Summit, formerly known as Mount Nittany Inn is an historical part of State College, PA . Around since the 1920s and just eight miles from downtown State College, it is known for its country style comfort food and rustic antique feeling, not to mention the amazing view of the valley . The Inn has gone through several exciting changes throughout the years . The Inn had been closed due to fires, and reopened in 2008 . At that time, the owners decided to take the Inn in a new direction . They closed the rooms that they had in there and decided to open a banquet hall in order to accommodate parties, wed-dings and other local events . More recently, the new management team, Rebecca Larsen and Cody Wolfe redesigned the menu to excite the taste buds, while still keeping the rustic feel of the Inn . Her goal was to put the Inn back on the map . She wanted to keep it simple, give it a fresh look, yet not lose the country feel that people have been enjoying since the beginning . In addition, the Inn recently added a new sous chef, Aaron Swartz . He joined chef Jeremiah Mc-Clanahan, who has been with the restaurant since he was fourteen (He had started as a dishwasher, left to

join the military and go to culinary school and then returned as a chef in 2008) . According to Rebecca, the dynamic duo have the same style of cooking and bring their love of the outdoors into the refined, rustic dishes that they make . Of course, one has to ask, what goes into the food? Rebecca revealed that they tend to source ingredients locally . Some of their favorite places to visit for food in-clude Tait Farms, Stone Meadow Farms, Hogs Galore as well as several local bakeries . For beer and wine, their go to places include Elk Creek Cafe and several of the local wineries . Rebecca adds that they are always forming new relationships with people in the area by visiting farmer’s markets and other local food places . So what are some of the top dishes that The Inn serves? Rebecca was more than happy to share some of her favorites: » The crab cakes and anything with crab or seafood » The steaks » The new burger menu, which contains steak burgers » The smoked salmon » The weekend brunch menu » Venison medallions » French pork chops » Homemade salad dressings

As an Italian woman from New York, I live my life with the three Fs: Fashion, Fun and Food . As anyone from the Big Apple can tell you, its pizza is legendary and a tough act to follow when it comes to replicating it . (I am sure Chicago people would agree as well, but I have never been there or tried their pizza, so I can’t comment on that) . This is why I was a bit apprehensive when I was told how fabulous the fare at Pizza Mia in Bellefonte was . All I can say after trying it is: paint me red and

call me cynical! This has been some of the

best pizza I have tasted

since I left

New York five years ago, and something I can’t wait to try again soon . I ordered a 10-inch pizza--half plain and half with banana peppers and bacon, an Italian sub, a stuffed portabella mushroom and a berry dessert pizza . Let’s start with the pizza . The crust was the right combination of soft, fresh Italian bread (another New York staple that I miss) and just enough crispiness and spice to give it an extra kick . The whole milk cheese used is fresh and melted, making it the perfect mar-riage for any toppings added to the pizza (all of which are fresh!) It certainly gives the saying “awesome wrapped in bacon” a whole new meaning! The portabella mushroom was covered with moz-zarella cheese, garlic and tomatoes . It reminded me of a pizza, but atop a mushroom instead of a crust . The cheese is perfectly melted and the spice ratio is spot on . I especially loved the tomatoes added for an extra bit of flavor . My only complaint is that I wanted more once I’d finished it! Onto the Italian sub . Again, as a New York girl, I am very picky about my sandwiches . Anyone from

New York knows that it is the best place to get sandwiches . Well, now I can say that there is some competition for my favorite NYC deli . The meats taste as if they were from a meat market; while the bread tastes as if it came straight from the oven: soft, fluffy and nothing short of fabulous . Add some lettuce, tomato and oils and you have a sandwich fit for a king! I finished my meal with a berry pizza . It is on a sugary crust with fresh berries, comes with a berry sauce on top and vanilla icing on the side . One bite and I was in heaven . There is nothing in this world like a fresh berry pastry . . .tonight

I plan on finishing off my leftovers and adding some ice cream on top for an even better experi-

ence . Pizza Mia is an Italian’s dream come true, and

nothing short of a taste of home for an Italian from New York . Between the friendly atmosphere, the deli-cious food and comfortable setting, there is no place in the area I would rather go to relive my childhood days of going out for pizza with my family .

The Greek—while it’s been around for a little more than a year, this authentic Greek restaurant is still on the best kept secret list, especially if you only visit a few times a year . After many years of serving the best American breakfast in Happy Valley, the original Waffle Shop’s founder, John Dimakopoulos, now brings his traditional Greek cuisine to you . You’ll find all your traditional favorites on the menu, plus a few items so authentic they’ll be new to you . James Eisenstein, a former Penn State professor of Poli Sci and Crime, Law & Justice, says, “More and more restaurants are using local ingredients . Almost everything we eat is produced locally, something that was impossible as recently as 10 years ago . But freshness is critical to nutrition and taste, and most local growers also minimize the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers .
