Welcome to the33rd Annual Herndon FestivalMay 30-June 2, 2013

In 1980 the first Herndon Festival was held as a way of bringing the community together to welcome summer in a spirit of celebration. It has since taken its place in Herndon history as a time-honored and much anticipated event. The Herndon Parks and Recreation Department is excited to invite you to be a part of the 33rd Annual Herndon Festival and enjoy what has become the largest free festival in Northern Virginia.

Mission StatementThe Herndon Festival provides an opportunity for the Town of Herndon to promote and enhance our community, its quality of life, economic growth, diversity, and spirit, through a celebration with our citizens, businesses, and community organizations, through cultural, entertaining, social, sporting, and business activities.

The Herndon Festival is presented by a volunteer committee which assists Parks & Recreation Department staff in the development and implementation of the entire event. Planning and preparation takes place over a 10 month period each year. Over 1,000 volunteer hours go into the Festival annually.

The Herndon Festival is guided by an Executive Committee which is made up of civic leaders. The Executive Committee provides support to the planning staff. The 2013 Executive Committee members are: Bill Jonas, Arno Randall, Ann Rust, Jason Trust and Les Zidel.

The Herndon Festival is a four-day outdoor festival featuring big name entertainment on three stages, a carnival, two fireworks displays, kids alley with children’s hands-on art area, arts & crafts show, business expo, 10K/5K races and fitness expo, complimentary shuttle bus service, and a wide variety of high-qual-ity food vendors. The event attracts an average of 80,000 people each year.

Historic downtown Herndon offers an ideal setting for the Herndon Festival. The streets are lined with arts & crafts vendors, business exhibits, and food vendors. Stages are situated on the two town greens offering a place to sit and enjoy music. A third stage is placed in a food and beer court area. On Satur-day and Sunday children’s activities give families a place to enjoy free hands-on art activities, interactive street performers, family entertainment, model railway, food and more.

What’s Unique About the Herndon Festival?H It’s Free! The Herndon Festival is one of the few major festivals in the Washington metropolitan area that does not charge for admission or parking, making it an affordable outing for just about everyone. We offer three stages of entertainment, creative hands-on art activities for children, and two spectacular fireworks displays…all free! We even offer a complimentary shuttle bus service to help people get to and from the Festival area.

An Event That Helps OthersAlthough Herndon is very much a part of the high tech Northern Virginia area, it retains a unique small-town character with historic buildings, town greens, brick sidewalks, and quaint shops. And the Festival reflects this small-town feel. Many of Herndon’s community and cultural organizations participate in the Festival, using the event as an effective annual fund raiser to support local worthwhile causes. The Council for the Arts of Herndon, AmericanLegion,BoyScoutsandGirlScouts,HerndonRotary, andtheHerndon Optimist Club are just a few of the groups that participate annually.
