Organizers of the 2013Home and Garden Expo,presented by TheMessenger, are preparing fora record-setting sold outshow next Friday.

The event will be held atthe Career EducationBuilding on the IowaCentral Community Collegecampus.

Events CoordinatorLeanne Darr said this year’s

Home and Garden Expo hasmore vendors than any pre-vious year.

“We have 67 vendors thisyear, which is actually arecord,” she said. “The showis also sold out.”

Darr said those numbersare good news for thoseinvolved.

“It shows that people arewilling to come out and dowork,” she said. “They cancome out and get ideas forhome improvement, garden-

ing and building. There’ssomething for everyone.”

Included among the 67vendors are a number whoare taking part in the Homeand Garden Expo for thefirst time.

“Kemna Auto will behaving a few of their vehi-cles on display,” Darr said.“We’ll also have FriendshipHaven, who will be there forthe senior living part of theshow.”

Other new vendors

include Bachman Painting,Country Landscaping,Fitzgerald Welding, andSimply Clean andRestoration.

Golf carts will also beprovided to transport peoplefrom the parking lot to thedoors. Darr said this is thefirst time organizers haveprovided transportation.

Gardening expert JerryKluver will not only offertips and techniques gainedfrom 40 years of gardeningduring his presentation atthe 2013 Home andGarden Expo, he will alsobring along one of histools.

“I’ll be bringing Jerry’sfavorite rake,” he said.

While he won’t be lend-ing it to anyone, he will letthem know why he favorsit for working on his lawn.

He’ll also be giving tipson how to best take advan-tage of the five-step lawn

care he recommends fromHy-Vee.

His first bit of advicethough, applies to all lawnsand lawn products.

“Don’t start too early,”he said.

The first two steps aretreatments for weeds andgrubs. Eliminating pestssuch as crabgrass areimportant for the lawn, hesaid.

Once past that, in June,he said it will be time forfeeding the lawn. In July,post-emergent treatmentfor weeds and finally, inOctober, a treatment to getthe turf ready for bedding

Kitterman has been aserious “couponer” forabout three years, startingwhen she decided to be astay-at-home mom with herson.

“I always used coupons,”she said. “But that is when Ireally got into it. When Ibecame a stay-at-home momI started getting to knowstore policies and using morecoupons.”

Kitterman will be present-ing on how to use couponsfrom the newspaper, whereto find additional coupons,how to get online coupons,how to store and organizethem and where to use them.

‘We’ll touch on how tofind more coupons, how tostock up and where to findthe best deals,” said

Kitterman. “Every little bityou save can keep addingup.”

Kitterman said the presen-tations will be a shortenedversion of her two-hourclasses.

“I’ll give a goodoverview,” she said. “Wewon’t go into lots ofspecifics on stores but it isstill a great way to get start-ed.”

Kitterman began coupon-ing as an alternative to get-ting a part-time job to gener-ate extra income. She hasbeen able to save up to asmuch as $300 to $400 amonth.

“This was a great way tobring the savings home,” shesaid. “You can save 50 to 60percent on household goods

and groceries. Kitterman said the amount

of money saved in one yearcan be in the thousands.

“I kept track over a year,you really can save over$4,000 in one year.

Kitterman will be makingher third appearance at theshow this year.

“I’m excited to be comingback,” she said. “We had agreat group last year, over100 people came out lasttime.”

“I want to share the tipsand tricks,” she said.“Especially in this econo-my, people want to knowthem and they want to knowjust how much they reallycan save.”

Visitors will see hownew can come from oldwhen they stop in for DanOswald’s talk Saturdaymorning, as well as learn-ing how to protect theirown homes from a silentkiller.

Oswald is head of theDeconstruction andEnergy EfficientRenovation program atIowa Central CommunityCollege. He will speak at11 a.m. Saturday aboutthat program and on thedangers of radon gas inbasements.

Deconstruction is a wayto tear down old buildingswithout losing the materi-als involved. Instead ofsimply demolishing astructure, his students“harvest” old buildings,saving every piece possi-ble — lumber, nails, bolts,he said.

It takes longer than tra-ditional demolition — itcould take a team of 20 to25 people four days todeconstruct a building thatmight take one workerwith heavy machinery asingle day to demolish.

The wood can then besanded and shaped to cre-ate furniture pieces.

“It’s not as much workas you might think,” hesaid. “For one thing, we

are less particular withwhat wood we can use.”

Some of those pieceswill be on display, to showwhat the program can do.

Tables, wine racks andother furniture will be fea-tured, much of it builtfrom pieces of an old barnthat once stood outside ofManson.

“These are old carriagebolts from the building inManson,” Oswald said,pointing out the prongs ona coat rack. “Can you seethe square head?”

The student who made itwanted a layered look, sohe glued together severaldifferent colored pieces ofwood from the barn.

Oswald will also bring adresser made out of stairtreads, and a bow rack thatincludes bark he picked upby Lizard Creek.

All the pieces will be forsale, with the proceedsgoing to support the pro-gram.

Oswald will addressradon in basementsbecause, he said, it’s avery big issue.

“Iowa has one of highestlevels of radon in base-ments in the nation,” hesaid. “Radon is the secondleading cause of lung can-cer, other than smoking.It’s a killer.

“It keeps things out ofthe landfill,” he said. “Ourlandfills are filling up, sothat’s an important issue.

“A lot of this lumber wesalvage is old-growthlumber that you can’teven buy anymore.There’s a lot of good lum-ber there that would justget buried.”

Plus, people really likethe rustic, distressed lookof the furniture, he said.

Finally, the program isa great job creator.

Oswald’s programincludes students from theRabiner Treatment Centeror the North CentralCorrectional Facility inRockwell City. Thishands-on training can becritical in helping them

succeed after they leavethe facility, Oswald said.

“Some of our studentshave never held a job,unless it was sellingdrugs. We give them thatexperience of coming into work on time everyday,” he said.

Oswald helped to createthe deconstruction pro-gram in 2010. His stu-dents have repurposedbuildings from throughoutthe area, including FortDodge, Manson,Rockwell City and GrandJunction.

The program lasts eightweeks. After completingthis class, the studentsreceive their certificationin lead renovation andasbestos removal, as wellas in deconstruction. Theyalso receive their statesafety certification thatcomplies with theOccupational Safety andHealth Administration.

Along those lines, he’llgive some time-tested do’sand don’ts for trimmingshrubs and trees in thespring.

“You don’t want to becutting off blooms youcould be enjoying,” hesaid.

Kluver will also answera question many home-owners have asked them-selves after the onslaughtof dry weather: ‘How do Iget my yard back?”

One of his own favoriteplants, the hydrangea, willget some time devoted toit too.

“I’ll teach them how toturn them pink or bluewithout reverting to sil-ver,” Kluver said.

He also suggested thatgardeners get their soiltested. He said Hy-Vee’sGarden Centers, includingthe one in Fort Dodge,have mail-in testing kitsavailable.

“Without knowing thechemistry of your soil,you’re shooting in thedark,” Kluver said.

He will also offer some-thing for the first-timerwho may not ever gottentheir hands dirty in thesoil.

“I’ll offer some tips tothe person who asks ‘Howdo I start a garden?’,” hesaid.

Kluver learned the hor-ticulture business on afarm near Charter Oak. Heworked at Earl MayNurseries for 38 yearsbefore coming to Hy-Vee.
