James Gaudino, President Central Washington University
There is much to celebrate at this, the platinum
anniversary College of Business (CB) Honors Banquet.
While this is the 20th annual event, it is the first for Dr.
Kathryn Martell, the CB dean. She joined us last July 1
and is continuing to build upon the successes of her
predecessor, Dr. Roy Savoian, who is now the
executive director of the Institute for Innovation and
Entrepreneurship (I4IE). Along with the Northwest
Center for Organizational Research, Northwest Center
for Sport Business, and Supply Chain Management
Institute, I4IE is among the pillars that set our
nationally accredited CB apart from similar colleges across the state and nation.
Another CB pillar is the exceptional quality and dedication of its faculty
and staff. Earlier this year, two of them appeared before the university’s Board
of Trustees to receive well-deserved recognition. Sharon Damm, senior
secretary in accounting, was honored as a Distinguished Civil Servant, while Dr.
Jim Nimnicht, professor of Human Resource Management, was awarded the
rank of Professor Emeritus.
In addition, the Dr. James Nimnicht Endowed Scholarship in Human
Resource Management was recently inaugurated. It is one of two scholarship
funds founded this year. The other is the Professor Gary W. Heesacker
Endowed Scholarship in Accounting. The CB also reached a milestone with the
establishment of its first endowed professorship, as the Patrick R.
O’Shaughnessy Endowment surpassed both its $1 million goal in cash balance
and $1.1 million goal in cash and pledges in support of the Patrick R.
O’Shaughnessy Executive Professor of Accounting.
It is through our innovative programs, the top-quality education offered,
and the giving spirit of our alumni and friends of the CB that it is strong today
and will become even stronger in the years ahead. I extended my sincere
congratulations for all of these latest achievements and the many others that we
will celebrate here tonight.
Marilyn Levine, Provost/VP for
Academic Affairs & Student Life Central Washington University
It is my honor to welcome you to the 2013 CWU
College of Business Honors Banquet. The College of
Business has had a very successful year, winning
awards for faculty research, student accomplishments,
and continued excellence in teaching and service. The
faculty, students, alumni, and the wonderful advisory

Mission CWU's College of Business faculty and staff create value and opportunity
for our students by focusing on quality in undergraduate education at the
Ellensburg campus and university centers in the Puget Sound and central
regions of Washington state. We accomplish this through emphasis on
excellence in teaching, strengthened by faculty research and supported by
professional service.
Vision The College of Business will be recognized as a premier learning
community creating an environment in which students, faculty and staff
reach their full potential.
Statement of Conduct
The College of Business is a learning community committed to a set of
core values based on integrity, respect and responsibility that guide our
interactions.
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Only the best business schools earn AACSB International accreditation,
and Central Washington University is home to one of them. When the CB
received its accreditation from AACSB, it joined the ranks of the best
business schools in the world— less than five percent of the business
schools globally.
The AACSB is the longest-serving, largest global-accrediting organization
for business schools and serves as an informational resource for students
who need to consider the best business schools for their academic goals.
Employers recognize the value of a degree from an AACSB-accredited
school. When they see a resume from a CWU College of Business
graduate, they will know it means that the applicant has studied under
professors who conduct research regularly, and possess knowledge of
current business ideas and methods. Bottom-line: graduates are “job-
ready”.

Distinguished Faculty
A major event annually at CWU is the selection of the Distinguished University
Professor for Teaching, for Research/Artistic Accomplishment, and for Public
Service. These Distinguished Faculty Awards are the highest awards attainable at
the university and represent the highest level of performance. The awards are
overseen by the CWU Faculty Senate through a nomination process and funding
for awards (for each category) is generously provided by the Office of the
President. Twelve CB faculty have been honored as Distinguished University
Professor. Robert Carbaugh is the only faculty member from the college to earn the
awards twice—once for teaching and once for research.
Thank you for your contributions and years of service and dedication to
the College of Business and Central Washington University.
Best wishes in your retirement!

board all are helping to continue and expand upon this growing reputation of
quality. We are particularly delighted this year to welcome Dr. Kathryn Martell
as new Dean of the College of Business. Dean Martell brings a wealth of
experience in the breadth of her disciplinary knowledge, practical experience,
and an international reputation in the area of business college assessment.
To the students - I know that graduates of the program will be leaving
with key knowledge and skills that they will be contributing to the economic
vitality in our communities. I wish you every success in your careers as you go
forward.
Kathryn Martell, Dean College of Business
Welcome to the 20th annual College of Business
Honors Banquet! This special evening brings alumni,
family, and friends together to celebrate the
achievements and accomplishments of students and
faculty. We also welcome members of the CWU
administration as well as the Advisory Board and
Councils affiliated with the College of Business. We are pleased that tonight's speaker is retiring
faculty member and former Associate Dean, John
Lasik. We look forward to his presentation, "The
Next Step – Change Creates Opportunity.” Drawing
from his 36 years as an educator, Professor Lasik will
provide his perspective on what is needed for success
in the transition from student to successful business professional. Professor
Lasik is a dedicated teacher and is respected and well-liked by students, faculty
and staff, and we appreciate his willingness to provide “a final lecture” to our
high-achieving students.
Tonight we honor our students and faculty for their excellence. The
College of Business faculty and staff are dedicated to creating value and
opportunity for our students by providing a high quality education at the
Ellensburg campus and university centers in Lynnwood, Des Moines and the
central region of Washington State. While all faculty members contribute in a
variety of distinctive and significant ways, we recognize a few tonight for their
excellence in teaching, advising, research and professional service,
respectively. In addition, some students are recognized for their high level of
academic achievement and others for the quality of their contribution during an
internship.
“Congratulations” to the many outstanding students and faculty in the
College of Business for a job well done!

John Lasik has been a faculty member and administrator in the College of

1980. Following graduation from high school in New Kensington, PA (just
