We’ve seen remarkable changes both domestically and globally following the first impact of BSE, and more recently the all-time high sale prices. Breeders have been resilient and dedicated to improving their breeds, allowing fads to come and go and have continued to provide value to their customers, offering reliable genetics and quality service.

calving ease ratingsBulls denoted with a Calving Ease Gold Standard symbol are recommended for use on heifers.

They all rank at the top of the breed for low birth weight and/or calving ease. Use these bulls with confidence that they will provide calving ease.

These bulls have been used successfully on heifers and all rank well above breed average for low birth

weight and/or good calving ease or have strong progeny proof information showcasing excellent calving ease through the commercial sector that haven’t been reflected in the EPD’s. They are excellent choices to be used on both heifers and cows but use on heifers with some caution.

Availability

Term DefinitionsHomozygous Polled - These bulls have been tested to be homozygous polled by either pedigree or DNA. Bulls confirmed homozygous polled by proven pedigree have a 99.9% probablility of being homo polled. Bulls confirmed homo polled via DNA testing provide slightly less accurate results. Semex takes no respnsibility in the accuracy of the DNA testing results.

Heterozygous Polled - These bulls are polled but carry one polled gene and one horned gene, therefore they may sire horned calves when mated to horned cows or other hetero polled cows.

Horned - These bulls carry the horned gene and will only produce horned calves when mated to other horned females.

Homozygous Black - These bulls have a 99.9% probability of producing all black calves when mated to non-diluted red and black cattle. These bulls have been verified through DNA testing.

Heterozygous Black - These sires are black but carry one red gene therefore will produce some red calves when mated to red females.

Dilution Genes - Cattle carrying dilution or spotter genes will be grey, red or yellow.

Purebred - Purebred is defined as having the blood percentage of the breed at 99.9 % or less and have some influence of blood from another breed.

Fullblood - Fullblood cattle are 100% pure and have no influence from any other breed..

Fleckvieh - Fleckvieh is the German or Austrian term for Simmental. This term is used to describe fullblood cattle that are represented in the Semex program with a high percentage of the pedigree derived from original German or Austrian pedigrees.

Full Fleckvieh - Full Fleckvieh cattle are described as having 31/32 of the animals pedigree sourced from Austria or Germany.

Genomic Testing Numerous bulls throughout the catalogue have had their EPD’s enhanced through the use of genomic testing. Some Semex sires have also been tested through Igenity and/or Pfizer, to view results please visit our website at: www.semex.com/beef.

Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM) which is also known as Curly Calf Syndrome has been diagnosed in some lines of Angus cattle. The genetic defect is characterized by a calf being born dead with what appears as a bent or twisted spine. The calves also appear small with little muscle development and legs tend to be rigid or hyperextended, which can sometimes lead to calving difficulties.

Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH) which is also known as “Water Head”, is a genetic defect that has been diagnosed in some lines of Angus. NH calves are born near to term and have birth weights around 25-35 lbs. The cranium is remarkably enlarged with the bones of the skull malformed and the cranial cavity is filled with fluid and no evidence of brain tissue.

Contractual Arachnodactyly (CA) also known as “Fawn Calf”, has been recently diagnosed within certain lines of Angus cattle. CA calves are normally born alive and can usually walk, suckle and survive however face limited mobility due to contractures that reduce the range of angular movement in the upper limb joints at birth. Due to the reduced mobility the calves often appear in an abnormal crouched posture similar to a deer farm, with feet placed more to the rear than normal, hocks pull up and back and the spine slightly arched. CA infected calves can show significant recovery and usually appear relatively normal by 4 to 6 months of age.

Alpha-Mannosidosis (MA) is a lethal nervous system disorder that has been diagnosed in certain lines of Red Angus cattle. Cattle affected by MA usually fail to thrive and develop a progressive in coordination as well as an aggressive disposition. Typically affected animals will die before reaching sexual maturity.

Osteopetrosis (OS) also referred to as “Marble Bone Disease” has been diagnosed in certain lines of Red Angus cattle. OS calves are typically born dead and 10-30 days premature. They usually possess a short lower jaw with impacted molars and long, fragile bones that can be broken with ease.

Hypotrichosis (HY) which is also referred to as “Hairlessness”, is a genetic recessive disorder diagnosed in certain lines of Hereford cattle. HY affected animals are often born with very short, fine and kinky hair that falls out leaving bare spots and areas that are susceptible to rubbing.

Protoporphyia or more commonly referred to as proto has been diagnosed in Limousin cattle. Animals that are proto positive are extremely sensitive to sunlight and will develop scabs and open sores when exposed to sunlight.

Tibial Hemimelia (TH) has been diagnosed in several breeds including Shorthorn, Maine-Anjou as well as Club Calf sires. TH affected calves are typically born with excessively large abdominal hernias and are unable to stand due to twisted rear legs and fussed joints.

Pulmonary Hypoplasia with Anasarca (PHA) has been diagnosed in several breeds including Shorthorns, Maine-Anjous as well as Club Calf sires. PHA calves are usually born dead with an extremely large amount of fluid both in the body cavity and between the body and skin. The results is abnormally large calves that require birthing assistance and can cause calving complications.

epD Definitions

EPD (Expected Progeny Difference) is an estimate of how a sire’s progeny will perform in comparison to other sires in the breed.

ACC (Accuracy) is a measure of certainty regarding the EPD evaluation for a performance trait. Large values indicate a greater accuracy while lower accuracies of less than 0.20 are typical for sires who’s EPD’s are based on pedigree and few progeny.

CED or CE (Calving Ease Direct) is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit calving ease in comparison to other sires, in other words progeny being born unassisted.

BW (Birth Weight) is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny in comparison to other sires, Used in conjunction with actual birth weight this can be used to determine calving ease.

WW (Weaning Weight) is used as a predictor to show the sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to hi progeny, in comparison to other sires.

YW (Yearling Weight) is used as a predictor to show the sire’s ability to transmit growth to hi progeny, in comparison to other sires.

MILK is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and maternal strength, as expressed by his daughters.

M&G, MWWT or TM (Total Maternal) reflects a sire’s ability to transmit growth genetics combined with milking abilities to his daughters.

CEM or MCE (Maternal Calving Ease) is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit calving ease to his daughters.

SC (Scrotal Circumference) is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit scrotal size in comparison to other sires.

STAY is a predictor of the sire’s ability to produce females that produce and have longevity.

CW (Carcass Weight) is expressed in lbs and is a predictor of the difference in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to other sires.

MARB or IMF (Marbling) is a predictor of the sires ability to transmit intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle of his progeny compared to other sires.

REA (Rib Eye Area) is a predictor of the difference in square inches of ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to the progeny of other sires.

FAT (Fat Thickness) is a predictor of the difference in the external fat thickness at the 12th rib in comparison to the progeny of other sires.
